Words from the Editor-in-cheif of Bladet Hi all biology students!

When you read this it will either be right before summer break or after. It is always hard to predict both when the students read as well as when the printing house will be done and deliver the paper. Either way I wish you the absolut best summer, no matter if it will be spent in Uppsala or somewhere else in Sweden.

I myself can’t quit grasp the fact that it is already May. How? The hagberries are already blooming and soon the lilac will to and that means that my mission as Editorin-cheif is halfway done. It also means that there soon will be time for new students to fill the halls of EBC and sadly the time for some older students to say goodbye.

It has been a fun ride so far, including lots of recipes and cookies on my part. The paper has also seen the best of course evaluations, books, horoscopes, cute pets, exchange studies and much more. To say that I am proud of my editorial staff would be a understatment. One thing is for sure and that is that none of this paper would be possible without all the great and engaging people helping with everything from illustrations to articles to statistics. The same goes for all of you that reads the paper.

Bladet would not be possible without you, thank you!

Words from the presidemt of BÄR Beloved students!

Spring is here and summer is approaching rapidly, valborg has passed and the wood anemone is finally not alone in the ditches. The term is almost over and with that comes the time to return home, to familiar streets and to the friends we vowed to meet at that special place like we were back in the good old days again, and Uppsala is once again returning to its slumber state. It is a beautiful thing, seeing the rhythm of an entire city change and changing with it, from a year with the stress a life with university studies brings and to sit back with the change.

I am finishing up my first year here in Uppsala, and what a year it has been. From the first day, meeting all of you lovely students, getting to know you, having my first taste of Uppsala. Visiting Klubban for the first time, getting a real taste of one of a biologist’s possible futures. Being trusted with the legacy and responsibility of BÄR, meeting the board, planning and arranging things, amongst others hosting BÄR-meetings and now planning for the fall. Sitting on a train back home to Linköping, reflecting on the year that has passed and it has been a year I, in a million years, could not have imagined. I can do nothing more than thanking you for the time that has passed, and I hope your year has been as wonderful as mine have been.

That I tend to write like I have no goal should come as no surprise, but I feel it might be time to approach the reason for me having my own spot in Bladet, as the president of BÄR. This first half of the year has been filled with a lot of different things. We have worked with about everything one could imagine. Besides doing what we always have done, monitoring the education and looking out for you, the students, we have also worked with updating the statues of BÄR as well as its policies, arranging chemistry and math workshops, planning the kandidatsittning, held multiple BÄR-meetings to name a few. BIF has amongst others taken up running, an easter egg hunt and “brännboll”, and Darwin has, besides the ”Onsdagsöl”, organized both pub crawls and “På spåret”. We, the board, have also worked hard to continue building our relationships with the rest of the sections of UTN, and who knows, the results of that might show in the fall.

I believe that the moral of my story is that none of this would have been possible without all of you, and that we deeply thank you for the time that has passed. To those of you who graduate this spring, we wish you all the best and it has been an honor to see you this last year, and you will do great things! May our paths cross in the future.

To the rest of you, I hope I see you back in the fall, ready for a new year in Uppsala, but if not, I wish you the best of luck.

Förutom att du får vara med om en spännande konferens är det en möjlighet att hålla ett föredrag i stor sal inför en större publik. Presentationen kan ske på engelska eller svenska, du väljer själv. Presentationerna filmas och efter konferensen har talarna en återkopplingssession. Bästa presentation vinner ett pris och du får ett intyg över din medverkan.

Dessutom får kandidatstudenter som presenterar poäng på kursen Yrkeslivsanknytning. Såklart kan du också vara med i publiken och heja på de biologstudenter som talar.

The presentation is in either English or Swedish, your choice. The presentations are filmed and you will receive feedback on your talk. The best presentation wins a prize and you will receive a certificate of participation. You can also just join the audience and listen to the talks.

Från Bio-dagarna till Utnarm – från stort till större Jag hade aldrig gjort ett studentengagemang innan, men det räckte med en handskakning och ett ”nu kör vi!”. När söket för Bio-dagarna 2023 öppnade sökte jag projektledare. Att bli kastad rakt in i något nytt var spännande, men också lite läskigt. Jag hade ju aldrig suttit i en kommitté innan, än mindre lett den. Med tiden kom jag in i det och det var fantastiskt roligt att engagera sig. När Bio-dagar-sittningen som satte punkt för Bio-dagarna 2023 var slut kändes det som att jag hade fått ett litet, litet hål i hjärtat. Allt ens hårda arbete var slut och man ville bara göra allt igen.

