WHAT’S INSIDE

DEAR MEMBERS OF BIRNAM WOOD

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

I want to take this opportunity again to address the pending CUP application. There continues to be some confusion amongst Club members as to the reasons for the application.

As I have explained in prior columns, in order to undertake additional projects on the Birnam Wood campus, zoning approval by the County is required. For example, we cannot initiate the creation of additional parking locations without receiving County approval. The same is true for other projects that may be considered by the Board in due course. It is important to understand that this is solely an administrative process and that no decisions have been made by the Board regarding any of the projects listed in the CUP application. At some point in the future, the Board may decide to proceed

with one or more of these projects. A recent hearing was held as an initial step in the zoning process. At that hearing, the Club was asked for additional information on several issues. This information will be provided to the County in the coming weeks.

I am pleased to report that reactions to the new Packing House restaurant to the dining experience of members and their guests continue to be uniformly positive. Personally, I am hopeful all our members will continue to view eating at the Packing House restaurant to be a unique and pleasurable experience. It is my hope that, without mandating any changes or modifications to our existing Club dress code, members will be mindful of the opportunity to “dress up a bit” when dining at the Packing House. I think it would be terrific if our male members would wear sports coats, and our women members would consider an extra touch in dressing for dinner at this special place.

2

While addressing the subject of the dress code, it is important to inform all members that the Board has, over the last several months, taken individual action regarding members’ lack of compliance with the dress code. The Board and I recognize that not everyone supports or agrees with our current dress code. But, until it is modified by the Board, it is a rule of the Club to be observed by all members at all times.

Lastly, a brief note about water. Those of you who live inside the gates will have observed that water is flowing on several streets, which is due to the elevated levels of rain the Club has received over the last year or so. The Club has several underground streams that are causing our existing issues. Our Club staff is intimately involved in trying to find appropriate solutions to these currently unique issues. Progress will be made as solutions are developed.

Enjoy the summer at Birnam, and I look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming barbeques.

JUNE 2024 3

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

As we move into June, I want to start by recognizing my team. I have been at Birnam Wood since 2018 and seen highs and lows at the Club. There have been extraordinary events such as the Mudslides, fires, COVID19 and of course the incredible heavy rains we’ve had in the past two years. In most cases we always hear about the leaders and the faces of the Club, but we rarely hear about the selfless team and crew that work countless hours giving their sweat, tears and years to the team and cause behind the scenes. You see the star on stage, but you don’t see all the people who committed themselves selflessly to the team to allow the star to shine. Just because we don’t hear about them doesn’t mean they aren’t valuable. It is their selflessness, sacrifice, and commitment to the team that makes the team great. The truth is, if you want to be a great team, you and your team members must commit to the team and care about what you do. That’s what makes me most proud about Birnam Wood. The employees really do care, and I am so proud of them.

I wanted to highlight a few employees who you never see but are vital to our operation. The first is Eduardo Mendoza, also known as “Lalo.” Lalo is a dishwasher at Birnam Wood and has been at the Club since 1994! He is also the one who brews the Coffee for all in the morning. He is always smiling and displays a contagious, positive disposition in the kitchen. Lalo works long hours, sometimes both shifts and does it with a smile.

I also wanted to highlight our longest tenured employee at Birnam Wood, Maria Ramirez. Maria is part of our housekeeping team and has been at Birnam Wood since 1980! Maria is a hardworking, dedicated part of our operation. Maria and the housekeeping team are responsible for keeping all 18-cottages clean and fresh as well as the entire Clubhouse! Many of you may not know, but we also do all our laundry and ironing/pressing in-house! Maria and the housekeeping team at Birnam are always smiling and I’m honored to be able to work with them. One of the best parts of my day is when I sit in the breakroom for lunch with the housekeeping team. Maria and the team are amazing people. Again, you all see the Quarterback, Wide Receivers, and the Running Back, but nothing works without the offensive line.

I also want to thank Brian O’Laughlin, Rodrigo Hernandez and their entire team for the long hours and hard work during the course aerification project this past month. The course really needed the work, and we are excited to see what it looks like (and plays like) in a few weeks.

