COMMUNITY Boca Raton Historical Society Turns the Page: New Leadership Marks a Fresh Chapter beyond the Centennial As Boca Raton concludes its 100th anniversary year — a time of reflection, celebration, and renewed civic pride — the Boca Raton Historical Society & The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum is marking a milestone of its own. Longtime Executive Director Mary Csar has announced her retirement after more than 26 years of dedicated service, passing the leadership torch to Olivia Hollaus, who will assume the role in early 2026.

Of all the terms used to describe leaders, among the least-mentioned is “shepherd.” Have you ever heard a leader – your boss, another company’s top executive, or even yourself – referred to as a shepherd? If so, you are in a small minority. However, for those who are striving to follow Jesus Christ, the shepherd role is part of our job description.

Very few of us have actual experience as a shepherd, so it is difficult to comprehend what God expects when He encourages us in the Bible to be good shepherds. But that is exactly what He does. In the book of Jeremiah 23, for example, God gives a glimpse of the contrast between a bad and a good shepherd. Through the prophet, Israel’s leaders were warned, “‘You have scattered my flock and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for your evil deeds,’ declares the Lord” ( Jeremiah 23:2). The leaders had demonstrated their failure as shepherds.

In that same chapter of Jeremiah, we find three primary ways God instructs us to be good shepherds. The first challenge is: To care diligently and even sacrificially for our flock.

When God calls us to lead and care for our team members, He desires for us to consider what is best for them, not just what serves for achieving our self-interest. This is what the leaders of Israel had failed to do.

Our second challenge is: To create a peaceful and safe environment for your team. Working directly with customers can leave some employees fearful and anxious. If they do not feel adequately supported by management, this lack of support can result in fear and anxiety and undermine trust.

When other members of our team are striving to do their best, they need to know that, to borrow the phrase, “I’ve got your back.” In other words, I will come to your defense if necessary.

In Jeremiah 23:4 we read, “‘I will set shepherds over them who will care for them, and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be missing,’ declares the Lord.’”

They must rely on their shepherd. In a similar sense, if you desire to see your team members thrive emotionally, you need to create a peaceful environment where they feel supported and protected.

Our final challenge is: Being able to retain the people God has called to your team. Much earlier in my career in the financial industry, I had a person working for me who became verbally abusive and rude to many of our team members. But I faced a dilemma: This person was adding significant value to the organization in other ways, causing me to move slower than I should have in confronting his abusive behavior.

Because I was slow in responding, our workplace environment became toxic, a very unfriendly place to work.

As a result, a number of good people left the organization before I finally determined to address the problem appropriately. This was a painful but important learning experience for me.

Jeremiah 23:1 provides these words of caution that we should take to heart today: “‘Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!’, declares the Lord.” To retain good people, we not only need to care for them, but also address any challenging people and circumstances promptly before they cause significant distress for our “flock.” © 2025, Unconventional Business Network. Reflection/Discussion Questions When you hear the term “shepherd,” what comes to mind? Have you ever heard it used within the context of the typical work environment? If so, in what sense?

“My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20 (NLT) The Bible makes it very clear how we should be praying. It tells us to “pray all the time” (1 Thessalonians 5:17 MSG).

That probably seems impossible to a lot of people. Many people find it hard enough to remember to pray at set times during the day, like at meals or at bedtime or during a consistent quiet time.

How is it possible to pray all the time? One way is to use “breath prayers” throughout the day, as many Christians have done for centuries.

You choose a brief sentence or a simple phrase that can be repeated to Jesus in one breath: “You are with me.”

“I receive your grace.” “I’m depending on you.” “I want to know you.” “I belong to you.” “Help me trust you.”

You can also use a short phrase of Scripture: “For me, to live is Christ.”

“You will never leave me.” “You are my God.” Pray it as often as possible so it is rooted deep in your heart. Just be sure that you’re motivated to honor God, not trying to manipulate him into doing your own bidding. Breath prayers can lead you into a deeper sense of God’s presence and care, if you let

them.

Practicing drawing near to God is a skill; it’s a habit you can develop. Just as musicians practice scales every day to play beautiful music with ease, you can learn how to think about God at different times in your day. You can train your mind to remember God. At first you will need to create reminders to regularly bring your thoughts back to the awareness that God is with you in that moment. Begin by placing visual reminders around you. You might post little notes that say, “God is with me and for me!”

If you are seeking an experience of his presence through all of this, you’ve missed the point. We don’t praise God to feel good but to do good. Your goal is not a feeling but a continual awareness that God is always present.

That is the lifestyle of worship through prayer. That is how you pray all the time.

Talk It Over Try using breath prayers to worship God throughout today. What difference do you notice in your attitude and your interactions with other people?

