Richard De Schutter, President
I wish to bring the membership up to date on our $15 million project underway.
It’s hard to contemplate, but nearly a dozen truck load sized containers were hauled away over the past weeks containing all the then existing equipment, flooring, ceiling and walls from the former kitchen. Today we have a “clean palette” of flooring, with just over 3000 square feet awaiting installation of gleaming new equipment and HVAC. Following some modest start-up hiccups, the new mobile kitchen is in place and, with the help of our great staff (see below), is performing well. We’re on schedule to reopen the new kitchen in time for our upcoming fall and winter events just as planned. Stay tuned.
Even though heavy lifting on the golf course renovation is planned to begin next March, we are already underway with first steps. In Jordan Sweeney’s adjacent column, he describes work on the 17th hole about to begin in August. In addition, and in accordance with the golf course master plan, certain select trees are being taken down on the golf course side. In most cases, these are non-native trees which provide shade and consume water in unwanted places. Golfers will notice some subtle changes but, in total, no more than about 30 trees are earmarked for removal taking us back to the original design of architect, Robert Trent Jones, Sr.
Still on schedule for next year. Parking currently is tight but will improve once the kitchen workmen spaces on the main lot are reopened in October.
I might add that the Construction Oversight Committee under the chairmanship of Steve Jones is doing a terrific job with project management. Recall the budget of $15 million was arrived at and approved prior to the current administration’s plans to sharply increase tariffs from certain regions. Some nifty workarounds by the committee, including switching sources of supply from country to country depending upon tariffs, have yielded real savings from what would have otherwise occurred. For example, HDPE pipe for the extensive irrigation makeover is now slated to come from the United Arab Emirates rather than China.
Finally, a word about our employee associates who work every day to make our club special. While many of our ongoing changes such as the kitchen switch may appear seamless to members, such
is hardly the case for our associates who strive for excellence. The effort being put forth by those who prepare food in the galley and those who serve the meals with smiles on their faces is extraordinary. They, collectively, are a big part of the reason that Jordan is able to report in his column that Birnam Wood was once again awarded the Distinguished Club award for the second year by Forbes travel.
I’m sure they would appreciate hearing a “well done” next time at the 19th Hole, Veranda, or Packing House.
See you at the club…
Jordan Sweeney, CCM, CSW General Manager and Chief Operating Officer
You may have noticed the shiny green pins that many of our staff members are proudly wearing. These are Distinguished Club pins, a prestigious designation awarded only to select clubs that meet the highest standards. I am thrilled to share that Birnam Wood Golf Club has once again been recognized as a Distinguished Club by both Forbes and Boardroom Magazine — our second consecutive year receiving this honor.
The evaluation team was particularly impressed by several aspects of our Club, including the beautiful improvements to our golf course with the overseeding of ryegrass. They also highlighted our exciting upcoming renovations of both the kitchen and golf course facilities. However, the feedback that made me most proud was their recognition of our outstanding service staff. As one evaluator put it, “You have hospitality running through your employees’ veins” — an incredible compliment and a true testament to the culture we’ve built here at Birnam Wood.
In the spirit of fostering hospitality and excellence, you may have seen a new friendly face around the Club. We recently welcomed our hospitality intern, Hero Fike. Hero is a recent high school graduate with a passion for the industry, and she’s gaining valuable hands-on experience working alongside our talented team.
In addition to the Distinguished Club honor, I’m pleased to update you on the progress of our golf course restoration project. Tree work has begun, and we are preparing for the upcoming work on Hole 17 later this summer. Our plan is to drain, line, and restore the lake on Hole 17 in late August-September to ensure completion before the rainy season arrives. The lakes on Holes 14 and 9 have already been lined and require no further work. Once the full restoration timeline is finalized, I will create a video update to share all the details with you.
Looking ahead, our Member-Guest Robert Trent Jones Invitational is coming up at the end of this month, and the golf course is in fantastic condition. I am also excited to welcome many of our out-of-town members who will be joining us in the cottages this summer. We have a full calendar of events planned for your enjoyment, including our highly anticipated Summer Party on Friday, August 15th, which will feature a Western theme this year. You won’t want to miss it — we are pulling out all the stops!
Thank you all for your continued support. I look forward to seeing you around the Club this summer!
Warm regards,
Jordan

Our weather has been absolutely beautiful, and the golf course is in fantastic condition. If you have not been out for a round of golf recently, I suggest you find time. It will be well worth it.
As high season arrives for golf, I have an important announcement to make. The Golf Committee has decided to retain a company, Cap Patrol, to help with handicap tracking for our members. The system will be tracking all score posting, home and away, tournament results and daily tee sheet monitoring. Players who accumulate a certain “Cap Score” will have an index reduction for all Birnam Wood events for a period of one month. Each month the information will be reviewed. Look for more information to come. Their software does come with an App for members to use that has so much great information.
