The Medium Is the Message – And Politics Knows It Well
In today’s political landscape, the way a message is delivered often matters more than the message itself. The famous phrase coined by communication theorist Marshall McLuhan, “the medium is the message,” perfectly captures the reality of modern politics, where the form of communication influences how people perceive and react to information, sometimes more than the content itself.
We live in an era of constant political turbulence, where headlines are designed to provoke, social media amplifies outrage, and debates are shaped not by reasoned discourse but by the battle for engagement. This shift is not accidental—it’s the result of how today’s media landscape operates.
The Crisis of Political Communication
Politics has always been about persuasion, but today, it has become about performance. Speeches, policies, and even governance itself are often struc-

The key to stress reduction in your life is to let go and let God. So how do you do this? You make Jesus the manager of your life.
The problem is, we usually want to be the manager of our own lives, and so we argue and disagree with God. We think we know what’s best. The reason you’re under a lot of stress is that you’re constantly fighting God in your mind: “I know God says to do this, but I want to do that instead!”
Every morning when you wake up, you have a decision to make: Who’s going to be in charge of your life? Who’s going to be in control—you or God? Who’s going to call the shots—you or God? Every day, moment by moment, you are making this decision. When you choose to make
tured around what will gain traction online, not necessarily what will serve the public best. The modern political communicator is not just a leader or policymaker but an influencer, crafting messages designed for clicks, shares, and virality.
As a result, the political debate has become dominated by:
1. The Algorithm Over Accuracy
Social media thrives on emotion-driven content—the more extreme, the more engagement it generates. This has led to an explosion of simplified, distorted, or even false information because accuracy is often less important than attention.
2. The Decline of Rational Debate
The days of long-form, thoughtful discussions on policy are fading. Instead, tweets, short videos, and memes drive political conversations. Complex issues that require context and nuance are boiled down into catchy slogans that fit into a 15-second clip.
3. The Fear Factor
Fear has always been a political tool, but today’s media makes it a primary strategy. Politicians and interest groups understand that fear and outrage spread faster than hope and unity, so their messages are often crafted to trigger emotional responses rather than encourage critical thinking.
4. The Problem of Polarization
Because today’s media consumption is personalized and algorithm-driven, people are increasingly locked in ideological echo chambers. Instead of diverse perspectives, they see reinforcement of their existing beliefs, making compromise and constructive dialogue more difficult than ever.
What Does This Mean for the Future?
The impact of this politicized media landscape is profound. Even when messages contain valuable content, their form often weakens their credibility. If a politi-

yourself the manager of your own life, it causes conflict, confusion, and stress.
Jesus says in Matthew 16:24, “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am” (MSG). Here’s what Christians tend to do: When we become believers in Christ, we give him the driver’s seat. But then we promptly hop into the backseat and become backseat drivers. We’re constantly giving him advice like, “No, turn this way. Stop. Wait. Faster! I want to go that way. I want to see that sight.”
Many years ago, Kay and I took dancing lessons. The instructor told us one of the biggest problems couples have is letting the other lead. When they’re both trying to lead, they’re stepping on each other’s feet all the time, and it doesn’t look
very pretty.
Your life doesn’t look very pretty when you’re trying to help God lead. Instead, let God be God and make Jesus the manager of your life.PLAY today’s audio teaching from Pastor Rick >>

What details of your life are most difficult for you to surrender to God?

For those of us in media and communication, this presents a challenge: how do we restore substance over spectacle? How do we create spaces for real discussion, where ideas are debated on their merit rather than on their ability to generate outrage?
It is up to us—journalists, business leaders, and community voices—to demand better. We must recognize that the way we consume, produce, and share information shapes the world around us. If we continue to let the medium dictate the message, we risk losing sight of the truth, depth, and responsibility that communication should uphold.
Let’s remember that the medium matters, but so does the integrity of the message.

Have you trusted Jesus for your salvation?
The Bible says you can only get to heaven by trusting in God through his Son, Jesus Christ—you don’t need to earn God’s love or work your way into heaven. The Bible says, “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast”(Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV).

