Dear Members,
Richard De Schutter, President
It’s hard to believe as the year rolls along that we are about to enter the Fall season. The House Committee has slated some wonderful seasonal events, kicking off with Halloween Fright Night. This family friendly excursion has turned into a Club favorite and, I suspect in the years ahead, indelible memories will be recalled by kids attending.
One group of folks who will be ecstatic for Fright Night upcoming is our hard-working kitchen crew. It will be the first event to be serviced by our new kitchen with completely revamped, state-of-the-art appliances and facilities. What this crew has done in upholding the Club’s culinary high standards during the transition working out of the portable kitchen is nothing short of amazing. The latest challenge was an August ending heat wave that drove temperatures in the food preparation galley to 120 degrees. With well over 150 diners booked for that Saturday evening, they didn’t miss a beat.
I’d like to add a word about golf safety. Recently we have had several near misses from errant golf balls crashing into where they are not supposed to go. The most serious incident took place on the tennis court when a missed shot hooked off the first tee crashed onto the tennis court, narrowly missing a tennis player at head level. Additionally, there seem to be many more errant shots from the practice facility finding their way onto members’ front yards and even roofs across Lemon Tree Road, which runs next to the practice facility.
We’re looking at additional signage on the golf course as an ongoing reminder and considering additional safety measures at the practice facility as well. But Safety First starts with awareness by golfers to not try foolish shots that needlessly put others in danger. Golfers, please be mindful.
On a brighter note, this edition of the Buzz features several articles by our staff team speaking to all the terrific progress underway. We all look forward to the benefits of our ongoing continuous improvement program and even better days ahead. All of which leads to a well-deserved SHOUT OUT to the hardworking members serving on Club committees, whose collective efforts coupled with our management team put it all together and make Birnam a special place.
See you at the Club.
Jordan Sweeney, CCM, CSW General Manager and Chief Operating Officer
There’s a lot happening at Birnam Wood as we continue to invest in the future of the Club.
Lake 17 has been drained, and work is set to begin September 15th, with construction expected to take 5–6 weeks. We appreciate your patience during this process, as the improvements will significantly enhance the experience on this hole. For more details, please see Brian O’Laughlin’s article on the next page.
We’re also excited to share that a new water well will be installed starting the last week of September, also with a 5–6 week timeline. This well is an important part of our golf course restoration plan and represents a significant long-term return on investment by making our water usage more efficient and reducing overall costs. As part of this project, we’re connecting all three lakes on the course, allowing them to function as a unified reservoir system dedicated to irrigation, another step toward more sustainable and cost-effective water management.
I also want to clarify something we’ve been asked frequently: yes, there will be golf next year at Birnam. While we are undertaking a major course renovation, completed holes will be reopened as Par 3s for continued play on-site. In addition, we’re working on additional arrangements to be announced shortly that would allow for extra play off site. We’ll announce full details as soon as the agreement is confirmed.
So, if you’re considering a cottage stay next year and are unsure about the golf situation, rest assured, we are doing everything we can to ensure golf is available in some form. Whether it’s our temporary Par 3 setup at Birnam or play off site, we’re working hard to provide as much golf access as possible during the renovation. Our kitchen remodel is also nearing completion, and we’ll be rolling out revamped menus once it’s done—stay tuned for some exciting new offerings.
Thank you again for your continued support and enthusiasm. We’re proud of the progress being made and are committed to making Birnam Wood the best it can be.
See you at the Club.
Brian O’Laughlin Director of Agronomy
As summer winds down,
we’ve made meaningful progress on several projects around the course that I’d like to share with you. Most notably, we have completed the draining of the pond on Hole 17, a major step in preparing the site for construction which is scheduled to begin on September 15th. During the draining process, many members expressed concern about the fish that had made the pond their home. I’m pleased to report that we successfully relocated as many as possible, including the large grass carp— affectionately known as Homer—who is now living comfortably in the pond on Hole 14. With the water now gone, we’ll allow the pond to dry out over the next few weeks, so the site is ready for the work ahead. Safety fencing and signage are in place, and I ask that you continue to respect those boundaries as we move into the construction phase.
the fall and winter. Once holes reopen, carts will be permitted in fairways only, with entry and exit limited to designated areas. Following these traffic patterns is especially important this time of year—as the turf needs every opportunity to recover and establish properly.
