Words from the presidemt of BÄR

Hey everyone!

Guess what? The first edition of Bladet for this year is finally out! And with that comes my debut in Bladet with the chairman’s chronicle! Spring is around the corner, the sun is warming up, and the snow is melting away! Soon, little flowers will pop up in the ditches, and it’ll be time to put away the winter jacket. Streets are clearing of gravel, and before you know it, those lemon butterflies will be fluttering about! I think I speak for many when I say that spring is a breath of fresh air—brighter days, nature peeking out again. With that, we’re gearing up for the end of courses, followed by new classes, labs, lectures, seminars, and maybe even a lucky excursion? Personally, I’m eagerly anticipating lunch outdoors in the sun again!

It’s been two months since I stepped into this role, and let me tell you, it’s been a wild ride of emotions. But mostly, I’ve been pumped about what this year has in store! As a first-year student, if you told me a year ago that I’d be the president of BÄR, I’d have thought you were joking. Mostly because I thought I would be studying physics, but being trusted with such a big position felt far away. Nonetheless, we all have settled in pretty good in our positions in the board, and we’ve achieved a lot in these initial months, like hosting the first two BÄR-meetings of the year, put together a chemistry and math workshop, and by the time you’re reading this, the Bio Days have already happened, but as I’m writing this I already know it’s going to be a blast! We’ve started gearing up for what’s ahead in BÄR, and if you’re curious about who we are, there are introductions of all of us further ahead in the magazine!

If you’re looking for me you’ll probably find me at Ångströms or BMC if I’m not already in the BÄR-skog, since I’m currently doing the chemistry term! It’s like a big where’s Waldo over Uppsala instead of just EBC haha! If you can’t find me, you can reach me by email bio-ordf@utn.se, but feel free to reach out by any social media you find me on, even if you just want to chat about anything!

And by the way, I hope you are attending the BÄR-meetings we arrange once a month!

Lots of löv, Amanda-linn

Board of BÄR 2024

Amanda-linn

Hi! My name is Amanda-linn and I am in my first year of the biology candidate program. I am also the president of BÄR, and I look forward to a lot of things this year! It’ll be really fun to work with the rest of my amazing board making your year as great as we can, with everything regarding studies, sittningar and more! So far it has been really fun learning more about the section, UTN and the university in general, and i am looking forward to learning more! I am also looking forward to getting to know all of you, and it has been great so far. A fun fact about me is that I collect unusual

Agnes

Hi, my name is Agnes Hallin and I’m studying my second year of biology! I’m the vice president of BÄR, and what I’m most looking forward to this year is getting to know our board and all of you fellow members, and of course, I’m excited to organize the candidate sittning for our beloved thirdyear students. A fun fact about me is that I collect Moomin mugs and can tabs, so don’t hesitate to send them my way;)

Carolina

Hi, my name is Carolina Cagenius and I’m in the first year of the biology candidate program. Im also the treasurer in BÄR, so my main job is to say no to crazy expensive ideas from the rest of the board, but I look forward to being able to explore and test out new ideas for BÄR! A fun fact? I have a really cute dog, if you ask nicely I’ll show you pictures of her!

Tom

Hello! My name is Tom and I’m currently studying my first year as a biologist! As a board member (or the one and only board member if you’d like) I’m looking forward to taking care of ”Slåtterängen” later this year and further improving our section in as many ways possible! Fun fact? I like Haggis!

Hi! My name is Olivia Nygårds and I am a second year student of the biology candidate program. The thing I look forward to the most is to be able to help and support all the students in our programs with various educational matters and to get involved in BÄR alongside the other engaged people in the section! A fun fact about me is that I’m a musician and have played keyboard in a band called Swaya, and we’ve got an EP out on Spotify!

Olivia

Annie

Hello! My name is Annie Thulin and I’m a second year biology student. As the secretary of BÄR I’m of course looking forward to writing protocols, it would be a boring position if I didn’t like it haha! But I’m also excited to hang out with the other board members and BÄR-members, and hopefully getting more people involved and excited about BÄR! A fun fact about me? I have a burn mark on my stomach after the one time I made halloumi fries with no shirt on.

