MEMBERS OF BIRNAM WOOD
The preliminary budget was reviewed in August and final resolution will take place in September. Hopefully, we can achieve the “soft landing” balance between cost reductions and revenue increases that will allow us to maintain a high-quality experience and a full membership level.
Tim Armour, President The Board, the Finance Committee, and the staff will have a difficult job this year in putting together an operating budget that deals with the inflationary costs pressures we are experiencing at every turn. The national inflation rate is above 9%, we are not immune to many of the cost increases experienced across the nation. A sample includes expected insurance increases approaching 20% and course maintenance labor costs up nearly 15%.
Our goal is to maintain the high service and quality standards while avoiding a margin reduction in our financial performance. That means we are looking at “rational” price increases that will likely be higher than in periods of lower inflation. It is a delicate balance. We could reduce services to limp through this hopefully temporary period of rising prices, but we do not want to diminish the experience at Birnam Wood, especially after going through the Covid lock-down and the clubhouse closure. But we are looking hard at all opportunities to reduce costs, that will not lower the quality at Birnam in a way that would be noticeable to members.
PRESIDENT’SLETTER
So, expect an increase in initiation fees, cottage rental charges, greens fees, and dues above “normal” as well as some well-chosen reductions in costs/services.
DEAR2
We are blessed with a strong membership and a waiting list above 50. We are seeking a “soft landing” that lowers expenses in a way that will not be noticeable and increases fees to a level that will not drop our membership level below 800. There is no algorithm that will tell us what that balance between cost reductions and revenue increases should be. We will have to work together to use seasoned judgment to strike the right balance.

I personally wish to thank the many committees who have worked in tandem to make these enhancements come to fruition, and my team, who are uniquely dedicated, day in day out, to providing our Birnam Wood members and their guests with world-class, genuine hospitality.
For those looking to plan upcoming celebrations, The Ballroom will be a stunning location for events up to 100 guests, and The Library is a stylish and bright venue for special events up to 15 people. Our talented and creative Private Events Director, Tiffany Grummer, is available to assist in planning and executing the perfect event.
Our Garden Cottage renovations have been exceedingly well received, and we are proud that 100% of our 18 guest cottages are in pristine condition. With the desire to provide members with increased booking convenience, starting this September you will be able to place your cottage reservations online via the App or website. Cottage availability will be reflected up to the minute on our online system. You may, however, still contact Cathy Kendrick directly to assist you with your bookings. I’ll take this opportunity to remind you that cottage reservations are made on a first come - first served basis, and reservations may not be booked more than one year in advance.
SEPTEMBER 2022 3 Dear Members, As we approach the end of this fiscal year, it gives me considerable pride to reflect on the significant accomplishments of these past 10 months. I also want to share my great excitement for the upcoming year where you, our members, will create memories alongside friends and family in the spectacular new clubhouse. You have our commitment that we will continue to provide engaging activities and incomparable service in the incredible setting that is Birnam Wood.
The 19th Hole Bar will retain its club-like appeal for convivial post-sporting respite. Additionally, we are expanding our cocktail program and lounge menu, offering members a unique cocktail lounge for pre-or post-dinner gatherings. The Living Room will be a sophisticated and elegant venue for hors d’oeuvres and wine by the glass, and the Terrace and the Dining Room will be subtlety refreshed to complement the overall clubhouse aesthetic.
Jordan Sweeney, CSW, General Manager and Chief Operating Officer
As we prepare for the ceremonious return to the clubhouse, I want to highlight the enhanced opportunity that this new space offers for dining as well as private events and celebrations.
See you at the Club, Jordan Sweeney, CCM FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

