BIRNAM BUZZ
WHAT’S INSIDE

Dear Members,
Jordan Sweeney, CCM, CSW General Manager and Chief Operating Officer
A quick update on the kitchen construction: things are moving right along! The walk-in refrigeration unit, office, and cooking lines have been placed and are currently being piped and installed. At first glance, the new kitchen already feels significantly larger! Chef Abdu, Louie, and the rest of the team are eager to get in there and start cooking. We remain on track to finish in time for Family Fright Night.
Speaking of Fright Night - this year’s theme is WICKED! Get ready to see Elphaba, Glinda, and of course Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and other familiar faces making appearances. We’re also kicking off the first phase of golf course work this month, starting with Hole #17. We’ll be draining the pond and beginning enhancements to improve water storage. The pond will be connected to Hole #9 to create a more efficient system for capturing and storing irrigation water, which will help conserve resources and reduce costs. For a more detailed timeline and expectations, please see Brian O’Laughlin’s article on the next page. And keep an eye out for a video announcement coming soon.
I’m especially excited about our first-ever Saddle Up Summer Party! We already have over 350 members signed up. This family-friendly event will feature pony rides, gold panning, archery, a kids’ DJ—and for the adults, a saloon and an incredible live band. It’s going to be a blast!
Bocce season has officially wrapped, and I want to thank
Scott Burton for organizing such a fun and engaging season for over 150 members! Big kudos also to Jeff Villano for his help.
We’ve also launched a fun new Club tradition—celebrating national food and beverage holidays! Last month, we marked National Ice Cream Day by serving treats to over 200 members and their families. This month, we’ll be celebrating National S’mores Day on August 10th from 2:00–4:00 PM at the firepits near the Bocce courts. Stop by for a complimentary s’more and a Coke!
And finally, we’re excited to announce a new Car Wash Service at the Club! Starting Saturday, August 2nd, this service will be available weekly on Saturdays. Sign up via the Club App—space is limited to 10 cars per week. Drop your keys at the front desk by 9:00 AM.
Thanks, and I’ll see you around the Club!
Brian O’Laughlin Director of Agronomy
As we step into August, we’re entering one of the busiest stretches of the year. It feels like we’re just now coming up for air after a packed tournament season, and yet we still have a few major events ahead—like the Men’s and Women’s Club Championships and the Lady MacBeth. On top of that, we’ve got some key course projects on the horizon. Let me break down what’s coming up.
As part of the broader golf course restoration effort, we’re getting a head start on rebuilding the pond on Hole #17. While just one piece of the long-term vision, it’s an important one—and we’re taking advantage of the dry weather to get it done now. Waiting too long could bring added challenges, especially with the rainy season ahead. Getting it done early also positions us well for the full-scale restoration and irrigation project scheduled for March 2026.
We’ll begin draining the pond later this month, giving it time to fully dry before construction starts in midSeptember. The project should take about six weeks, with most work happening during the weekdays. Hole #17 will be closed during this time, though there may be opportunities to open it on weekends if progress and safety allow.
The rebuild brings several benefits. The new design will increase water storage capacity, aligning with our plan to connect all of Birnam’s ponds to the irrigation system next year—enabling us to use more nonpotable, cost-effective water. The pond will be lined to
improve retention, and the added depth should help reduce algae growth. Aesthetically, the final result will be much cleaner, with crisp grass edging and an overall sharper look. Functionally, the pump motor will be buried to reduce noise, and an overflow system will help manage stormwater more effectively.
That said, there will be a few short-term inconveniences. Neighbors can expect some daytime noise, and the pond draining may bring temporary odors. There will also be brief traffic disruptions at the start and end of the project as equipment moves in and out.
A few quick asks for our members: please don’t attempt to enter the drained pond—the mud will be unstable and dangerous. When the hole is closed, kindly respect the closure and avoid trying to play through. And while we know these projects are interesting to watch, we ask that you don’t engage the crew during work— interruptions slow us down and increase costs.
Thanks in advance for your patience and cooperation as we take another step toward improving the course. Be on the lookout for a new video I’ll be releasing soon, which will provide more detail on the Hole #17 pond project and other upcoming initiatives.
As always, remember to fix your ball marks and fill your divots. I’ll see you out on the course!
Luis Flores
As we approach our Holiday Season,
I would like to remind you all that the Club’s Signature Events open for reservations 60 days prior to the event happening. The Upcoming Signature Event opening this month is our highly anticipated Family Fright Night. This event will open for reservations on August 29th, at 9:00am – so mark your calendars!
There’s been some great Buzz in the air regarding the recent “Mah Jongg for Beginner’s” class. As a reminder the Club has set aside the second and last Tuesday of each month for this social event. It has been well attended, and we are currently working on offering an instructor-led class in the near future.
As always, thank you for your support of the Club and we look forward to seeing you here soon!

