Richard De Schutter, President
January was a challenging month.
It began with the sad news of our immediate past president, Stan Anderson, passing away early in the month. With Stan’s loss barely digested, we heard disturbing reports of the multiple Los Angeles fires and their tragic impact on numerous nearby communities which included evacuations and home losses for some of Birnam Wood members.
The club has done what it can to assist those affected. Cottages quickly filled up with dislocated members at a 25% pricing discount. Club members have been generous with donations and some have opened their homes taking in displaced families.
Despite the unexpected difficulties we have faced during the month, life does move on. As January comes to a close, we can already see the resiliency of those affected in the Los Angeles area as they make plans to rebuild their neighborhoods and sense of community. It looks to be a long road not unlike what we faced here following our 2018 fire and debris flow. However, time and our endless community spirit have allowed the club and surrounding community to rebound. Look at all the positive developments that have occurred at Birnam Wood and Montecito in the seven years that have passed.
Here at the club we continue with the capital improvement project that Stan Anderson envisioned during his watch as Club President and which now is awaiting approval by the homeowner membership.
Yes, January 2025 came with rough spots, but better times lie ahead.
Jordan Sweeney, CCM, CSW General Manager and Chief Operating Officer
This month, I want to take a moment to celebrate the amazing team that makes Birnam Wood Golf Club such a special place. At the heart of our Club is a shared commitment to excellence, and it’s our incredible employees who bring that spirit to life every day. Since 2020, we’ve been honoring one exceptional team member each year as our Employee of the Year. This tradition allows us to highlight individuals whose dedication, positivity, and hospitality go above and beyond.
Our very first Employee of the Year in 2020 was Cathy Kendrick, the warm and welcoming face of the Club. With 23 years of experience, Cathy is truly the heart of our front desk operations. She not only keeps everything running smoothly, from managing Cottage reservations to greeting members, but she’s also a favorite among our four-legged visitors. Cathy knows all the dogs in our community by name and keeps a stash of treats handy for their daily stop at the desk. Her care and attention to detail make her an invaluable part of our team.
In 2021, Rodrigo Hernandez, our now 1st Assistant Superintendent, earned the title. Rodrigo has been with the Club for 17 years and stepped up to the role of 1st Assistant Superintendent following the passing of the late Will Soto. His expertise in irrigation management, chemical application, and daily crew leadership keeps our grounds in pristine condition. Rodrigo is a dedicated father and, in the words of our Course Superintendent Brian O’Laughlin, “just a real good dude.”
The 2022 Employee of the Year was Ryan Whitmore, who has been a key member of our cart services team for over 5 years. Ryan is the kind of person who gets things done with a smile. He’s always professional, hospitable, and eager to exceed expectations. Members consistently praise his positive attitude and dedication to ensuring every detail is perfect.
In 2023, Robert Espinoza from our maintenance team took home the honor. If you’ve ever seen someone fixing a door or painting a wall around the Club, chances are it was Robert. Despite being with us for only 2 years and 6 months, Robert has already become Israel’s lead assistant and brings what I like to call “good energy” to every task. His upbeat personality is infectious, and he’s a favorite among both staff and members.
Finally, at our Employee Christmas Party this past December, we proudly announced our 2024 Employee of the Year: Willie Poindexter. Willie has been a part of the Club for 5 years
serving as a Security Officer. Always smiling and ready to help, Willie embodies everything we strive for at Birnam Wood. Here’s just one story that shows why Willie stands out:
When we were conducting interviews for a new Director of Security, Willie was working at the gatehouse that day. Every single candidate mentioned how Willie made them feel special as they arrived. Not only did they remember his warm demeanor, but all of them also remembered his name. That’s Willie. His ability to make people feel welcome sets the tone for the Birnam Wood experience from the very first interaction.
These past five honorees share a common thread: hospitality. They love making people feel special, and they embody the values that define our Club. Please join me in congratulating Willie on a well-deserved honor and in celebrating the remarkable team that makes Birnam Wood Golf Club what it is.
As you see these incredible employees around the Club, I