July means it is time for Signature men’s event, the Robert Trent Jones Classic. This is our Annual Member-Guest. This year will be an incredible celebration and a perfect time to show off Birnam Wood at it best. The format will be five 9-Hole Matches over Friday and Saturday. The event will kick off with a Par 3 Tournament on Thursday, followed by our unforgettable stag dinner. The event will conclude on Saturday evening with a celebration of all the winners and a party that will

create incredible memories.
Ladies, your member-guest is not far off. The committee has been working hard to create an extraordinary event for you and your guests on September 11th and 12th. The registration for this event will open July 1st. Get your guest and foursome put together for another experience you will not want to miss.

1. Consistency:
One of the biggest benefits of focusing on the 60/40 rule is the consistency it fosters. With the correct ratio, you are less likely to have a jerky, overly aggressive stroke or overly passive one. By splitting the stroke into defined portions, you give yourself a clear guide to follow every time you address a putt.
2. Better Distance Control:
As the backswing dictates the speed is in the stroke, it is crucial for distance control. With the 60/40 balance, you will develop a sense of the speed needed to apply for different distances. This helps you avoid over- or under-hitting putts, which is a frequent problem among golfers.
3. Smooth Rhythm:
When you follow the 60/40 rule, you create a natural rhythm between the backswing and follow-through. The longer backswing helps you build energy, while the shorter followthrough ensures you release that energy smoothly and evenly, keeping the stroke fluid and comfortable.
4. Reduced Tension:
Focusing on this ratio can help reduce unnecessary tension in your stroke. If you have an extraordinarily long backswing but a short follow-through (or vice versa), you may begin to tense up to compensate. The 60/40 split allows your body to move naturally, preventing any overcompensation or excess tension during the stroke.
How to Implement the 60/40 Rule into Your Putting Stroke
Now that you understand the mechanics and benefits of the 60/40 rule, let us look at how to incorporate it into your putting routine:
Step 1: Focus on a Balanced Backswing
• Start by ensuring your backswing is smooth, controlled, and
not rushed. The longer backswing should feel comfortable.
• Avoid a quick, jerky backswing, as this will affect your ability to control the ball’s roll.
Step 2: Maintain a Relaxed Follow-Through
• The follow-through should be fluid but not overly extended. Focus on maintaining the same speed as your backswing to keep the stroke balanced.
• After contacting the ball, let the putter continue its natural arc, but do not let the follow-through extend too far.
Step 3: Practice with Distance Control Drills
• Try practicing with various distances (3 feet, 6 feet, 9 feet, etc.) to become more comfortable with the length of backswing and follow-through required for each putt.
• Set up a metronome or use a rhythmic technique to help time your backswing and follow-through. This will allow you to find the right feeling for the 60/40 balance.
Step 4: Focus on Rhythm and Tempo
• While the 60/40 split is important, so is the rhythm of the stroke. Maintain an even tempo throughout both parts of the stroke. The backswing should feel like a natural build-up of energy, and the follow-through should be the release of that energy in a smooth motion.
Final Thoughts
The 60/40 rule is a simple yet effective guideline to help golfers improve their putting stroke. By ensuring a longer, controlled backswing and a focused, shorter follow-through, you will improve your ability to control both the speed and accuracy of your putts. The result is less variability, precise putting with better distance control.
Remember that the key to this technique is not forcing the stroke but allowing your natural rhythm to guide the process. With practice and a steady focus on this balanced stroke, the 60/40 rule can become a cornerstone of your putting game.
JULY 2025 15
Brian O’Laughlin Director of Agronomy
As we enter the month of July, we truly embrace the essence of summer with its warm weather and vigorous growing conditions. This time of year, when the turf reaches its peak growth potential, our agronomy team shifts focus more toward maintenance and less toward projects.
With our spring efforts behind us—including a smooth and successful aerification—we are now fully committed to daily maintenance. The summer months demand consistency: keeping up with mowing, staying ahead of disease pressure, and doing our best to work around the limitations of our aging irrigation system.
The irrigation system, now over two decades old, continues to show signs of strain. Its inefficiencies are especially noticeable in our new ryegrass rough, where poor coverage and outdated technology make uniform moisture management a constant challenge. Despite this, the course is currently in excellent condition—a reflection of the team’s hard work, attention to detail, and strategic water management.
In addition to regular maintenance, we’re preparing the course for a busy tournament schedule ahead. Fine-tuning details like green speeds, bunker consistency, and overall playability takes careful coordination, and our team is up for the challenge.
Lastly, a big shout-out to our crew. Their dedication, early mornings, and relentless attention to detail are what make these playing conditions possible. Please give them a wave or a thank you when you see them out on the course, especially during these hot, demanding summer days.
in helping us maintain high-quality conditions. Fix your ball marks, fill divots, avoid repeated cart wear patterns, follow all directional signage, and park carts at least 15 yards from greens and tees. Use the painted green lines as your guide whenever possible.
Thank you for your continued support and attentiveness. We’re proud of where the course stands today and we’re working hard to keep it that way all summer long.
Thursday, July 24 to Saturday, July 26 th Format: Five 9-Hole Matches. The overall champion will be decided by the Championship Horse Race.

