What are your predictions for the real estate market in 2023?

My predictions for the real estate market in 2023 will be that of a return to a seasonal market here in Costa Rica, thus resulting in fair market values and great opportunities for Buyers. However, with the ongoing lack of inventory in the area, I do think that well priced properties will continue to have a short marketing time frame.





What is the 1 thing that you think all new residents should experience in this area?
I think that new residents to the Costa Ballena should experience the beauty of the waterfalls in the area. To name a few, Nauyaca, Eco Chontales and El Pavon are some of the most magical places in the area.



What is your biggest success story to date?
My biggest success occurred in 2022 after past clients from 2014 returned and purchased an amazing private ocean view estate property valued at $3,100,000, my largest sale to date!

What do you enjoy the most about living in Costa Rica?
For me, the jungle is magical. As a child I dreamed of living in a place like this. I spent my time catching snakes, lizards, and bugs. My dreams included destinations like the Amazon, the Congo, and Kenya, to mention a few. As I became an adult I came to the realization that these places had drawbacks. Great for vacation but??? Costa Rica is a very unique place on planet earth. Whether it’s being able to watch 4 species of monkeys from your balcony or counting how many Blue Morpho butterflies I see while driving my son to school. Every day, in itself, is amazing. There is a huge amount of wildlife from Tapirs to Sloths. I’ve seen animals here I never knew existed and more than can be individually mentioned in a short article The jungles here are lush, healthy, and grand. The amazing Cieba tree grows here. It is called the tree of life and what inspired the movie Avatar. These trees are massive and once you have a chance to stand under one you will see why they are called the tree of life. Costa Rica is considered to be one of the most bio-diverse places on earth, on land, in rivers, and in the sea. Because of the mountains it has above the tree line, this small country quickly moves the rains to the ocean with countless waterfalls at every turn. As a result, mosquitoes are seldom seen in our area unless you are in a flat pasture.
Costa Rica does, however, have an abundance of exotic yet harmless insects. The Rhinoceros beetles visit every year and I’m always excited to see them. Again harmless. Many are also undiscovered and the different types available are staggering. Leave the porch light on and check it out in the morning. You will not be disappointed. As well, Costa Rican people bring out the best in everyone around them. The laid back attitude and demeanor of the small communities is so relaxed and pleasant that it is a welcome reprieve from the fast-paced life of the concrete jungle and people just start to relax and rejuvenate. These are the reasons why so many people come here on vacation in Costa Rica and never leave. It really is a paradise wonderland.
What should newcomers expect in their first 12 months living here?
For newcomers, brace yourself for some change. Leave the hustle and bustle behind you. This is Pura Vida. Enjoy relaxing days. Know that the part you ordered will be late with a smile. Know that you have to watch out for sloth crossings and you will have to stop your vehicle, put on your hazard signal, and help him across the road. Know that a tree may block the road or you may not find your favorite condiment at the store. Things move slower here. It’s also the reason people move here and cut the cord.

What has become your favorite local food?
I can’t list a favorite however some do stand out at the moment. I discovered mangosteen here at the farmers markets and we are growing some now on our land. It’s very healthy and extracted for vitamins and sold however it grows here and is delicious. Another fruit I love is passion fruit which is a little more tart and great in a smoothie or on it’s own. Lastly the dorado, also know as mahi mahi is abundant here and of course fresh. I could list more and more but I’ll stop there. .

What was the highlight of your real estate career in 2022?


2022 has been an amazing year for me, being new to real estate in Costa Rica I had an exceptional start and came out of the gate strong with a few really quick deals. What are your predictions for the real estate market in 2023?


The market in Costa Rica has adjusted as it has throughout North America but the draw here and particularly the southern region is palpable. For some it’s the beach life or the peace and tranquility of the jungle, for others its strictly investment potential. For me it was the step back in time that I craved for some time, where the clerks at the shops still take time to chat, your gas is pumped for you, you line up at the bank, the farmers markets and the general beauty of the southern region, Whether you’re buying turnkey or a build lot, inventory remains tight so if Costa Rica is in your sights for the future don’t hesitate.
What is your favorite restaurant along the Costa Ballena?



The southern region is well known for having an abundance of great restaurants to choose from (Foodie Capitol of the South). Fine dining, family casual, sushi to its many sodas along the way. As a favourite I’d have to give this one to Fusion, or Heliconia, both a stone’s throw from each other. Fusion has a great variety of menu items, and none will disappoint, was never a sushi fan in the past but they have made me a convert. Heliconia is fine casual without the “fine dining” prices and quality can compete with the best of them.

What does your typical “off day” look like, when you are not with clients?
A typical day off for me is either spent at OSA Golf Course, an amazing 9 hole located just 8 kms south of Ojochal in San Buenas. It’s a long 9 playing 3653 yards and is only course south of Jaco so very lucky to have this in our area. Also, a favorite down time activity if checking out the Farmers Market in Uvita, organic farm fresh produce is king here. Or I might be one of those days for just chilling with friends for a beach walk or waterfall hike.

Los Laureles Restaurant in Uvita has amazing fish tacos and Cindy’s chef’s secret ingredient is so subtle but delivers.
Why did you choose to get into Real Estate?
Since the very early days of my work life, I’ve always loved working with people, I can’t imagine a life without connecting with your fellow human daily. Life would just be so much less than. You really learn a lot from your clients and all the diverse backgrounds the bring and you almost always connect on some level. We all have dreams and aspirations and it’s such a thrill when you can help your clients realize a dream. Being a Realtor in Costa Rica gives me the opportunity to do just that…make dreams come true.

Why did you choose to get into Real Estate?

What does your typical “off day” look like, when you are not with clients?
When not with clients you will find me golfing, painting, reading or entertaining. And if I’m not doing that swimming of course is a year round activity.

I think the whale watching/snorkeling tours are a tour that new residents should experience in the area. Humpback whale season in Costa Rica is December to April and July to November. The most common whales you will see are the humpback whales as they pass by our coast for more than 6 months of the year. In fact, Costa Rica has the longest humpback whale watching season in the world thanks to both the Northern and Southern hemisphere whales passing by. I find spending a day on (and in) the beautiful blue ocean to be a very enjoyable experience!
What is your favorite restaurant along the Costa Ballena?
Our area is known for so many fantastic restaurants so picking a favorite one is a bit tricky. We have a large mix of locals and expats in the area that have brought us delicious cuisines from all over the world. I am from Phoenix Arizona and I really missed Mexican food when I first moved here over 11 years ago. We now have a few Mexican restaurants to choose from in the area along with many other international options.. My favorite restaurant is a Mexican restaurant called Choza de Alejo. It has delicious food and the staff and service are fantastic.

What makes the market in Costa Rica, and particularly in the Costa Ballena region unique? The market in this region is unique because we are slowly growing but in a good way. The main highway was only put in approximately 15 years ago. In the past this was a fairly remote location to get to. You had to take a really rough, bumpy road if you wanted to come this far South. This area was very far off the beaten path.
