June’s edition of Building Buzz means our construction season is under way and in full swing! We have seen an uptick for building permits issued and are seeing lots of busy activity.
The BMHBA recently held our spring mixer last month at the Luft in downtown Bismarck and we had a great turnout. Thank you to all of those who attended and once again a huge thank you to our sponsors and those who helped put on this fun event.
A couple events to mark down on your calendars, June 18th the BMHBA will be hosting our “Backyard picnic” at the local BMHBA office for all local builders, contractors, subcontractors, and our newest members to the Association. Builders, please invite all your local subcontractors and join us on Wednesday June 18th from 11am-1pm for lunch. Next, we will have our 38th annual BMHBA PAC Golf Tournament on Tuesday July 8th. Make sure to register your team this month and join us for a great event at Prairie West golf course in Mandan.
As I always conclude, let us keep striving to continue our growth in membership recruitment and support. Our association does many wonderful things for our building industry. Let’s continue to grow and support one another! Have a wonderful spring and see you back in July!
Join the BMHBA in congratulating these longstanding members. Their dedication to the Bismarck-Mandan Home Builders Association is appreciated and truly valued.
The BMHBA consists of building specialists from every section of the construction field and associate industries. Your membership strengthens our voice in the Bismarck-Mandan construction sector as well as at a state and national level. If you haven’t already submitted payment, please renew your membership by month end.

How It Started:
I often hear, “I love the name of your business!” but funny enough, I didn’t come up with it. Before starting Iron & Oak, I was working for someone else, and I was building river tables on the side. A close friend encouraged me to start selling them and said I needed a name. I didn’t take it seriously at first owning a business felt like a long shot. But next thing I knew, she had created the name and logo for me. Now, I proudly carry that name and everything it represents. What felt like a far-off dream quickly became a reality, and now I couldn’t be prouder to call it mine.
A Day in the Life:
Mornings start with coffee, emails, and a quick glance at the stock market stressful, but part of the routine. I manage three in-house crews, plus subcontractors on other jobs, which means juggling daily challenges and about 50 phone calls. After work, I head to Los Campeones, the gym I also own. If I’m not there, I’m probably on the golf course my favorite ways to decompress.
Why Construction?
Construction has always made sense to me. I didn’t take the traditional path through school, but I found success in this industry through hands-on experience and a strong work ethic. Honestly, I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. Construction is all I’ve ever known, and I love it, especially turning a client’s vision into reality. Sure, the process can be stressful, but seeing the transformation and their gratitude at the end makes it all worth it. That’s what drives me more than anything money can offer.
Looking Ahead:
I’m driven by growth personally and professionally. I don’t believe in settling, and my goal is to build a lasting legacy that my 5 kids can be proud of. Iron & Oak means a lot to me, and I plan to keep pushing it forward for years to come.
What Sets Us Apart:
Everyone has a story, and mine is part of what makes this business special. I’ve overcome challenges and built something from the ground up. I don’t claim to have a better story than anyone else but I’m proud of how far I’ve come.
Favorite Part of the Job:
Hands down, it’s the clients. I love sitting down creating their vision and ultimately creating a friendship. I enjoy getting to know them, designing with them, and often building real friendships. It’s crazy how many of my clients still stay in touch, which says a lot.
Words to Build By:
"Making visions come true that is what we do."
It started as a catchy tagline for our trailers, but it truly reflects what we’re all about.

We kicked off the season in style with our 2025 Spring Mixer on May 13th at The LÜFT in Bismarck. It was a perfect evening to enjoy the fresh air and finally say goodbye to another long North Dakota winter. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for the fun! We were honored to welcome special guests including North Dakota Builders Association State President Bob Hoard of Williston, along with Minot Association of Builders Board Members Joe Stenvold and President Scott Lee. We’re already looking ahead to next year expect it to be even bigger and better. You won’t want to miss it!
THANK YOU to our Spring Mixer Sponsors!!
The Bismarck-Mandan Professional Women in Building had a great time attending the BMHBA Spring Mixer May 13th at the LÜFT!
This event wasn’t just a great networking opportunity ~ it was also a chance to support the NDABPAC, which plays a critical role in advocating for the building industry. Whether it’s fighting for affordable housing, protecting small businesses, or pushing back against burdensome regulations, PAC support helps amplify our voice at the local, state, and national levels. Want to learn more or donate to the PAC? Visit https://www.bmhba.com/advocacy
Homeownership is the foundation of the American Dream! The North Dakota Association of Builders and the home building industry celebrate this by recognizing June as National Homeownership Month. Headlines across the country are highlighting the challenge of housing affordability. According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) estimates, 70% (94 million) of U.S. households cannot afford a $400,000 home. The estimated median-priced new home is $460,000 in 2025. In response, members of the residential construction industry continue to advocate for housing policies that will improve affordability in our state.
The homeownership rate declined to 65.1% in the first quarter of 2025, the lowest level since the first quarter of 2020, according to the Census’s Housing Vacancy Survey (HVS). Compared to the peak of 69.2% in 2004, the homeownership rate is 4.1 percentage points lower and remains below the 25-year average rate of 66.3%. There is no single solution to addressing the housing shortfall and making homes more affordable. A complex equation involving labor and materials prices; interest rates and financing costs; federal, state, and local regulations; density and growth restrictions; and supply and demand are among many factors that determine housing costs.
Despite the competitive pay, the residential construction industry continues to experience labor shortages, which leads to higher home building costs and construction delays. Alleviating regulatory burdens and making sustained investments in workforce development are a snapshot of several issues our association and NAHB are advocating to make the dream of homeownership a reality!
Registration is now live for our BUILD-PAC Summer Social! Head to our website www.ndbuild.com/events to register.
