Hi all biology students!

The holiday has sadly ended and for many of us, including myself, that means it’s back to business. When I’m writing this, most of you are probably even in the middle of your exam’s studies. That also means that a new term is just around the corner with new challenges and new opportunities. For some it might be the year of graduation, for others it might be the year of exploring the student life. And for some it might even be the year to turn on a new leaf.

For me, it is time to try something new and turn the reins over to the Editor-in-chief of 2025, Amanda-linn Bodin. It has been so much fun coming up with themes, exchanging ideas, writing recipes, piecing the paper together and honestly just hanging out with the other people in the Editorial Board. I have however not only had the wonderful opportunity to be Editor-in-chief this last year, but also to be a part of Bladet for 3 and a half years. I therefore want to end this with encouraging you to try out Bladet. There is no prestige in Bladet, you don’t have to know everything or anything about writing in a paper. You don’t have to sign up for anything and you can contribute however little or much as YOU want. It is so much fun for so little work.

I promise you want regret it!

Words from the President of BÄR

The time has come, and my final presidential column begins. A year ago, I wrote my first column, and so much has happened since. While most of our board’s adventures have already been shared in Bladet, here’s a quick update! The semester had just started last time I wrote, and since then, we’ve hosted the Boards Through the Ages seating at Östgöta Nation, represented BÄR at the Young Scientists’ national assembly to improve international student accessibility, held our second general meeting, and elected a new board.

Needless to say, it’s been a packed schedule, and as I write this, we’re busy finalizing everything to pass on to our successors. And that’s without even mentioning all the incredible activities organized by Darwin and BIF, such as a seating at Fyrispark, the Nobel after-party, other seatings, bowling, climbing, and all the fun you could imagine! Not to mention that a new VälCom has been appointed, and the Bio-Days team has already started preparing for next year. And let’s not forget the countless meetings our council representatives have attended—truly a busy year.

I could never have imagined what this year would bring when I stood for election as one board member at the annual meeting where I was voted in. None of it would have been possible without you, our members, who have supported us and been with us every step of the way. It also wouldn’t have been possible without the other elected representatives: no seatings without Darwin, no sports without BIF, no magazine without Bladet, no job without Bio-Days, and no participation in decision-making without the council members. And, of course, it wouldn’t have been possible without everyone who devoted their time beyond that—thank you to the club committee, the editorial team, the course representatives, VälCom, and Bio-Days. You are incredible.

Before I hand this column over to my successor, I want to take a moment to extend a heartfelt thank you to my board. Without you, none of this year would have been possible. You’ve stood by my side through thick and thin, supported my crazy ideas, and helped me when things got tough.

The effort you’ve put in this year and how much you’ve delivered is beyond words. I will miss our unnervingly long board meetings every week, and I will miss hearing about your adventures when we were supposed to be discussing more important matters—though now, there are no more “important matters.” You’ve been my colleagues, but more importantly, you’ve been my friends. Never before have I so willingly stepped in as IT support, and never before have I been so happy as when I see you all together. I want to thank you deeply for this year and, once again, say how wonderful you are. When I sit at my job in the future, reminiscing about my time here, it’s you I’ll think about. You will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Anmälan till tentor och omtentor i Ladok måste göras senast 12 dagar innan tentan. Det går därefter inte att anmäla sig hos IBGadministrationen eller i tentasalen. Om du ska skriva tentamen med speciella anpassningar måste du anmäla dig 14 dagar innan tentamen

Sent svar vid sen anmälan

Vid sen anmälan kommer beskedet om antagning till kurs ofta mycket sent. Besked om antagning till kurs kan dröja ända till sista vardagen innan kursstart. Kom också ihåg att ni som anmäler er via sen anmälan, antas i den ordning ni har anmält er. Alltså, den som anmält sig först och är behörig får den första platsen o.s.v.

Late application to master’s programmes

Late application for master’s programmes starting autumn 2025 opens on January 16 and closes on February 28. Apply at universityadmissions.se

Application to exchange studies

The application to exchange studies in accordance with IBG and the science faculty agreements opens on January 15 and closes on February 15. Link to the application will be up on the IBG website, www.ibg.uu.se.

Register for exams

Registration for exams must be made at the latest 12 days before the exam. You cannot register at the IBG administration or in the exam room after that. If you are writing the exam with special needs, you need to register 14 days before the exam.

