DEAR MEMBERS OF BIRNAM WOOD
PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Tim Armour, President
November is the seasonal time of Thanksgiving so I will focus this letter on saying a much needed Thank You to a number of key individuals retiring from important positions at Birnam.

I will begin with Jeff Barbakow who served ably as President of the Board of Directors from November 2020 to April 2022. Jeff is completing his third year on the Board this year and will retire from Board service. During his tenure as President, Birnam Wood improved in virtually every important measure, including membership, financial strength, and capital improvements. This occurred within the middle of the Covid pandemic which necessitated a significant pivot of food service and club services. Join me in thanking him for his service, especially
when medical issues forced him to step back from the job. Fortunately, he has now rebounded back to good health.
In addition, Jeff is joined by four other Board members who are retiring this month after a three-year term of service on the Board. They include Bryan De Ponce, Vicki Hazard, Ilene Nagel and Lizzie Peus. They served during a period when Birnam Wood achieved significant improvements in membership and financial health. If a measure of contribution is leaving an institution in better condition than you found it at the start of your service, then they all were positive contributors.
We will miss the contributions of these five individuals and thank them for serving as wise and able Board members these last 3 years. It was not a period of business as usual, and they stepped up to the challenge of frequent “emergency” meetings called over the last several years. Thank you to all five of these individuals.
I would also like to call out some committee heads who have contributed significantly to Birnam’s progress and are leaving their chairmanships. Nanette Vaughan left as head of the Fitness Committee this year but guided it through a major upgrade and remodel. Her passion and determination resulted in significant improvement in the fitness facilities, including an expansion outdoors. We thank Nanette for her service, both as head of the Fitness Committee and her long service as head of the Homeowners Committee.
In the coming year, Beth Wood will be retiring as head of the House Committee. She has been a positive force for many years and has revitalized the parties and events at Birnam Wood. Her energy and creativity will be greatly missed.
Finally, Nancy Hunter will be stepping aside as head of the Architecture and Landscape (A&L) Committee this year. She guided the committee during the largest home improvement boom in our history. More that 26 homes were sold during the last 12 months or so and all of them sought A&L approval for their building plans. We thank Nancy for her tireless effort during this tumultuous period.
Finally, a word about the process of replacing the 5 departing Board members. On November 3rd, shareholders will submit ballots voting for an incoming slate of 5 new directors, 3 homeowners and 2 resident members. These include Linda Gluck, Wade Nichols, Chris Teasley, Steve Jones, and Kelly Vandever. These candidates will be strong Board contributors. They were recommended by a Nominating Committee selected by the Board which consisted of three past presidents (myself, David Grotenhuis, Russ Fraser) and Bill Kimsey, Jim Shattuck, Beth Wood, and David Cronenbold. I would like to thank the committee for selecting such a promising slate of directors.
At the November 3rd meeting, the new Board of Directors will also approve a new President of the Board. I am not a candidate to continue as president next year, but will continue my current term on the Board. I will be able to share with you the Board’s selection of the president-elect on November 3rd.
So, thank you to all the Board members, committee heads, and committee members for your service to Birnam Wood. You have made a difference in the quality and strength of the club. Together we will continue to build a strong future for Birnam Wood.

“On November 3rd, shareholders will submit ballots voting for an incoming slate of 5 new directors, 3 homeowners and 2 resident members.”

Speaking of the 19th Hole, it recently reopened for dinner. So, if you haven’t experienced the “newly refreshed” 19th Hole, call the front desk and make your reservation today.
This month we are hosting a number of fun events including Chef Abdu’s first cooking class which will take place on November 12th. We will also host our annual Black Friday Wine Sale where we will bring all the wine from our award-winning cellar to our Private Events room and sell it to our members (pretty much at cost!) No need to sign up for this event, it will take place on Friday, November 25th from 1pm-8pm.

