Business. If I mentioned this topic to my son, he’d hit me with his favorite one-liner, “Funny or monkey, Mom?” (He never misses a chance.) But, as I reflect on the topic of Women in Business, my answer is clear – serious.

Have you ever entered a classroom, board room, or conference room to participate in or possibly run a meeting, and you look around only to find out you’re the only female in the room? I would venture to guess, that if you asked a woman in your life, there would be a definite ‘yes’ to this question – especially if she is in a leadership role. To this day, I attend multiple meetings on a regular basis where I am the only woman in the room, which seems ridiculous in the year 2025.

There are many challenges to being a woman in business. We are more likely to be overlooked or not given credit for our ideas or contributions. Women are underrepresented in the field of science, the engineering occupations, and executive leadership roles. Bias, both unconscious and explicit, continues to affect women’s opportunities for promotions, salary increases or recognition. There are intentional roadblocks thrown our way to continually test our commitment, drive and fortitude. It can get exhausting.

Instead of allowing these obstacles to slow us down, women are taking these challenges on as opportunities. As the barriers to start a business are being lowered, women are stepping into entrepreneurship in greater numbers. Companies are recognizing the benefits of gender-diverse teams and implementing policies aimed at creating equal opportunities. Women have the ability to balance analytical thinking with empathy that can enhance team collaboration and improve decision making processes. Studies show these teams outperform their less-diverse counterparts. Firms with women in senior leadership roles tend to be more profitable and socially responsible offering a higher quality customer experience because we bring a fresh outlook.

Women are redefining the workplace status quo and driving strategic business success. We bring creativity, empathy, and an innovative mindset to leadership, and our contributions are becoming increasingly recognized for their impact on profitability and an organizational culture. While there are challenges, the growing focus on inclusivity, diversity, and entrepreneurship presents new opportunities for women to continue advancing in business. It’s not just about breaking the glass ceiling; it’s about rebuilding the entire business landscape to be more equitable, sustainable, and inclusive for everyone.

So, when your son, or anyone else, jokingly asks if you’re talking ‘funny or monkey’, you can confidently say, “This is serious business” – because the future is being shaped by women. Enjoy this issue of the Connection highlighting some Women in Business right here in Bismarck-Mandan.

I’m looking forward to seeing all of you at the Annual Dinner on March 13. If you haven’t gotten your tickets, reach out to the staff at the Chamber EDC office and they can make sure you are able to attend the premiere event of the season.

Respectfully,

A Legacy of Care: The Story and Impact of Dakota Home Care

Home is where milestones are celebrated, memories are made, and life’s most meaningful moments unfold. Dakota Home Care was founded on the belief that everyone deserves access to highquality, compassionate care in the comfort of their own home.

Since 2012, Dakota Home Care has been part of a growing network of home care providers working to ensure individuals and families can access the care they need while maintaining independence and dignity. Their commitment to high-quality, adaptable care reflects a broader movement in North Dakota to provide more home-based solutions for aging and healthcare support.

A MISSION BORN FROM NEED

Dakota Home Care began when founder Jamie Fleck, a registered nurse, saw a critical gap in home care services. A friend’s sister had suffered a stroke at 37, leaving her with locked-in syndrome, a condition that left her fully aware but unable to move. Her family wanted to bring her home, but no agency in North Dakota provided in-home skilled nursing care for long-term cases.

Determined to change that, Jamie took action. When hospitals and nursing homes were unable to assist, she turned to the North Dakota Department of Health. Navigating the licensing process—something that had not been done in over 30 years— she became one of the first providers of long-hour, continuous skilled nursing care in the state.

Dakota Home Care, has served nearly 900 individuals since the business’s inception in 2012.

By 2014, Dakota Home Care expanded to offer pediatric private duty nursing, becoming the first provider in North Dakota to offer long-term, in-home skilled nursing care for children. Since then, the company has continued to grow and advocate for better home care options, ensuring that individuals of all ages can receive the care they need in the place they love most—home.

