As the leaves change color and temperatures drop, golf courses around our region prepare for the winter months. While it might be disappointing, eventually closing the golf course, for the membership, getting the course ready for winter is crucial for the longterm health of the greens and the overall sustainability of the facility. I want to give a closer look at why this prep for closure is necessary.

1. Protecting Turf Health

One of the primary reasons for closing a golf course in winter is to protect the health of the turf The primary turf at Champions Run is Bentgrass We have Bentgrass on tees, greens and fairways This turf type can be sensitive to extreme cold and frost It can also take almost 3x-4x time to recover than it would during the growing season We do our best to minimize traffic that could damage the delicate turf and allow the grass to rest and recover This even goes for our maintenance practices Our team reduces mowing and raises the height of cut to protect the turf from wear and tear

2. Maintenance and Preparation

Fall and Winter provides an ideal opportunity for maintenance that can be challenging during the busy playing season Our agronomy team can focus on essential tasks like topdressing, overseeding and very necessary tree work These activities enhance soil health and promote vigorous growth come spring Additionally, machinery and equipment can be serviced or repaired without the pressure of an active course, ensuring everything is in top condition for the next season

3. Environmental Considerations

Seasonal closures also have environmental benefits. Resting the course allows for the natural ecosystem to thrive. Putting the golf course “to bed” is a very crucial process that gives the turf time to store necessary nutrients and to prep itself for a couple of cold months ahead. There always seems to be 1-2 weeks in a Nebraska winter that are just down right nasty. If the turf is put into a good position prior to this, we allow it a greater chance to survive or even thrive come spring.

4. Enhancing the Overall Experience

Finally, a well-managed winter closure and prep sets the stage for a rejuvenated course come spring. A healthy, well-maintained golf course provides a better experience for the membership, enhancing the club’s reputation and member satisfaction. When members return in the spring, the turf will be hopefully not damaged by winter kill and ready for a great long season ahead.

Conclusion

As we embrace the winter months and the prep that comes in advance, it's crucial to recognize the importance of this seasonal downtime, paving the way for a vibrant golfing experience in the warmer months ahead Thank you for making Champions Run great!