Penina

My name is Penina and I am in my third year. As information responsible I am really looking forward to working with the rest of the board as we all seem to enjoy each other’s company and share the same level of ambitions. Its really fun to gain knowledge about the section, the university or UTN and I enjoy being helpful when people ask me things (hint: never doubt asking me things!!). On a less serious note I am also really looking forward to posting memes for the section’s members every Monday! Its really fun to make them and even more when people seem to enjoy them. A fun fact about me is that I have played guitar since I was 15!

Adam

My name is Adam Jansson and I’m studying my 1st year of my master in ecosystems and aquatic ecology, or my 4th year in total. The things I’m looking forward to the most is to work with this supernice group of people, also known as the board, and hopefully be a nice study social responsible person creating an even better environment than before! Fun fact about me is that I have 9 tattoos and I can’t wait to get more!

We hereby present the board of BÄR 2024!

BIF 2024

Emma Moberg, Daniel Thorell and Elvira Barinaga, we are BIF 2024! We are here to make sure that you do not become a total couch potato this year. With us you can expect to try out new sports and activities, be social, sweat a bit, maybe get hit in the face by a ball or two and enjoy fresh air. And maybe you’ll even get a cool patch, if you show up to the right activities. Apart from continuing old traditions, our goal is to implement some new ones: a running group that will start up in March and a climbing group in April. Also activities for you by you, where you can choose the activity and hold it (with a friend or alone) and we organize it. Here comes some propaganda: if you have any ideas regarding activities that you want to see happen, we have a questionnaire you can fill in in our story highlight on instagram.

Emma Moberg

Year: 2

BIF activity you cannot miss out on: ÅM, all of the activities are super fun. You don’t need any previous experience it´s just fun to compete against the other UTN faculties.

Interesting sport fact: The world’s quickest football goal was scored 2,4 seconds after kick-off.

Daniel Thorell

Year: 2

BIF activity you cannot miss out on: The running group! Running by yourself is fun in my opinion but running with other people is even better. All paces and effort-levels are welcome. So, don’t be afraid to join if you enjoy running and want to sweat, exercise and have a good time.

Interesting sport fact: Humans are the only organisms that play sports.

Elvira Barinaga

Year: 1

BIF activity you cannot miss out on:

Climbing! Whether that be the climbing group or an activity that occurs once. It’s super fun to get to act dumb on the wall and inhale chalk for hours on end

Interesting sport fact:

There is a cross country trail in New Zealand that goes from the northernmost point to the southernmost point, to complete it you have to canoe from one island to the other.

Spring recipes

Text & Photo: Fredrika Höög

Spring is finally here! Slowly but surely, the snow is melting and the cold is retiring for now. The birds are singing. It won’t be long before coltsfoot and snowdrops are growing in the ditches. To think, you can finally dust off that bike of yours that has been locked in a shed for ages. Except for all this wonder, Easter is fast approaching, therefore it is time for… springfika! But what should you bake for Easter or the weekend? Well, here are 2 suggestions to help you on the way!

1. Lemon and lime cheesecake

Pastries and desserts with citrus are some of the most delicious things I know and then why not combine that with one of the best cakes there is, cheesecake! Therefore I now present one of my absolute favorite recipes. It is luxurious, light and fresh. A cake you just have to taste. It is also perfect to prepare a few days before and then put in the freezer. No need to stress on the day of the party right? Or why not hot up a bleeck day with some everyday luxury? No matter what, you won’t regret making this cake, I guarantee it.