Fastforward till vintern 2024. Det där hålet i hjärtat hade läkt men suget för att engagera sig fanns fortfarande kvar. Så när jag fick höra av en kompis ”Jag och projektledaren för Utnarm har pratat om dig och att du hade passat bra i ledningsgruppen”. Lilla jag? Jamen då är det nog så, jag söker. En intervju senare, där jag på den ”snabba” frågan ”Vilken är din favoritpizza?” till slut lyckades svara ”Hamburgare”, är jag nu sammankallande för Utnarm 2024. I min roll som sammankallande är jag en del av ledningsgruppen och bland annat ansvarig för hållbarhet (både socialt och miljömässigt, jag vill varken förstöra miljön eller någon av alla som jobbar med Utnarm), gruppkoordinatorer (poster som ligger under kommittémedlemmarna), intern kommunikation, scheman och lokalbokningar. Även den här gången är det mycket som är nytt. Bara att försöka hitta till alla salar på Ångan är en stor utmaning för någon som aldrig i sitt liv har haft en föreläsning där. Hus 10 har jag i princip bara sett under tidigare års Utnarm. Men Mazemap är min vän och räddaren i nöden när jag behöver veta vad det är för klassrum jag egentligen håller på att boka. Och Uthgård som jag som biolog väldigt sällan besöker är nu på väg att bli lite av ett extra hem. Det är också väldigt roligt att få umgås med folk som inte bara pluggar samma sak som en själv, även om jag blir lite trött på att höra om ”smasken” ibland. Men då kan jag kontra med lite konstiga djurfakta eller vilka roliga bakterier jag har lekt med på labbet under dagen.

Eftersom Utnarm är lite större än Bio-dagarna så är det uppdelat på olika nivåer. Jag är en del av ledningsgruppen tillsammans med projektledaren och gruppledarna för mässgruppen, näringslivsgruppen och marknadsföringsgruppen. Att få vara en del av en ledningsgrupp är kul. Mycket arbete och mycket ansvar, men väldigt kul! Även om jag inte har någon egen grupp så är det roligt att få höra och se alla i kommitténs idéer och visioner. Det känns som att vi fortfarande är i ett tidigt planeringsskede, men trots det närmar sig oktober och november med stormsteg. Men det är också något att se fram emot, det ska bli så otroligt häftigt att få se hur allt det hårda arbetet vi gör ska gå ihop till ett. Såklart är även resan målet och inget slår att få skratta tillsammans på mötena emellan allt det seriösa och viktiga arbetet.

Att få göra Bio-dagarna 2023 med min fantastiska kommitté var stort. Att få känna att man gör skillnad för studenterna var stort. Och att få se sitt gamla engagemang leva vidare och bli ännu bättre i och med nästkommande kommittés arbete med Bio-dagarna 2024 är stort. Då är man glad för att få vara engagerad igen, med näringslivsanknytning i ännu större tappning. Jag hoppas att mitt engagemang i Utnarm får både gamla kommittéer och 2024:s kommitté inkluderat mig själv, att känna att det här var något stort, eller kanske till och med större än förväntat.

(Psstt! Glöm inte att söka Bio-dagarna nu när projektledaren och vice ska bli förtroendevalda på nästa stormöte. Och glöm inte att söka Utnarm! Under hösten kommer vi söka värdar (vår typ av volontärer). Och glöm inte heller att besöka Utnarms event!)

Summer, the time of sun, flowers, berries, vacation and everything nice. It is finally here! And what better way to celebrate the arrival of the summer then some sugary treats. Because no matter if you will work, chill on the beach or travel this summer, there will be a time where you will need or simply want some swedish fika. Maybe a dinner party, maybe a picnic or simply a little treat for yourself after work? Fika can’t solve everything, but it will help you on the way. Here is therefore 2 quick and easy summer recipies for every occation.

1. Blondie brownies with raspberry and white chocolate

Chocolate? = check. Raspberries = check. Wonderful caramel taste?= check. You hear, it has a little bit of everything needed for a tasty dessert. It is also very easy to make and give a minimal amount of dishes to do.

Can you ask for more? It is quickly done and are perfect to bring to a picnic or in the fridge at home when the sugar cravings kicks in.

Steps: Put the oven at 175 °C and melt the Ingredients: butter. Add sugar, brown sugar and 200 g butter vanilla sugar to the melted butter and 1 ½ dl sugar blend. Whip together the sugar mix1 dl brown sugar ture with egg and flour. Chop up the 3 dl flour white chocolate in rustic pieces and 2 tsp vanilla sugar add together with the raspberries to 1 egg the brownie batter, mix carfully. Pour 160 g raspberries the batter in a 30 x 20 cm and bake in 100 g white chcolate the middle of the oven for 25-30 min.

It should still be soft in the middle but a nice crust on top. Bon appetit!