Finally, I’m excited for BBQ season! Our first Thursday BBQ will be June 6th and will continue every Thursday until Labor Day. Remember, you can wear blue denim if you prefer, on BBQ night. (Unless you are sitting in the Packing House.)

I’ll see you around the Club,

GOLF NEWS

The golf course is recovering from its most recent aerification process. It will soon be back to the wonderful condition that we expect.

Summer is an absolutely perfect time to play golf here at Birnam Wood. Daylight extends well into the evening. Members often ask me, “when is the best time to play golf”. My favorite time is the late afternoon. It is so peaceful, and most of the time, you can have the golf course to yourself. You can easily tee off around 4:00pm, play 9, or 18 holes, enjoy a post round cocktail, and then enjoy dinner here at the club. A round at that time can be at the pace you desire.

On that same topic of pace of play, I feel this is a prime time to remind everyone our pace of play guidelines. In the golf policies set forth by the Golf Committee, a regular round of golf should not exceed four hours. The committee hopes that most rounds will be finished much faster than that. For our events, we extend that time around 4 hours and 30 minutes. The committee feels that is enough time to play while adhering to different tournament formats. The golf shop adds a pace of play guideline to tournament score cards to help players see where they are in accordance with the pace of play guidelines. When

you look at your tournament card, you should be finished with the hole by the time listed underneath that hole. It would be wonderful if players would take a moment to check their own times, without the golf shop needing to warn groups when they are out of position, or behind time. Everyone’s round would be more enjoyable if all players took responsibility to keep their group on time for both regular rounds and tournament rounds.

Congratulations to our McLean Champions, Palmer Brown and Jacob Bobek. They posted the low score of day 2 to take home the title by half of a stroke over eventual gross champions, Chris Gregoire and Rob Crane. The event was tightly contested over the two days. The leaders on day 1, Austin Muller and Kelly Vandever, had just a ½ stroke lead going into day 2. Seven teams were within 4 strokes of the lead, including our eventual champions, Palmer Brown and Jacob Bobek. Their final round 61 propelled them past a number of teams and into the winners’ circle. Congratulations also go out to our Horse Race Champions, Will Borgers and Nathan Ridgell

In June, the Men’s Top Gun will take place followed by the Men’s Robert Trent Jones Classic in July. Look for the events on the App and get signed up.

DO YOU HAVE A THREE-PUTT PROBLEM

If you average more than one three putt per round Dave Pelz would say “You have a three-putt problem.” We know Birnam Wood’s greens can be challenging to read and putt, however, the ability to eliminate three putts from your game will help lower your score.

Trivia question: How many players on the PGA Tour averaged more than one three putt per round last year? The answer is zero. Yes, you read that right, not a single player averaged more than one three putt per round. The Tour average was .52. How about the Champions Tour? Still zero. The Tour average was .52 per round. How about the Korn Ferry Tour? You guessed it, zero. The Tour average .48 per round. The LPGA Tour does not keep track of three putts per round, but it is safe to assume they are zero too.

One cause for three putts is not lagging the first putt to a reasonable distance. To help determine what is a reasonable distance use the 10% Rule.

For example: Length of First Putt Goal

30-foot putt inside 3’

40-foot putt inside 4’

50-foot putt inside 5’

60-foot putt inside 6’

If putts are finishing outside the 10% rule, you are increasing the chances of three putting and need to practice lag putts.

Is direction or distance more important when lag putting? The answer is distance. That is not to say direction is not important, but the percentage of putts made from greater than twenty-five feet is less than 6%. So, focus on distance rather than accuracy to help reduce three putts.

January - Jane Habermann

February - Terri Bennett

March - Jill Mazursky

April - Dina Wilson

To illustrate let us say you aim the putter three feet left of the hole for a straight putt from fifty feet, and the putt has a perfect speed. The ball will come to rest three feet left of the hole. Leaving a reasonable chance for a two putt.

Now let us say that the same putt you aim the putter at the center of the hole, but the putt lacks enough speed, and the ball finishes fifteen feet short of the hole. Now you have work left to do to avoid a three putt.

My recommendation is when you practice putting to budget time for the 40, 50, 60foot putts, not just the short ones. To do that, putt back and forth from one end of our practice putting green to the other.