Ingredients:

Base:

150 g butter

300 g Digestive biscuits

1 ½ dl Coconutflakes

Filling:

6 gelatine leaves

1 lemon ( juice & peell)

3 lime (Juice & peel)

600 g cream cheese

2 sweetened condensed milk

2 ½ dl whipped cream

2. Chocolate tosca cake

Steps:

Crush the Digestive biscuits and blend them together with melted butter and coconutflakes into a crumbly mass. Push out in a springform with a spoon until smooth and put it in the fridge. Put gelatin leaves in cold water and warm up the lemon and lime juice. Melt gelatin leaves in the hot citrus juice and leave to cool down. Mix cottage cheese with a fork until soft and fluffy, stir in the condensed milk and mix properly. Add prepared citrus mix and the citrus peel. Carefully add whipped cream and stir until even. Pour the filling in the springform and put in the fridge again for at least 4 h (but preferably overnight). Done! Easy peasy lemon squeezy!

“False” tosca cake, “ryttarkaka”, chocolate tosca cake. There is a Swedish idiom that goes “ A dear child has many names” and that certainly is the case for this cake. Which is the right one? No idea, but what does it really matter. It is one of the simplest recipes I know and extremely forgiving. I mean, chocolate, coconut and tosca. Can it get any better? It is also just as good cold as warm so it is no problem to freeze the cake.

Ingredients:

Chocolate Cake:

150 g butter

4 eggs

3 dl sugar

2 tsp vanilla sugar

1 dl Cocoa

2 pinches salt

3 dl Flour

Tosca:

5 ½ dl Coconut flakes

75 g butter

1 ½ dl whipped cream

1 ½ dl sugar

1 dl light syrup

Steps:

Put the oven at 200 °C. Melt the butter to the cake and put it on the side to cool a bit. Whisk eggs and sugar fluffy and stir in the cocoa, vanilla sugar and salt. Add flour and the melted butter and blend until you get an even batter. Fill a long pan ( ca 20 x 30 cm) and bake in the middle of the oven for 15 min ( the cake has to be enough baked to carry the tosca so it should have a small crust on top). While the cake is in the oven, mix the ingredients for the tosca together in a pot and boil on middle heat while stirring. One boiling let the tosca simmer for 5 min. Take out the cake of the oven and put the coconut tosca on top. Even out the tosca and bake for 10 min further until it is nice and golden. Let the cake cool down before cut in squares. Eat newly baked or freeze and save for later!

Linneas utbyte i Edinburgh

Namn: Linnea Eriksson

Vart har du studerat? Edinburgh (Skottland)

Period: HT 2022

Vart bodde du under dina utbytesstudier?

10

Kristins utbyte i Seoul

Namn: Kristin Erlandsson

Vart har du studerat? I Seoul, Sydkorea

Period: HT 2023

Vart bodde du under dina utbytesstudier?

Degree project: How, when and what to do?

A bit of this and that:

Thought a lot about the bachelor thesis? Do you want to do a project instead of just writing for weeks on end? Then maybe a degree project is for you. What is a degree project? It is an examination for bachelor students that can be done instead of the classical bachelor thesis consisting of only writing. You might not know of this because the course can not be found in the bachelor program syllabus or at Antagning.se. This is because “Degree project C in Biology” is a course that requires you to apply directly to one of IBG’s coordinators. The reason is that you need to first find a project and then fill out an application form and project plan that you then send to IBG. Once they are satisfied, you will be admitted to the course. There is a lot to keep track of during the process so here are are a few things that are easy to forget when trying to find your bachelor thesis that could help you avoid a lot of unnecessary stress. Remember that all projects are individual though and that there will always be exceptions.

• Don’t take on too much! The project is 15 hp, usually corresponding to 10 weeks of work. The course is a great way to get more lab experience and working experience on projects individually, but you are still required to write a scientific report.Think about that when you do your project plan/ accept a project so you don’t get overwhelmed. If it doesn’t feel right, say no!

• It takes time! Finding a project can be super fast, but sometimes it takes time and that's okay. Try to start looking for a project at least 6 months before. Sometimes it can take much shorter though. Sometimes longer. Make sure to give yourself time to really find something you like to do.

