BIRNAM BUZZ

Richard De Schutter, President
I don’t recall exactly when but sometime about three years ago I was chairing a routine finance committee meeting at the club. As the meeting was drawing to a close, General Manager, Jordan Sweeney said in a line reminiscent of Police Chief Brody in the movie Jaws...“We’re gonna need a bigger kitchen”.
The committee’s reaction was less than enthusiastic as frankly, up until that point, not much attention had been paid to the kitchen and there was certainly no appetite for an unbudgeted multimillion dollar project. Still, Jordan persisted in later meetings and we all ended up taking a tour not much different from what he shared recently with the membership(Click here).
At that point, it became clear we needed to upgrade the kitchen and the only way to do it was to cut out the old and replace with the new. So two questions immediately presented themselves ... How do we fund it and how do we do it?
The funding question got dealt with by making the kitchen renovation part of the bigger $15 million project recently approved by the board with broad membership support. The other question of “how to do it” was trickier.”
Here Jordan and his team went to work coming up with a plan for creation of a mobile kitchen which would allow for
total shut down and time for renovation of the primary kitchen. The challenge was formidable with the goal being a seamless transition maintaining the culinary standards that chef Abdu has set and the memberships have come to expect. The proposal was to do this by linking together five mobile trailers of differing functions such as refrigeration, storage and cooking capacities over a wide range of menus .... and oh, by the way, being capable of serving many hundreds of meals for a single event or handle multiple dining venues for a period of up to 6 months.
The plan on paper looked doable, but as anyone who has been involved in an engineering project knows, the work really begins in the field and the planning bugs quickly appear. It’s one thing to move mobile trailers in place but it’s something else again to make them work efficiently and needing to pass the high standards of a final Health Department inspection to become operational.
Fortunately for the club, our Director of Facilities, Isreal (Izzy) Ruiz rode to the rescue. Izzy is the guy who somehow magically transforms the club entry into a flower show for Mother’s Day or creates a wooden boat overnight for a terrace seafood event.
Given this challenge, he worked 10 straight days building a network of safety walks, railing, overhead roofs, and all the necessary connections bringing together a hodgepodge into a smooth operating kitchen. Even the Health Department was impressed and so commented as they gave their final green light.
We are now about a month into the transition and so far, so good. In fact, it’s interesting to note the club this past month had a revenue record month for food and beverage. Kudos to the staff for all the hard work and planning that makes it possible. Further I’m pleased to report we’re on schedule to reopen, by then, our marvelously restored kitchen in time for the Fall and Winter events.
See you at the club.

As we welcome June, the energy at Birnam Wood Golf Club is unmistakably vibrant, with summer activities heating up and our community enjoying the longer days.
The Summer Bocce League has Begun!
Our Summer Bocce League began on Wednesday, May 28th and it is looking to be a great season! Matches will take place every Wednesday evening through the end of July. Whether you’re a seasoned bocce competitor or just looking for a relaxing evening among friends, come down to the courts! You don’t need to be on a team to enjoy the fun—grab a drink, socialize, and cheer on players under the warm evening skies.
It’s been one month since we transitioned to our temporary portable kitchen while construction is underway in the main facility. While we have faced a few hiccups, operations are running smoothly and as anticipated. We want to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to all of our members for your patience and understanding during this time. Your support keeps us moving forward with optimism and enthusiasm.
Thanks to a couple of weeks of beautiful weather, our recent golf course aerification process proceeded without a hitch. Even better, we were able to reopen the course ahead of schedule - a welcome surprise for our golfers eager to return to pristine fairways and greens. A big thank you to our grounds team for their hard work!
Here’s to a joyful and sun-filled June at Birnam Wood!

Birnam Wood is your ‘home away from home’ and we strive to make it an enjoyable and relaxing place to spend time. We hope all of our members will relax at the Club and enjoy a break from the busyness of life.
Your friendly reminder of the month is that cell phone use for audible conversations is discouraged. If you need to take an important call, please do so in the locker room or, if it is going to be a long call, please head to your car, or the Birnam Library (if available).
Thank you for helping us keep Birnam a work-free and restful place – and remember to share this reminder with your guests.

The golf course aerification is complete. We want to thank you for your patience and understanding while we restricted golf cart usage. It was necessary to aid in the fairways’ recovery. The golf course will be back to the immaculate shape we have become accustomed to in time for our upcoming tournament season.
Speaking of tournaments, we have a big event coming at the end of June, Top Gun VI. The field is sold out and players are already looking forward to a great time. Our ladies have their Special Guest Day on Friday, June 13th. I encourage our lady members to create a foursome and play in this wonderful event, as our BWWGA brings Paris to Birnam Wood. We also have our first Jump Up of the season on Sunday, June 8th. This event is for mixed foursomes. Members can invite 1 or 2 guests or create a foursome with all members. Guest fees are waived for this event. The shotgun start is 1:00pm with dinner for all players after golf.
The Robert Trent Jones Classic is just over one month away. This signature event will take place July 24th to July 26th. This is our biggest event of the year. The format will be 5 nine-hole matches. The field will consist of 60 member-guest teams. At this time, there are a few spots still open. Sign-up on the App as soon as you can. This is definitely a can’t miss event here at Birnam Wood.