We have just finished our fiscal year and our Club is in great financial shape. We have 800 members with 63 people on the waitlist. Having a full membership is the key to a healthy club so thank you all for supporting our Club.
Finally, this year we are focusing our energy on enhancing our service. If there are any areas where you feel we could improve our service, please email me, or use the Compliments and Comments tab on the APP. We’d love to hear from you.
I’ll see you around the Club, Jordan Sweeney, CCM

GRAND RE-OPENING GALA AND A NEW HOUSE COMMITTEE CHAIR

As I mentioned in last month’s newsletter, after serving on the House Committee since 2014, I am leaving the position as Chair. I’m thrilled to announce that Rachael Douglas will be the new Chair of the House Committee. She has been serving on the committee and has demonstrated strong leadership abilities as well as being a very positive ambassador for Birnam! Since joining the club as an avid tennis player, she has also served on the Racquets Committee. Rachael has also sponsored a number of new members, the lifeblood of our club! She is a realtor at Berkshire Hathaway and sits on many committees, including the Professional Standards Committee for the Board of Realtors. In addition, she maintains a high level of engagement in the community, including the Board of Trustees at Lotusland. Rachael is a real dynamo! She represents the energy and enthusiasm that will continue to elevate our members’ experience in the dining and events arena at BWGC.
The Grand Re-opening Gala was a great success! Our members were definitely energized by their new and improved clubhouse! Dressed in their elegant finery, they dined and danced the night away under the stars! Many commented it was one of our best events! To accommodate our members who didn’t attend the Gala, the House Committee decided to have a complementary Open House the following day for members to tour and enjoy their new clubhouse.
It has been both a joy and privilege to serve as your House Committee Chair. I want to thank all of you for your suggestions and feedback. It has truly helped guide and elevate our member experience at Birman Wood!

GOLF NEWS
Michael Goodcase, Director of Golf
The holidays are right around the corner!! Remember to keep your golf shop in mind when you are thinking about a special gift for that golfer in your life.
We also carry plenty of gift ideas even if that special someone does not play golf. If you are thinking about special ordering something, please plan well in advance as the supply issues can still take some time.
The Ladies’ Club Championship was contested in September. The format was match play. They had a field of six players, so a couple of players had byes through the first round: Vivienne Bellisario (Defending Champ) and Kathy Barton (#2 seed). The first-round matches were Esther McKinley versus Jill Mazursky and Nancy Hunter versus Karen Peus Esther McKinley won her match and played against Vivienne Bellisario in the second round. Nancy Hunter won her match and played against Kathy Barton in the second round. Both players who had byes in the first round proved worthy of their seeding, as they both took care of business in rounds two. Those victories set up a finals match up of Vivienne Bellisario versus Kathy Barton. The match started out as a seesaw affair. Kathy Barton won the opening hole, and Vivienne Bellisario answered right back with a victory at the second hole. Same pattern occurred on holes 3 and 4. They remained all square after halving holes 5 and 6. Kathy Barton regained the lead on hole 7. After halving the

eighth hole with pars, Kathy Barton took the first two up lead of the match winning the ninth hole. At that point, she never looked back. She increased the lead to 3 up after 10. Vivienne Bellisario answered with a victory at the 11th hole. They halved holes 12 and 13. Kathy Barton played holes 14 and 15 beautifully, making pars on both holes to take the victory 4 & 3. This was her third time winning the championship in the last 5 years!!
The ladies also played their President’s Cup in conjunction with the final round of the championship. Priscilla Gaines won that title by beating Margarita Lande in a card-off. Each player finished their round with 18 points in the point par format. Congratulations to all the winners!!
The Lads and Lassies was also played in September. The Couples Club Championship is always a great event as men and women pair up in a better ball event to find out who will come out on top. Congratulations to our overall champs, John Perry and Kum Su Kim. They shot net 60 in the better ball format. Our gross champs were Andrew and Asia Anthony with a score of 71.
It is important that I remind all golfers and homeowners about our protocols with regards to errant golf shots. Errant shots are a definite part of golf. All players wish they could play every round without ever hitting a ball out
The BWWGA 2022 most improved players:
January - Ingrid Brandes
February - Marta Babson
March - Patty Sheehan
April - Teri Sahhar
May - Melanie Judson
June - Vivienne Bellisario
July - Diane Lundberg
August - Esther McKinley
September - Celeste Turbeville
of bounds. Unfortunately, that is impossible. However, when a golfer does hit a golf ball towards one of the homes on property, it is important to follow these steps. Please yell fore in case someone is outside in the yard. Go by the property to see if anyone was harmed or if there was property damage. Wait a couple of minutes to see if a homeowner comes out, to see if there is anything you can do. Finally, if you hear a loud crash and no one is home, please report the errant shot to the golf shop staff. As homeowners, please understand that no golfer is intentionally hitting errant golf shots. Both parties need to treat the other with respect, and try to do the right thing.
WHY DO YOU SLICE THE BALL?