How to Dodge Fraudsters When You’re in Financial Distress

(StatePoint) Although fraudsters will prey on anyone, many tactics specifically target those facing financial hardship in the wake of a natural disaster.
To help you avoid becoming a victim when you’re most vulnerable, Freddie Mac is providing these tips and insights:
Watch Out for Common Disaster-Related Scams
As the intensity of severe weather events increases, understanding common disaster-related scams can help you avoid them. These include:
High-Interest Loans for Repairs: In this scam, someone may offer to loan you money for home repairs, often at a high interest rate, while you wait for your insurance money. In return, they ask for a post-dated check, your auto title or your tax refund. Although this may provide short-term relief, it’s an example of predatory lending because the high interest rates could end up costing you more in the long term. Read any contract before signing it, and make sure you understand the total cost of the loan, including its terms and fees.
Repair Contractor Prepayment: In this scam, your home repair contractor may ask you to sign a “direction to pay form” that allows your insurance company to pay the contractor directly, even before the repair work is completed. This can leave you vulnerable to incomplete or poor quality work. To avoid this scam, read your contract carefully and do not authorize the full payment amount until you are satisfied with the final product.
Requests for Financial Information: In this scam, a person claiming to be a government employee or disaster relief professional may request financial information, saying they need it to help you recover from a crisis. Protect yourself by never giving anyone your personally identifiable information by
phone, email, text or in person without confirming their identity. For example, ask for identification and independently call the entity the person claims to work for.
If You’re Struggling to Pay Your Mortgage, Beware of Fraudsters
If you’re struggling to pay your mortgage after a natural disaster or due to other circumstances and you are facing foreclosure, be on the lookout for two common types of fraud.
Foreclosure Rescue Fraud: In such a scheme, someone may falsely promise to be able to save your home from foreclosure. The fraudster will commonly:
• Require you to sign the title to your home over to them.
• Ask you to sign unfamiliar documents.
• Ask you to share personal information.
• Charge you rent to stay in your home.
• Offer to pay your delinquent mortgage by purchasing your home.
• Promise that you can repurchase your home when your financial situation improves.
Fraudsters orchestrating these schemes pose as professionals and
promise to stop foreclosure, often at a high price. However, they don’t deliver on their promises. As a result, you could lose the title to your home and be at risk of foreclosure.
Loan Modification Scams: Loan modification scams may operate similarly to foreclosure rescue fraud. In these scams, fraudsters collect an upfront fee and promise to work with your loan servicer on your behalf. They claim that they can obtain a loan modification that reduces your payments.
If someone other than your loan servicer (the company listed on your mortgage statement) offers you mortgage assistance, don’t provide your information.
If you are struggling with your mortgage payment, contact your lender, a certified HUD housing counselor or a housing finance agency. These trustworthy resources can present you with real options to help avoid foreclosure.
Learn more fraud prevention tips by visiting myhome.freddiemac.com.
Unfortunately, fraudsters have made it their business to prey on pain. With the right knowledge, you can help ensure that no one takes advantage of you when you’re down on your luck.
Sending Your Support to U.S. Military Members

(StatePoint) A simple message of support can go a long way. That’s why to celebrate its 84th birthday, the USO announced its birthday wish is to collect 2 million messages of support this year to honor the more than 2 million people serving in the U.S. military and the families who stand by their side.
“A simple note of support can boost morale and remind service members and military families that they’re not alone, no matter where they serve,” said J.D. Crouch II, CEO and president of the USO.
The messages will be displayed at
over 250 USO centers worldwide in high-traffic, visible locations where service members are most likely to see them, ensuring every sentiment makes an impact.
Generating widespread support back home for the people serving in our nation’s military all over the world, and fostering strong connections between service members and country and home, aligns with the USO’s longtime mission. Since 1941, the USO has been the leading nonprofit dedicated to strengthening the well-being of the people serving in America’s military and their families. The USO goes where ser-
vice members go throughout their time in uniform, providing support from the moment they join the military, through deployments and as they transition back to their communities.
To celebrate the USO’s birthday and send a message of support to service members, and to learn about other ways you can take action, visit USO. org/2MillionMessages.
For service members around the globe, feeling supported and appreciated by Americans can make a big difference.