2. Pistachio tosca buns

Tosca again? Yes! This is the best cinnamon buns I know. Nice and fluffy dough, buttery cinnamon filling and a delicious tosca of pistachios, almond flakes and some lemon zest. You get a huge bach, they are easy to freeze and store and tasty all summer. A must have for any outdoor adventure. They will never taste as good as when directly out of the oven though so don’t forget to try them while they are still warm.

Ingredients: Tosca: Steps: Buns: 100g butter Crumble the yeast in fingerwarm milk and 5 dl milk 1 dl sugar whisk untill disolved. Add the rest of the bun 50 g yeast 3 tbsp light syrap ingredients (not all flour) and work for 15 min 1 dl sugar 2 tbsp flour untill you get an elastic dough. Cover with plas1 tsp salt 2 tbsp milk tic foil and let rest for 30 min. Mix everything 3 tsp cardamom 75g almondflakes for the filling in another bowl. Gently take out 13 dl flour 1 -2 dl pistachios the dough and work on floured bench. Roll out 1 egg A pinch of salt the dough to a big rectangle and add the filling.

150 g butter Zest from half a lemon Take one of the long sides and fold over the other. Roll out gently so it gets even and then Filling: cut 2,5 cm wide pieces that you then twist into 200g roomtempesmall spin shape with the end placed undernered butter ath the bun. Push a little hole in the middle of 1 dl sugar the bun then leave under a baking towel for 60 1 tbsp vanilla sugar min. Put the oven at 225°C and cook the sugar 3 tbsp cinnamon syrup until sugar disolved and put on the side.

Some seasalt flakes Thereafter do the tosca by melting the butter and add sugar, light syrup, milk and flour. Let Syrup: boil then simmer for 5 min before adding the 1 dl sugar chopped pistachios, almonds, lemon and salt.

1 dl water Add on top of the buns and bake for 8 - 10 min.

Brush with sugar syrup. Done!

MY TRIP TO YUNNAN So you’re thinking about taking the Biodiversity course in Yunnan? Well, then you should read this first.

I am currently on the plane back from Beijing and as relieved as I feel about it, after almost four intense long weeks, I am equally as sad. I didn’t have that many expectations on the trip, as I had never been to China and most of what I knew came from what I had heard from the media and more recently, the classes, preparing us for the journey. I knew the culture was rich, the cities big and the country diverse. I heard the food was amazing and that the people were nice. But it is one thing to hear it and another to experience it.

Our journey began with the vacation part of it, a couple of days in Beijing of sightseeing, long walks and photos of many beautiful and historical sights. Still, my favourite part of that first week was the cosine. One of the things we agreed on throughout this course was: do not be afraid to try out the weird stuff.

Also be prepared for the amount of safety checks, identity controls and stares. Remember the 4 P’s: Passport: Keep your passport on you at all times. ALL TIMES. Plastic: Everything is wrapped in plastic at least three times. Where you would least expect it you will find it.

For a recycling maniac like me and many Swedes, prepare for a lot of single-use (or bring your own chopsticks).

Photos: Being a Westerner in China draws attention and if people are not asking you for a picture they are secretly, or not so secretly, taking pictures. A famous statement made by Fabian Lundell during the trip to the Great Wall was “We have been standing still so long we’ve become the attraction.”

Propaganda: China has a lot of it, sometimes subtle, other times not so much. You’ll notice it in many ways and the patriotism is very different from the Jante lag of Sweden.

After the warm-up of Beijing, we flew to Kunming and met with the Chinese students joining our project for the remaining weeks. They were a bit shy, and in the beginning, it felt more like they were working for us than with us, as they are used to a much more hierarchical school system than we are. But take time, be kind, learn a little Chinese and show them that their opinions matter and they will come out of their shells. It was a beautiful experience, and those friendships warm my heart. I will miss them.

Even closer friendships grew between us travelling all the way from Uppsala together (as you will barely have any alone time, especially as we share rooms. So, for god’s sake, do take some alone time when you need it).

It might be temporary, as things go back to normal fast when we’re back in Sweden (which is also why I write this with a heavy heart), but for more than 3 weeks I gained an additional family. Siblings, friends, and my wife Agnes whom I shared a room with for this whole trip.

Okay, enough with the soppiness. I should talk a bit about the excursions and nature of Yunnan after all. Rainforests are freaking awesome. They beat all expectations. End of story. It is not something I justifiably can describe. If you are lucky, with a practised eye, you will find jumping spiders, and once you know how to look, you will find them everywhere. And when you do, please give them some love from me. Those little wonders are everything I love about nature.

Frank, Ronny and Tobias put their hearts into this course, to make it the best for you.

I felt safe to turn to them if there were any uncertainties or problems. Everything was not smooth and perfect, this is China (TIC) after all and from what we learned, things change very rapidly here. How things worked before might not be how they work now.

