NEW STUDIO OFFERS ELEVATED EXPERIENCE FOR CLIENTS by Lauren Stumberg | photos by The Marvelous Mrs. Lindsey

Ideal Health Boerne is excited to announce their brand-new location. “The new studio is just amazing and we couldn’t be more pleased with the way it turned out. It is light, bright, airy and has this calm, welcoming atmosphere for our clients,” said Traci Brown, co-owner and head coach of Ideal Health Boerne. The main advantage of Ideal Health’s new space is that they now offer more gym space. According to Traci, “The gym space is where we hold our fitness classes, but also it is available to our clients to come and workout on their own as well.” The fitness classes currently offered by Ideal Health Boerne include Mat Pilates taught by Bethany Hoegemeyer, Mixxed Fit by Katie Meuth and Resistance Training by Tiffany Pressler. “Even though we have expanded the gym space, our classes still have that boutique-style, personal trainer feel that our clients love. Each class has a maximum of 8-9 people, so you are really getting the personal training

10

BOERNE BUSINESS MONTHLY | January 2024

experience without the price tag,” added Traci. Class packages are $60/month for unlimited classes and access to the open gym, or $10/class for drop-ins and the first class is free. The whole purpose of the fitness studio at Ideal Health Boerne was to create a space that was not threatening or intimidating. “The fitness studio has really been a game changer for many of our clients. We knew that some of our dieters would never step foot in a traditional gym, so we brought the gym to them. The classes are small, personal and suitable for any skill level. They can start where they are at and

progress from there. We have also been very intentional in choosing the fitness trainers as well,” said Brown. Having had much success in her own weight loss journey, Traci was inspired to help others do the same. She teamed up with local physician and friend, Dr. Ben Stahl, and in 2019 they opened their own clinic. Originally located inside of Boerne Family Medicine, it didn’t take long for Ideal Health Boerne to need a larger space, and soon outgrew that space

as well. “Since we began this business we have seen our clients lose over 14,000 pounds,” said Brown. “The transformations we have witnessed among our clients have been truly inspiring. We want so much more for them than just weight loss though. We want to help them live healthier lives and provide them with the support system they need to stay on track!” Traci’s passion for wellness is still going strong. She recently became a NASM Certified Nutrition Coach and is working on her personal training certification. “I know what losing weight and getting healthy has done for me. It has given me my life back. I was watching life go by, I wasn’t actively participating in it. Now I do things with my kids and family. I want that continued on page 12

for my clients too – I want their lives to be transformed just as mine has been,” said Traci enthusiastically. As part of her journey to wellness, Traci is determined to figure out what true health looks like not only for herself, but her clients. “In addition to the original packaged food plans, we now are focusing on the creation of individual nutrition plans created to meet specific goals that incorporate whole foods and clean eating.” Clients are given access to oneon-one coaching, wellness education, and accountability. They are taught to read labels on their food and what they are looking for. They work to create a positive mental attitude towards their health journey, while getting rid of the negative connotations of the typical diet culture. “Our clients are becoming actively involved in the process. They are owning their journey and understanding that their results are directly related to their actions. I always tell them that I make suggestions, but you make decisions.”

12

“Giving my patients access to good, weight related counseling was hard up until partnering with Traci,” said Dr. Ben Stahl. “It is nice knowing that I have a trusted source to direct my patients to. She is so knowledgeable and motivational that we have been seeing great results not only in weight loss, but in the patients’ outlook and how they feel. I love that Ideal Health Boerne sees weight loss as just the first step towards achieving health and wellness. With this program we really empower our clients to change their habits and choices long term, resulting in a healthier, happier life. As a physician, I talk about weight loss with 60-70% of my patients, there are so many weight related illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, sleep apnea and the list goes on. With so many different weight loss plans out there, people generally see initial success, but then gain the weight back. The key here is changing your lifestyle for lasting wellness.” Something new that Ideal Health Boerne is now offering is nutritional counseling for those who are on prescription weight loss medicine. “Dr. Stahl requires that all of his patients on this medicine come to us for nutrition counseling and accountability. It is important for these clients to be educated on proper nutrition and eating habits to not only maximize the benefits of the medicine, but to be able to change their lifestyle so they can keep the weight off once they are no longer taking it,” said Traci. This service is available to anyone taking these medications, regardless of what physician they are using. Packages start at $200 for the initial four appointments and then can be continued for maintenance and accountability as needed for $50/appointment. According to Brown, “Teaching my clients about the life-changing benefits of a whole food nutrition-based diet has really become a passion of mine. I have seen the dramatic results of clean, healthy eating and exercise in my own life and I want that for my clients too! Being able to help others change their life for the better is what this is all about.” BBM

