President’s Message
ANDREW MELDAHL 2024 BMHBA PRESIDENT
March is here and it feels like we are rolling right through winter with these unseasonably warm temperatures. Hopefully the favorable weather has made it easy on your crews working outdoors and this gets you all a jump start to an early spring start!
The 47th Annual Home show will be kicking off Friday the 15th 3:00pm-8:00pm and Saturday the 16th 9:00am-5:00pm at the Bismarck Event Center. We have another great turnout of registered exhibits in the Home Show. There will be plenty of exhibits to see, a bar and social space for everyone to use, 10K prize giveaway and our BMHBA’s local council: PWB (Professional Women in Building) will be helping host various activities for all children at the “Kids Korner”. So, make sure to mark it down in your calendars to come out and support your local businesses. Thank you in advance to all of those who are participating!
Interest rates are currently holding steady with a pause in any changes in rates for the time being. Within the Bismarck-Mandan area, we are currently at 263 active homes for sale (single family and twin homes). 185 of those are single family listings. 104 current homes available that are listed for over $400k and an additional 184 homes were also listed as “pending”. So, activity the market has been picking up. To put this into comparison: Pre covid in 2019, we saw an average of 300-400 active listings, so we are still relatively low in inventory based off past years data.
The BMHBA is still focused on serving and increasing our membership. We are an association that is here for our members and our community. So, make sure to use BMHBA anyway possible that would benefit you and your organization. We are here to help everyone strive together to a successful path in this industry. If you know of someone who would be interested in becoming a member of the BMHBA and what it has to offer, we would be happy to have them join! Save the Date!!

Congratulations to our Bis-Man PWB!!
Congratulations to our Bis-Man Professional Women in Building for being recognized as the NAHB Professional Women in Building Council of the year in the medium category at The International Builders Show in Las Vegas!! The council's tireless efforts in volunteering in our community, advocating for the next generation of building professionals and supporting women in the building industry are a testament to their commitment to progress.
We are PWB proud!!
Congrats to Wahpeton—ND State College of Science who placed third in their category at the NAHB Student Chapter competitions last week at IBS! NDSCS had two teams competing in the Associate program category and NDSU had one team compete in the Four Year Custom/Small Home program. This year, over 700 students across the nation were registered to compete. Another great way to get North Dakota on the map!
BMHBA PWB
PWB hosted 50 remarkable women who showed up for our 1st speaker event featuring Jane Meagher, President of Success Strategies, who spoke about -Designing the Life You Want to Live: Strategies for Personal and Professional Success.
The lunch and learn event offered attendees the opportunity to visit, share a meal together and gain some insightful tips. Thank you to all who attended the event and helped make it a success!
City and
Bismarck Participates in the Community Rating System Program
Class 7 CRS Rating Provides for a 15% discount on flood insurance premiums for Bismarck and ETA resident homeowners and business owners
Floods are among the costliest disasters within the United States, and North Dakota is no stranger to flooding events. The City of Bismarck experienced an ice jam locally in 2009 as well as a significant flood fight in 2011. During the flood of 2011, the Missouri River exceeded the defined flood stage of 16 feet from the beginning of June through mid-August before dropping below the flood stage of 16 feet. Due to properties impacted (in Burleigh County) at elevations lower than 16 feet, the flood stage was subsequently updated to 14.5 feet. South Washington Street was closed to traffic to allow for pumping at the flood gate structure (drainage ditch area near Solheim Elementary) from May 25 through July 1 of that year. A different method of pumping allowed for traffic to resume on Washington Street after July 1. However, pumping operations at that location continued until September 27, 2011.
In addition to the flood threat based on the high river level (Missouri River at Bismarck peaked at 19.25 feet during that event) there was also a flood threat based on high water table levels and heavy rain events including one on June 12 (.86 inch of rain in one hour) and on July 30 with rain amounts totaling around 2 inches. Sandbag dikes built as a secondary protective measure around personal property (intended for river flood protection) created another flood risk - by holding these heavy rains INSIDE the dike – not allowing for normal drainage away from the property.
What is the Community Rating System?
The Community Rating System (CRS) is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management practices that exceed the minimum requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Over 1,500 communities participate nationwide, including 12 communities from ND. Some of the other communities participating in the CRS program include Dickinson, Fargo, Grand Forks, Valley City and Minot.