We also received excellent news on the water front. The Montecito Water District has officially approved the drilling of a new well for the Club. This project is a critical investment in our longterm sustainability plan and will reduce our reliance on costly potable water. Equipment will be mobilized in the second half of September, with drilling scheduled to begin the final week of the month and continue throughout October
Looking ahead, our fall maintenance season is just around the corner. Beginning September 22, we’ll enter a three-week stretch where only nine holes will remain open while the other nine are closed for aerification and rough interseeding. This schedule allows us to complete the work thoroughly while still keeping the course accessible each day. Aerifying the greens relieves compaction and sets the stage for healthier turf as we move into the cooler months, while interseeding the rough will strengthen coverage and improve playing conditions through
Together, the restoration of the pond on 17, the approval of our new well, and the upcoming aerification and interseeding, reflect our broader commitment to improving and protecting the course. Each project presents its own challenges, but each also provides long-term benefits that will enhance playability and ensure the health of our turf for years to come. I appreciate your patience and cooperation as we continue this work, and I look forward to sharing more updates with you soon.
As always, please remember to fill in your divots and fix your ball marks. I’ll see you out on the course!
Luis Flores

July and August were busy months for golf tournaments.
I wanted to recap three events that we hosted over that time frame: Men’s Robert Trent Jones Classic, Women’s Club Championship and Men’s Club Championship.
The 57th Annual Robert Trent Jones Classic was played July 24th through July 26th. It was another full field of 120 players. The format was 5 nine-hole matches. Field was divided into 10 flights of six teams. The winner of each flight automatically qualified for the Championship Horse Race. This year the committee decided to allow two “Wild Card” teams into the horse race. Those spots went to the team that won the most points over all five matches, but did not win their flight. The second spot went to the team with the most points in the two matches on Saturday, but did not win their flight. The champions were ecstatic about the committee’s decision. The horse race began on hole 17. Three teams were eliminated there. The nine remaining teams then played hole 18. Three more teams were eliminated. The six remaining teams then played hole 1. Three more teams were eliminated. That shrank the field down to the final three teams to play hole 18 as a 150 yard par three. Those teams were Peter Tortorici and Nicholas Coe, Alan Salzman and Brian Realmonte , and Tod Spieker and Chip Gibbs . Two of the three teams knocked it on the green, while Totorici and Coe were just off the green. After a good shot to get on the green, Tortorici and Coe could not convert their par putt. Next the team of Salzman and Realmonte had a tough putt from the back
middle portion of the green to the front right hole location. After a good effort on the first putt, the par putt slid by the hole. Leaving Spieker and Gibbs a chance to two-putt for the win. They had similar putt to the Salzman team, but from a few feet further. Tod Spieker’s putt went about five feet past the hole. His partner, Chip Gibbs stepped up and encouraged the spectators to cheer him on. He knocked in the clutch putt for the win. Tod Spieker and Chip Gibbs qualified as a “Wild Card” for winning the most points on Saturday. They rode that wave of momentum to victory. The Tortorici and Salzman teams played the hole again to decide second place. Eventually, Alan Salzman and Brian Realmonte would take second place and Peter Tortorici and Nicholas Coe would come in third.
The Ladies’ Club Championship was played over three days, August 11th, 12th, and 14th. The first match was Nancy Hunter vs. Elizabeth Slaught Elizabeth Slaught made about a 10-foot putt for par on hole 18 to win 1 up. There were two matches played on Tuesday, August 12th: Esther McKinley vs. Elizabeth Slaught and Kathy Barton vs. Jill Mazursky. The winners of those matches were Esther McKinley (2&1) and Kathy Barton (3&2). The finals were set for two former champions to play. The finals match was a well-played match with a few runs by each player. Kathy Barton started off the match quickly. She played the first three holes at even par, which gave her a three-up lead. Esther McKinley stayed with her game and played consistent golf for

the next five holes. Her momentum really picked up as they made the turn. Esther McKinley won hole nine through twelve to take a two-up lead. Kathy Barton answered back with a win on the fourteenth hole to cut the lead to one up. Esther McKinley then won hole seventeen to secure a 2&1 victory and successful defense of her 2024 victory.
