MAY 2024 • BIRNAM WOOD NEWSLETTER

DEAR MEMBERS OF BIRNAM WOOD

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Dear Members,

This month I would like to take the opportunity to highlight some of the exceptional staff we have here at the Club.

I appreciate our staff every day, but there are times when they really go above and beyond, and this past month, with the unexpected weather, was one of those times. Our records indicate that we have received 37.5” of rain since December. While we are always grateful for rain, the intensity of the rain caused interruptions and complications and staff (in all departments) stepped up to handle the challenges. The hailstorm on the night before Easter caused some significant damage to the clubhouse and the golf course and major thanks go to Michael

Alvarado, Eric Salazar, Israel Ruiz, Brian O’Laughlin and their entire teams who worked long hours to keep the drains open, care for the course, and keep the Club running. Their dedication and hard work are much appreciated!

At the end of this month our Controller, Dolly St. Germain, will be leaving us to return to her home state of Colorado. Dolly arrived at Birnam Wood March of 2020 and has been an invaluable part of our team. I would like to thank her for her dedicated service and all that she has brought to the Club. On that note, we would like to welcome Claudia Raiti who will be taking over as Controller. Claudia has many years of experience and will be a wonderful addition to the staff. I would also like to thank Manny Bravo, who recently submitted his resignation, for his many years of service to the Club. Manny has worked at the Club since 2013 and had a major role in the Thomas fire mudslides. He stepped in as Director of Security in July of 2022 after working here for many years

2

as the Assistant Director of Security. He has done a great job running the Security department and made some significant improvements to the overall security of the Club. He will be greatly missed.

Despite the changes in staff, the club is humming along. This month we will be hosting the Kentucky Derby Viewing Party, Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, the first Gathering Table of the season, and the Memorial Day BBQ. The Packing House is fully up and running and our golf season is in full swing. Thank you as always for your support of the Club and we look forward to seeing you here very soon!

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF CLUBHOUSE OPERATIONS

There is a lot happening at the Club in the month of May.

Be sure and join us on May 4th, in the 19th hole for the 150th Anniversary of the Kentucky Derby as we experience the fastest two minutes in sports… on the big screen! Pull out your fanciest hats and Derby Attire, and compete for the Best Hat, Best Dressed Individual and Best Dressed Couple.

I am happy to announce that we have received very positive feedback regarding our new water stations located throughout the clubhouse and golf course. In addition to the great, clean water we have, over the past three months, saved over 6,500 plastic bottles from the landfill!

As the summer months are fast approaching, enjoy one of Birnam’s finest amenities and invite your family and friends to stay in the cottages. You can book a cottage by calling the front desk or requesting a room through the app. We now have outdoor gas barbecues and bistro tables and chairs available upon request, and hot days always call for a splash in our newly refurbished pool. GOLF NEWS

In this article I am covering a couple of topics that our Golf Committee and Board would like to remind all golf members about. One is our dress code policy and the other is etiquette surrounding errant golf shots.

Golf course dress should conform to the golf clothing sold in the Golf Shop. Gentlemen should wear collared golf shirts tucked in at the waist and slacks, knickers, or Bermuda shorts with belts. Ladies should wear a collared shirt or jewel neckline, skirts that fall below the person’s fingertips when arms are extended by their side, Bermuda shorts, knickers, slacks, or capris. Soft spikes should not be worn inside the Clubhouse except in the locker rooms and the 19th Hole Bar.

Unacceptable Attire: Blue jean pants and jackets, tank tops, cut-offs, short shorts, sports jerseys, shirts with large insignias and phrases, baggy cargo pants or shorts, exercise tights or Tennis skirts on the golf course, caps and visors worn backward are prohibited. As a courtesy to others, gentlemen are requested to remove all headwear when inside the Clubhouse and members are requested to cover all tattoos. Swimwear is acceptable only at the Pool area.

I feel it is important to understand a couple of things that may have been misunderstood. Adherence to the golf dress code is required not only on the course, but also at the putting and chipping areas, as well as the practice facilities. Members are not allowed to go from the tennis courts or the fitness center onto

any of the practice areas without adhering to the dress code outlined above. Many times, we see members in their workout attire going to the putting green to hit a few putts, or chips. All players must be in compliance with our dress code to use any of our golf facilities: sweats, exercise tights, t-shirts, etc. are not allowed. It is also vital that all members remind any guests that they may be hosting for golf about our policy before they arrive.