• Don’t know what to do? Ask older students or think about which course you liked best so far. Ask lecturers or lab teachers if they can recommend a project or subject. They usually either have something themselves or can recommend someone for you to reach out to that have similar projects. You can also check out Uppsala university project page which has adverts for both projects and summer jobs. Remember that if you want to do a project in botany, then maybe a project in November will be a problem. Try to be realistic when deciding what period to do the project.

• Apply for the Bachelor thesis course too. Why? Because if you apply for the course during the same period and don’t get a degree project, then you can just do a bachelor thesis.

• Apply on time! Make sure that you send all your papers (project plan, Ladok result certificate and application form). They usually want it a month before the start of the project, but it is often possible to turn in until 2 weeks beforehand.

• Start writing! Researching and writing is something you should do continuously. It might seem boring but the time flie by, so don’t wait until the very last minute. You will thank yourself in the end, promise!

• In order to get your degree diploma from Uppsala university, you need to have the last points/ course that are registred in Ladok from Uppsala university. Make sure, if you do your degree project somewhere else, that you still have a course after or that you have some other points from the university that register afterwards.

12

From start to finish

It can feel like a long and complicated process to get a degree project. Sometimes it might even be a bit overwhelming. Here are 12 general steps to help you on your way to a complete bachelor project!

1. Start the search. Think about what you want to do!

2. Reach out to professors, or/and existing projects on the “Uppsala project site” or a company. Write to more than one!

3. Go to interviews. Be prepared with potential questions about project.

4. Choose a project/ thesis that you like.

5. Make a project plan (1-2 pages) together with your supervisor and sign the application form. Make sure to read all the instructions for the degree project before sending it in.

6. Admit your project plan and application form with supervisor to the counselors best suited to your thesis at IBG.

7. The counselor admit you to the course named “Examensarbete C/ Degree project C”.

8. Carry out the project with continuous laboratory work and writing of report. Recieve feedback on the first draft from supervisor and rewrite/ correct it. Get OK from supervisor when done.

9. Present the project in a 25 min presentation and answer questions. Give feedback on another report.

10. Rewrite report after feedback from opponent. Admit the final version of the report to the cordinator together with a title page and a popular science summary for your report.

11. Wait for feedback from counselor, review and send for approval.

12. Bachelor project finished!

Portos visa behöver mer kärlek in my humble opinion

To Read or Not to Read?

Have you, at least once in your life, experienced the wonder of a good book? Perhaps it was a fairytale you read when you were little, or a dystopian novel you found during your teens. Like many other students, I have been reading a lot less ever since I started university. Perhaps the long days of lectures and browsing through textbooks are the reason behind it, because when I finally get some free time on my hands it has been difficult to pick up a book. But how do we change that? After all, reading can provide good relaxation for a busy mind. The following text is made to help you find ways to incorporate more books in your everyday life, and hopefully bring back the joy of reading!

The best way to find motivation for reading is to set a clear goal. Choose a number of books or pages, which you aim to complete during a specific timeline. There are many apps and web pages designed to help you keep track of your goal, and they can also send you reminders to make sure you stick to it.

How Do I Stay Motivated?

It’s easy to fall back into old habits and lose motivation when times get difficult. Here is a list of suggestions that could help you stick to your goal.

• Read only what you enjoy

If you don’t like what you’re reading, give it up. It’s better to stop and find another book, or you might lose your motivation. Reading shouldn’t be a chore. It might take a couple of tries to find a perfect fit, but try to search different authors, and perhaps explore some genres you enjoyed when you were younger.

• Compete with a friend

When that inner motivation is lacking, it can be helpful with some pressure from the outside. Get together with a friend and set individual goals for your reading. Who reaches theirs first?

• Join a book club

Not only is this a great way to gain motivation, but also an easy way to meet new people. Many nations in Uppsala have their own book clubs that usually gather once a month or so. You could also create a club with your friends. Get together over a fika and discuss the latest book.

