publisher's note Quick question... How is it already October??? The temperatures have started to come down just a bit. I’ve noticed the leaves falling off of my fig trees already and my daughter asks daily for a pumpkin spice frappuccino. Yes, fall is officially here! As we gear up for the holiday season that will soon be upon us, I wanted to feature the GVTC Foundation in this issue. The employees of GVTC, along with their friends and family, do so much to help out those in need.Their annual Thanksgiving Giveback provides local families in need with full Thanksgiving meals. To learn more, be sure to check out how you too can help make sure as many hill country families

as possible don’t go hungry this Thanksgiving on page 16. As the weather cools, we are reminded of the importance of a warm and secure home. Your homes’ roof plays a key role in this, so if you are in need of a new roof, a re-reroof or repairs be sure to check out the good folks at Kendall County Roofing. Read all about them on page 28. The Best Savings Account Ever Created

S

by Casey Keller - Investment Advisor at Covenant

Saving for your future is obviously important, but sometimes overlooked or underappreciated is how and where to put your savings to maximize after-tax earnings potential. Especially with interest rates near historic lows, optimizing every dollar is more important than ever. There are many choices, such as 401(k)s, bank accounts, Roth IRAs, annuities, etc. They all have their pros and cons, but we often find that the best savings vehicle from a tax standpoint is misunderstood and therefore not considered or utilized in a way to maximize its potential. The best savings vehicle ever created was signed into law in late 2003, the Health Savings Account (HSA). The main benefit to the HSA is that it’s the only TRIPLE tax advantaged account type available! It is triple tax advantaged because: 1) All contributions are pre-tax (or tax deductible). Contributions from employers are pre-tax and personal contributions are tax deductible. And, unlike IRAs there is no cap on income level for this benefit. 2) Savings can be invested, and earnings are tax free. 3) Future withdrawals are tax free (if used for eligible medical expenses, even previously incurred medical expenses). Even the popular Roth IRA has only 2 out of these 3 benefits! Some confuse this account type with a Flex Spending account, which requires you to spend all money by the end of the year. Others don’t realize the potential benefits of this savings strategy or just spend it down as health care costs arise throughout the year. To unleash the power of an HSA account, the strategy is to save as much as possible (up to legal limits*) and don’t spend it now. Instead, pay for medical expenses with other means (if possible) and allow the balance to grow. It is very important to keep track of all your medical expenses that you are paying out of pocket (medications, doctor visits, dental visits, vision care, etc.). Some HSA providers have online features that allow you to upload receipts and tally all your expenses. Then, if you have an emergency reserve of savings (a.k.a. “rainy day” fund) outside the HSA,

8

B oerne B usiness M onthly | October 2019

start investing the balance. Most HSA providers allow you to invest the balance. If yours does not, the balance can be easily transferred to another HSA provider that allows investments. Most HSA providers offer a handful of mutual funds to choose from, but some allow brokerage accounts which allow an almost unlimited choice of investment options. Here’s the kicker…. If you do this strategy for a long time, you could have thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars saved, which could possibly fund all your future retirement health care expenses, taxfree. And, remember those medical expenses you’ve been tallying over the years? Let’s say they add up to $20,000. You can always reimburse yourself at any time and then use those dollars for whatever you want, even years after medical expenses were incurred. Take the family on vacation, help pay for college, etc., tax free. If you ever end up with the problem of too much money saved in this account, after age 65 you can withdraw for non-health related expenses, and just pay tax on the withdrawal like an IRA. Unfortunately, not everyone qualifies for an HSA account. According to the IRS, to be

an eligible individual and qualify for an HSA, you must meet the following requirements: • You are covered under a high deductible health insurance plan (HDHP). Check your plan to ensure that it is HSA eligible. • You have no other health coverage except what is permitted under other health coverage, • You aren’t enrolled in Medicare. • You can’t be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return. If you have never used a high deductible health insurance plan, the pros and cons must certainly be considered, but the benefits of having an HSA should certainly be a part of that decision. The decision should not be made in a vacuum, but rather as part of a comprehensive financial plan. A financial planner can help with this. BBM *current maximum contribution limits for 2019 - up to $3,500 for individuals or $7,000 for family ($4,500 and $8,000 if over age 55) Casey Keller is an investment advisor at Covenant. A Spirit of (Thanks)Giving