Errant golf shots are always a topic of discussion here at Birnam Wood. As golfers, we need to follow these following rules when it comes to following proper etiquette regarding errant golf shots. Everyone knows that errant shots are a part of this game, no matter how hard we try to hit every ball at our target. However, if a ball is heading towards any of the homes that line our fairways, we ask that the golfer yells “Fore” as a courtesy to anyone who may be on their patio or in the backyard. The golfer should head over to the property to check and see if anyone has been injured, or if any property has been damaged. You should not proceed onto the property. You should wait and see if the homeowner comes out. The golfer should report any errant shots to the golf shop if they feel that damage may have occurred and no one was home. It is imperative that golfers make no attempts to hit golf shots over corners of the private property, yards or houses themselves. Please keep your target lines down the fairways as the holes were designed.

Finally, we ask that both parties act with the utmost respect if the golfer and homeowner meet up.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LOW POINT AND ATTACK ANGLE

As golfers we are always in pursuit of improving our golf game. That pursuit usually includes countless hours on the practice tee and during those hours everything we do revolves around improving/optimizing the impact position.

Key areas to achieving an optimal impact position are Centeredness of Contact, Face Angle, Club Path, and Speed. This article will focus on two other key areas, Low Point and Attack Angle.

Why is it important to know your Low Point and Attack Angle? Well, if you have ever experienced a thin or heavy shot, it is more than likely a result of a Low Point behind the ball and a positive Attack Angle.

The TrackMan definition for Low Point is the bottom of the forward swing arc. The average Low Point for Tour players (irons) is 4.55 inches after the ball. Average Low Point for the driver is 4.7 inches behind the ball.

My recommendation for players who want to reduce thin and heavy hits is to focus on the Low Point first. By moving the Low Point from behind to ahead of the ball you will automatically increase the Attack Angle.

A big misconception is to hit more down on the ball if you are constantly hitting thin shots. I would discourage you from trying to hit down on the ball as a first course of action because that does not guarantee you will move the Low Point in front of the ball, and you will start hitting heavy shots.

Another misconception is that the club is coming into the ball too “steep.” Yes, that can be a contribution factor, however, if the low point is ahead of the ball the club can travel on an outside path (too steep) and still achieve ball ground contact.

The TrackMan definition for Attack Angle is the vertical movement of the club head’s geometric center at the time of maximum compression.

Attack Angle will vary based on the club. Short irons such as a Sand Wedge or Pitching Wedge require the most downward movement (Tour average -4 degrees/down). As clubs become longer the downward movement decreases. The Tour average for a 4-iron is -2 degrees/down. The Driver requires the least amount of downward movement (Tour average +0.8 degrees/up). A positive Attack Angle and a low point behind the ball is most optimal for a Driver swing.

Also, keep in mind your optimal Attack Angle is based on your club head speed. Faster swing speed can have a more negative/down angle. Slower speeds require less negative.

A great drill is to place a short tee all the way into the ground four inches in front of the ball. Using a Pitching Wedge or 9-iron swing to hit the tee. It is ok if you do not hit the tee at first, but if you keep practicing you will learn to hit the tee and improve your ball striking.

Call the golf shop today to schedule a lesson so we can help you optimize your Attack Angle and Low.

FROM TEE TO GREEN

As we enter May, we step into aerification season at Birnam Wood. It’s the time of year that golfers like the least, and it’s easy to understand why. However, aerification is an incredibly important cultural practice.

Aerification involves physically removing organic matter from a stand of turf while simultaneously opening up pore space within the soil profile. This process decreases compaction, introduces oxygen to the roots for better gas exchange, and improves water infiltration. All of these factors are vital for achieving excellent turf and a superb playing surface. Over the years, a simplified version of this process has taken place here, leading to our turf becoming puffy due to excess thatch accumulation. This is most noticeable in the heat of summer, evidenced by poor cut lines and scalping. This year, we will be conducting a very aggressive aerification process to catch up for lost time from previous years.