BOERNE BUSINESS MONTHLY | January 2024

by James Hurst

Johann Carl Bonnet arrived in Texas with his parents and four siblings in 1846. They had emigrated from Charlottenburg, Nassau, Prussia and sailed to Texas aboard the Harriet as part of the Meusebach colony. They landed at Galveston where they endured may hardships and delays, faced an epidemic of fever in Indianola, and finally reached New Braunfels after an ox-team trip of three weeks. A few months later, they moved to San Antonio, and lived in tents on the banks of the river. By 1850, Johann Carl was known as John Charles, and he was a stone mason. In July of that year, he married Anna Eliza Klemm, and they had their first child, Caroline Emilie shortly thereafter. In 1856, he acquired a piece of ground along Joshua Creek, between Boerne and Comfort, where he raised cattle. Albert and August Beversdorf had settled there a few years earlier, and never seemed to be molested by the Indians. Charles hoped to share in their good luck, but family stories tell that the first night he moved up there, the Indians stole and slaughtered one of his fat work oxen only a few yards from where he slept. In the agricultural census of 1860, he had 15 improved acres,

145 unimproved, a horse and 71 head of cattle. By then, he and Eliza had added six more children to the household: twin girls, Elise, and Marie in 1854, Phillip in 1856, Wilhemina in 1857, Charles II in 1858, and Ernest in 1860. Charles became a citizen of the United States on December 31, 1860, through his father, Phillip Bonnet who was still living in San Antonio. Less than five weeks later, Texas seceded from the Union. Having just sworn allegiance to his new country, is it any wonder that he and his sons were Union sympathizers? Charles signed the petition to form Kendall County in 1859 and was on the first commissioners court in 1862. He served in the Comfort militia for precinct two. He did not serve long; his Union sympathies had him avoiding the Confederates. His brother Peter went to Mexico with Adolph Zoeller to join the Union Army. He and seven other men were shot swimming across the Rio Grande on October 12, 1862, and Peter died a few days later in Piedras Negras. At the end of 1863, after evading conscription in the Confederate Army for over 15 months, Charles and the Beversdorf brothers also traveled to Mexico to join the Union Army. His brothers Daniel and William went with them. He enlisted in Brownsville as a private in Co H, 1st Regiment Texas Calvary, February 1, 1864, for three years, was appointed First Lieutenant and got stationed at the Gulf of New Orleans. In January 1865, he wrote his commanding officer requesting a discharge. “Being driven off by the rebs from my home in the State of Texas, I left a wife and nine children alone where there is nobody to take care for. My family is in a great want, as the last letter from my wife states, so that I am compelled to ask for my discharge.” Charles was discharged on February 7, 1865, in New Orleans but did not officially muster out until November 4th in San Antonio. Charles returned home and continued to raise cattle, which he butchered and took to market. When the 1870 Census was taken, the oldest daughter Emilie had married and moved to Kerr County. Eliza and Charles had two more daughters, Ida, born in 1866, and Lena, born in 1868. Eliza died 1878 and was buried in the Boerne Cemetery. Two years later, Charles married Catherine Chambers Farschon, who had a child from her previous marriage. She and Charles had five children together. Lillian, born 1881, Joseph, born 1884, Louise, born 1886, and twin girls, Alice, and Kathryn, born 1888. Charles died in 1892

and was buried with his first wife Anna Eliza Klemm. In 1900, Catherine was living in Boerne with three of her daughters. By 1910, she had moved to San Joaquin, California where she was living with her sons, Joseph Bonnet, and William Farschon, and her daughter-in-law, Ethel Bonnet. In 1920, Catherine Bonnet was listed as head of the household in San Joaquin. Her son Joseph was living with her, as was her stepson, 50-year-old John Bonnet. Her son, William Farschon, and daughter-in-law, Ethel, were living elsewhere, but there were three granddaughters and two grandsons living with her. Catherine passed away in San Joaquin on April 23, 1939, and was buried in the St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Modesto, California. Charles’ grave had three stones. A broken one which was barley legible, had a death date of January 22, 1892, a government type foot stone captioned with his military service, which has his death year as 1893, and a newer stone erected by his descendants, which continued on page 18

