THE TASK

JOINERY SKETCHES

Students had been given the chance to go back to basics, by showcasing our skills on performing drawings and sketches in the span of 8 weeks.

The challenge is to have those sketches strictly anything related to joineries only and taken out of materials that we could find on a daily basis that includes of our surrounding environments.

Sketeches are to be done progressively with the given timespan of eight weeks, which in total of 40 sketches are to be submitted, dividing it to 5 sketches each week respectively with a progress submission on week 2, in order to prove that work is being done according to the plan given by our lecturers.

THE OUTCOME

I have gone with a raw monochromatic design upon completion of this task, hence why the choice of hue as shown, with sleek curved lines as a descriptive symbol for each object.

The objects involved in this task are all based on given themes for each week by my lecturers, for example week 1 was "Room Sanctuary", which would be items that I could find in my room, and so on for other remaining weeks.

All sketches are strictly hand-drawn and the design i went with, best describes me as a person, who is simple and wishes to deliver the message as clear as possible. I would say i took my time performing these sketches as i myself enjoy hand-sketching, and i think this task fits best for the criteria.

FURNITURE DESIGN

Students were given their early introduction towards designing a piece of furniture, and to perform either in a group of two or individually, depending on our preference.

The challenge is to come up with a design that is suitable for mass production and convenient for all users. the design could be anything within the realm of a furniture, from desks to cabinets. Mass production meaning, materials chosen must be reasonable and affordable for all users.

The final product to be done digitally and compiled into two A2 presentations board, consisting of the design process, product description, and final product design.

THE OUTCOME

A removable desk setup, was the furniture design i came up with as my final product, hence the name "desk" but with a twist of "ez" to emphasis on the easy mechanism and usage of my item.

This design came to me as a thoughtful solution on a scenario where a person who has an empty desk who wishes to have a personal setup as an addition to it. The slide in and out input is pretty much self-explanatory and very much do-able in real life basis.

A minimal yet reliable touch to it, consisting of black and white colour as the primary colour and vibrant hues such as orange, red, turquoise, for the secondary colour, in order to bring attractiveness to the design. The planks are specifically placed to act as compartments and support for any item a user wishes to arrange, as the materials chosen for this product can withstand weights. It is to my understanding aswell that a laptop stand has become an essential to everyone, which is why it is applied to this product as a special feature

As for the final task, students will be put to test on their skills of model-making, which differs progressively from sketches as compared to the first task.

The model in this task must be entirely made up from corrugated boards, with room for other materials and as an extra but provided given the approval from respective lecturers.

The model must be based on a chosen name and theme, which had been given the option lists planted out by lecturers, and can be up to any scale as long as it is suitable and clearunderstanding for the item design.

A total of two models are to be created by students which consist of an invisible city and device design, that will be compiled into a journal as the final submission for this task.

THE OUTCOME

The chosen name and theme is ZEMRUDE and STEAMPUNK respectively. I personally feel that the theme best suits the chosen name and it is to my liking that this theme is explorable to work with.

Upon completion of this model, I had also prepared a design process presentation board in order to lay out the thoughts and inspiration i wish to approach on.

The idea behind this model is a steampunk city and a mode o transportation that can be found in the city, which is all made from corrugated boards. A steampunk city is to my understanding, a city where buildings will be found close to each other and adopts a layered look all throughout the city.

A city that is very industrial looking yet modern at the same time, hence the hovering vehicle that can be spotted.

The journal composed is a compilation of the design process and sketches, along with brief descriptions of my model upon completion of final model design.

REFLECTION

There goes my Semester Four, the refelection part is where I give myself the opportunity to put words in as a final conclusion towards my personal performance in this module, specifically FURNITURE DESIGN. From this module, I have been exposed to the furniture industry as along the way, us students were given a virtual visit to an existing factory of an existing mass-production furniture company, which is something new to me and a breather for us in our future careers.

Apart from that my lecturers had done the best possible way to deliver all lectures and tutorials for me to understand clearly with anything related to this module, I think it is best to highlight these parts in our reflections especially during this pandemic era.

My personal thought on my performance upon completing this module is that i have in a way gathered more learning outcomes, a level higher on understandings and new knowledges gained from beginning to end of this module, all thanks to my much appreciated lecturers.

Another vital aspect would be the passion that needs to exist while performing those tasks given, and i would say i enjoyed myself completing each work planted out by my lecturers, as everything compliments the workability and fairly manageable.