Summer is in full swing, and member participation in sports has been nothing short of fantastic! Whether it’s Croquet, Tennis, Pickleball, or Bocce, our courts and lawns are alive with energy and camaraderie.
The level of play in our Summer Bocce League continues to rise each week as teams get more competitive and skilled. Meanwhile, our everpopular Croquet Golf events remain a favorite—and a sellout every time! With only 8 spots available per session, they go fast, so be sure to stay tuned to club promotions for your chance to join in.
We love seeing our members active, engaged, and enjoying the spirit of friendly competition. Here’s to more summer fun at Birnam Wood!
Summer Bocce League has been a Huge Hit with 155 players!
Each Wednesday evening, the energy at the bocce courts is electric as over 150 members gather to compete, connect, and enjoy the game. With longer summer days, the backdrop of our golf course and the stunning Santa Barbara mountains make the experience even more memorable.
The level of competition continues to rise—thanks in part to the many players who have taken lessons from Scott. The improvement on the courts is noticeable, and the excitement is contagious!
Don’t forget - you can easily reserve court times using our club app. Whether you’re playing in the league or just practicing your rolls, there’s no better way to spend a summer evening at Birnam Wood.
I think summer is officially here! June has brought us some warm weather and beautiful days. Our first week of Junior Tennis Camp had 11 campers which was a good turnout. The kids had a lot of fun and learned some new skills. The next camp will be July 14th-17th so there still is some time to sign up.
Come out and enjoy a game on our newly resurfaced hard courts. There is still some grit or stick on the court so please be a little more aware of your footing. Otherwise, the courts play beautifully at a medium speed. As a reminder, only non-marking shoes are allowed on the tennis and pickleball courts. Running shoes or high-profile walking shoes will not be permitted. Please remind your children and guests of this rule.
On Monday, June 23rd, a group of members and employees battled it out on the pickleball courts. There were a lot of laughs, great shot making and pizza to go around. I will be sure to schedule another event soon.
New Women’s 3.5 to 4.0 Doubles Clinics are forming. Come out Monday and/or Wednesday morning from 9:00AM to 10:30am for a fun, high intensity clinic that will include drills, strategy, and playing. Please invite your guests.
If you would like to see other Women’s Clinics, please let me know.
We are in the process of forming Women’s Interclub teams for the 20252026 season. Our C team will participate in the league again. If you are a new player or getting back into the game and would like some friendly competition, we would love to have you join the team. Remember tennis and pickleball go hand in hand. If you are a 3.5 to 4.0 level player, we are looking for ladies for a potential B team. Please contact Jeff immediately.
Have your children and their friends participate in Birnam Wood’s fun Golf & Tennis Camp. Three weeks will be offered this summer. You can participate in Golf/Tennis, Golf only or Tennis only options. The camp runs Monday
– Thursday 11:00am-1:00pm (golf), 1:00pm-1:30pm (lunch), 1:30pm-3:30pm (tennis). Please contact the Golf or Tennis Shop to sign up.
Session 1: June 16th-19th
Session 2: July 14th-17th
Session 3: August 4th-7th
Another option I’m offering this Summer is a “CREATE A CAMP”. For ADULTS & CHILDREN. Create your own Tennis, Pickleball, or combo camp. Choose the days and times that work best for you and your friends. Please contact me for more details. I look forward to working with you and your children and their friends over the Summer.
FRIENDLY REMINDERS
Please make sure you and your guests wear non-marking shoes on the courts. Please DO NOT draw shapes or words on the wind screens. Joy DuMay, Fitness Director
We all love “Fitness by the Numbers”, right? “The Five-Minute Abs”, 3/2 Interval Training (3 minutes hard, 2 minutes easy), “75/75” (75 minutes of exercise a day for 75 days). How about a fun way to make a positive impact on your mental and physical health at the same time? I like to use the “5-4-3-2-1 Focus” on a Walk or Run.
Instead of trying to distract yourself with a podcast or drilling through lists of things to get done, try to experience where you are, in the moment. This not only expands time but really helps you feel your body and allows you to connect with nature and your surroundings. Here’s the way to do it:
5) Name 5 things you can see. Too simple? How about five different trees, roof styles or red objects?
4) Name 4 things you can hear. My favorite is to identify birds by their song. The free Merlin Bird ID app is super helpful for this.
3) Name 3 things you can feel. How do your toes feel in your shoes? Can you feel the breeze on your cheek? What does that plant feel like?
2) Name 2 things you can smell. Is there a rose bush or geranium on your walk? Are the folks at the end of the block having pancakes and bacon for breakfast? It’s interesting what you can find out when you use your senses!
1) Name 1 thing to feel grateful for. How wonderful it is to be able to “Walk the Wood” in Birnam, or put your toes in the sand at the beach, or to see the sun finally burn away the fog of the morning. Try the “5-4-3-2-1 Focus”, and put a smile on your face at the end with a moment to reflect on all you are able to experience.
Come join your fellow members in our beautiful and private Fitness Studio. We look forward to moving and energizing with you!