COMPASSIONATE, FLEXIBLE CARE

Dakota Home Care offers a wide range of medical and non-medical services, from short visits to 24-hour skilled nursing care. Their flexible model ensures that individuals receive support tailored to their needs, whether it’s occasional assistance or continuous care.

Beyond providing care, Dakota Home Care is a strong advocate for home-based care options, working with legislators and organizations to raise awareness about the importance and accessibility of in-home care.

“More and more people are saying they want to stay at home,” says Charlene Seifert, Director of Business Development and Client Services. “If staying home is possible, it is the first choice for most individuals and their families.”

As one of 20+ Chamber EDC members in the healthcare industry, Dakota Home Care contributes to a sector that collectively employs thousands in our community. These businesses not only improves quality of life but also strengthens the local economy — helping move business, and Bismarck-Mandan, forward.

Dakota Home Care also understands the challenges of attracting and retaining a skilled workforce in the home care industry. Organizations like the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC provide valuable networking and workforce development initiatives that help local businesses—especially in healthcare— address staffing needs.

“The networking events are especially helpful when looking to hire for administrative positions,” says Beverly Unrath, Owner, Administrator, and CEO. “It’s a great way to meet other professionals in the industry.”

A LIFELINE FOR FAMILIES

With over 871 individuals served, Dakota Home Care remains dedicated to helping people stay home as long as possible. The company’s values—Caring, Connection, Creativity, Can-Do Attitude, and Commitment—guide everything they do.

The impact of home care goes beyond health—it restores quality of life. One story that resonates deeply with the team is that of an elderly man who longed to return home from a facility.

His family worked with Dakota Home Care to prepare the home and coordinate care, and just before the Fourth of July, he finally returned.

“That summer, he was able to sit in his driveway and do fireworks with his family,” recalls Charlene. “He could watch the sunset from his own deck—something he could not do in a facility. His family says having him home has been ‘the greatest thing in the world.’”

Community connections play an essential role in supporting home care access. The Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC has served as a referral source, helping Dakota Home Care connect with families in need of services.

“There are people within the Chamber who have referred others to us,” says Charlene. “They’ve become a referral source.”

EXCELLENCE IN CARE AND LEADERSHIP

While awards are not their primary goal, Dakota Home Care takes great pride in the recognition they’ve received, including the Best Provider, Best Employer, Leader in Experience, the Golden Eagle Award, and the Remarkable Woman Award.

“Earning multiple awards last year is both humbling and incredibly rewarding,” says Beverly. “These recognitions are a testament to the dedication, compassion, and hard work of our entire team.”

Among these, the Golden Eagle Award holds special significance for their commitment to veteran care.

“Receiving the [Golden] Eagle Award in recognition of providing excellent care for veterans is truly an incredible honor,” Beverly states. “Caring for those who have served our country is not just a responsibility—it’s a privilege. Veterans have given so much for us, and ensuring they receive the highest quality of care, dignity, and respect is something I take to heart.”

Dakota Home Care attributes its high standards to continuous education, strong leadership, and direct feedback from clients and caregivers. They also prioritize employee support, offering recognition programs, professional development opportunities, and an Employee Assistance Program to ensure caregivers have the resources they need.

“Leadership is about giving employees the tools and resources they need to succeed,” says Beverly. “When you are in a caregiving role, it is a lot of work. We want to make sure our team feels supported, both professionally and personally.”

The Future of Home Care

As home care evolves, Dakota Home Care remains dedicated to setting the standard for compassionate, high-quality care. Over the next five years, they plan to strategically expand services while preserving the personal touch and client-centered approach that sets them apart.

“We aim to grow strategically, ensuring we have the right team, training, and technology to provide exceptional care,” says Beverly. “This includes enhancing caregiver support and retention and integrating innovative solutions to improve both client outcomes and caregiver experience.”

