Welcome to the 12th Annual Bush’s Boca Raton Bowl of Beans Welcome to the Bush’s Boca Raton Bowl of Beans! We’re so excited for the matchup in the 12th edition of our bowl game. Two teams with identical 8-4 overall records, the Toledo Rockets from the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and the Louisville Cardinals from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), make for a compelling matchup pitting the immovable object – Toledo’s defense – against the unstoppable force – Louisville’s offense. In the 11-year history of this bowl game we’ve seen the edge go to the offense. However, Toledo is making their third appearance in this game and won the previous two, putting them into position to become the first school to claim a third Coach Howard Schnellenberger Championship Trophy. Louisville is the second ACC team to play in this game following Syracuse’s appearance here just two years ago. The Cardinals’

head coach is Jeff Brohm, who was the head coach at Western Kentucky in 2016 when the Hilltoppers earned a berth in our bowl game. But shortly after team matchup announcements that year he accepted an offer to be the head coach of Purdue in the Big Ten Conference. Brohm spent six seasons leading the Boilermakers, earning four bowl bids and winning a division championship in 2022. In 2023, he accepted an offer to be the head coach of his alma mater, Louisville, where he’s led the Cardinals to a 27-12 record and three consecutive bowl games. Louisville also has multiple ties to our trophy’s namesake, Howard Schnellenberger. Schnellenberger was the Cardinals’ head coach from 1985 to 1994 during which Brohm played quarterback from 1989 to 1993. Brohm, a Louisville native, went on to play seven years in the NFL before re-

turning to his hometown to begin his coaching career, first with a local arena league team and then with his alma mater. He rejoined Schnellenberger at FAU for the 2009 season as quarterbacks coach. Toledo becomes the second school to appear in our bowl game three times, following Western Kentucky which had its third appearance last year in a loss to James Madison. Thus, Toledo is looking to become the first three-time winner. The Rockets will be led by interim head coach Robert Weiner who ascended to the role following head coach Jason Candle’s departure to become the new head coach at Connecticut. Weiner came to Toledo in 2020 as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Prior to that, he’d been the head coach at Plant High School in Tampa where he’d mentored quarterback Phillip Ely, who went on to play at Toledo

and was the offensive MVP of the 2015 Boca Raton Bowl. The Rockets finished the season on a roll, winning their last four games to finish in a three-way tie for second in the MAC standings but missing out on playing in the conference championship game due to a tiebreaker. Toledo and Louisville have one common opponent, Kentucky. The Rockets played at Kentucky in their first game of the season, narrowly losing, 24-16, in a game where the score was 10-2 going into a wild fourth quarter where the teams combined for four touchdowns. Louisville defeated Kentucky in the annual Governor’s Cup game, 41-0 at Louisville.

School: The Univiesity of Toledo Location: Toledo, Ohio Program Began: 1917 Mascot: Rocky the Rocket Record (overall/conference): 8-4, 6-2 (Mid-American Conference)

A look at

Senior running back Chip Trayanum led the Rockets with 950 yards rushing and 13 total touchdowns this season.

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo Rockets enter their bowl game with renewed inspiration to end the 2025 season as champions. Toledo (8-4, 6-2 MAC) will face Louisville (8-4, 4-4 ACC) in the 2025 Bush’s Boca Raton Bowl of Beans at FAU’s Flagler Credit Union Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla. on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 2:00 p.m. on ESPN. Since the Rockets did not get an opportunity to play in the MAC Championship game this season, a bowl victory would be their only chance to hoist a trophy in 2025. “Our challenge is, how can we play a game at a championship level?” said Co-Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach ROBERT WEINER Who is serving as the team’s interim head coach. “How can we leave a legacy of 9-4 for the 2025 Toledo Rockets and put some pictures of this team on the walls in the Larimer building that people will remember for a long time?” Weiner is filling in for Jason Candle, who departed for the head coaching position at UConn following 10 seasons in which he became Toledo’s all-time victory leader. Nevertheless, Weiner said he expects the Rockets to be highly motivated to play an ACC opponent in a bowl game for the second consecutive season. The excitement in the program following last year’s 48-46 victory over Pittsburgh in six overtimes is a subtle reminder of how important a bowl victory can be to a football program. “I think our players are really charged and energized for this,” said Weiner. “Obviously with Coach Candle leaving, we had a brick of firecrackers that took off in all different directions. But, the next day they rallied as a unified group that

was ready to say, ‘Let’s go do this thing.’ And that’s exactly what we’re going to do. It’s a huge challenge in front of us, but I’ve watched all the history of the Toledo Rockets, and the Toledo Rockets never back down from a challenge.” Toledo’s players echoed Weiner’s comments. “As long as we’re here, we will give everything we’ve got,” said sophomore linebacker CHRIS D’APPOLONIA “That’s the mentality we have right now going into this game.” Added senior running back CHIP TRAYANUM “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to play in the MAC Championship Game, but I think we can go out here and finish off this season the right way, like we know we can.” Trayanum, who previously played at Arizona State, Ohio State and Kentucky, said sitting out the bowl game was never a consideration for him. “It was never a question. I’m playing,” said Trayanum, a First-Team All-MAC pick who has rushed for 950 yards and scored 13 total touchdowns this season. “I owe Toledo a lot. Toledo’s been great for me, especially for my last stop in my college journey. I just want to go and finish it off the right way for my last college game.”