What visual reminders can best help you be aware of God’s presence?

Think about the way you learned to play an instrument or a sport. How can you apply the same disciplines and energy into developing a lifestyle of worship?

People march on Thanksgiving to express their gratitude for family and health, and food on the table.

Thanksgiving is the time to reflect on the simple joys in life, to express our gratitude for both big and small blessings.

But for many, these are mishigas times, so there will be more that many will seek to have more plentifully this Thanksgiving, perhaps more intensely than ever before!

In many parts of America that something that may be missing are those tarnished and torn, ripped to shreds roots of happiness called peace and calm.

Every day there seems to be yet another disturbing outbreak of something wild and unsettling, whether it’s nutjobs shooting at people on streets, or duly anointed officials herding citizens off them like cattle.

Hey tranquility, where’d you go?

What happened that drove you out of so many cities and towns across America? How do we get you back in time to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving?

So now let me just congratulate Gov. Pritzker for signing an executive order to provide $20 million to food banks with SNAP benefits on the edge of lapsing n Illinois amid the ongoing government shutdown Republicans say Democrats caused and visa versa.

And while we’re at it, let’s for-

give the gov for bemoaning President Trump’s having sent military troops into the windy city to reduce all the running room criminals seemed to have had there. Happy Thanksgiving Gov! And please, Lord, help Elon Musk stop doing what we all must stop, which is aging so fast. And if elected mayor, please help Mamdani quickly acquire economic wisdom to blend with his kind concern for poor New Yorkers struggling to pay rent and buy food.

Next week, look for a poem I just wrote that fits Thanksgiving to a tee, places a holy cross on our rooting for simple joys in life. It’s called “Life on Parade” that hopefully will inspire both those on the left and right to work together to keep America on track as the greatest nation on earth, still a shining city upon a hill.

The Blue Wave extended to my home Township, Wilton, NY. Republicans have controlled the town for many years. Local Dems were determined to challenge this hegemony. We raised money, knocked on doors, had a clear alternative message. All three of our candidates won: Toni Sturm as Supervisor; Conner Rohan and Joe Keneally as Commissioners. The control has shifted from Red to Blue.

The erudite columnist, Jamelle Bouie, put his finger on the major lesson to be learned last night. “There is no singular “people” and there are no permanent majorities.” Trump was able to form a majority coalition around his base, people angry about the cost of living, those who felt unheard and left out.

One year later Democrats have been able to make substantial inroads on the last two cohorts. By listening. By being less arrogant. With a little humility.

They may not hear it, but ‘woke’ is not defining. Cost of groceries is. Many Republicans are perpetuating the lie

that inflation is down. It’s not, it’s up, and everyone knows it. Get voted in using the inflation cudgel, then once in, get it used on you. Poetic Justice.

Any Republican Member of Congress from a swing district that continues to salaam to Trump’s wishes, after last night, should call the Suicide Prevention Hot Line.

“We defeated a dynasty!” Mamdani’s gloat in the midst of a strident and combative victory speech. A speech many pundits criticized as being too forceful; I loved its muscularity. Yes, the Cuomo Dynasty is over.

Good riddance! Mario and Matilda’s precious son is history. Inauthentic, unethical, pompous, immoral, and a political and sexual predator. He will land somewhere, but far from the levers of power. As stated in David Mitchell’s “The Bone Clocks”, power frequently becomes, “the crack cocaine of the ego, and the battery acid of the soul.”

A further affirmation of the victory for women last night was revealed in Mamdani’s choices for his Transition Team. All three are women. Oh, and despite the prediction of the CNN unctuous twit, Scott Jennings, the Mayor Elect is reappointing the respected Jessica Tisch as Police Commissioner.

Newsom rolled the dice and won a huge victory with Prop 50 last night.

Has to be considered the 2028 frontrunner.

Surf Park Rejected for Boca’s Public Park

By Marci Shatzman In a move nobody saw coming and after initial excitement about the project, residents’ objections canceled any plans to put Boca Surf Park in Boca’s new public North Park.

“I’m uncomfortable moving forward,” Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District Commissioner Bob Rollins said about any further consideration of putting an 18-plus acre wave park in Boca Teeca. “It’s a beautiful project but not the right location. The folks who live in that neighborhood are the most vociferous,” he said at the district meeting Monday night.

Screams and loud applause followed Rollins’ remarks and his formal motion to stop the project in its tracks instead of allowing proposers to continue refining their plans. They had just finished their latest presentation that included a video and a PowerPoint showing a smaller footprint and more landscape buffers from neighboring housing. There was no further comment from the presenters after the vote.

Approval of Rollins’ motion to abandon the project wasn’t unanimous.