It’s important to recognize that for longevity and improved conditions, we must put in the work and endure temporary poor conditions for a brief period. Think of aerification as setting a fitness goal for yourself. Initially, you work hard at the gym, experiencing soreness, but with consistency, you become stronger, fitter, and healthier. The same principle applies to our turf grass.

Here’s what you can expect:

• Aerification begins on May 13th and continues through May 30th. During this period, only 9 holes will be open for play each day, except for Memorial Day and weekends.

• Greens, Tees, and Collars will all receive a heavy sand topdress and a ½ inch solid tine.

• The Fairways will undergo the most aggressive process, including verticutting, circle mow-scalping, a heavy sand topdress, finishing with a 7/8” solid tine.

• The Roughs will receive thorough herbicide applications to tackle the significant Poa outbreak.

• As the process progresses across the property, we will inform homeowners when we are working in their area. We’ll start on May 13th with Holes 1 and 18 before moving through the front nine holes. During this time, the practice facility will remain open, but it will be mats only as the range tee is also being aerified.

The immediate result of this process will be brown, unsightly, and sandy turf. It’s crucial for everyone to understand that this is intentional and will yield excellent results later and throughout the year. I anticipate a total recovery time of 3 to 4 weeks, depending on the weather conditions. For faster healing, we need warm, sunny weather, something to consider for future aerification scheduling.

Before closing, I want to remind everyone about the work done on the creek on Holes 1 and 2. The large stones along the edges have been placed there mechanically, and there is a possibility of these stones shifting or settling over time. Please DO NOT attempt to enter the creeks and stay away from the edges for your personal safety.

Spring has Sprung, and Summer is here at Birnam Wood…

Though our climate is amazing year-round here on the Riveria, Montecito in the summertime is breathtaking! The days are long, and the opportunities to enjoy Birnam Woods’ outdoor activities are many. Croquet, Bocce, Tennis and Pickleball are all here for your participation and enjoyment.

June 18th is our annual showcase pickleball event of the year! Again, we are bringing in 4 of the world’s top players for you to enjoy. They represent the best and newest trends in the game. All four are super fun and their talent on court is mind blowing. Our hope is that you will sign up to be a part of this very special event. Enjoy our hors d’oeuvre and beverage offerings while watching the game’s best.

After the players do battle, they will be around to play with you and your invited guests. If you haven’t already signed up via our App, sign up before we sell out. We will only allow a certain number of attendees to keep it intimate. We look forward to seeing you there.

Our tennis & pickleball courts are quite busy these days, and below is some of what has gone on, and what you can expect over the summer.

In between the rain showers, it has been very busy on the tennis and pickleball courts. On the tennis side, our Tuesday Clay Court Clinic, Saturday Morning Live Ball Clinics, and afterschool Junior Clinics are going strong. If you are a woman who likes fun-competitive play, consider joining our Women’s Interclub teams. Matches and clinics are Wednesday mornings, and the season runs September through May. If you play pickleball, our Advanced Monday Morning or Intermediate Tuesday Morning Clinics are always full. Pickleball Open Play on Wednesdays & Saturdays from 1:00PM to 3:00PM is a big hit with 12 to 20 people consistently showing up. This is a great way to meet members without scheduling a game. Stay the whole time or come for an hour. Be on the lookout for Sip N’ Serves and Dinks & Drinks socials throughout the summer months.

PICKLEBALL

The Pickleball Interclub season is quickly approaching. Our 3.5+ team captained by Patti Gibbs has had some strong results. In their last match they won 20-4 against La Cumbre. Congratulations to the players who participated: Kelly Vandever, GraceAnn Graumann, Ryan Siemens, Laurie Thiemann, Ed & Patti Gibbs, and David & Trina Grokenberger. The format consists of mixed and gender/gender rounds. Please contact Patti if you have any interest in joining the team. More matches will be scheduled in the upcoming months against the Valley Club, Montecito Club, and Cathedral Oaks.

A new 5.0 Pickleball Interclub League is forming and BWGC will be a part of the fun. Kelly Vandever and Jeff Villano will Cocaptain the team. The season will run from the end of May until mid-August. Stay tuned for more information. These would be great matches to watch as some of the best players in Santa Barbara will be playing in the league.
