President’s Message

Greetings fellow members, and welcome to February’s Builder Buzz. Optimism within the building industry appears to be strong with many busy bidding projects, impatiently waiting for spring to arrive. Our inventory continues to remain lower than average, and the current interest rate outlook still seems to be undetermined. With a new year and a change in administration, it will be interesting to see how the economy reacts. For the most part, it seems very positive!

January’s events included the 66th annual HBA banquet at the Radisson Hotel. We had a great evening with a wonderful turnout to support our HBA and to also welcome current and new board members Logan Hauff from Plain View and Design and Jamie Schmidt from Investcore. Thank you to all of those who had a hand in making that event what it was. Thank you to our generous sponsors in contributing to the event. We cannot appreciate you enough!

The Home Show is approaching rapidly, and we are getting close to filling out most of the booths. There are still a few available spots left, so contact the HBA soon if you would like to be a part of this event. Dates for this year’s 48th annual Home Show will be March 28-29 2025 at the Bismarck Event Center. If you are considering IBS in Las Vegas, those dates are approaching fast, and hotels are filling up. Make sure to make your reservations soon to attend the show!

As we look forward to the near future, we will soon be gearing up for the Spring Parade of Homes April 24_ 27. Keep working hard to get those homes ready! We will see you right back here next month!

Join the BMHBA in congratulating these longstanding members. Their dedication to the Bismarck-Mandan Home Builders Association is appreciated and truly valued.

ANDREW MELDAHL 2025 BMHBA PRESIDENT

Public Notification Signs

The City of Bismarck Community Development Department has made recent changes to better engage members of the public:

• Switching from letter format to post cards for adjacent property owner notifications

Creation of a new or expanding business webpages to provide guidance for businesses with development processes - https://www.bismarcknd.gov/2345/Starting-Growing-or-Relocating-Your-Busi

• Redesigned Planning webpages to create a more user-friendly experiencehttps://www.bismarcknd.gov/138/Planning

• Creation of an Open Development Projects website - https://bismarcknd.gov/2384/Open-Development-Projects

• Spring and Fall contractor engagement meetings coordinated in partnership Bismarck-Mandan Homebuilders Association, Burleigh County, Mandan, Morton County, and the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC

Additionally, to enhance awareness of development activities and to better inform the members of the public, a sign posting process has been proposed as part of the public notification process. Often, members of the public express concerns that they have not been effectively notified of public hearing opportunities. Sign posting of proposed developments, is a rather low technology option but has proven effective and is common practice in other communities around the country.

At the January 28, 2025, Bismarck City Commission meeting direction was provided to staff to pursue a one-year pilot project for posting public notification signs. An exact starting date has not yet been identified as signs will need to be procured and procedures developed for placement. It is anticipated that a media release will be issued notifying the public of more specifics of the public notification sign posting once the process is ready to be implemented on a trial basis.

Proximal50

Keaton Gruber & Tana Trotter

Keaton: I’m originally from Alexandria, MN where I grew up spending my time on the lake and playing sports. I moved to Bismarck in 2021 to attend the University of Mary and have stuck around since. After completing an internship at Proximal50, I joined the team as a personal trainer. I now work full time selling and servicing exercise equipment.

Tana: I grew up in Killdeer where I fell in love with exercise through sports, and entrepreneurship through watching my dad grow his business. These two passions brought me to Bismarck. I attended the University of Mary where I earned my Bachelor’s in Exercise Science and my Doctorate in Physical Therapy. As I completed my clinicals for physical therapy, I saw the potential to combine physical therapy and fitness to use exercise as medicine. Add in my love for entrepreneurship and you have the birth of Proximal50!

What is an interesting fact about your business that most people don’t know? Proximal50 is a small business founded by Tana Trotter in 2015. We have two gym locations in Bismarck, each offering unique facility styles. We have continued to excel and find passion in serving the health needs of our community and the rural communities that surround the area. This includes our physical therapy clinic, personal training, counseling, and our exciting athletics facility addition, expected to be operating by spring.

Proximal50 is a multifaceted operation that includes an entire exercise equipment sales division. We specialize in home gyms, and also cater to commercial projects such as schools, hotels, and businesses. Our exercise equipment staff is well versed in all styles, brands, and servicing aspects of gym equipment.

What is a typical day like for you? Keaton: A majority of my time is spent working with customers at our Divide location showroom, helping them to find equipment that best fits their needs. Each day also includes time spent communicating with customers and researching equipment. When I’m not in the office you’ll find me delivering equipment, working on machine maintenance, and helping wherever it is needed around our gym.

Tana: A majority of my time is spent with patients doing physical therapy in the clinic and gym, however, I will still teach fitness classes and hold team meetings to continue the growth of the business.

What do you hope to see Promimal50 to accomplish in the coming years? With the opening of our new athletics location, we are excited to welcome in a new wave of athletes, while also encouraging a different focus in injury prevention and overall balance of the intense athletics world. We will continue to work with all ages and groups to incorporate lifelong changes in their health and wellness.

We hope to continue to grow our exercise equipment division and develop relationships with local businesses in the area, providing services for our customers across the state.

What makes your business unique from other Fitness Centers?

Proximal50 is a woman-founded and -owned small business that is dedicated to helping each individual client reach their highest potential. We value personal connection, relationships and striving for true health.

Our equipment sales division is well-versed in-home gyms, offering expertise in specific equipment. We give customers peace of mind to know they are working with knowledgeable and caring professionals. The relationship with our customers doesn’t end after we deliver your equipment. We want to keep the equipment functioning optimally and support you in reaching your goals.