Golf season is officially here.
Our weather has been absolutely beautiful, and the golf course is in fantastic condition. If you have not been out for a round of golf recently, I suggest you find time. It will be well worth it.
If you have not already heard, Top Gun VI took place on June 27th. It was an absolute blast. The tournament celebrated “Uncle” Bob Smith’s 75th birthday out on hole 7. He had life size cut outs and, of course, his specialty drink, “The Uncle Bob” was being served. Players took photos with his cutouts and sent those photos, along with birthday wishes throughout the day. There was a hole-in-one made by Will Geyer on hole 12. There was also a tournament taking place. The top 8 teams automatically qualified for the horse race, along with two wildcard teams. Those teams teed off on hole 17 while Trey Evans announced all aspects of their game, and maybe a little about things other than their game, if you know what I mean. The final three teams to make it to the finals were Nathan Ridgell and Spencer Foosherian, Will Jarve and Jack Rudolph , and Darrell Becker and Spenser Bruce It took one playoff hole to decide the championship. Nathan Ridgell and Spencer Foosherian outlasted Will Jarve and Jack Rudolph to take home the title of Top Guns.

Golf is a game of precision, and every great shot starts with a solid foundation. One of the most crucial—yet often overlooked—aspects of this foundation is posture. Whether you are a weekend golfer or a seasoned player, mastering proper golf posture can lead to more consistent swings, better ball contact, and improved overall performance.
Golf posture sets the stage for everything that follows in your swing. It influences your balance, swing plane, rotation, and even your ability to generate power.
Poor posture can lead to mishits, injuries, and frustrating rounds. On the other hand, a proper setup helps maintain consistency, efficiency, and accuracy.
Key Elements of Proper Golf Posture
1. Feet Position and Balance
Your feet should be shoulder-width apart for a mid-iron shot. This provides a stable base. For longer clubs like a driver, a slightly wider stance can help with balance and power. Ensure your weight is evenly distributed between the balls and heels of your feet.
2. Knees Slightly Flexed
Avoid locking your knees. A slight flex engages your lower body and helps maintain stability throughout the swing. Think of it as an athletic stance, ready for movement.
3. Spine Tilt and Back Angle
Tilt from your hips, not your waist. Your spine should remain straight—avoid hunching or excessive arching. A straight, neutral spine allows for proper shoulder turn and rotation, essential for generating speed and control.
4. Arm Position
Let your arms hang naturally from your shoulders. There should be a slight bend at the elbows,
Keep your chin up to allow room for shoulder rotation during the backswing, not buried in your chest.
Common Posture Mistakes
• Hunching Over the Ball: Causes restricted shoulder movement and a steep swing path.
• Standing Too Upright: Limits rotation and leads to loss of power.
• Too Much Knee Flex: Can lead to instability and inconsistent contact.
• Overreaching for the Ball: Disrupts your balance and posture alignment.
Tips to Improve Your Golf Posture
• Mirror Practice: Stand in front of a mirror and check your spine angle, knee flex, and arm position.
• Use Video: Record your setup and compare it to professional players or past swings.
• Fitness and Flexibility: Incorporate core and back exercises into your routine to maintain posture throughout your swing.
Great posture does not just look good—it creates a chain reaction for success throughout your swing. By developing a consistent, athletic, and balanced stance, you set yourself up for better mechanics, fewer injuries, and lower scores. As with all aspects of golf, improvement takes time and practice. Start with your posture, and you may find that other parts of your game fall into place naturally.
Want to take your swing to the next level? Focus on your foundation—focus on your posture.

It’s Glider Time! Gliders look kind of like frisbees, but are designed to bump up the intensity and fun for your fitness moves. You’ll find them in the Studio, which also has the perfect flooring plus the ballet barre if you need a sturdy support. Here are some leg and core exercises to incorporate into your next workout.
1) Reverse Lunge: Stand close to your support and place your right foot in the center of the Glider. Slide that foot back, keeping your chest up and left heel on the floor. Bend your left knee, keeping it over your ankle as you slide back, and focus on driving back up to standing using that left glute and hamstring. Do 20 reps and repeat on other side.
2) Speed Skate: Stand with feet parallel, Glider under the ball of your right foot. Slide the right foot diagonally backwards, while doing a single leg Squat with the left leg. Slide out and into work your inner and outer thighs. Do 40 reps and repeat on other side.
3) Mountain Climbers: Start in a Pushup position, with Gliders under your toes. Keep your shoulders and back stable and alternate legs, sliding your feet back and forth. This move works your upper body strength as well as your Core. Do 20 reps. Want more intensity? Cross your toes under to the opposite shoulder, rotating your lower torso.