FUN POLICE CALLED REGARDING MOTOWN DANCE PARTY
MONTECITO8
Okay… I’m obviously kidding but our members, dressed in their Motown finest, were having a ball last Saturday night! Young and old alike were dancing the night away! We are already getting requests to do it again next year! Our members love to dance and have FUN which is why we do what we do on House Committee! Our Birnam staff works so hard to produce these wonderful events. Please let them know how much you appreciate it! Brunch with (Disney) Characters was enjoyed by our young families and many felt it was (almost) like going to Disneyland!
Have you tried our new menu? Chef Abdu, Eric Salazar and Louie Flores have given great thought to this new menu which includes old favorites as well as new and interesting choices. The House Committee reviewed the proposed menu and gave it a rousing endorsement. The menu, along with interesting nightly specials, should please all palates. We hope you will enjoy! Our sommelier, Zac Welch, and team went all out on a great Food and Wine festival! Zac went to great lengths to select some of the best wines and Chef Abdu did an outstanding job with food accompanying the wine offerings. We’ve received rave reviews on this special event! As I write this, tonight is the ever-popular Western Party where we get to don our jeans and boots and enjoy great barbeque and western music. We even have a line dancing instructor! A special hats off to our events coordinator, Tiffany Grummer, who puts her heart and soul into every event we throw! You are a real jewel, Tiffany! Thanks for all you do to create the fun and magic at our club! What a summer of entertainment and fun! We hope you have enjoyed these many offerings! It’s been another great summer at Birnam Wood!

All of these teams, plus the Par 3 Contest winner (Ryan Malmsten and Nathaniel Curran), began the Pure Alternate Shot Horse Race with hopes of taking home the overall crown of the Robert Trent Jones Classic for 2022.
On the first hole, four teams were eliminated. The remaining seven teams went to the 18th tee, where four more teams would be eliminated. The final three teams who survived the first two holes were: Seth Epstein and Kenny Van Zant (Flight 1), Al Barkley and Marc Wolfsohn (Flight 5), and John Washer and Richman Bry (Flight 8). The team of Epstein and Van Zant played hole 18 to perfection. Beautiful drive, layup to a nice yardage, and then a wedge shot on the green. The other teams experienced minor difficulties during the play of the hole. That left the door wide open for Seth Epstein and Kenny Van Zant with a two-putt par for the victory. This was

Where has the time gone? Summer was here last I checked, but now, Fall is right around the corner! Summer was filled with awesome events, and Fall has many exciting things still to come! The biggest golf event of the Summer, the Robert Trent Jones Classic, was held at the end of July. The RTJ Classic took on a new look this year, as the committee changed the format to five 9-hole matches. Also, new to the event was a Par 3 Contest on Thursday afternoon to kick the event off. The field was split into front and back nine divisions. Every hole was converted into a par 3. The two-man teams played partner better ball (Net only). The winner of the front nine was Kelly Vandever and Nick Behrman with a score of 23. The winner of the back nine was Ryan Malmsten and Nathaniel Curran with a score of 22. Now, for the main tournament, the field was divided into ten flights of six teams. Each team played a nine-hole match versus each team in their flight. The team accumulating the most points would win their flight and punch their ticket into the Championship Horse Race, where the overall champion would be determined.

Finally, I wanted to take a moment to reiterate our president’s message from a couple of months ago. It is so important to live by the “Golden Rule”. If everyone treated all other members, guests and staff the same way they wish to be treated, the club would be the best club, second to none. I encourage everyone to be aware of their surroundings when having conversations with their friends, so as not to offend a nearby member. If your group has room in front of you, and there is a group coming up behind you, invite them to play through. If you are the group coming up, please ask to play through or go around. Doing so without a conversation makes for players getting a little upset. Abide by club policies, since those were put in place by the club’s past governing committees out of respect for their hard work and dedication to make Birnam Wood a wonderful place for all members to share. Finally, respect homeowners’ properties by refraining from entering a yard to retrieve a golf ball. I encourage everyone to do everything in their power to make Birnam Wood the most wonderful place to be a member.

