A peek inside the traditions, joys and childhood magic that shape the
heart of the holidays
THE HOLIDAYS come alive through the people who make Decatur feel like home. From cookiefilled kitchens to twinkling lights and overstuffed stockings, some of our favorite local entrepreneurs share the childhood traditions that still inspire them and the joy they hope to pass along. These stories remind us why communities like ours shine brightest this season.
COURTNEY CARTER, GALLERY MANAGER, WILD OATS AND BILLY GOATS
What holiday tradition from your childhood still inspires you today?
The Holiday tradition that still inspires me today is baking/decorating Christmas cookies. I come from a large family and it's the one time of the year where everyone's creativity comes to life. It always ends up being the funniest , soul fulfilling time of the year.
Your go-to gift recommendation from your shop this year.
I would definitely recommend our holiday ornaments. Every ornament is unique in its own way since they are handmade by our artists. We have glass, encaustic, felt, acrylic, wood and our most favorite are the vintage Hot Wheels with holiday embellishments on top by NKP Designs.
What do the holidays mean to you and your family?
A time to spend with family is what holidays mean to us . Creating funny holiday moments are big in my family , we always break out some kind of family game or the karaoke machine for endless laughs and entertainment. We love being together and that is important to our family.
SIERRA WALLIS, STORE OWNER, ODD BIRD
What holiday tradition from your childhood still inspires you today?
We had loads of fun holiday traditions growing up. One of my favorites was opening one gift on Christmas Eve when I was a kid. Now as a parent, I can see exactly what my parents were up to with that idea. Our Christmas Eve gifts were always something interactive and dynamic—in other words, something to keep us busy. Craft kits, board games or outdoor toys were always possibilities. Now with my kids, I continue that tradition—it’s a great way to keep them entertained and out from underfoot.
Your go-to gift recommendation from your shop this year.
There’s not one gift that suits every single person. If there were, I guess we’d just sell that one thing. That being said, there are a few tried and true gifts that will please even the pickiest of people.
Someone you barely know: Something practical. Page-A-Day calendar, cozy socks, or a notebook with a few fun pens.
Someone who has everything: Food. Classy caramels are always a winner, especially when tucked inside a handmade coffee mug.
Someone decades younger than you: Anything squishy, fidget-y, or Jellycat.
Someone decades older than you: Scented lotions, portable hand warmer, a puzzle.
What do the holidays mean to you and your family?
My kids are young, so we’re still creating our own holiday traditions. As a gift shop owner, it’s a little tricky situation because while everyone else is enjoying the holiday season, I’m fretting about how many stuffed animals I’ve ordered and whether or not the 120 pairs of holiday socks I ordered will arrive on time. However, I’m trying hard to take time for myself and my family to do all the fun holiday things - we’ll be watching the tree lighting in Avondale tomorrow night, seeing Santa at Leon’s next week, and attending all the holiday school functions. Boy, I sure do wish December were two months long.
SUNNY BOWLES, CO-OWNER, LITTLE SHOP OF STORIES
What holiday tradition from your childhood still inspires you today?
There are so many to choose from, but I have very fond memories of piling into the car with my whole family and delivering our annual gift of Georgia pecans to all of my parents' friends and looking at Christmas lights way past my bedtime.
Your go-to gift recommendation from your shop this year. This feels a little bit like asking me to pick my favorite child. Little Shop of Stories has books signed by some of your favorite authors like Dav Pilkey, Jeff Kinney and Rebecca Ross. We can also help you find the perfect book to read aloud with your family or an adorable book and plush combination. When all else fails, we have gift cards. They are always the right size and can be used the whole year through.
What do the holidays mean to you and your family?
Nothing compares to the magic in the air this time of year. It is a time to believe in something larger than yourself. It is a time to gather with friends and family and celebrate being together. It is a time when we stop and think of others and what they might like or what brings them joy. In my family, Christmas means being together, maintaining serious and silly traditions, embracing our inner child, and spreading as much joy and light as possible.