Scott Maier, PGA Certified Teaching Professional
Have you ever asked yourself the question “Why do I slice the ball?”

There are 3 main causes for a slice:
1) The face angle is open to the club path.
2) The club path is too “out-to-in.”
3) Ball contact with the club face is off center.
Since face angle is 90% responsible for the direction of the ball flight when swinging a driver, I’m going to focus on face angle. Here’s a drill to fix an open face:
Start with a PW, 9, or 8-iron. Grip the club so that the face is extremely closed. The club head should be resting at a 45-degree angle facing left for a right-handed golfer. Start with a practice swing. Swing the club back until the shaft is parallel to the ground and stop. Check the face to be sure the face is still angled towards the ground. If it points to the sky, the face has rotated open and should be corrected. Keep practicing this until the face is angled toward the ground. Now swing the club through impact making sure to stop your follow-through when the shaft is parallel to the ground and pointing towards the target. Again, just like on the backswing, the face at this point should be angled towards the ground. If the face is pointing toward the sky, it is too open.
Give yourself time to get comfortable with keeping the face closed on both the back swing and follow through. If you have been slicing the ball for a long time, chances are that you have never felt a closed face. Keep making practice swings without stopping. Then make the same swings hitting balls and checking your face angles. Your goal is a low and left ball flight. If the ball flight is straight or right, then the face is opening during the swing and you should start from the beginning and go through the progression again.
You should not expect to master your new face angle in just one or two practice sessions but, once you start fixing that slice, you will not only notice a straighter shot but you will also gain more distance. The next time you are watching professional golf on television, watch the pros on the tee box and see how they too are constantly checking their face angles. Swing corrections, especially major adjustments, take time. Your patience will be rewarded!

FROM TEE TO GREEN
Ryan Bentley, Golf Course Superintendent

Fall season has arrived and that of course means Fall Golf Course Maintenance and Winter Prep is in full swing. There are two key items we would like to discuss briefly here:
1) Fall Aeration
2) Sand Topdressing
Let’s start with greens aeration. This Fall the Greens aeration began on October 18th and over a three-day period we were able to:

• Aerate the greens with a 3/8 in Quad Tine
• Cleanup all the cores
• Sand topdress
• Drag the sand into the holes
• Roll the greens.
The team did a great job, and the weather was a little on the warm side for aeration with a high of 92 degrees on Wednesday; however that should prove very beneficial for the healing of the greens. Pictured below are a few photos showing the progress of the greens this week.
Pictured here Day 1, October 18th
Picture 1) Freshly Aerated Green

Picture 2) Freshly Cleaned Green
Picture 4) The Healing Begins
Picture 3) Freshly Sand Topdressed and Dragged Sand into the Green
Pictured here is a green on day 2 after being aerated and it shows the need for additional dragging of the sand into the surface to fill voids and a need for rolling and mowing to begin the full restoration back to our expected smooth surfaces.

As we moved into day 2 and 3 of process, the work was focused on
• Dragging the sand into the open voids from aerating
• Rolling the greens to smooth the surface
Pictured are greens 2 days after aeration as the healing begins from this disturbance of the surface.
Pictured here is hole #9 on Friday October 21st only 3 days after being aerated. We are looking at another 5-7 days of cultivation practices in order to get them back to quality condition before Winter.

