Wally Power 118

Gianni Agnelli, the majority shareholder of FIAT, demanded aggression as an end in itself for his Stealth yacht, where every element, including its name, created an air of menace. It was the first totally black boat - even its sails were black - although it was never intended for racing. The challenge it threw down was taken up by Luca Bassani Antivari and Luca Brenta, the owner and designer duo whose Wally Yacht brand has revolutionised yacht design. Their yachts were fast - they even looked fast when moored - easy to manage and innovative. Beautiful but aggressive. Agnelli decided he wanted one that was just as pretty and just as aggressive, but by another hand, that of designer German Frers. Wally, which in the meantime had dropped the “Yachts” from its name, decided to make a splash in the motoryacht world, too, presenting something that from a design point of view was as explosive as their most successful sail yachts - Wallygator (now Nariida II), Genie of the Lamp, Wally B, the Wally Hundreds, the more recent Esense. The result was the Wally Power 118, a 36-metre black wedge, totally unconventional with three gas turbines generating the 5,600 hp needed to power it to 60 knots, a speed at which it consumes three thousand litres of fuel an hour!