• Read in public

If it’s difficult to read alone at home, try sitting in a library or in a café. This way, you limit the distractions that can be found at home, such as the pile of laundry or other house chores. Perhaps it can also be helpful to be surrounded by other people. 15

How Do I Find the Time to Read?

A student’s life is busy, so it’s necessary to make good use of the limited free time. Below are a few tips that could help you reach your reading goals faster.

• Always bring a book with you

A day can be filled with unexpected moments of waiting. Perhaps you’re waiting at the dentist’s office, you’re sitting on the bus, or your friend is late to arrive at the café. Use this time to read a few pages, and you might even notice that time passes faster.

• Listen to audiobooks

If you’re really busy, this can be a great alternative since it allows multitasking. While listening to a book, you could sew on your overalls or cook dinner at the same time! Did you know that the libraries in Sweden have an app that allows you to listen to audiobooks for free? The app is called Biblio, and all it requires is that you have a Swedish library card.

• Create a reading habit

I have noticed that I usually have some time to read before bed. It is a great time to relax and prepare for sleep. By repeating this daily, it soon becomes a habit.

The Editorial Staff’s Best Reading Suggestions

“The Midnight Library” by Matt Haig

“I read this book at a time in my life when I was filled with a lot of doubt and many questions. It brought me a lot of comfort by acknowledging things that most of us can relate to, while also consisting of a thrilling story. This is a heartfelt book based on a very exciting concept, and I would recommend it to anyone.” /Lina

“I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jennette McCurdy

“I’m an inexperienced reader, so this is a tip for anyone who wants to start reading but still isn’t sure of what to reach for. This book is thrilling, raw, touches on important topics, and is generally good to read in my opinion.” / Hanna

“Anxious People” by Fredrik Backman

“May sound heavy, but this book is so much more than just that. It’s a funny, thoughtful, and entertaining story about how you can both lose yourself and then find yourself in life again. And it does this with plenty of humor, mixed with seriousness. What else can you expect from the author of ‘A Man Called Ove?’” / Fredrika

“Five People You Meet in Heaven” by Mitch Albom

“This book almost gave me a spiritual experience by making me question what I believe and what is possible. It brought hope, and was very well-written.” /Julia

BIF i Romme

ARIES (Marc h 21- April 19)

TheCellinLysis

Dear Aries, the new year might feel like walking through mud and the stars tell a story of lacking motivation. Life as a cell goes on but in order to rejuvenate one sometimes must tear down walls and through lysis release a whirlwind of DNA and cytosol. Sharpen those horns and ram the walls confining you, to see the possibilities waiting in the world.

TheCollaboratingGardener

Dear Taurus, it is high time you equip your hooves with gardening gloves and prepare the soil for some green little friends. In order to reach your goals, you should ask you friends for assistance. Why not borrow cuttings from an unsuspecting Virgo, or ask a Leo for some extra sun beams to heat the earth?

GEMINI (May 21 – June 20)

Thedividingcell

Gemini you divided bastard! For several weeks now you have been in a stage of metaphase. The chromosomes are lined up, the microtubule are fastened and it is time to make something of it! Cell division will entail fast changes, with many things pulling at you. But after this testing time you will have double the skill!

CANCER (June 21 - July 22)

TheEmotionalLimnologist

Cancer, the rivers you cry should be the object of inventory in this spring. Your closeness to emotions is one of your best qualities, but underneath the spring rainfalls you need to find the source or else you risk getting swept away by the emotional floods. Let the water masses run off and you’ll give space for beautiful greenery. Ask a steady Taurus for help to keep your thoughts and feelings green.

LEO (July 23 - August 22)

The Radiant Sun Beam

Warm Leo, child of the sun. In the coming month, you will experience rejuvenation as a calm and strengthening period. Be like the bee and let the sunbeams guide you to your next adventure. Your golden radiation could attract opportunistic friends, but the milky way urges you to be careful, without sunscreen the best of manes burn out.