The next step in our Fall Maintenance involves fairway topdressing as a major part. Please read a great Article by our very own USGA Agronomist Brian Whitlark about fairway topdressing and the benefits.
Can Sand Topdressing Make Fairways Softer?
October 07, 2022 - Brian Whitlark, senior consulting agronomist, West Region
This article was first published in the Green Section Record of the USGA.
Sand Topdressing Proved Highly Beneficial
After two years of study, sand topdressing at a rate of 0.5 inches per year – in 0.25-inch applications – for a cumulative total of 1 inch of added sand resulted in the best performance of all treatments as measured by a combination of turfgrass cover, shoot density and shear strength. Turfgrass cover, shoot density and shear strength increased for all treatments in year two, including the non-topdressed plots, but the shoot density in the topdressed plots increased by 228%, far surpassing the increase in control plots. Shear strength (divot resistance) was highest in year two in the untreated plots. Of the sand topdressed plots, the 0.5 inch per year program yielded the highest value.
Research shows that sand topdressing can be beneficial for golf course fairways, but too much sand can actually be detrimental.
Many courses apply sand to fairways to improve the physical characteristics of the rootzone and dilute thatch and organic matter. In this article, I will share research conducted in an athletic field setting that has implications for topdressing golf course fairways.
A study completed in 2008 and published in 2010 – “Sand Topdressing Applications Improve Shear Strength and Turfgrass Density on Trafficked Athletic Fields” – evaluated cumulative sand topdressing rates of 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 or 2 inches in one season applied from July 11 through August 15 in 2007 and repeated the process in 2008. Topdressing was applied at a 0.25-inch depth during each event. The native soil was a compacted sandy loam with a high bulk density of 1.6 grams per cubic centimeter and a low infiltration rate of only 0.12 inches per hour. The sand applied for topdressing was a well-graded material – meaning it had a fairly equal proportion of different sand particle sizes – comprised of 90% sand, 7% silt and 3% clay. The coefficient of uniformity (CU) of the sand was 8.0, which confirms the wide particle size distribution, and the infiltration rate was 6.1 inches per hour. As a reference, the recommended CU range for putting green construction sand is 1.8 to 3.5. The sand used in this study was not the typical coarsely graded sand often used to topdress golf course fairways.
Research plots were subjected to simulated traffic. The measures of performance in this study focused on turfgrass cover, the number of turf shoots per square foot and surface strength called turf shear, measured with the Clegg turf shear tester which measures divot resistance.
The researchers concluded that the higher shear strength in the non-topdressed plots was due to the measurement interacting with the highly compacted sandy loam soil. In this case, the higher shear strength was not indicative of a positive characteristic, but rather a representation of the compacted soil with lower turf shoot density – about half the density of the sand topdressed plots – and lower turfgrass cover. Also of note is that although the heavier sand applications showed equally good turfgrass cover and slightly higher shoot density than the 0.5 inch per year treatment, they resulted in lower turf shear strength. The study shows that some sand is good, but a lot of sand will destabilize the surface. On a golf course fairway, this means higher risk of damage from golf cart traffic and softer playing conditions.
The overarching message from this study is that sand topdressing may be a good practice for golf course fairways and approaches if rates are limited to about 0.5 inches per year with split applications, which amounts to approximately 80-90 tons per acre per year. Additionally, the sand in this study encouraged a firmer surface due to the widely graded particle size distribution. If you are using a coarse sand that is narrowly graded, the firmness will not be as great and more sand will further destabilize the surface.

Winter and the Holiday’s are upon us here at Birnam Wood!
Greetings from the Athletic Department! As summer exits and Fall is upon us, I want to thank those who have come out to play Golf Croquet with me. It’s so exciting for me to say that we have introduced the game to over 30 players so far.

Racquet Sports are more popular than ever here at Birnam Wood. Our Two Ladies’ Interclub teams are enjoying a super fun season on the hard courts. We have had an A-2 team, but now we officially have a ladies C level team, and they are really enjoying the experience. I’m the lucky coach that gets to train them.

A-2 LADIES
We have quite a bit of Tennis and Pickleball in store for you as well. Please come out and enjoy Open Pickleball play from 1:00 – 3:00pm on both Wednesdays and Saturdays. Also, keep a watch for fun events such as our hugely popular “Dinks n’ Drinks” pickleball socials, and the tennis “Sip n’ Serve” socials too. Both are an amazing opportunity to meet your fellow court sport members.