I will give a fair warning, the trip is expensive, and more so than I was expecting when it all sums up. But it has given me more than I could have imagined. To better prepare you, I have collected thoughts and tips from me and the others that we want to pass on to the next group of adventurers.

My most important advice is: Let people come close. Friendship is, after all, the real treasure we found in the jungle of Yunnan. /Maiara Alves Dias Karlsson

Tips:

• Make sure you can squat. Squatting toilets are your friend.

• Also, always keep a toilet roll in your pocket.

• Practice eating with chopsticks or learn the hard way. We did not see a fork in three weeks.

• Out in town and need to pee? Ask the poshest hotels.

• Bring paracetamol, the meds in China contain caffeine.

• If you’re someone who can’t share food, get over it.

• Do not miss the night excursions.

• Do things even if you’re tired, or you will regret it.

• Ask scooter drivers for a lift through the botanical garden, it saved us a lot of walking.

• Learn how to count to 10, and whatever price they give you in the market, you can go lower.

• The karaoke rooms in XXX have no time limit and they include snacks and beers.

• Get a neckpillow, the flights are long but even longer are the bus trips through Yunnan.

• The rainforest is not trying to kill you.

• Lastly: double check this list and anything you think you know about China.

Things changes so fast.

Kosterhavets Nationalpark, DNA barcoding, Göteborgs Naturhistoriska Museum, nyckling av marina evertebrater och utbredningskartor i QGIS – om detta låter intressant är Marinbiologin ett mycket bra kursval för sista perioden under våren! Den här valbara kursen tar upp i princip alla aspekter av marinbiologi som forskningsområde; från oceanografi med djuphavsgravar och globala vindmönster som förbinder världshaven till klimatförändringar, kelpskogar, plankton och hur arktiska näringsvävar skiljer sig från antarktiska. Första och sista veckorna är på EBC med föreläsningar, seminarium och datalabbar som avslutas med en klassisk tenta.

Man gör också ett fördjupningsprojekt mot slutet av kursen. Efter den inledande teoridelen kommer det bästa med kursen; cirka tre fantastiska veckor i april/maj på Klubbans Biologiska Station i Fiskebäckskil!

Syftet med fältveckorna på Klubban är att få en känsla för den stora marina mångfald vi har, och att träna på artidentifiering vilket examineras med en praktisk tenta. Den mesta tiden spenderas genom att nyckla (precis som floristiken på floristik och faunistik-kursen) alla spännande arter man får upp tack vare Belone. Med Belone åker man runt fem gånger för insamlingar och dykning med Klubbans egen ROV (remotely operated underwater vehicle)! Några höjdpunkter under Klubban-veckorna är alla studiebesök som görs. Självklart till Havets hus i Lysekil, men också till Kosterhavets nationalpark (Sveriges enda marina nationalpark!), Tjärnö marina laboratorium (tillhörande Göteborgs universitet) och Göteborgs naturhistoriska museum på väg hem till Uppsala.

Fina Belone!

Något väldigt trevligt med att vara så länge på Klubban är att man också har några lediga dagar; alltså perfekt tillfälle att se mer av Skaftö och Lysekil! Att cykla till Grundsund eller Gullmarsskogen rekommenderas starkt, eller varför inte göra en dagsutflykt till Göteborg?

Uppsala: Sommar bucketlist Ska du vara kvar i Uppsala i sommar men har inte en aning om vad för något du ska hitta på? Här är sommarens Bucketlist för att hjälpa dig på traven!

1. Spela Ölkubb - En kul lek om man är flera där det gäller att vara snabb och pricksäker. Går självfallet utmärkt att köra med annan dricka än öl.

2. Bada vid Sunnerstabadet 3. Prova alla nationers sommarresturanger - Flera nationer har sommaröppet med både pub, resturang och klubb. Passa på och testa sommarutbudet.

4. Gå på bio vid ån 5. Läsa Foffen - Lär dig om den svenska floran och faunan. Lika kul för gröna som vita biologer.

6. Ha picknick i Botaniska trädgården - Ta med en härlig picknick eller köp en på Victoria cafeét och åhnjut alla växter i den vackra trädgården. Tips: man får sitta på gräset.

7. Vandra Eriksleden (ca 6 km lång från gamla Uppsala kyrka till Domkyrkan ) - Du får se allt från Kungshögarna och vid sträckta ängar till grönskande skogspartier. Perfekt för solig dag, glöm inte matsäcken ! Tar ca. 2,5 h 8. Spana in gamla skatter i Domkyrkans skattkammare 9. Minigolf på Uppsala minigolfpark -Finns inomhusbana med 18 hål som är perfekt för regniga dagar, och t vå 18-håls banor utomhus. Finns ett cafée som man kan besöka även om man inte spelar; utmärkt i samband med en promenad längs Fyrisån!