also lists 1893 as his death year. The new stone is inscribed with the Latin phrase which translates to “The Light Shines in the Darkness,” and “Placed in loving memory by his descendants 2005.” The project to replace the broken stone was led by Dr. Kenneth Bonnet of Riverside, Connecticut. About 30 descendants attended a memorial service on June 3, 2006, conducted by Dr. Bonnet. Family names in attendance included Kaiser, Durst, Eichelmann, Cain, Sewell, Schmidt, Kutzer and Shrader. Records from Ebensberger Funeral Home, which conducted the original burial rites and assisted with the memorial 114 years later, lists January 22, 1892, as the actual death date. BBM

Return of the Formal Dining Room

Wide open spaces are great for entertaining, but finding a separate space to create memorable family meals is what many people are looking for. A space for reconnecting over a meal, free from the distractions of a TV or a cell phone sound like just what we all need. Along with formal dining spaces, the desire for dedicated living rooms and other purpose dedicated spaces will grace design in 2024.

Nature Comes Indoors

Windows are becoming bigger and bigger, allowing more nature to play a roll in home design. Indoor plants fill empty spaces and create a tie between the indoors and outdoors. Homeowners are gravitating towards the calm, conscious design that living plants create. Nature-inspired elements and design improve well-being, highlight a connection with nature, and awaken a sense of responsibility toward the environment. Embracing the trend could be as easy as keeping windows bare to take in the view, including pot plants, and being environmentally conscious in your design choices.

Design Trends for 2024

E

Each year, experts send out their design trends for the coming year and the predictions for 2024 offers some interesting home design features. Some of the trends have been around for a while, but will play center stage instead of a supporting role. Time will tell if we all decide to adopt some of the trends and whether they will stick around for long.

Warmer Hues for Paint and Furniture

We have become accustomed to white and grey interiors. From white walls and white furniture to white tiles against dark grey flooring and accents. 2024 will see more earth tones and warmer neutrals. Deeper hues and the return of brown in accents and furniture colors. The more natural tones create a calm harmonious sense of balance and visual interest without overwhelming the eye.

BOERNE BUSINESS MONTHLY | January 2024

Cozy Quiet Luxury

"Maybe it is the ‘quiet luxury’ effect, but I anticipate a trend toward relaxed and casual luxury, specifically when it comes to furniture," says Jen Samson of Jen Samson Design. "Clients will lean more towards comfortable, lived-in furniture rather than smooth clean, and sterile looks." BBM

Personal Touches

Finally, authenticity is becoming a key pillar for interior design – and will stick around beyond the trends of 2024. Character and personality attract, and when it comes to interiors, what’s unique draws you in as every piece tells a story. Vintage finds, artisanal craftsmanship, and personalized decor bring warmth and individuality to homes. Family heirlooms and treasured pieces passed down from generations help a house feel like a home.

Local Resident Publishes First Poetry Book

Rick Maxson is proud to have published Under the Pearl Moon. In it, the gorgeous poems are accompanied by interludes of evocative memoir, where we travel with Rick from Ohio to Spain, California to Carolina, Texas to Florida—and more. Maxson has moved more times than you can count, and with each move he's brought poetry forward to this crowning moment. A lifetime of experience, gathered into a luminous book of poems, Under the Pearl Moon takes you into the arms of love, wisdom, nature—and, of course, a glorious share of pearls and the moon. Maxson is the Every Day Poems permissions editor and a contributor at Tweetspeak Poetry. His poems have been published in Tania Runyan’s How to Read a Poem: Based on the Billy Collins Poem “Introduction to Poetry” and How to Write a Form Poem: A Guided Tour of 10 Fabulous Forms, as well as in Sara Barkat’s Earth Song: A Nature Poems Experience. Maxon’s work has also appeared on The Poetry Foundation’s The Slowdown podcast. "In Under the Pearl Moon, Richard Maxson brings several places into their fullness, exploring them through memory, relationship, rejection, and layer on layer of wonder and questioning. These poems, each with jewel-like detail, help to tell a story