As home care needs grow, businesses like Dakota Home Care continue working to improve services, advocate for better healthcare options, and provide valuable jobs in the community. With the support of organizations like the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC, the region remains a strong hub for healthcare innovation, ensuring individuals and families have the resources they need to thrive at home.

“We want to keep home an option for a lifetime,” says Charlene. “People want to stay at home. They deserve that choice.”

From Vision to Vital: How

The Kids Therapy Center is Transforming Mental Health

“It takes a village to raise children. Our villages look different these days, and we’re part of your village,” shares Valerie Myers Bitz, Founder and CEO of The Kids Therapy Center.

For 15 years, The Kids Therapy Center has been a vital part of a growing network of mental health professionals in the BismarckMandan community. Their business plays an important role in ensuring families have access to compassionate, holistic care that helps them navigate life’s challenges.

What began as a small vision has grown into a thriving team of 20+ professionals, helping The Kids Therapy Center earn the recognition of 2024 Women-Owned Business of the Year. This award reflects more than just business success—it’s a testament to their unwavering commitment to expanding mental health access and breaking barriers in the industry.

Founder and CEO, Valerie Myers Bitz accepted the 2024 WomenOwned Business of the Year from the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC.

ROOTED IN FAMILY AND GROWTH

After completing graduate school, Valerie Myers Bitz returned to Bismarck with a clear goal: to create a space where children and families could access the mental health support they needed. She saw firsthand how difficult it was for parents to find specialized care for their children, and she was determined to help fill that gap.

“I’ve always had a passion for kids, so I wanted a place that parents could come to, knowing that their children were our number one priority,” Bitz shares.

In 2009, that vision became reality when The Kids Therapy Center opened its doors. From the beginning, the approach was unique—not just focusing on children but also empowering parents with the skills to support them. Bitz believes family involvement is key to lasting progress.

“We don’t just have special training to work with children, but we work with parents too,” she explains. “We believe that when families have the right tools, children have the best chance to succeed.”

What started as two therapists working around their own children’s schedules has grown into a team of more than 20 professionals, serving 110-130 patients daily. The growth happened naturally as more families sought support, reinforcing the need for specialized mental health care. Even as the center has expanded, the focus remains the same: to evolve alongside the mental health field while ensuring that no child is left behind.

“We believe in not leaving any child behind,” Bitz says. “As the field evolves, so do we, ensuring families receive the best possible care.”

A COMMUNITY RESOURCE

The Kids Therapy Center is deeply integrated into the BismarckMandan community, working alongside schools, businesses, and state organizations to ensure mental health services extend beyond their clinic walls.

“We don’t just work in the clinic. We’re in the school system. We’re at the state level. I serve as an expert witness in court for children who have been abused. We network with other facilities—providing supervision, consultation, and guidance to better help families.”

Mental health care is a collaborative effort, relying on multiple providers, educators, social workers, and advocates to create a network of support. The Kids Therapy Center is one of many resources in the region working to make care more accessible, often partnering with other professionals to provide specialized treatment and connect families with the right services. Through school-based initiatives, legal advocacy, and professional collaboration, they help bridge gaps in mental health care. Their growing reputation as a trusted resource reinforces a shared mission across the community—ensuring that individuals and families receive the care and support they need.

RECOGNITION AND LESSONS OF LEADERSHIP

Being named Women-Owned Business of the Year in 2024 is a humbling achievement for The Kids Therapy Center, reflecting not just their work, but the efforts of businesses in the mental health field. Through organizations like Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC, local providers are able to connect, share resources, and advocate for better mental health access in the community.

“It’s humbling. I’m very grateful for it,” she says. “But when I think of it, I don’t just see myself—I see my team and the leadership that goes into running this business.”

Leading a growing mental health practice has reinforced the importance of communication, honesty, and listening. Bitz is passionate about identifying the strengths of her team members and helping them grow.

“As a leader, you need to find the gift in your employee or the person you’re leading,” she explains. “Everybody has a different gift.”

Her philosophy is simple: leave ego out of business, focus on growth, and elevate others along the way. By investing in her team, she’s not just building a business but changing the future of mental health care.