Finally, I want to congratulate our McLean Member-Member winners. This was a spectacular two-day event celebrating our club with our members. The horse race wrapped up day as 24 teams opted into this alternate shot spectacle. After four holes, Chris Gregoire and Rob Crane stood alone as champions. Will Jarve and Mike Lopus finished second and Andy Gifford and Jim Lodas finished third. Both our Gross and Overall champions led wire to wire. Brycen Wagner and Crosby Slaught shot 63 then 66 gross to win the Gross Championship. And, the Overall Champions were Austin Muller and Kelly Vandever. After day 1, they were tied for the lead at 61.4. They followed that up with low round of the day in the better ball format at 63. That was good enough for a two-stroke victory.

The 60/40 rule—is a concept that suggests your putting stroke is 60% backswing and 40% follow-through—has become a popular approach for golfers looking to refine their stroke and improve consistency.
Understanding the 60/40 Rule
The 60/40 rule proposes that the putting stroke should have a longer backswing (60%) compared to the follow-through (40%). In other words, you focus on a controlled, deliberate backswing that gathers energy and sets up a smooth, balanced follow-through.
Why is this Split Important?
Both the backswing and follow-through play distinct but complementary roles in creating a controlled, accurate putt.
1. Backswing (60%):
o The backswing is the start of the motion and is vital for generating the correct amount of energy.
o A longer, more deliberate backswing allows the golfer to feel the rhythm of the stroke and set up a smoother transfer of energy to the ball.
o The backswing provides the necessary speed for the ball to roll the desired distance.
2. Follow-Through (40%):
o The follow-through is crucial for controlling the direction and accuracy.
o A shorter follow-through ensures that the golfer does not over-hit the ball or loses the delicate touch needed for fine-tuning the speed.
o The follow-through should be smooth and fluid, emphasizing stability and direction. It is about precision, not power.
By maintaining a 60/40 split, golfers can strike a balance between generating enough power on the backswing and maintaining control and accuracy through the follow-through. This allows for a more repeatable and reliable putting stroke.
Why Focus on Backswing and Follow-Through Proportions?
The 60/40 rule may seem like an arbitrary division of the stroke, but the reasoning behind this balance is rooted in the need for both power and precision. Golfers tend to overcompensate in one area or the other: golfers might take a tooquick, too-short backswing and struggle to control their follow-through, while others might overdo the follow-through, losing the necessary energy and speed to get the ball to the hole.
Here is why focusing on the backswing and follow-through proportions can lead to better results:
• Power Control: A longer backswing gives you the time and space needed to generate the proper power, but too long a backswing can create inconsistency. By focusing on a backswing that is 60% of the total stroke, you get a comfortable range of motion without overloading the stroke.
• Accuracy and Smoothness: A 40% follow-through is enough to ensure the ball travels on its intended line and at the right speed. If the follow-through is too long, you may lose control of the stroke and overshoot the target. Conversely, a shorter follow-through helps you maintain a smooth fluid motion, crucial for making precise putts.
Check back next month for Part 2 of The 60/40 Rule in Putting: Mastering the Perfect Backswing and Follow Through.
JUNE 2025 15
Brian O’Laughlin Director of Agronomy
June is here, and aerification is officially behind us.
What a difference compared to last year! In 2024, we barely saw the sun for five weeks straight. Cool, damp, and foggy days made the process extremely difficult. Wet sand is nearly impossible to work into the turf canopy—it tends to cake and smear on top, smothering warm-season grass in conditions that favor cool-season varieties. As a result, the grass’ growth potential was reduced to nearly nothing.
This year, we got a completely different story. Not a single day of “May Gray” hit us during the process. Instead, we were gifted warm, dry, sunny days—ideal conditions for Bermuda grass. The sand dried out so well that most of it was worked in by the aerifiers alone. After a quick drag, it was nearly invisible. Mother Nature did us a huge favor, and it made all the difference.
We finished ahead of schedule, and more importantly, the final results are fantastic. Recovery is already underway and also tracking ahead of schedule.
I really can’t say enough about how proud I am of the crew and their efforts. Aerification is a tough, dusty, and exhausting job—one that’s dreaded every year. While the change of pace might seem fun at first, the long hours and monotonous work can wear anyone down. But the team stuck with it. They stayed focused and completed the entire course ahead of schedule. With the weather on our side, the results are some of the best we’ve seen.
cart traffic during this critical healing stage. It made a real difference in supporting turfgrass health and recovery.
I’m happy to report that cart restrictions will also be lifted ahead of schedule—on June 3rd. Thank you all for your patience, cooperation, and continued support.
We are making the necessary moves to protect and elevate Birnam Wood’s playing conditions, and it’s already paying off. The commitment from our staff, committee, and membership is what keeps this course exceptional—and it’s that shared dedication that will continue to set us apart.
As always, please remember to fill your divots and fix your ball marks. I’ll see you on the course!
I also want to acknowledge and thank those who complied with the temporary golf cart restrictions. The Green Committee made the right call by supporting my recommendation to limit