Another summer has come and gone. And what are we most thankful for? Saying goodbye to 100-degree weather and summer diets and hello to all things fall! It’s no wonder fall is a lot of people’s favorite season when we have so many things to look forward to. Cue in perfect weather for cozy sweaters, warm drinks, bonding with loved ones over Aunt Judy’s famous green bean casserole and mom’s killer stuffing! While some of us are excited to put salads and swimsuits behind us to make room for pie, some families in our Texas Hill Country community are impacted by the ever-rising cost of food this Thanksgiving season. Wouldn't it be nice if instead of desperately waiting for pumpkin spice lattes, we follow a more meaningful trend this fall like giving back? Count us in!

Turkey with a Side of Helping

A turkey dinner tastes a lot better after helping people. The GVTC Foundation, GVTC’s employee-driven philanthropic arm, believes no family should worry about where their next meal is coming from, especially not on Thanksgiving. That’s why they host their annual Thanksgiving Giveback project where they provide Thanksgiving meals, including a full frozen turkey and all the traditional trimmings, by teaming up with local food pantries to purchase meals, and collect food donations which are packaged and personally delivered by their employees to struggling homes throughout Boerne, Canyon Lake, Bulverde, Spring Branch, Blanco, and Gonzales.

Altruism never tasted so good!

Seeing the community team up to help eliminate hunger

every holiday by serving nearly 900 meals in the past 6 years, getting to meet with families personally to hear their stories, and show them they care about them is what GVTC is most grateful for each year. They aren’t stopping there, though! In honor of this beautiful tradition, they want to help even more people than in any previous year. They can’t do it alone, so they truly depend on your support to ensure as many families as possible don’t go hungry this Thanksgiving season. The GVTC Foundation is collecting donations through November 14 and is partnering with food pantries and youth volunteers to accomplish their goal. Community youth groups looking to earn community service hours are welcome to participate in organizing a food drive, to benefit this event. If you are in an organization looking to partner with them, please email info@gvtcfoundation.com. Food items needed include: Bag of potatoes or box of instant flakes, Jellied Cranberry Sauce, Green Beans (canned), Corn (canned), Gravy (canned or packet), and Stuffing (instant). Donate $25.00* to purchase a full meal or donate food from the list now through November 10th. Food & monetary donations can be made at any GVTC Store or by calling The GVTC Foundation at (830)885-8340.

Beyond Thanksgiving

The GVTC Foundation goes beyond the holiday season to enhance the quality of lives in our service area year ‘round. While their Thanksgiving Giveback Project requires all hands-on deck in the fall, there are multiple projects and opportunities to partner with The GVTC Foundation to help the community.

Most notable is their main fundraiser, the GVTC Charitable Golf Tournament, held every spring. This past May, businesses partners, community leaders, and dozens of GVTC employee volunteers came together to raise a record-breaking $220,000, of which 100% of the proceeds help fund grants, sponsorships, and scholarships The GVTC Foundation awards to our community. In addition, The GVTC Foundation opens four scholarship applications in January to graduating seniors totaling up to $50,000. The $20,000 Ritchie Sorrells Scholarship for Leaders recognizes students who exhibit outstanding leadership qualities and have used innovation or technology to make a positive change in our community. The Ola Armstrong Scholarship for $20,000 goes to a college-bound graduate exemplifying extraordinary service, volunteer work and involvement in their local community. And two $5,000 Vocational/Technical Scholarships recognize high school graduates who have demonstrated a commitment to continuing their education in pursuit of a degree or certification in a vocational or technical field. Boerne Sunrise Rotary Participates in Project Crayola in Ciudad Acuna, Mexico

O

On September 5-6, members of the Boerne Sunrise Rotary, along with fellow Rotary Club members from Fredericksburg, Hondo and Del Rio traveled to Ciudad Acuna across the border in Del Rio to engage in Project Crayola with the Club Rotario de Ciudad Acuna. Project Crayola has been ongoing for over 22 years as a joint project between Boerne Sunrise Rotary and Club Rotario de Ciudad Acuna. All participating clubs provided funds to pay for school supplies meeting the needs of elementary age students in four elementary schools in the Ciudad Acuna area. Additional bulk school supplies procured by these funds were delivered to other schools in the area taking care of the needs of hundreds of elementary students. Project Crayola is one of several international projects in which Boerne Sunrise Rotary participates including a 25 year program of support of the Aguascalientes Eye Bank in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Love Kolaches

