WHAT DO THE LOCALS DO?

Lets talk about what the Locals do here in the Costa Ballena region. Our community is mainly composed of 3 small towns that all blend together to be one large spread out community. From the charming surfing town of Dominical, to the Central hub of Uvita and down south to the beautiful little village of Ojochal which is known as the culinary capital of Costa Rica. We are lucky to have so many fantastic guided tours available including rafting, snorkeling, ATV tours, zip lining, catamaran tours, waterfall hikes, whale watching, deep sea fishing… the list goes on and on! I want to focus on what those of us living locally in this area do for fun. Once you move to the wonderous Coast Ballena region, there are many things besides the guided tours that you can experience while spending your days living in paradise. There are so many options and I won’t be able to list them all so I am highlighting just a few things you can get involved in and enjoy during your free time along the South Pacific Coast.
For the outdoor enthusiast: Enjoy a beautiful day at the beach or have a bonfire and watch the sun set over the warm blue Pacific Ocean. Surfing and boogieboarding are favorite past times for many of the locals. You can Kayak, SUP, fish or just enjoy the cool swimming holes at one of the hundreds of gorgeous rivers and hidden waterfalls in this area. Go for a hike in the lush rainforest or just walk through your own property and experience the breathtaking variety of plants, flowers, birds, butterflies and wildlife. Spend a day riding ATVs or side by sides with friends in the rainforest covered mountains visiting the small towns and amazing scenery along the way.

For the sports enthusiast: Join a soccer (football) team which is the number one sport here in Costa Ria. Hit the course at the beautiful 9-hole golf course located San Buenas which is surrounded by the rainforest just south of Ojochal. There is also a new mini- golf course in the town of Uvita for those who are just looking for fun entertainment.
Other popular sports that you can enjoy locally are bocce ball, pickle ball, basketball, and even tennis. On Sundays you can head down to Playa Tortuga near Ojochal where many locals and expats meet for a fun filled day of beach volleyball.
For those who want to get involved: We have a lot of wonderful things you can do to support the community. Join the local theater group. Go to one of the many amazing restaurants in the area and enjoy live music and delicious food. Volunteer at one of our local animal shelters, the wildlife sanctuary or the Sea turtle Sanctuary. Join the beach clean up groups that help keep our amazing beaches beautiful.
For the hobbyist: You can take a painting class or learn to make jewelry. Yoga and dance classes are very popular here as well. There are even local musician’s group that gets together for weekly jam sessions. Visit the weekly market for fresh produce and hand made goods.
We have such a diverse community which is very friendly and welcoming. It is very easy to make friends in this area. There is never a shortage of things to do if you want to keep busy or have an adventure. Your time spent living in this beautiful country will bring you the joy and camaraderie of a fun-loving ex-pat community.