Boca West Children’s Foundation Rallies Community for 1 Million Diaper Challenge

Boca Raton, FL – In a determined effort to support local families in need, Boca West Children’s Foundation (BWCF) is launching its 1 Million Diaper Challenge, an initiative aimed at collecting one million diapers for the Diaper Bank Covering South Florida by Feb. 28, 2025. Now in its 10th year, the drive has expanded beyond Boca West Country Club to include a friendly competition among Palm Beach County neighborhoods, country clubs, and local organizations.
“One in two families nationwide struggles to afford diapers, and government programs do not cover this basic necessity,” says Pamela Weinroth, executive director of BWCF. “Without an adequate supply of diapers, parents often can’t work or attend school because their children aren’t eligible for daycare or preschool. By aiming for one million diapers, we hope to help break the cycle of poverty and ensure every baby gets a healthy start.”
Last year’s diaper drive, focused on Boca West Country Club residents, netted 300,000 diapers—a feat that inspired this year’s expanded goal. Participating groups now include Boca Grove, Boca West Children’s Foundation, Boca Woods Country Club, Broken Sound Club, Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, PJ Library in South Palm Beach County, Polo Club of Boca Raton, Polo Trace, St. Andrews Country Club of Boca Raton, The Cottone Foundation, and Woodfield Community Foundation. All participating organizations are hosting designated drop-off locations to accept new diapers through Feb. 28, 2025.
Members of the public can also deliver diapers or monetary donations for
diapers to Boca West Children’s Foundation at 20583 Boca West Drive, Boca Raton, FL 33434, or donate online at bocawestfoundation.org/2025-diaper-drive/. A live drop-off event will be held on Feb. 25, 2025, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Boca West Country Club Racquet Center Loop, where all are welcome to see the community’s generosity in action.
“We are incredibly excited and deeply grateful for the support of Boca West Children’s Foundation and their 1 Million Diaper Challenge. This partnership represents a powerful commitment to ensuring that families in our community have access to a basic yet essential need—diapers,” says Dre Garcia, president, The Diaper Bank Covering South Florida. “By uniting neighborhoods, country clubs, and organizations across Palm Beach County, we are making a significant impact together, one diaper at a time.”

Priscilla Presley Wows Boca Fans
By Marci Shatzman

Elvis’ ex, the actress, author and Graceland impresario Priscilla Presley, packed Boca’s The Wick Theatre with two Q&As and meet-and-greets with fans.
An older crowd of mostly women packed the house at the matinee, and after an announcement from managing executive producer Marilynn Wick, 85 fans lined up to meet and take a photo with her. A much younger crowd at the evening appearance, both with interviewer Sandie Newman, and lines out the door for the personal touch. She took time with each one.
Still looking good at 80 on May 24, Presley showed lots of home movies with the icon, including their wedding on May 1, 1967, when he was 32 and she was 21. They met when she was 14. She asked for the out, and they were divorced in 1973. Once their daughter Lisa Marie was born, Presley said she stayed home while he was away performing. “He was working so much and gone all the time. That was the difficult part. A lot of things were going on and I heard about it. I realized we had two (separate) lives.” On a getaway in Palm Springs, she told him “I’m leaving our marriage. I don’t want to live like that with fears of who you were with.” Neither she or Elvis ever remarried, although she had a longterm
relationship and has a son.
Here’s some of Priscilla Presley’s comments at the matinee:
On their daughter Lisa Marie’s sudden death in 2023 at the age of 54: “Lisa was trying to lose weight and was taking too many pills. I had no idea. She didn’t want me to know.” They made plans to meet at the Golden Globes, (“we had separate limos”), but Lisa Marie canceled at the last minute, saying “her stomach hurt, and she couldn’t go. I didn’t hear from her (for a few days). I was called by a woman I didn’t know. It took me 35 minutes to get there,” and she was told “it’s too late. She passed. We went to the room where she was laying. I still can’t get over the loss.”
On Elvis’ sudden death from a heart attack on Aug. 16, 1977, at the age of 42: “I was in L.A. and coming home from an exercise class and was told someone is trying to reach you. It was Elvis’ righthand man.” She asked if they could send a private plane for her, and they did. “He was on the bathroom floor and his girlfriend at the time found him.”
On her son, musician Navarone Garibaldi Garcia, who will be 38 in March: “He is so handsome and talented, my saving grace.” She also put aside rumors of issues with Lisa Marie’s daughter Riley Keough.
On her subsequent acting career in the “Naked Gun Trilogy,” and she showed scenes and talked about her costar Leslie Nielsen, and her role in the TV show “Dallas.” “Hollywood came calling. I’m an animal activist…and I was talked into (acting)…,” she said, calling it, “so much fun.”
On saving the Presley home Graceland in Memphis, Tenn.: Graceland was broke and “it wouldn’t have stayed in the family. We only had three months” to come up with the money. She called investors she knew, and was advised to “go to the people. I wanted to keep Elvis’ legacy alive.”
Final words about Elvis: “I never met anyone who even came close to him.” She wrote a memoir about their relationship, and the subsequent biopic “Priscilla,” directed by Sofia Coppola, is now streaming.