TANNER CROTTY, MANAGER, KELLY'S MARKET
What holiday tradition from your childhood still inspires you today?
A childhood tradition that I still get inspired with to this day would be the over-stuffing of stockings. Having a present littered tree is always great, but the sight of an overflowing stocking that I get to open, or watch someone open is always a treat.
Your go-to gift recommendation from your shop this year.
My go-to-gift would be one of our gift cards. I would like to think a lot of products in here are a great gift, but it is also an experience that I would like to think we provide. If I did have to pick a single product out, I probably would pick a bottle of Jeeper Champagne. Who doesn’t like drinking bubbles on Christmas, especially good bubbles and a fun bottle.
What do the holidays mean to you and your family?
The holidays to me and my family are more so about the gathering and comradery. At this time in my life, we are really settling into our own traditions, and still trying to figure out what some are. It is a great excuse to be together, cut up and just enjoy some end of the year time that I think everyone is really needing this year.
PAULA CONNOR, CATERING AND SPECIAL EVENTS, OAKHURST MARKET
What holiday tradition from your childhood still inspires you today? Baking cookies, making fudge.
Your go-to gift recommendation from your shop this year. Poppy Popcorn
What do the holidays mean to you and your family?
The holidays mean spending time with friends and family and being so thankful for all that we have. Lots of love and laughter.
JEN SINGH & RACHEL HERZOG, CO-OWNERS, GARAGE DOOR STUDIO
What holiday tradition from your childhood still inspires you today?
Rachel: Decorating the tree. As we put each ornament up, sharing the memories around that ornament. Whether it was handmade in school as a child, or later in life, bought on a vacation or received as a gift. Sharing the moments again together every year, is a memory within itself.
Jen: For me, it’s mixing up a triple batch of cutout sugar cookies and storing them into the freezer for slow savoring… or so the plan goes as I remember going to the big freezer in the basement to sneak them. With my crew, they rarely survive long enough on the counter.
Your go-to gift recommendation from your shop this year. Rachel: We have a stained glass maker, Made by Malia, and I am coveting her mirrored stained glass wall hangings and the multi colored wind chimes that look and sound amazing.
Jen: I’m endlessly swooning over the handmade pottery by Talia Hirsh Pottery, especially those just-right mugs that settle into your hands so perfectly. Pair one with our locally harvested Holiday Spice loose-leaf tea by Almas + Co. and you’ve got a warm and cozy gift.
What do the holidays mean to you and your family?
Rachel: We love coming together on Christmas Eve, having a delicious dinner, opening a gift each (and explaining why we picked it), listening to Christmas music, and talking about the past year and why we are grateful for today.
Jen: We love to spend time cooking together and watching our favorite holiday movies: Elf and The Polar Express. Evenings curled up in the living room, fire glowing, everyone laughing and relaxing, that’s our kind of holiday magic.
What holiday tradition from your childhood still inspires you today?
Growing up, my mom made Christmas fun and interactive by bringing the outside inside. It was tradition to get pine cones and turn them into ornaments. We would spray them with glitter spray paint and hang them up. I do this with my daughters some years to add to the togetherness of the holiday season.
Your go-to gift recommendation from your shop this year. It would have to be the Euca-Mint shower steamers, the perfume oils and the build your own bath salt.
What do the holidays mean to you and your family?
The holidays mean giving the gift of joy and happiness. Seeing our family happy and full of love and life is our favorite thing.

Planning your holiday meals? Use these tips to help protect your home and keep costly repairs off the menu.
• Fats, oils, and grease (F.O.G.s) belong in the trash, so throw away any leftovers before the dishes hit the sink.
• Costs for emergency repairs can jump 50% during the holidays, so keeping F.O.G. out of your pipes prevents costly, messy backups.
• Skip the pre-rinse by scraping dishes into the trash before washing. You can save up to 6,000 gallons of water a year.