Schedule a lesson today so we can fix your three-putt problem. JUNE 2024 15

FROM TEE TO GREEN

I finally understand what everyone means by “May Grey” and “June Gloom.” My first spring here in Montecito did not disappoint. May couldn’t have been any greyer, just as we began the aerification process. Although the overcast weather was not ideal for aerification, the agronomy team persisted. I am so proud of my team for being willing to work long extra hours over the past four weeks and really putting everything they had into the process. We did fall a bit behind the original anticipated schedule, as we had to remove and haul off excessive amounts of thatch. We knew going in that thatch was becoming an issue, but we had no clue just how much was really in the profile.

Some of you may be wondering why we go through all the effort just to remove thatch. Let me explain why it’s so important.

Excessive thatch is problematic in several ways, the most important being its impact on water. Thatch is made up of dead or dying organic leaf material that gets deposited on the soil surface. Over time, thatch builds up and forms a sponge-like layer above the soil surface and roots. Have you ever noticed that the sprinkler heads seem to sink over time? Well, the heads aren’t actually sinking; thatch buildup is raising the turf canopy. As this thatchy sponge grows, it impedes water from reaching the roots, reducing watering efficiency. Because thatch acts like a sponge, it must fill to its capacity before releasing any water into the soil or roots. In extreme cases, you can have soft, wet surfaces and plants still suffering from drought stress. Removing or even reducing thatch on the surface increases the efficiency of your watering.

So, with that said, we actually get a return on investment for the work and time spent managing our thatch. Not only will playing conditions improve, but we will also get more out of our water and, over time, be able to use less water as it goes straight to the roots and isn’t held up in thatch.

TENNIS/PICKLEBALL SERVING TIP

Have a plan . Whether you are playing tennis or pickleball, you should have a well thought out plan before serving. This is the only shot you can control in each sport so take advantage of it. If you are a beginner, you may just want to get your serve in, but consider hitting it higher over the net so the ball will go deeper, which in turn will keep your opponent back and make it harder for them to move forward. A more skilled player will think about hitting their serve with pace, placement, and spin to set up their next shot. For instance, serve wide to open up the court. Professional players use these simple strategies, and you can too.

FITNESS NEWS

The core is more than your abs.

If the goal of your core workout is to walk away with a chiseled six-pack, you’re missing the point. In fact, the abdominal muscles are just one of the major muscle groups that constitute the core; it also includes deep muscles in your pelvis, hips and back; smaller stabilizing muscles along your spine; and the diaphragm.

The core stretches from the pelvis all the way up to the neck and it surrounds the trunk — the central part of your body that houses most of the internal organs. Think of the core as a cylinder: it wraps 360 degrees, and all of those muscles interact with each other in a systematic way.

The core is your body’s power source. It’s in the core that forces are transferred from the legs to the upper body, adding oomph to a tennis serve or allowing you to hit a golf ball further down the fairway. You’re going to explode from your legs and rotate, and the momentum has to pass through the core. If you don’t have a strong core, you’ll lose strength and power. If core muscles are tired or weak, then the ligaments in your back take over and can get strained, causing back pain.

The core gives you stability, too.

To improve core endurance, you need to do planks, side planks and deadlifts, which work deep muscles of the inner core like the pelvic floor muscles; the transverse abdominis, the innermost abdominal muscles that attach to the ribs, pelvis and spine; and the multifidi, an important set of back muscles that run along the spine and are key to spinal stability.

When these muscles are strong enough, the pressure of exertion (from lifting a suitcase or digging in the garden) gets distributed throughout the core, which spares the spine from carrying too much load. You don’t want the lower back to do all the work, you want the core muscles to work together to stabilize the pelvis and the spine.

Rotation exercises are key.

One critical component missing in most core routines is rotation. Many athletic and daily activities involve rotating the body. It’s the oblique muscles, which connect the lower rib cage to the pelvis on each side of the body, that rotate and flex the trunk and spine. What rotation exercise allows you to do is build up your body’s foundation, that deeper layer that you can’t necessarily see.

Do one minute of each exercise, going through the series three times in each session, performing the session three times a week. For more assistance, contact Joy DuMay at jdumay@bwgc.net.

This class draws from standing and walking meditation traditions which cultivate “Chi”– our internal life force.