It has been a true pleasure to welcome so many outstanding new members to the Club over the past year! While we have lost some beloved long-time members, the new members joining the Club are exceptional and great additions to the community. There is still a waitlist for membership, and the Membership Committee continues to work hard to meet and vet all new candidates.
If you have a friend or colleague who might be interested in membership at Birnam Wood, consider bringing them to a Pop-up bar or TGIF event. These monthly events are fun and a great way to introduce prospective members to the Club. There are a few changes recently approved by the Membership Committee and the Board of Directors that we wanted to share with you.
The first is the dues and fees increase that took place at the beginning of the fiscal year. The new initiation fees are:
• Corporate: $155,000
• Resident: $125,000
• Social: $72,000
• Non-Resident: $72,000
• Intermediate: $45,000
• Jr. Golf: $25,000
The second change is that Birnam Wood now has an official cancellation policy. This new policy states that: “Members of all classes (excluding Corporate Members) may voluntarily resign their membership by delivering to the Club a notice of resignation in writing. Such a notice of resignation shall be effective on the last day of the month following the month in which it is delivered.”
Birnam Wood is a beautiful place, but it is the members that make it so special. Thank you for your continued support of the Club.

I wanted to begin my article by expressing my most heartfelt condolences to everyone who has been impacted by the Southern California wildfires. The golf operation and our staff are here to assist with anything you might need. Whether it be clothes, replacement clubs, or just a friendly face to have a conversation with, we are here for you.
January is a fairly quiet month for golf. However, Men’s Team play has begun. The first home and home matches are in the books. Our first match was played away at Saticoy Club on Saturday, January 11th. It was not the results the team had hoped for. The final score was 34-14 in favor of Saticoy. Nat Schulhof and Seth Epstein were our shining stars. They were the only team to win all six points.
Saturday, January 18th, was the team’s chance to even the score. Unfortunately, the results were not what we had hoped for, or expected. Saticoy Club was able to come to Birnam Wood and go home with a road victory by the score of 26-22. The Men’s Team has four more matches to try and qualify for the SCGA Playoffs. We will most likely need to run the tables. I will have the final update of the season in my next article. Keep working hard gentlemen.
Ladies’ Team will begin their team season in February. Look for updates on their results in future articles.

One myth in golf is to fold the trail arm immediately into your body. However, this is a “Death Move” I recommend avoiding.
Although instructors have taught this in the past, if you watch any tour player, you will see this is simply not true.
Folding your trail arm occurs at the beginning of the takeaway when a player keeps their trail arm/elbow connected to their body. See photo below. Doing so will create a club path that is too inside forcing you to cast and lunge to swing the club in the downswing. This move eliminates leverage and power.
To demonstrate why this is a “Death Move,” the next time you are at the practice facility try throwing a golf ball with your trail arm connected to your side. You are going to see that you are not able to throw the ball far.
To increase your leverage and power, swing the club on the correct path, and create a wider backswing arc. Let your trail arm/elbow move away from your body. See photo below.
Schedule a lesson today and we can improve your trail arm technique to improve your ball striking and increase your distance in 2025.

lacks coverage and uniformity. It’s especially apparent this winter, as we’re finding it difficult to water evenly, with wet spots and dry spots all over the golf course. The lack of accuracy in this old system proves to be a significant challenge when winter watering requires precise control. It’s easier to mask in the summertime when we’re using more water and temperatures are warm.
Good thing we have the option to update the irrigation system if the golf course restoration project is approved. The course desperately needs it, along with other improvements. If you haven’t seen the restoration video we did yet, please check it out on the app and learn why the golf course needs this project.
It has absolutely flown by, with the holidays followed by the birth of my daughter, Madison Grace O’Laughlin. Originally, her due date was January 29th, but she decided to say hello a couple of weeks early and joined our family on Tuesday, January 14th. If you saw less of me around the club last month—that’s why! We are ecstatic about welcoming Madi into the world and the entire Birnam Wood family. We can’t think of a greater place to raise our children!
It’s been a chaotic transition going from two to three children, all under the age of six. But everyone is doing very well, and we are happy and healthy. I am excited to fully step back into my role at the Club. Some time off was much needed to help the family, but I’m eager to spend more time on the course and get back into action.
February is here—wow! We are officially turning the corner back into spring growing conditions. I’ve always said that Valentine’s Day is the marker. After Valentine’s Day, the turf begins to wake up and start growing again. It’s been a long, DRY winter. We really could have used more rain, and I’m still praying and hopeful we will receive some later spring rain. It would benefit us so much to get two to three good rain events, especially as we continue to establish our rye grass rough.
We can see exactly where this outdated irrigation system
As always, please remember to fill your divots and fix your ball marks. I’ll see you out on the course!