THE FUTURE OF THE KIDS THERAPY CENTER

As The Kids Therapy Center looks ahead, its commitment to innovation and accessibility remains strong. Over the next five years, the center plans to expand its specialties and introduce new initiatives to meet the community’s growing mental health needs.

One of the most anticipated programs, the First Responders Recovery Program, is already in motion, offering trauma counseling for first responders and frontline workers. Additionally, The Kids Therapy Center is looking to launch The Round Table, a nonprofit providing scholarships to children and families to remove financial barriers to care.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Kids Therapy Center was named Women-Owned Business of the Year at our 2024 Celebrate Bismarck-Mandan event, recognizing its leadership in expanding mental health access. Other awards at Celebrate honor outstanding businesses of all sizes, community service leaders, and long-standing local institutions shaping our region’s future.

Plans also include The Toy Kingdom, a toy store where proceeds will support mental health services, and Knights of the Round Table, a teen-focused program teaching life and coping skills. Other upcoming efforts involve animal-assisted therapy, expanded holistic services, and resources to help families address electronic addiction.

With compassion, dedication, and a vision for the future, The Kids Therapy Center continues to grow its services and advocate for accessible mental health support, helping more individuals and families get the care they need.

When asked what she wants people to take away from The Kids Therapy Center’s work, Valerie Myers Bitz offers a simple but powerful message:

“There’s hope. There are services. You’re not damaged. And there are people here to help.”

What is colorectal cancer, and why is screening necessary?

Colorectal cancer develops in the colon or rectum, often starting as small, noncancerous polyps that can turn cancerous if left untreated. Early detection isn’t just important—it saves lives. Screening is essential because it allows doctors to detect and remove polyps before they become cancerous, significantly improving treatment success and survival rates. In recent years, colorectal cancer has been increasingly diagnosed in younger adults, leading to a change in screening guidelines from age 50 to 45. Those at higher risk—including individuals with a family history, genetic conditions, or inflammatory bowel disease—may need to start screening even earlier. Screening options include colonoscopy (the gold standard), stoolbased tests, and CT colonography. Talk to your doctor to determine the best screening plan for you—early detection can save your life.

How can I keep my company safe?

With most data housed virtually, threats to your business’s data can compromise years of hard work. Keeping your company safe is all about fostering a culture of awareness and continuous learning. Here’s how to educate employees and improve cybersecurity:

1. Provide Cybersecurity training. With training, your employees will be savvier about cybersecurity best practices, recognizing phishing attempts, creating strong passwords and following secure protocols.

2. Conduct regular security awareness campaigns and encourage safe online behavior. With periodic reminders, it is easier to remember to stay safe against cyber risks, including avoiding suspicious links and using multi-factor authentication.

3. Encourage employees to attend Cybersecurity classes and training. Whether for fun or a degree, cybersecurity classes dive deeper into keeping your data safe.

Bismarck State College offers training in cybersecurity to help you stay ahead of cyber threats. For more information, visit bismarckstate.edu/cybersecurity.

Looking for the Ultimate Combo of Healing, Recovery & Performance?

At NE Wellness, our private wellness suites offer a combination of infrared sauna, cold plunge, and red light therapy, providing a space for relaxation, recovery, and overall well-being. These therapies work together to support both physical and mental health.

Infrared saunas use gentle heat to penetrate deep into the body, promoting detoxification, improved circulation, and muscle recovery. Unlike traditional saunas, infrared heat warms the body directly, making it a more comfortable experience while still providing therapeutic benefits.

Cold plunges expose the body to cold water, which can help reduce inflammation, enhance circulation, and support the nervous system. Regular use has been linked to improved resilience, faster muscle recovery, and mental clarity. Red light therapy delivers low-wavelength light to the skin, stimulating cellular repair, collagen production, and reduced inflammation. This non-invasive treatment has been used to support healing, skin health, and energy levels. Whether you’re a beginner or already focused on your wellness journey, these therapies provide an easy way to take control of your health. Prioritize recovery, relaxation, and overall well-being. What common issues do you find businesses are facing with their employee benefits offerings?