Late application notice

When applying late for courses, the admission notice will often arrive very late. The notice can be delayed to the last working day before the start of the course. Also, remember that students who apply late are admitted in the order of application. That is, the one who applied first and meets the course requirements will get the first spot.

Limnology– 15 credits

Benthic invertebrates, macrophytes, plankton, fish, bacteria and viruses, biogeochemical cycles and lakes in general – if that sounds interesting, then limnology is a perfect course to start the autumn semester with! This 15 credits master level course includes every aspect of freshwater ecology, from large piscivorous fish on the highest level of aquatic food webs to nutrients such as carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous, and their circulation in the ecosystem. The course is part of Ecosystem and Aquatic Ecology, one specialisation within the master’s programme in biology at IBG, but it is also very suitable for the third year of the bachelor's programme and for teacher students in biology as well. Practical and group work s are major parts of the course, including R, water chemistry labs, plankton microscopy, fish dissection and species identification.

Another highlight of Limnology is the field work! Early in the course, there is a part with littoral ecology which includes sampling of macrophytes and benthic invertebrates from Ekeby pond and Hågaån with small boats, long sieves and Ekman grabs However, the major fieldwork is done at Erken field station, outside Norrtälje towards the end of the course. This week in October 2024 included projects such as gut content analysis in perch, antipredator responses of Lymnaea stagnalis and microbial respiration in sediments. The week is also a good opportunity for mushroom picking! So, Limnology is a great course which provides a very nice overview of lake ecosystems It is also highly recommended for anyone who wants to get experience from practical work related to freshwater ecology.

A Berry crazy year in rewind

The past year has been both tumultuous and a pure joy. When we, the 2024 board, were elected at the annual meeting, our minds immediately started racing, and we were eager to get started as soon as possible! Now, after a year of working together, we can finally look back and marvel at how much we’ve accomplished. BÄR meetings, statute amendments, policies, budgets, and board meetings were the first things we tackled last January. Then came chemistry and math workshops, countless reports from the education committee (Utb-U), the bachelor’s dinner, even more statue amendments, the reception, the BÄR-Day, BÄR’s first general meeting, the overall inauguration, the ”Boards Through the Ages” seating, the national assembly of Young Scientists, BÄR’s second general meeting, the launch of a new website, and finally, BÄR’s Berry Crazy Year in Rewind in Bladet.

We’ve thought a lot about what the highlight of this year has been, and we’ve come to realize that it’s impossible to choose. Should we pick the bachelor’s dinner because of how fun it was to plan and execute? Or the general meetings with their accompanying statute amendments because we believe they set the tone for a new era in BÄR? Perhaps the ”Boards Through the Ages” seating because of how amazing it was to meet our predecessors? Or should we choose an entire category of activities, such as all the team-building events that made our time as a board so fantastic?

When I asked the rest of the board, they agreed that the Boards Through the Ages seating was our absolute favourite memory. From the moment the idea was sparked to all the planning—especially planning and rehearsing the entertainment—to the execution of the seating itself. It was an evening filled with incredible company, fun moments with our predecessors, and an energetic afterparty. Showing our predecessors what we’re capable of and, hopefully, starting a tradition for future boards was truly special. Personally, I dream of the day I’m at work, reminiscing about my time as a student, when a message pops up in my inbox about the next Boards Through the Ages seating. That will be a wonderful day.

I’d like to highlight something else. I choose our very first board meeting as a group. Looking back at how far we’ve come since that first meeting—both as a board and as friends—is truly remarkable. I choose to value those I initially thought I’d only call colleagues but who I am now proud to call friends. And I believe and hope the rest of the board feels the same way.

A huge thank you from all of us for this past year and the trust you’ve placed in us. Now, we hand over the baton to next year’s board, who will undoubtedly do an exceptional job. Thank you!

Året med BiF

Oj oj oj vad vi har hunnit med mycket under detta år! Bland annat har vi spelat ÅM i fotboll, innebandy, volleyboll och dodgeball. Ångströmsmästerskapen är något vi i BIF uppskattar väldigt mycket och trots inget avancemang till slutspel har vi bjudit på riktigt bra laganda och kämparglöd. Dessutom startade BIF under våren sin alldeles egna löpargrupp och under hösten har vi sprungit nästan varje tisdag i stadsskogen. Löpningen har blivit mer och mer uppskattad och ni kan förvänta er att det fortsätter även nästa år. Traditionsenligt arrangerades påskäggsjakt och paintball vilket alltid är lika uppskattat. Nu tackar BIF 2024 för sig och lämnar över till BIF 2025 efter BIFgalan i januari. Under 2025 kan ni förvänta er bland annat skidresa till Romme Alpin, Pole dance och mycket mer!