H

Boerne’s Best-Kept Secret Have you heard of Boerne’s best-kept secret? Penguin Suits is ready to spill the tea and dish out our favorite breakfast spot in all of the Texas Hill Country. Just off River Road sits Little Gretel, a culturally rich Czech eatery that features by far the best Kolaches from Denise’s Love Kolaches! In search of delectable pastries for an upcoming birthday, our team stumbled upon Little Gretel and Love Kolaches and hello, here we have our go-to morning pit-stop. Let us not forget to mention that not only are these satiating kolaches delicious, they are beautifully made to be presented at any event. Each morning Denise Mazal at Little Gretel makes by hand, fresh, buttery and authentic Czech kolaches that include both the traditional fruit and Texas variation of sausage kolaches to order. You can find five fabulous flavors when you visit Little Gretel; peach and cheese, plum, poppy seed, sausage, and jalapeno sausage. The butter and savory bread mixed with the sweet indulgence of the fruit is truly a tantalizing combination on the tongue. Debi’s personal favorite is the peach and cheese kolache; she says the two flavors marry together so well. The poppy has a unique and delightful flavor, while the plum offers a decadent sweet treat. If you find yourself in the mood for something a little more piquant, we suggest going after the filling jalapeno sausage kolache that has the perfect amount of kick. Honestly, do yourself a favor and pick up some of these incredible pastries – the Peeps at Penguin

Exploring the Uses of

Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) By Dr. Leigh Ann Greenberg, PharmD, RPh

N

Naltrexone is not a new drug. The FDA approved it for opioid and alcohol addiction in 1984 at 50 mg dosing. Low dose naltrexone refers to 0.5-5 mg dosing. Although it is an opioid receptor blocker, low doses have shown many therapeutic benefits. LDN works by increasing the release of endorphins (feel-good chemicals) which your body naturally makes as a way to relieve pain. There is also evidence that blocking certain immune system proteins contributes to anti-inflammatory and immune dampening effects. Most chronic and autoimmune diseases are related to inflammation. By targeting the underlying problem, LDN may be able to help relieve symptoms of so many different conditions. People have reported benefits such as reduction in pain and fatigue. In patients with autism, it may help with behavior and promote calmness. It has been used for Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, Hashimoto’s, and more. Over 600 published studies have been conducted with LDN. The great news is that there are very few patients that experience side effects to this medication. Some patients have experienced vivid dreams or difficulty sleeping. Very rarely patients may experience nausea or constipation/diarrhea. Side effect usually decrease after a couple of weeks of use, but we can also adjust the dose or route of administration to help alleviate them. LDN can be made in several different dosage forms based on your needs. It is most commonly made as a capsule, but it can also be made into a suspension, sublingual solution, or topical cream for patients that may be unable to swallow a capsule or don’t take oral medication easily, like children. LDN does not work immediately and it may take a few weeks or months to see a difference. For some people it may take up to 6 months to see the full benefit at the maximum dose. Because naltrexone is not commercially available at

low doses, a reputable compounding pharmacy must make the dose you need. The key to success is working with providers who have an understanding that optimal dosing is specific for every individual. Annie’s Apothecary is currently compounding LDN for patients with various autoimmune diseases such as alopecia areata, Hashimoto’s, Crohn’s Disease, autism, weight loss, and dermatitis. There has also been benefit of using LDN for dermatitis in dogs! LDN may not be appropriate for everyone so please ask one of our pharmacists or talk to your doctor and see if it may be a good option for you. We are happy to supply you and your physician with the research studies to support the use for your diagnosis. For more information, attend one of our Fall Into Health Seminar Series or visit our YouTube Channel for recorded seminars. You can also check out these online resources www.ldnresearchtrust.org and www.lowdosenaltrexone.org. A recent article was released last month on NPR and can be found on their website www.NPR.org by searching for “naltrexone”. There’s no reason to let your quality of life be dampened by a diagnosis. Get informed and spread the word so you and others can get the relief they need to start enjoying every day to its fullest. BBM