Toledo, which is playing in a bowl game for the fifth consecutive season, faces a stiff challenge in southeast Florida. Among Louisville’s eight victories were triumphs over two teams in the College Football Playoff - Miami (Fla.) and James Madison. The Cardinals also defeated Kentucky and Bowling Green, two teams that bested the Rockets in 2025. Despite losing out on a chance to play in the MAC Championship Game (Toledo tied for second place and lost out on a tie-breaker) the Rockets closed out the 2025 regular season in dominant fashion, winning their final four games and holding opponents to single digits in each contest-a testament to one of the nation’s most elite defenses. The Rockets have the nation’s No. 3 ranked defense (247.8 yards per game) and held opponents to 14 points or fewer seven times. Toledo also led the Mid-American Conference in virtually every significant team stat on both sides of the ball, including scoring offense (31.6) and total offense (421.8). That dominance helped Toledo extend two remarkable streaks: 16 straight seasons of bowl eligibility, the sixth-longest active run in the FBS, and 16 consecutive seasons without a losing record, ranking third nationally. 14 points or fewer seven times. Toledo also led the Mid-American Conference in virtually every significant team stat on both sides of the ball, including scoring offense (31.6) and total offense (421.8). “Toledo is a good football team,” Brohm said. “I know our guys will be excited to play a good football team in the warm weather of Florida. We’re excited to reach the post-season and I know our team will come ready to play. It’s been a good season but we have an opportunity one more time to make it even better.”

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm is known for his offensive prowess throughout his coaching career. However, the Cardinals have reached the postseason in large part because of one of the top defenses in the country. Louisville (8-4, 4-4 ACC) will face Toledo (8-4, 6-2) in the 2025 Bush’s Boca Raton Bowl of Beans at FAU’s Flagler Credit Union Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla. on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 2:00 p.m. on ESPN. The Cardinals enter the postseason with the No. 16 ranked defense in the country, allowing 300.3 yards of total offense per game and just yielding 21.2 points per game. The Cardinals are coming off one of their most dominating performances in recent memory, blanking Kentucky 41-0 in the regular season finale to get to eight wins. It was the culmination of a season that saw so many ups-and-downs. Louisville missed out on the opportunity for a special season by losing three games by a total of seven points – in three point losses to Virginia and Cal in overtime and a one-point loss to Clemson. “They’ve continued to work hard, and put in the effort, they’ve had great attitudes,” Brohm said of his team’s attitude all season. ”They understand that all these small things matter and if you don’t do the small things, you’re not going to win. So, to come out here the last game against our rival with quite a few guys down in numbers and step up and just find ways to play hard for 60 minutes in all three segments – offense, defense, special teams – I couldn’t be prouder. Brohm added,” That’s a credit to our players, what they’re made of, our coaches, what they’re made of, and the fact that it’s a great team… It’s a great team that just works hard. Yeah, you want to try to win every one, but when you do or don’t, you’ve got to come back and do it

again. I just think a lot of guys stepped up, played to the end and gave a great performance in our last regular season game.” Outside of one disappointing performance, the defense has been there all season. While this was their first shutout of the season, the Cards have held five opponents to less than 20 points. “Our defense has been pretty consistent all season,” Brohm said. “They have kept us in a lot of games with how hard they play, and just going play-by-play..” Defensive coordinator Ron English echoed Brohm’s sentiments. “I’m proud to coach these guys,” English said. “They have come to practice and each meeting with the right attitude and mindset. They’ve gone out and performed at a high level each week, and I couldn’t be prouder of this group.” Linebacker TJ Quinn, for the third-straight season, has led the team in tackles and has been the leader of this unit. The native of Valdosta, Ga., is tops on the team with 87 tackles and has enjoyed four games of double-digit tackles. He and D’Angelo Hutchinson led the Cards with 10 tackles in the win over Kentucky to close the season. “These guys just come and compete every day,” Hutchinson said. “To do what we’ve done all year on defense has been impressive. I love the mindset these guys play with and I’m excited to go out one more time against a good Toledo team.” The Cardinals will look for their ninth win of the season for the third-straight year but will face a stiff challenge against Toledo, which is also 8-4 and have an elite defense. The Rockets closed out the 2025 regular season in by winning their final four games and holding opponents to single digits in each contest. The Rockets bring the nation’s No. 3 ranked defense (247.8 yards per game) and held opponents to