The Men’s Club Championship was played from August 22nd through the 24th. Chris Gregoire got off to a slow start on the first nine holes of his first round on Friday with a score of 40 (+5). Andrew Anthony had the lead at that point in the competition at 34 (-1). From that point on, Chris Gregoire turned it on and never looked back. He shot 3 under par on the back for a round 1 score of 72. He carried that momentum into day 2 as he fired a fantastic score of 64. Brycen Wagner turned things around, as well. He shot a day 2 score of 67. Heading into the final round, Chris Gregoire had a six-stroke lead. He quickly extended that lead to 10 at the turn. He finished round three at even par (70). That gave him a 54-hole finishing score of 4 under par (206). Andrew Anthony made a ten-foot putt on the 18th hole to finish as the runner-up (218) over Brycen Wagner (219). The Senior Club Champion was Tony Lehman (152) over the runner-up, Rob Crane (155). The Net Club Champion had to be decided in a playoff between Chuck Journey and Kelly Vandever (141). Kelly Vandever won the playoff on the second hole.

One of the biggest challenges in golf is the terrain. Uneven lies are a constant part of the game, whether you are playing a mountain course or a rolling parkland layout. Mastering how to play from sloped ground can make a major difference in your ball striking and score.
Here is a breakdown of the four main types of uneven lies and how to adjust for each.
What Happens:
When the ball is above your feet, the clubface points left of target (for a right-handed golfer). The ball flight tends to move left and lower.
Adjustments:
• Grip down on the club to compensate for the slope.
• Aim slightly right to compensate for the leftward ball flight.
• Use a more upright posture and do not lean into the slope.
• Expect a shorter shot because of the flatter swing path.
Pro Tip:
Use a less than full tempo and be aware this lie can easily lead to pull hooks.
What Happens:
When the ball is below your feet, the clubface points right of target. The ball flight tends to move right.
Adjustments:
• Bend a little more at the knees and hips to reach the ball comfortably.
• Aim slightly left to account for the ball curving right.
• Maintain your spine angle throughout the swing.
• Use a less than full tempo to avoid losing balance.
Pro Tip:
This is one of the most difficult lies—prioritize contact over power.
3. Uphill Lie
What Happens:
This lie increases the loft to the club, launching the ball higher with reduced roll.
Adjustments:
• Align your shoulders with the slope, you will feel more weight and pressure on your trail foot.
• Use a less lofted club to compensate for the added height and reduced distance.
• Make a full turn but stay centered—do not sway into the slope.
Pro Tip:
Focus on low point in front of the ball, the slope helps elevate it naturally.
4.
What Happens:
This lie reduces the loft of the club, launching the ball lower with increased roll.
Adjustments:
• Align your shoulders with the slope—you will feel more weight and pressure on your lead foot.
• Use a more lofted club to compensate for the reduced height and increased distance.
Pro Tip:
Commit to the slope—trying to lift the ball leads to thin or chunked shots.
• Footing is everything—stability should always come before power.
• Club selection may change—depending on the trajectory and distance adjustments.
• Practice on slopes whenever you can.
• Trust the slope, not your instincts. Let the angle of your body and swing path work with the terrain.
Players who embrace and adjust to uneven lies are the ones who shoot lower scores. By making the subtle adjustments discussed above and practice from all types of terrain, you will gain a huge edge over golfers who only practice from flat lies.
Do not fear the slope—use it to your advantage.

2025 Summer Bocce Ball League Finals
Before we dive into Racquets news, we would be remiss not to celebrate the culmination of our 2025 Bocce Ball League. This season brought two first-time finalists to our championship night. After nine weeks of spirited play, the final match came down to Rolling Thunder (Captain: Melissa Franklin) versus Cito Ballers (Captain: Ryan Siemens). Neither team finished with the best record in their division, which meant they had to dig deep during the playoffs to earn their spot on the big stage. Along the way, both battled past former champions—proving their resilience, teamwork, and competitive spirit. When week 10 finally arrived, it was the Cito Ballers who rose to the occasion and earned the title of Birnam Wood 2025 Bocce Summer League Champions!