OBITUARY
M. June
Bechthold

M. June Bechthold, a devoted mother, world traveler, and dedicated volunteer, passed away peacefully under the care of Heartland Hospice at Charter Senior Living of Oak Openings on Sunday February 16, 2025, where she had resided in memory care for the past five years. She was 82 years old.
June, as she was known to all, graduated from Northwestern University in 1963, completing her bachelor’s degree in business in just three years. It was
there she met her first husband, George Bechthold, while offering to type his papers after he sustained an arm injury. Following their marriage, she accompanied him to California during his U.S. Navy service, and later traveled with their young daughter to Japan and southeast Asia, fostering a lifelong appreciation for Asian art and design that would influence her home décor throughout her life.
Following the loss of her first husband in 1982, June demonstrated remarkable resilience. She later married Allan Sacks in Kansas City, and they relocated to Deerfield Beach, Florida. There, June dedicated herself to community service, most notably contributing 8,500 hours over 20 years as a volunteer with the Debbie Rand Memorial Service League at Boca Raton Community Hospital, where she became a life member. Her volunteer work extended to the Cartoon Museum of Art in Boca Raton, and she spent many Sundays assisting at a realtor’s open houses in the Royal Palm subdivision.
An avid traveler, June explored every continent except Antarctica, with a particular fondness for cruising. While
she claimed Alaska was her favorite cruise destination—despite her notorious dislike of cold weather—her adventures took her around the world, allowing her to amass an impressive collection of over 1,000 elephants from various countries.
June’s professional life included roles as a volunteer coordinator at hospitals in Kansas City and Boca Raton, and she worked as a personal assistant to Richard Bloch (of H&R Block) in his cancer patient advocacy work. She was also instrumental in supporting her first husband’s management consulting business with her exceptional typing skills and sharp business mind.
Known for her kind and welcoming nature, June possessed a gentle demeanor and was regarded as a classy lady with impeccable taste. She was an ardent fan of “Days of Our Lives” and cherished a chance encounter with stars Doug and Susan Seaforth Hayes at the Toledo Museum of Art, where she volunteered.
June is survived by her daughter, Mary Casper (John) and their children, Estelle and George, of Rockville, Mary-
land; son, Jeffrey Bechthold (Meghan) and their daughters, Emelia and Adalaide, of Bellevue, Washington; brother George Habicht (Cindy); sisters Mary Deneweth (Ron) and Lee Hannah; and brother-in-law James Bechthold (Karen). She was preceded in death by her parents, Myra and Richard Habicht; her first husband, George Walter Bechthold (1982); and her second husband, Allan Jay Sacks (2019).
The family extends special gratitude to the staff at Charter Senior Living of Oak Openings, Heartland Hospice, her primary care provider Joanna Shaw, APRN-CNP (whom June fondly called “the beautiful lady”), and friend Rick Black for his supportive presence during emergency room visits.
A memorial dinner for family and friends is being planned. In lieu of flowers, donations in June’s memory may be made to Debbie Rand Memorial Service League – Scholarship Fund c/o Boca Raton Regional Hospital, 800 Meadows Road, Boca Raton, Florida 33486; or World Central Kitchen, https://donate.wck.org/give/499865/#!/donation/checkout