Let’s look at the table below to illustrate how lift and drag are not linear, and that a headwind hurts more than a tailwind helps. These numbers are measured from a 140-yard shot. Take notice that a 20-mph headwind will hurt twice a much as a 20-mph tailwind will help, and a 25-mph headwind will hurt three times as much a 25-mph tailwind will help. Calculations provided by TRACKMAN U.
The strategy for playing a shot into a headwind is to select a club that has less loft, which will reduce the spin loft. This will reduce the amount of lift and drag, helping you to carry the ball the correct distance, as opposed to swinging harder resulting in increased spin rate. Use the opposite strategy with a tailwind. Select a club with more loft to increase the lift and drag, keeping the ball in the air.
Let’s say you’re playing two consecutive holes during a round of golf. The first hole is into a headwind and the second is with a tailwind. Have you ever wondered why the first hole plays so long and the second hole doesn’t seem to play that much shorter than normal? It’s because a headwind will always hurt more than a tailwind will help. The reason for that is because lift and drag are not linear, which I will explain later.
Scott Maier, PGA Certified Teaching Professional
HOW DOES HEADWIND AND TAILWIND AFFECT YOUR BALL FLIGHT?
Lift and drag are the forces air/wind applies to the golf ball. Lift causes the ball to rise. Drag slows the ball down. A headwind will increase the amount of lift and drag on the golf ball. Causing the shot to fly higher, carry shorter, and descend at a steeper angle. As a side note, it’s a misconception that hitting a shot into the wind will cause the ball to spin more, not true. A tailwind will reduce the amount of lift and drag on the ball. This will cause the shot to fly lower, carry farther, and descend at a flatter angle.

The actual “plan” usually consists of a colored drawing at a scale of 1” = 100’ that shows both the existing golf course and the proposed improvements. Accompanying the plan is a text that explains the basis for improvements along with a cost estimate and an implementation schedule.
A tree program is another aspect of the master plan for improvements. The golf course architect will evaluate the impact of existing trees on strategy, playability and turfgrass Ryan Bentley, Course Superintendent
In most cases, the golf course architect will begin with a complete course analysis. He will look at all the components (tee, fairways, greens, etc.) of the course and develop an overall program that will provide variety and balance relative to the game of golf.
FROM TEE TO GREEN
An approved golf course master plan can foster consistency for the future by establishing guidelines that are in keeping with the long-term vision for the course and that are maintained throughout the tenure of each new committee.
22
The reasons why a golf course master plan should be developed are varied. They can range from a desire to restore or enhance the character of a classic course to a need to establish uniform playing conditions… Whatever the reason, a golf course master plan program can be a very useful and effective method of achieving the goals for the golf course.
efficiency of functional elements such as the drainage, irrigation and cart paths systems will be maximized. The aesthetics and beauty of the course will be enhanced by highlighting attractive focal points and by screening undesirable views. Ease of maintenance is usually another important consideration. If there is a desire to restore the character of a classic course, the golf course architect will relate the design features or strategic principles from the classic era to the modern game and its improved technologies. Existing bunkering will be refurbished, and the green complexes will be studied to make sure that the putting surfaces haven’t atrophied over the years. A skilled architect can even take a mediocre hole on a classic course and turn it into something that is truly memorable.
A “golf course master plan” is simply the common term for a renovation or improvement program at an existing golf course.
Issues of safety will be addressed. The benefits of natural elements such as vegetation and water features will be accentuated. The
Recently I read a great article about golf course renovations from the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) and I wanted to share some of the highlights of the article as they pertain to Birnam Wood.
Almost everyone knows what a renovation is when talking about upgrading the kitchen or bathroom in a house but may not fully understand why a golf course should ever be renovated. Throw in the term “master plan” and things can become even less clear.
By Steven P. Forrest, ASGCA Past President
Golf
Uniform playing conditions can be developed by adhering to the United States Golf Association’s specifications relative to the construction of greens, bunkers, and tees. The introduction of optimum turfgrass varieties can further improve the playing experience. Consistent agronomic standards and maintenance practices can also be developed, generally with the aid of a qualified agronomist.
If you are a member of an older, traditional country club, you may have heard the terms “golf course master plan” popping up in general conversation recently. With all the “country-club-fora-day” public courses that were created in the late nineties, many private clubs have felt the pressure to upgrade their golf courses and facilities in order to remain competitive in the marketplace.
Golf Course Renovations And Master Plans: Why And When?
It is not unusual for a golf course master plan program to establish tee and course length options that are suitable for all users. Hazards are placed to establish strategy and challenge the best players, while safer, alternative routes are provided for lessskilled players.