Greetings from Athletics!
Birnam Wood is rolling into Bocce season, and it promises to be a fun time for all involved. Reservations are recommended for any team or individual practice sessions. Whether on the golf course, tennis or pickleball courts, remember to remain hydrated. Even the bocce courts get quite warm, so please remember to hydrate and use plenty of sunscreen.
Hydration fuels your body from the inside; sunscreen protects it from the outside. Together, they keep you healthy, energized, and protected in daily life and during outdoor activities. So, the next time you join us on the croquet field… be sure you are using sunscreen, wearing your BIG hat and drinking water before you are thirsty. If you wait until thirst drives you to drink, you’ve waited too long!
“May Gray” appeared early this year, but it didn’t keep us from holding our popular Cinco de Mayo Dinks & Drinks. We had 16 players with a waiting list! Thanks to everyone who participated. I look forward to the next one on Saturday, August 16th.
Hard courts 5 and 6 are scheduled to be resurfaced from Monday, June 2nd to Monday June 9th. Please plan your games accordingly. All clinics and lessons will be moved to the pickleball or clay courts. Please contact Scott or Jeff with any questions or to reserve a tennis court in the pickleball area.
The Women’s Interclub season has ended. I want to thank all the ladies on the Women’s C team for participating. It’s a big commitment as the season runs from September through May. My goal is to continue to build the Women’s Interclub teams here at Birnam Wood. Next year we hope to add a B team.
I want to especially thank Karen Trogan for helping me captain the team this year. Here is a list of the ladies who played on our Biram Wood C team: Brittany Arntz, Sarah Borgers, Kristen Bruce, Dolores Gillmore, Renee Haas, Randy Leher, Jill Mazursky, Alicia McFarlane, Anna Mehrabi, Judy Smith, Ellie Sulger, Anne Towbes, and Karen Trogan. Again, I can’t thank you enough for your commitment to the team. I’m looking forward to next year.

~That’s the news from Athletics
Joy DuMay, Fitness Director
Imagine that you are at a resort and your friends want to go scuba diving. They hand you a wetsuit to put on, and too late you realize that it is way too small, but whatever, you struggle and get that thing pulled on and zipped up. Then your buddies tell you that they want to go for a run instead. Now. And since you don’t have time to change, you just get your running shoes on and stand up and try to run as best you can.
What would that feel like? Your joints would feel bound up, your muscles would not be able to lengthen easily, and your body would basically freeze up. Now imagine that you take off that wetsuit and are able to move in a full range of motion. What a relief!
This story is an analogy for those of you who need to do some self-myofascial release. Fascia is connective tissue that envelops your entire muscular and skeletal system. It’s the same thing as that white film that surrounds a chicken breast after you’ve taken the skin off.
If your fascia is “tight” like that too-small wetsuit, you will have restricted your joint and muscle movement, leading to not only discomfort but possible injuries. The solution? Release that fascia! One of the best ways is to get a massage: you know how great that feels, right? But for most of us, we need to get some myofascial release at least three times a week, if not every day.
The solution? Foam Rolling! To start, try the following exercises. Technique? I like to “Mow the Lawn”, where you think of each muscle as the Lawn, and Mow back and forth on a small section about five times until you feel a release. Then move onto the next section of that muscle.
Painful? Yes, especially when you first start to Roll. Just keep
breathing and hold until one spot until you feel the muscle relax. Make sure that you keep your shoulders stable during the leg moves and support the head during the back move so that there is no strain in the neck.
Glute Roll: Cross right leg over left thigh and roll on that right glute two inches at a time. Spend at least three minutes as you move across the muscle, then switch sides.
Outer Thigh/ IT Band Roll: Cross the left leg over the right and place left foot on the ground, extending the right leg. Roll at the top of the outer thigh five times, then move down five inches and roll that section, etc. etc. as you move down the leg to the knee. Repeat on other side.
Back Roll: Lie down with the roller under your lower back. Support your head with your hands (do not let your head drop back), lift your hips off the floor and control the move with your feet. Roll up and down five times on a five-inch section of your lower back, then move up the back and repeat. When you get to your upper back, tuck your elbow in and roll between your shoulder blades. Do not roll your neck!