Winter recipes

It might not be christmas any longer, but that does not mean that winter is over. In Sweden, as most of us know, it’s quit the opposite. We are gradually moving towards longer days, but the snow might remain a few more days, weeks or even months. That makes the early month of the year perfect for hot cocoa and outdoor snow activities. And what could possibly better after a visit to the icerink or an entire day on the sledd then some fika?

1. Saffronmacarones

Saffron is a taste that most of us associates with christmas, but why would such a lovely spice be limited to just 1 month of the year? Naturally, once I stumbled upon these saffronmacarones or ”Saffron almond coockies” as it said in the original recipie, I was sold! They might not be as beautifully smooth as macarons but they certainlly have a similar texture. And they certainlly taste to delicious to only be eaten in december.

Ingredients:

Macarons/ coockies:

250 g almond flour

5 dl icing sugar

4 egg whites

Saffron butter cream:

2 tbsp water

0,5 g saffron

200 g butter

1 dl icing sugar

1 egg yolk

Optional : 1 orange

Steps:

Turn the oven on 175 °C and let the butter rest in room temperature while doing the coockies. Whisk the egg whites until you get a solid foam. Mix the almond flour and the icing sugar before carefully adding the foam to the mix. Use tea spoons to click out small coockies on a baking paper and then bake for 10-12 min. tips is to make them smaller then you think and keep a close eye on them in the oven, you do NOT want them to become to dry! While the macarones/ coockies are baking, mix water and saffron together and stand on the bench. While the macarones cool down, whip together the butter, icing sugar and egg yolk until it become fluffy. Add saffron and a few drops of orange juice before you whip together the butter cream again until even and smooth. Pipe the butter creame on half of the macarones/ coockies and then put the rest of the coockies on top. Perfect to store in the fridge or freeze to use later. Done!

2. Lime and white chocolate truffels

A perfect litte treat to the coffee, jobb event, friend gathering or weekend. It is super easy to make, does not cost a lot and are loved by all. They became a real hit at the Editor board of Bladet’s last game night. You can also vary the toppings in which you role your truffels in, creating different variants.

Ingredients:

300 g white chocolate

25 g butter

1 dl whipped cream

1 lime icing sugar

Steps:

Chop the white chocolate into small pieces and put in a bowl. Grate the lime peel and put together with the whipped cream in a pot. Warm the whipped cream just until it starts to boil and then pour over the chocolate. Stirr untill you get an even batter and then let it cool in the fridge for 3 hours. Once the batter has set, take tea spoons and scope out wished amount from the bowl. Role the truffels to wished shape and then role in wished topping. I prefered icing sugar that makes them look like snowballs, but why not try lime sugar or even coconout? There are endless possibilities! Once done, they can be stored in an air tight jar in the fridge.

Föreställ dig detta: Du flyttar till Uppsala för att plugga en kandidat i biologi, och oj vad kul det var! Så kul att du inte kunde få nog så nu vill du fortsätta med en master i biologi. Men du har ett problem: du vet inte vad du ska söka.

Vad ska en förvirrad biolog göra då?

IBG erbjduer många program, men om de inte lockar kan man söka sig vidare till andra institutioner och varför inte ett annat universitet? Hör från några biologer som efter sin kandidatexamen här på IBG letat efter grönare (eller vitare) betesmarker på andra instutitioner och lärosäten.

Vilket program går du?

Jag går första året på mastersprogrammet i toxikologi på Karolinska Institutet. Hur hittade du till programmet?

Jag gjorde examensarbete inom toxikologi och det var väldigt kul!! Så jag började leta efter mastersprogram inom toxikologi. Det finns miljötoxikologi på Uppsala universitet men jag tycker att mänsklig toxikologi med mer medicinsk inriktning på KI lät roligare!

Vilka kurser läste du i 3an på kandidaten? Tyckte du att de förberedde dig bra för programmet?

Sista året gjorde jag mikrobiell genetik, examensarbetet, grundläggande farmakologi och biokemi 2.

Är programmet mer vitt eller grönt?

Vitt! Men i framtiden kan man jobba både som grön och vit biolog, det öppnar verkligen dörrarna åt alla möjliga håll som bioscienceföretag, forensik, skönhetsindustrin, livs/läkemedelsverk men även inom kommuner med typ vatten/ miljökontroller. Man kan också bli häxa ;).