A common issue I see businesses encounter is compliance. It is a critical aspect of benefits management that is often overlooked when an advisor isn’t involved. Ultimately, compliance is the business’ responsibility which is challenging when rules and regulations are constantly evolving. While we don’t offer legal advice, we stay on top of any changes and inform our clients when they may be impacted. This ensures that businesses remain compliant, avoid penalties, and can focus on running their operations.

Additionally, Bravera offers a complementary benefits administration platform which I encourage our clients to leverage. By using this platform, employers can streamline employee enrollments and monitor them electronically, significantly cutting down on manual tasks. This reduces administrative burden, saves valuable payroll hours, and eliminates paperbased processes that can contribute to compliance issues. Businesses will often increase employee engagement with their offerings by using a benefits administration system which promotes employee retention.

MEMBERProfile

What’s your professional journey, and how did it lead you to Open Water Marine?

I began in the powersports industry when I was 18. I started working for Open Road Honda right out of high school while I was attending Bismarck State College online. After progressing through the different departments at Open Road Honda I had finished my degree in Power Plant Technology. I went on and worked for Blue Flint Ethanol in Underwood. I missed the day to day interactions with customers and helping people so I decided to leave Blue flint in search of what was missing in my day to day. I went to work at High Plains Apache in Mandan as a service technician. My wife was working part time at Open Road Honda and Annette asked her if I would be interested in becoming her new service manager. I accepted the position and was really excited to build the service department into something great.

OPEN WATER MARINE MEMBER SINCE 2020

We brought on Marine service in the Fall of 2015. After a few years of servicing and repairing boats and pontoons I was pushing Annette and Open Road Honda to sell pontoons. Selling boats was not something that she wanted to do so she said “Shawn, why don’t you sell them and start your own business through Open Road Honda?” That is how Open Water Marine was born. We started operation in 2018, and in September of 2024, we outgrew our location at Open Road Honda and Moved just down the strip to 4515 Memorial Hwy. Since 2018, we have added propeller repair and fiberglass repair with two great employees with over 20 years of experience. Open Water Marine is the only propeller repair shop in the area.

From left to right: Corey, Shawn, Wayne and Ashley. Open Water Marine has been a member since 2020.

Can you share a pivotal moment, decision, or challenge that shaped the history of Open Water Marine?

COVID-19 was a challenge for Open Water Marine just like many other industries. I went 14 months with out a single piece of new inventory to sell. I was searching for inventory all across the country and Canada. I was able to find a few boats to sell but financially it was a challenge and showed me that we defiantly can’t keep all our eggs in one basket. We had to diversify if we wanted to continue to grow. Thats when we added pontoon rentals on the Missouri river out of Lakewood Marine in Mandan along with propeller repair and fiberglass repair. No one else in the state offers what we do and I am proud of the team we have built.

How has Open Water Marine adapted to the changing landscape of Bismarck-Mandan over the years?

We have diversified and our offerings. Not only do we work on all makes and models but we also strive to be the most accommodating. We will pick up boats and pontoons from across the state and bring them back to Mandan to work on them. We offer on the water repair for a lot of different issues along with water towing and recovery services if you get stuck or sink your vessel. As Bismarck-Mandan has grown and changed more and more people just want someone to take care of them with any issue that may have and I feel we have done a very well job at that. As much as the community has grown, people still want to be able to rely and refer someone to “my guy”. My guy will take care of you. Thats what Open Water Marine has strived to do. (We also offer services that people don’t realize including prop repair and fiberglass tub repair.)

What’s the most exciting innovation or trend you’re currently seeing in your industry?

We are really living in an exciting time in the boating industry. Engine manufactures are making higher Horse power engines and boat manufactures are trying to find ways to not only install one 400 HP or bigger engine but 2 and 3 engines on Tritoon’s. One of our Pontoon manufactures make a Tritoon that will accommodate two 500HP engines and will go 80 + miles and hour. To me this is very exciting as I love speed and horse power. The days of slow and small pontoons are over.