In CRS communities, flood insurance premium rates are discounted to reflect the reduced flood risk resulting from the community’s efforts that address the three goals of the program:
1. Reduce and avoid flood damage to insurable property
2. Strengthen and support the insurance aspects of the NFIP
Foster comprehensive floodplain management
Protect Your Property – and inform your neighbors, friends and clients: Flood Insurance is one way to mitigate the flood threat.
Standard homeowners and commercial property insurance policies do not cover flood losses. To meet the need for this vital coverage, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) administers the NFIP.
According to FloodSmart.Gov, 99% of counties in the US have been affected by flooding since 1996 and over 40% of flood insurance claims from 2014 through 2018 were filed by policy holders outside the high-risk flood areas. More information about this is available at https://www.floodsmart.gov/why-buy-flood-insurance.
Residents and business owners in the City of Bismarck and Extraterritorial Zone (ETA) may take advantage of a reduction in flood insurance premiums because of the City’s active participation in the NFIP CRS. Property owners who hold flood insurance policies are encouraged to review the policy with their insurance agent to take advantage of any qualifying discounts. The applicable NFIP Community ID (CID) for Bismarck and residents within the ETA is 380149.
For more information about the CRS and flood preparedness, you can visit Bismarck’s website at https://www.bismarcknd.gov/2178/Community-Rating-System

This is a free event and is a great way to network with other members in the Association. We look forward to seeing you again next year!!
My name is Blanca De La Cruz, I was born and raised in a small town in Durango, Mexico. When I was 13 years old my father brought us to the United States to live and to go to school. I have been living in North Dakota for 16 years. I currently live in Wilton, ND with my husband Jaime Hernandez, our two sons Gabino (15), Ezequiel (12) and our daughter Martha (9). I have been in the cleaning business since 2011.
What is an interesting fact about your business that most people don’t know? I started cleaning residential houses but have found a passion for cleaning post construction homes. That is why I founded Magic Glove Cleaning two years ago. Do you have any advice for someone just entering this industry? Your work is your best letter of recommendation, your word is the most valuable resource to be able to harvest the most precious and valued virtue in these times: TRUST. If you do a great job with a new client, they will be more likely to recommend you to other people. Make the best effort to meet your client’s expectations do not just clean because you are going to get paid; clean because you really want to make your clients happy.
What is a typical day like for you? My workdays are different every day. I drive to Bismarck early in the morning to meet-up with my crew, we head over to a job site sometimes we divide into two groups depending on the number of houses we have in a day. I put on my magic gloves too and clean with them to make sure the work is done properly. Sometimes I go and meet with contractors/clients to give estimates or to walk the next job to see what needs to be done or do touch ups.
If I weren’t in the cleaning Business, I’d be … A full time Certified Federal Spanish Interpreter. This was my goal before becoming a business owner. I do still work as a freelance interpreter for the Court System but not full time.
What do you hope to see Magic Gloves Cleaning accomplish in the coming years? I want to expand my business to other Builders in the area, to meet their standards and be known for being the best out in the field. I want Magic Glove to be one of the best top cleaning businesses in the area.
What inspired you to enter this industry? My mom was the inspiration for me to start this business. She loves to clean and would go above and beyond for her clients. I started to help her, and I saw that we were pretty good at it as well. I took advantage of our skills. I always wondered who cleaned all the amazing homes in Bismarck/Mandan then I made the decision to start this cleaning business. What makes your business unique from other cleaning services in the area? What makes Magic Glove unique from others is that we put a lot of emphasis on what we do. I listen to what the homeowner needs and wants, my team knows what is to be done and we do not hesitate to do our job to the 110%. We do not back down if I tell you we will be there a certain day, you can count on that. My priority is to clean to the high standards of how the Bismarck/Mandan Home Builders are accustomed to. They build the houses and strive to make the homeowners happy and as do I! What is your favorite part of your job? My favorite part is to see the finished product when we finish cleaning a house whether is a deep clean on a residential or new construction home. I love to see and hear the satisfaction of our clients. It gives me so much motivation to keep doing what I am doing.
What is your favorite quote that speaks to you the most? Never start a business just to "Make money." Start a business to make a difference. -Marie Forleo
What do you like to do in your spare time? I like to go to the movie theater with my family. We to travel to Mexico as much as I can to see my family. When I am by myself, I like to clean my own house; I spend so much time cleaning other houses that it would be outrageous not to clean my own! I concentrate better when my family is gone, I start cleaning as if someone was paying me for it!