Kan man välja mellan kurser och inriktningar?

Man kan välja mellan “Cell and molecular toxicology” och “Regulatory toxicology”. Men man väljer inte förens man fått testa på kurser inom båda inriktningarna, så jag vet inte än!!

Tips till någon som tycker det låter intressant?

SÖK, det är kul! KI miljön är inspirerande och i framkant, dock är arbetsbördan på mastersprogrammet sjukt mycket större än på biologikandidaten. Men det är också kul. Eller sök Uppsalas om du inte vill flytta. Inom toxikologi verkar det finnas massa jobb i framtiden och väldigt mycket att forska på! Läs gärna lite farmakologi om du kan välja det, det är bra grundkunskap som kan va nödvändig och kul!!

Vilket program går du?

Jag går mitt andra år på mastersprogrammet i mark, vatten och miljö vid SLU i Uppsala. Hur hittade du till programmet?

Jag var intresserad av att börja plugga vid SLU eftersom universitetet har mycket samlad kunskap inom miljövetenskap och hållbart nyttjande av naturresurser, vilket jag är intresserad av. Kikade på programutbudet och hittade då ett program som förberedde en om diverse samhällsutmaningar som torka, översvämningar, markföroreningar m m

Vilka kurser läste du i 3an på kandidaten? Tyckte du att de förberedde dig bra?

Under 3:an pluggade jag faktiskt ett kurspaket på 30 hp inom hållbar utveckling. Jag var då redo att söka till masterprogrammet inom hållbar utveckling vid UU men kände efteråt att jag ville ha mer kunskap om mer nischade samhällsutmaningar. Sedan gick jag kursen Miljö- och förvaltningsrätt som förberedde en väl inom myndighetsutövning, vilket kan vara meriterande på CV:t. Kurserna var förberedande för min nuvarande utbildning på ett plan, men då var jag väldigt osäker på vad jag ville fortsätta med efter kandidaten. Jag kan i efterhand känna att kurserna Naturvård och Biologisk miljöanalys hade varit bra förberedande kurser

Är programmet mer vitt eller grönt?

Mitt program skulle jag säga är mer grönt än vitt. Visst finns det vita inslag men skulle säga att mitt program inte är så biologiskt inriktat och lutar mer åt grönt än vitt. Är hela programmet förbestämt eller kan man välja mellan kurser och inriktningar?

Mark, vatten och miljö är absolut inte förbestämt. Man kan välja att ta en examen inom antingen miljövetenskap eller markvetenskap beroende på vilka kurser man väljer under utbildningen. Många av dem som jag pluggar med har olika karriärmål med sina studier. Första året bereder en inom olika perspektiv på markvetenskap som biologiskt, kemiskt och fysikaliskt Överraskande intressant men sedan får man ett bredare perspektiv på mark ur en miljövetenskaplig synvinkel. Just nu gör jag en praktik på Länsstyrelsen i Uppsala län med "GIS inom miljövetenskap" som ämnesområde som jag upplever att programmet har förberett mig väl inom. Som valbara kurser i 2:an har jag valt en praktik-kurs och en kurs inom världens jordmåner. Den sistnämnda kan liknas lite som de förväntningar av en biolog att kunna ALLA arter på planeten. En markvetare “bör” kanske veta lite om olika jordmåner och under vilka förutsättningar de formas. Tips till någon som tycker programmet låter intressant? Markvetenskap kan låta främmande för många. Det innebär ungefär att man lär sig om jord och olika processer som händer där nere, vilka spelar stor roll för hur vi ska förvalta dem för att nästa generation ska få samma förutsättningar som vi har. Det är ju i stort sett vad hållbar utveckling handlar om, ur ett markperspektiv. Låter detta intressant? Ja, men då är detta rätt program för dig.

Vilket program går du?

Första året på Växtbiologi för hållbar produktion på SLU, campus Ultuna.

Hur hittade du till programmet?

Jag satt och letade kurser för period 2 i trean på kandidaten och hittade inget intressant på UU

Snubblade över "Växt-Mikrobinteraktioner" på SLU när jag scrollade genom antagning.se. Gick kursen med en kompis och kände wow, det här är ju hur spännande som helst och exakt det jag vill lära mig mer om. Den kursen var en valbar kurs andra året på mastern jag går nu så det slutade ju perfekt för mig. :)

Vilka kurser läste du i 3an på kandidaten? Hur bra förberedde dig kandidaten på mastern?