Looking ahead, what’s your vision for Open Water Marine’s future?

I want to see Open Water Marine grow and expand across the state. We do a lot of business in Mckenzie County and would love to open up a second location in that area. This winter, we expanded our offerings in to Ice house rentals for ice fishing. We rent our Ice Castles and portable ice houses with all the amenities to go along with them. This summer we are hoping to add campers to our rental fleet. We will then be able to offer pontoon rentals, ice house rentals and RV rentals.

How does Open Water Marine contribute to the local community beyond its products/services?

We have been working with Ministry on the Margins since in was in Leadership Bismarck-Mandan back in 2017. We love helping them and they really have a spot in my heart for what they do. We also donate to numerous different organizations like Dakota Children’s Advocacy Center, Young Professionals Network, Bismarck-Mandan Stock Car Association and various charities with silent auctions and donations.

What’s one thing about Open Water Marine that might surprise people?

We really want to let our employees spend as much time with their families as possible. We close down the whole week of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. We want our employees to be able to enjoy time with their family and make memories and not worry about work all the time. This is super important to me and I want our team to have a great home life because it translates to a great work life then as well.

How is technology changing the way you do business, and what innovations are you most excited about?

This is a very hot button topic in the marine world currently. Forward Facing Sonar is absolutely a game changer when trying to target fish. It is very controversial due to some anglers and enthusiasts equating it to cheating. The fish still need to be caught though... It is amazing to me how much underwater mapping/sonar has progressed in the past 10 years. We get full 3D views of the bottom and all the structures that lay underneath and we could only see depth in years past. In a lot of the fishing boats you will find 3 to 5 sonar screens with just as many different views of the bottom of your favorite body of water you are fishing. This has turned our techs into more of an electronic/electrician installing these compared to a traditional mechanic. I am most excited to see what A1 and GPS can do for steering and driving our boats and pontoons on the rivers and lakes of North Dakota in the coming years. This technology has the ability to completely revolutionize the boating experience and make it available to all skill levels of owners wanting to pilot a boat/pontoon. When I ask most consumers as to why they don’t have a boat/pontoon yet the most common answer is they are afraid of the river/lake and navigating around the obstacles that present themselves while on the water. With new technology this can be completely negated and that makes me extremely excited that we can become more inclusive as a industry as a whole.

BISMARCK STATE COLLEGE BREAKS ENROLLMENT RECORD WITH HIGHEST STUDENT COUNT IN SCHOOL HISTORY

Bismarck State College (BSC) has reached a historic milestone, achieving the highest enrollment in its 85-year history. With 4,445 students enrolled for the spring 2025 semester, BSC has surpassed its previous record of 4,392 students, set in the fall of 2011. This spring semester has 239 more students enrolled than the fall semester and marks the sixth consecutive semester of enrollment growth. Additionally, BSC has experienced a 20% increase in full-time students over the past two years, a testament to the college’s expanding academic offerings, industry partnerships and commitment to workforce readiness.

“This record-breaking enrollment reflects BSC’s commitment to student success and workforce-driven education,” said President Brent Sanford. “Our students recognize the value of an education that leads directly to careers and our partnerships with business and industry make that happen.”

In the past two years, the surge in BSC enrollment has been driven by a combination of factors, including the addition of 35 new degree programs in high-demand fields such as energy, healthcare, manufacturing, cybersecurity, and agriculture. Currently, BSC offers seven bachelor’s degrees, two more pending Higher Learning Commission approval, and numerous associate and certificate program degrees, all designed to prepare students for immediate employment. BSC has also focused on increasing services and flexibility for adult learners and non-traditional students, offering re-skilling and up-skilling pathways that align with emerging career fields.