There is no set schedule for a golf course master plan for improvements. However, it is always best to consider the need for a master plan before replacing a major component (such as the irrigation system, the greens or the cart path) of the golf course. Otherwise, the golf course architect’s options may be severely limited in the upgrading of one of the major items, they are usually very reluctant to go in and rip out something even though the architect may have a fantastic idea for an improvement.
This year’s theme celebrates the 1920’s. We encourage all ladies to embrace this glamorous era! Suggestions include pearls, pleated skirts, knickers, argyle, and cloche hats, all popular items in the 20’s.

This will be continually updated as our programs thrive.
One of our most popular events has been our Bocce Ball leagues. The Summer league was exciting to say the least. Each Wednesday afternoon, the bocce courts really heated up with competition, yet the one thing that stuck out in my mind was the camaraderie I witnessed. New friendships formed, and a great time was had by all. This year’s Summer Champions were none other than “The Big La Bocce”, captained by Frank Blue and Bob Toledo.
Greetings from Athletics! Wow… can you believe that another beautiful summer is just about in the rear-view mirror? What a summer it has been at Birnam Wood! We held tennis/pickleball summer camps, pickleball club championships, along with plenty of tennis opportunities for our amazing members.

Congratulations to the team for such a strong season! Now, let’s focus on our Fall season! The lighted Bocce patio area at Birnam Wood is beautiful, especially when the fire pits are lit. What a destination, not only for Bocce Ball, but for any gathering you may want. Come on out and see for yourself.
This team entered the play-off representing the Mountain Division, and in third place! Yes, the last team in their division to make it to the post season. Well, once in the post season, they boasted a 6-game winning streak while only dropping one individual game. This is championship caliber performance.
Wishing you all good health and fitness. See you on the courts!

Speaking of thriving, our Tennis Sip n’ Serve events have been a kick this summer. We always manage to gain players each time I host the event. It’s been so amazing and gratifying! Reverse Hamstring Walk: Start with feet together, chest up, looking straight ahead. Lift your right leg straight back, keeping your leg and body in a straight line, no bending at the hips. Your arms will reach out forward to assist in balancing, and your focus will be at a point on the floor directly under your hands. Now step back with the right foot and bring the left foot next to it, back to your starting position. Repeat with the left.
Walking Knee Lift with Hug : Stand tall and bring your right knee up to your chest, hugging it without slumping forward. Step forward on right foot and repeat the hug on the left leg.
You should warm up before your workout with some super deep stretches, right? Wrong!
FITNESS NEWS Joy DuMay & Liz Parrish, Co-Directors
Begin by doing some Leg Swings (stand tall, hold onto a chair for balance, and swing one leg forward and back and side to side) and Heel/Toe Walks (walk across the room on your heels, then toes, standing tall with shoulders relaxed).
Frankenstein Walk: Stand tall with chest up and shoulders relaxed. Reach arms out in front of your shoulders. Step forward with the right foot and lift your left leg straight up in front. Move slowly, with control: your leg should only go up as high as it feels comfortable. Repeat with the other side, making sure that you keep your hips stable, with perfect posture.
The best warm up is a combination of elevating your body core temperature and rehearsing the activity to come. Simply put, you need to do a Dynamic Warmup, which is “moving while you stretch”. Your goal is to limber up, release any tension in the body, and become more aware of your breathing, balance and posture. This will prevent injury and muscle soreness, as well as help to improve overall performance. Try the following moves to enervate and energize, performing them ten times each side. Take your time and focus on controlling the move with your core engaged. Also, SIGN UP FOR THE “DO THE LOOP” Fall Fitness Challenge where you will not only train to walk or run a 2.5 or 5K, but Saturdays from September 17th until the Walk/Run Challenge on October 22nd, you will learn some cool Dynamic Moves such as the Walking Quad Stretch, the Rotational, Lateral and Spiderman Lunges, Power Skips and the (ever-popular) Inchworm!