Förutom Växt-mikrobinteraktioner så läste jag toxikologi, självständigt arbete och MOG 2:an. MOG 2:an hjälpte mycket då man får lära sig mycket om metoder och öva på det praktiska. Jag kände mig väl förberedd för introkursen då mycket av de generella molekylärbiologiska var bekant och jag behövde mest lära mig mer om det växtspecifika. En del grejer från OEM, KvantBion och såklart växtdelen på Fysiologin är också bra att ha i bagaget så det är jag tacksam för. Är programmet mer vitt eller grönt?

Vitt, man labbar i labbrock (som ni kan se på bilden) och det är mycket mer molekylärbiologiskt än grönt. Är hela programmet förbestämt eller kan man välja mellan kurser och inriktningar?

Programmet går i olika inriktningar på olika campus, här i Uppsala är inriktningen Växters biotiska och abiotiska interaktioner och i Alnarp är det Växtskydd och förädling. Första året är ett gemensamt basblock med Alnarp (och också några kurser tillsammans med Umeå Universitet) och andra året får man välja helt själv när man gör sitt masterarbete och vilka kurser man vill läsa. Det finns också ett Erasmusprogram, emPLANT+ där man läser första året här i Uppsala och sen ett år på ett annat universitet i Europa, många av mina kursare år det och ska iväg till Österrike, Frankrike, Spanien Italien etc nästa år Jag tror jag kommer fortsätta med kurserna Växtpatologi och Genetic Diversity and Plant breeding. jag är väldigt fångad av interaktioner mellan växter och mikroorganismer, det är så intressant när det blir lite komplext :D Tips till någon som är intresserad av programmet?

Om du gillar växter men är lagd åt det mer vita håller så är det här ditt program! Man kan alltid testa en kurs i 3an på kandidaten och se om det känns rätt :) Och en bonus är att man får jobba en del med flytande kväve, vilket alltid är skoj och låter l ganska imponerande för folk utanför ditt fält.

Master i Infektionsbiologi vid medicinska fakulteten på Uppsala universitet

Hur hittade du till programmet? Vart hörde du talas om det?

Jag har länge varit intresserad av infektionssjukdomar och blev därför intresserad av masterprogrammet. När jag sedan tittade närmare på olika masterprogram inom det området fastnade jag för just det här.

Vilka kurser läste du i 3an på kandidaten?

Tyckte du att de förberedde dig bra för programmet?

Jag läste mikrobiell genetik, MOG2 och biokemi 2

Nyttiga kurser allihop men jag skulle framförallt säga att mikrobiell genetik och biokemi 2 har varit bra grunder för kurserna på mastern.

Är programmet mer vitt eller grönt?

Vitt, mer inriktat på den medicinska delen av bakterie-, virus- och eukaryota infektioner.

Är hela programmet förbestämt eller kan man välja mellan kurser och inriktningar?

Alla kurser i programmet är förbestämda och det verkar inte som att de programansvariga blir överlyckliga om man vill byta ut kurser. Däremot finns det inget som hindrar en från att byta ut kurser mot andra kurser man hittar själv eller mot en projektarbeteskurs.

Tips till någon som tycker det låter intressant?

Än sålänge tycker jag att det har varit kul och jag har lärt mig mycket nytt! Gillar man mikrobiologi och om man inte tröttnat på BMC än tycker jag definitivt att det är värt att söka!

A Polar Affair is the perfect book for (hobby-) zoologists, penguin-lovers and history-nerds. Lloyd Spencer Davis will not only provide you with a bunch of cute penguin-facts but also some disturbing facts. I don’t want to spoil you but apparently, it’s not only humans who cannot tell female and male penguins apart…

Beyond those little flightless birds, the book takes you back in time when Antarctica was first discovered, and expeditions raced to claim the south pole – so if you can handle a Norwegian win at the end – this book is for you ;)

Longing after warmth? My suggestion: Dune by Frank Herbert! I know… they are about to make the whole saga into movies but firstly, this is gonna take some time until they shoot all six books and secondly “The book is always better1”.

The interplanetary sci-fi novel takes you on the planet Arrakis, where spice is grown, a drug enhancing mental abilities. Paul Atreides, son of a duke, whose family accepts stewardship on this economically interesting planet, is told in prophecies and dreams about is destiny which kickstarts the adventure. Get ready for lots of sand and sandworms and riding on sandworms.

For those too lazy to read – you may watch the movies. Get seated and enjoy Timothée and Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson and a Skarsgård.