“BSC’s dedication to workforce development is a key factor in our sustained growth. The focus on experiential, hands-on learning ensures graduates are prepared to enter the workforce immediately—often securing jobs before they even complete their degrees,” Sanford says.

STUDY CONFIRMS LIGNITE POWERS $5.49B IN ECONOMIC ACTIVITY AND SUPPORTS

NEARLY 12,000 JOBS IN NORTH DAKOTA

The lignite industry continues to be a major economic driver for North Dakota, according to a new study by North Dakota State University (NDSU) Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics. The study reveals that in 2024, the industry contributed an estimated $2 billion to the state’s gross domestic product (GDP), supported nearly 12,000 direct and secondary jobs, and generated $5.49 billion in gross business volume.

“The results of the study underscore the essential role the lignite industry plays in North Dakota’s economy,” said Dean Bangsund, research scientist at North Dakota State University. “From creating high-paying jobs to generating more than $5 billion in economic activity, the industry’s impact is substantial.”

SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO WORKFORCE

In total, lignite-related jobs generated more than $1 billion in labor income, which includes wages, benefits, and sole proprietor earnings. The study highlights the diverse employment opportunities supported by the lignite industry, including:

• 7,310 jobs in coal conversion and electricity generation across the state.

• 3,400 jobs in mining.

• 1,610 jobs in transmission and distribution.

ECONOMIC IMPACT AND BUSINESS VOLUME

Beyond job creation, the study highlights the lignite industry’s substantial contributions to North Dakota’s overall economic health. In 2024, the industry accounted for $2.0 billion in gross domestic product (GDP), representing a significant share of the state’s economy.

Additionally, the study reported a gross business volume of $5.49 billion, driven by extensive economic activity generated through the production, conversion, and distribution of lignite-based energy. This includes expenditures on equipment, services, and materials sourced from businesses across the Midwest, driving growth in related industries.

Furthermore, the industry contributed $100 million in state and local tax revenues, providing critical funding for public infrastructure, education, and community services. These figures highlight how the economic impact of lignite reaches well beyond the state’s coal-producing counties.

CERTIFICATION EXAM

The University of Mary continues to solidify its reputation as one of the nation’s premier nursing schools with its 2024 graduates achieving a 100% pass rate on the rigorous American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) certification exam. This extraordinary achievement places the graduates of the University of Mary’s Larry and Eileen Weigum Division of Nursing at the Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences well above the national average and underscores the institution’s unwavering commitment to academic and clinical excellence.

The AANP FNP certification exam is a highly regarded, competency-based assessment that validates a nurse’s clinical knowledge and professional expertise in providing care to individuals and families across the lifespan. Passing this exam grants nurses the FNP-C credential, a critical step toward licensure and clinical practice. According to the latest data from the AANP Certification Board, the national average pass rate for this exam stands at 73%, making the University of Mary’s perfect pass rate all the more impressive.

A PROGRAM BUILT FOR SUCCESS

The 100% pass rate reflects the exceptional quality of education and training provided by the University of Mary’s nursing program. This achievement demonstrates that we are equipping our graduates with the knowledge, skills, and ethical foundation needed to excel in their careers and make a profound impact on their communities.”

EXCEEDING NATIONAL STANDARDS IN CLINICAL PREPARATION

The University of Mary’s FNP program goes beyond national clinical training requirements, ensuring students receive superior hands-on experience before entering the workforce. With over 1,000 hours of clinical experience—exceeding national minimum requirements—students gain valuable exposure to diverse healthcare settings, working alongside experienced practitioners in primary care, specialty care, and rural healthcare environments. This extensive clinical preparation fosters confidence and competence, empowering graduates to seamlessly transition into their roles as nurse practitioners.

A Faculty Committed to Mentorship and Student Success

The success of the University of Mary’s FNP graduates is also a reflection of the dedicated faculty who bring decades of real-world experience to the classroom. The program’s faculty members, who are practicing nurse practitioners and healthcare leaders, provide unparalleled mentorship and personalized instruction, guiding students every step of the way.