of longing, leaving, return, and promise.” — Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer, author of All the Honey “I absolutely love this book. Under the Pearl Moon is more than a collection of masterful poems; it is a chronicle of a well-lived life. Weaving prose pieces with poetry, Rick Maxson skillfully creates a rich personal mythology of geography and memory—from the 1950s to present day, from growing up in a Craftsman home in Columbus, Ohio, to adult life in rural romantic North Carolina, and then on to Florida. His paradise may in fact be along North Carolina’s Eno River where he would ‘so quietly live / among the particles of light and air,’ and yet his poem, ‘Tree Frog,’ encapsulates the compelling, grand theme of the collection: ‘You make me remember...the mysteries of the world...as I stumble in darkness with open eyes.’” — Dave Malone, author of O: Love Poems from the Ozarks “Rick Maxson’s poems — interspersed with brief personal essays bridging the geographical and psychic residencies of his life—sing with birds living inside a Home Depot, scintillate with ‘solder stars’ from a father’s glass workshop, and stick to our fingers like the powdery binding of a decaying book of fairy tales. In the sensory intricacies of Maxson’s language, we find a poetry so personal, so singularly woven with the memories of a life lived reflectively, that we can’t help but find our own stories in the pages. Reading these poems is like basking in shared moonlight.” — Tania Runyan, author of How to Read a Poem and How to Write a Form Poem “In lines full of music and pleasure and longing, Rick Maxson plots the rivers of his life, offering glimpses of love and hardship, of the working-class neighborhood where he spent his boyhood, of his travels and travails, his parents’ desires and desperation, and his own path into a life rich with change. By making art of memory, he reminds us that we are ‘sounds living for a moment, each one / disappearing into the next, / then each one gone.’” — Todd Davis, author of Native Species BBM

NEW YEAR’S FINANCIAL RESOLUTIONS

N

Now that we’ve reached 2024, you might be thinking about your goals and hopes for the new year. But in addition to whatever personal resolutions you might make — volunteering, going to the gym more, learning a new language and others — why not make some financial resolutions, too? Here are a few to consider: BOOST YOUR RETIREMENT SAVINGS. If you can afford it, try to increase your contributions to your IRA and 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. The more you put away in these accounts, the greater your chances of reaching your retirement goals. At a minimum, contribute enough to your 401(k) to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered. And whenever your salary goes up, consider raising the amount you put in to your 401(k). REDUCE YOUR DEBTS. It’s not always easy to reduce your debts — but it’s worth the effort. The lower your debt load, the greater your monthly cash flow. So, look for ways to consolidate debts or find other, possibly more productive, ways of using credit. And if you truly can’t afford something that’s nonessential, don’t go into debt for it. “Live within your means” is an old piece of advice, but it’s just as valid now as ever. BUILD AN EMERGENCY FUND. If you suddenly needed a major home or car repair, or received a large medical bill not fully covered by insurance, would you have the funds available? If not, you might be forced to dip into your retirement accounts or other long-term investments. To avoid this possibility, try to build an emergency fund containing several months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account that’s separate from the ones you use to meet your daily expenses. It can take a while to build such a fund, but if you make it a priority and contribute regular amounts each month, you can make good progress.

36

AVOID EMOTIONAL DECISIONS. Too many people > edwardjones.com | Me overreact to events in the financial markets because they let their emotions get the better of them. If the market is temporarily down, it doesn’t mean you need to sell investments to “cut your losses” — especially if these investments still have good fundamentals and are still appropriate for your portfolio. It can be hard to ignore market volatility, but you’ll be better off if you focus on the long term and continue following an investment strategy that’s designed to meet your needs. REVIEW YOUR GOALS. Over time, your goals may have changed. For example, while you once might have wanted to Our Insured retire early, and planned for it, you may now find that you’d like Bank D C to work a few more years. If that’s the case, you mayDeposit also needInsurance to adjust your financial and investment strategies. By using o REVISIT YOUR ESTATE PLANS. If you’ve married, convenience divorced, remarried or added children to your family within the on one investments past few years, you may need to review the accounthelp titling and everyth ensure beneficiary designations on your 401(k) and other retirement assets, along with your estate-planning documents, such as your will or living trust. You might also need to revise these documents in other ways. Of course, you may nottogether be able to tackle all these resolutions at Let’s work to find the right strategy to Extra one time, but if you can work at them throughout the year, youprotection can keep your youfinancial on track.