News from the Courts & Head Pro Jeff Villano 2025 has started off with a BANG. The New Year’s Tennis Mixer, two Women’s Interclub matches, and the Pickleball Club Championships created a lot of activity on the courts.
The Tennis Mixer was full, with 16 players who mixed around on the clay and hard courts. Everyone had a blast while enjoying food and drink afterwards.
Check out this good-looking group.
Our Women’s C team hosted Elings and Knollwood in January. Both matches were close, and the ladies had a lot of fun. Please come out and support our team on Wednesday mornings.
The Pickleball Club Championships had a great turnout with 24 members participating over two days. On Saturday, January 18th the Intermediate divisions competed. The winners in the Men’s & Women’s groups were Randy Hoffman & Debbi Hoffman. It turned into a family affair. David Dunne & Nicole Woodhouse came in second and Mark Seversen and Detra Wilson finished third. On Sunday, 8 women battled it out in the Advanced group and a Club Champion was crowned. Congratulations to GraceAnn Graumann for coming out on top. Hayley Carty and Denise Powell finished second and third. The Men’s Advanced division was pushed back to Saturday, January 25, 2025. The results will be in the next newsletter. Again, THANK YOU all for playing. I look forward to growing this event into three divisions in the future.
Be sure to sign up for the Valentine’s Mixed Doubles Round Robin later this month and start looking for your partner (I mean RINGER) for the upcoming Pickleball and Tennis Member/Guest events.

It’s February, and what is that I hear? You’re bored with your exercise routine? Already? I totally get it, which is why I advise you to always seek out new tools to bump up your fitness sessions. This month, it’s the Stability Ball. We have all sizes in the Fitness Center plus racks of them in the Studio. So come on down and Get On the Ball with these moves!
Work up to three sets of 25 repetitions for each exercise. Exhale during the contraction portion of the move and make sure that your shoulder blades are stable in your back, not raising up to your ears.
1) Pushups: Start in a plank position with knees on top of the ball. Keep your abs tight throughout, body straight. Bend your elbows until your forehead is close to the floor, then drive up with control to straight arms.
2) Tuck: Start in same position as Pushup, now tuck your knees into your chest. The ball will roll forward. Keep your shoulder blades stable.
3) Pike: Same position as the Tuck, but now keep your legs straight and hike your hips up, almost like a handstand. Keep your shoulders down, away from ears.
4) Crunch: Lie on ball with lower back supported, toes braced along a baseboard. Hold your head stable and crunch forward. The ball must not move, just flex your spine forward and then extend back. Do not let your head drop back but rather tuck your chin and focus forward.
5) Side Crunch: Rotate from the Crunch position to lying on your side. Keep your feet up against the baseboard, top foot in front, and support your head. Move laterally, as if your body is between two panes of glass.
1) Do as many healthy activities as possible in this eight-week period Your progress will be recorded with Gold Bees on the “Wall of Fame” in the Fitness Center January 4th - March 1st
2) We encourage “cross-pollination” across all of Birnam Wood: Golf, Tennis, Pickle, Studio classes, Saturday Seminars, Healthy Meals and more!
3) You receive: a healthier, happier body and spirit, awesome Birnam Wood Fitness t-shirt, fun with your fellow members and prizes-prizes-prizes for the top winners at the March 1st Party!