Especially since commissioners had ranked it first among proposals they were considering. The vote was 3-to2. Saying he wouldn’t want a surf park

The City of Boca Raton Launches Boca Sundy Village Phase I Project Complete

A major step in the transformation of downtown Delray Beach has been reached with the completion of Phase One of the highly anticipated Sundy Village project. The development, led by Pebb Capital, includes the restoration of the historic Sundy House and the creation of a modern mixeduse campus at 22 West Atlantic Avenue.

Phase One delivered approximately 100,000 square feet of Class A office space, 30,000 square feet of retail and dining, and 268 below-ground parking spaces. The project is already nearly 90 percent leased, with tenants that include Vertical Bridge, Barcelona Wine Bar, and Double Knot by Chef Michael Schulson.

The evening will be highlighted by the ceremonial lighting of the City’s tree, led by Mayor Scott Singer and the City Council. Admission to the event is free.

“Deck the House” is a holiday home decorating contest held November 15th – December 15th, where residents compete for not only bragging rights and a trophy, but a spotlight on the city’s social media. Admission is free.

A free concert that features holiday music performed by Florida Atlantic University’s Tuba Ensemble will be held on December 1st at 5 p.m. at Mizner Park Amphitheater.

The 52nd Annual Holiday parade will be on December 4th, 7:30 p.m.-9 p.m. along Federal Highway. Themed “Winter Wonderland,” floats, lights, and community groups will parade through downtown Boca. Admission to the parade is free.

A new event for the Boca Jolly Days, the Holiday Pops Concert will be on December 7th at 7 p.m. at the Mizner Park Amphitheater. A ticketed event with tickets ranging from $10$40 will be conducted by Jacomo Bairos and feature the Symphonia Boca Raton as well as the FAU chorus.

On December 12th, from 6-9 p.m. at Sanborn Square, the Night Market will be held, also hosting a meet and greet with Disney’s Frozen Character, Olaf. The development is designed as a “live-work-play” destination featuring offices, restaurants, green spaces, and retail. Pedestrian-friendly courtyards and shaded walkways are intended to create a community hub connecting west Atlantic Avenue to downtown.

City officials and business leaders have praised the project for revitalizing the western gateway to downtown.

Phase Two of the project is already in progress and will add another 79,000 square feet of office space, a 165-space parking garage, and ground-floor retail. The full Sundy Village buildout, including the reopening of the restored Sundy House, is expected to be completed in the coming year.

City Faces Drainage System Concern After Recent Floods

By Caris Weinberg During Tuesday’s City Council Meeting, Boca Raton residents and officials raised concerns over long-standing flooding problems in several neighborhoods, calling for faster fixes to the city’s storm drainage systems.

Council Member Wigder presented photos during the meeting showing severe flooding in the Old Floresta and Camino Gardens neighborhoods, where there were “three-foot deep river channels through private properties.”

He said that storm drains are often “over 500 feet from problem areas” and quickly clog after heavy rain. “What used to be 100-year storms are now annual,” Wigder said during the meeting, adding that the city’s drainage infrastructure “must accelerate,” keeping pace with changing weather patterns.

Following Council Member Wigder’s response, residents of Spanish Village and Library Commons reported three to four feet of standing water after recent storms, repeated drainage failures despite past City staff urged residents to submit adding that flooding has been chronic infrastructure investments, emphasizing photos and precise locations of flooding for 50 years. Boca Raton has invested in stormwater upgrades over the past decade, but heavy rains, aging infrastructure, and rising sea-levels have continued to overwhelm pre-existing systems. Flooding has been reported repeatedly in neighborhoods across the city, prompting council discussions on how to fund accelerated repairs and better protect residents.

The City Council plans to revisit flooding mitigation updates and stormwater repairs at its next meeting on Tuesday, November 18th, continuing efforts to prioritize both immediate and longterm solutions.

Boca Raton set to Kick Off Holiday Season with Annual Tree Lighting

The free celebration features a tree lighting ceremony that includes live music, food vendors, and more family-friendly activities.

Boca’s iconic and historic Mizner Park plans to transform into a holiday wonderland with 50,000 LED lights adorning 75 palm trees throughout the park, and festive two-dimensional light displays throughout will create perfect photo opportunities in the heart of Downtown Boca Raton. The event begins at 6 p.m. with live music, snow flurries, holiday characters, a craft station, a holiday market, and a variety of

food and drinks for purchase.

At 7:15 p.m. is the time of the evening’s highlight, the lighting of the City’s tree led by Mayor Scott Singer, which will illuminate simultaneously with Mizner Park’s Lighting Display throughout the park. Musical performances continue at 7:30 p.m. including a mix of holiday classics, top 40 hits, and more with “A Very Diva Christmas” and Kazual! Until 10 p.m., attendees can stop by the Boca Raton Museum to snap a photo with Santa Claus.

Residents Rally to Save Little Free Libraries and Pantries in Boynton Beach

Boynton Beach residents packed the City Commission meeting on November 4 to voice their support for preserving the little free libraries and pantries scattered throughout their neighborhoods.

Several speakers urged city officials to amend the land development regulations to specifically exempt these small community structures from current accessory structure rules. They suggested allowing little free libraries and pantries in front and side yards—similar to mailboxes—to ensure they are not subject to removal under existing zoning restrictions.

Residents pointed out that neighboring cities, including Lake Worth Beach and Delray Beach, already have similar exemptions in place. Commissioners appeared open to the idea, with Commissioner Turkin recommending further research and discussion.

Supporters emphasized the vital role these community resources play. They provide food for people in need, especially during these difficult times, and free books for children and adults to encourage literacy. CHARITY Boca’s Go Pink Raises Millions

More than 1,100 supporters raised more than $2.6 million at Boca’s 21st annual mega fundraiser, the Go Pink luncheon.

Emcee Mark Larkin, president of Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation, announced the sum at the event’s finale after a Call to the Heart that started at $100,000, and a live auction with jewelry, trips and a yacht excursion conducted by Whitney Dutton.

This is a lively fundraiser where supporters turn the serious subject of breast cancer into a reason to celebrate survivorship. A reception in the lobby even gave out corsages and had makeup artists on hand for survivors.

At the luncheon in The Boca Raton’s ballroom, oncologist Dr. Louise Morrell introduced eight cancer survivors from ages 27 to nearly 90 to share brief survival stories to applause.

Record 2025 Rotary Mayors Ball

By Marci Shatzman With $525,000 raised and 530 attending the gala, Rotary Club Downtown Boca Raton Fund’s 2025 Mayors Ball set new records for the 10th annual fundraiser.

Once net proceeds are determined, they’ll go to the club’s Service Above Self grants annually awarded to 20 nonprofits in the spring, said Mayors Ball producer Bob Tucker, who announced the 2025 record breakers.

“The Boca Raton Mayors Ball enables the Rotary Club Downtown Boca Raton to help non-profit organizations that support our focus on health and wellness in our community,” said Rotary Club Downtown Boca Raton president Dr. Allen Konis. “We can safely say this was the most successful event in our club’s history. It will enable us to widen our support to help those in need. Our Fund Board meets in April to review the grant applications. The allocation of funds is determined by need, proximity to Boca Raton and focus on health and wellness. All non-profit organizations can contact us for an application starting in January.”

have filed to run for the five seats on city council. There are only three incumbents in the city’s non-partisan race. Two newcomers to politics, Mike Liebelson and Josh Joffe, are running for mayor against Deputy Mayor Fran Nachlas and Councilman Andy Thomson. Mayor Scott Singer is term limited and hasn’t announced his next move. Christen Ritchey, Michelle Grau and Korn again, have filed to run for Seat A. All the candidates who file to run for Boca Raton City Council have to qualify with the city clerk starting 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3 and by 5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 12.

Joe Majhess’ uncle Anthony Majhess ran and won as an anti-establishment candidate opposed to overdevelopment in 2009. He won re-election, but cut his term short to run for mayor in 2014 and was defeated by Mayor Susan Haynie.

For city of Boca Raton voters following the increasingly busy city council race, SaveBoca candidate Joe Majhess is out and Stacy Sipple is in for Seat D in the March 10, 2026 Municipal Election.

Majhess said he withdrew for business reasons, but will stay very active in SaveBoca, the organized opposition to the city’s interim private partner’s designs for a new downtown government campus. “Due to a business contact it was not in my best interest to run,” Majhess said. “I feel I can better serve SaveBoca as a vocal proponent of responsible government.” SaveBoca founder Jon Pearlman, a candidate for Seat B, said Majhess will now “lead the campaign for the special election on Jan. 13.”

SaveBoca’s successful petition drive led to two ballot questions: to prevent the sale of public land and add that provision to the city charter. The vote was legally moved up to be part of the special election in another district to replace former state representive Mike Caruso, the newly appointed Palm Beach Clerk of the Circuit Court & Comptroller.

Stacy Sipple, a fourth-generation Boca Ratonian, was literally waiting in the wings when she was asked to replace Majhess. She let Pearlman know she would run next time there was a vacancy on city council seat and was happy to step in now. She’s not currently working and will have to the time to devote to a campaign and to city council, she said. “I want a council that’s more transparent and residents to have a stronger voice and a vote, and our public lands to be used for the public good.” See her full bio below.
