DEAR MEMBERS OF BIRNAM WOOD

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

As the holiday season comes to a close, it leaves a warm feeling as we look back at the fun seasonal events put on and managed by our resourceful staff. Beginning with Halloween Fright Night (300 attendees including numerous spooked children), followed by Thanksgiving (over 650 meals served), and Brunch with Santa (500 attendees all watching Santa’s arrival). It is reassuring for Birnam’s future to note such enthusiasm and increased participation among our different age groups.

Looking back even further, a 2024 hallmark was this year’s opening of the Packing House, our marquee dining site. With finishing touches being applied to the Terrace, we have now completed a $10.8 million renovation of the clubhouse, outdoor terraces, club and garden cottages and our multiple dining venues. Beyond initial expectations, they have made for a sort of transformation. As I noted last month in these remarks, Birnam has rebranded itself into a much more distinguished and desirable club.

All of this is only made possible through the dedicated efforts of our management team and staff, along with the selfless contributions of many members serving on our well-functioning committees. We are indeed fortunate that so many are willing to give

of their time and talent and I thank all involved for their many contributions.

As of this writing, the year draws down and 2025 looms ahead. It promises to be an exciting one for Birnam. And it begins with all the best wishes to members, staff and families for a happy and prosperous new year.

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Reflecting on a Spectacular 2024 and Looking Ahead.

As we usher in a new year, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all our members for making 2024 a truly remarkable year at Birnam Wood. Your unwavering support and enthusiastic participation have truly been the foundation of our community’s vibrancy and success.

One of the highlights of 2024 was the grand reopening of The Packing House Restaurant in March. In just a few months, it has established itself as a cherished dining destination, a perfect blend of exceptional cuisine and warm hospitality.

December was a festive month filled with unforgettable moments. Our Citrus Singers Holiday Show and Santa’s Brunch were sell-out successes. Santa’s Brunch set a new attendance record with over 500 guests in attendance, our largest turnout ever! The Club was transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with snow falling as members arrived, ponies for the little ones, and Santa making his grand entrance by helicopter onto the 18th fairway. It was a magical day for everyone involved.

Elegance took center stage at our Champagne and Caviar event, where 70 members enjoyed world-class caviar and Champagne, all while dressed to impress in tuxedos and evening gowns. It was an evening of sophistication and indulgence and the members and guests that attended raved about it.

Our December golf events also delivered exciting highlights. We kicked off the month with the annual Over the Fence Tournament, and we’re thrilled to announce that Birnam Wood triumphed over Valley Club for the fifth consecutive year! Additionally, our special Ladies’ Guest Day was a memorable occasion, featuring none other than Mike Goodcase, who dressed up as the Ghost of Christmas Present and added a touch of fun to the day.

Looking ahead to January, we’re eager to continue the momentum with an exciting lineup of events. Don’t miss the Ladies’ Putting Clinic on January 3rd, Burgundy Wine Down on January 9th, and Italian Night on January 18th. Mark your calendars for the Dr. Gundry Speaker Event on January 25th, a perfect opportunity to engage in thoughtprovoking conversation and connect with fellow members.

As always, we are grateful to have you as part of the Birnam Wood family and look forward to making 2025 another extraordinary year together. Cheers to new beginnings!

See you at the Club

GOLF NEWS

Welcome to 2025!

I trust everyone enjoyed a wonderful holiday season with family, friends and loved ones. January is a relatively quiet month for golf events. However, Men’s Team play will be kicking off its season with an away match against Saticoy Club on Saturday, January 11th. We also begin our ladies’ clinic series. These lessons are open to all lady golf members, but the classes are limited to 20 players. The first class is Friday, January 3rd from 9:00am to 10:00am. Sign ups are on the APP.

December had some wonderful events. The golf shop’s annual sale was a huge success. About 90 of our 120 balloons were popped. Ed & Ann Brady were the lucky ones who picked the ballon with the 50% discount tab in it. The winner of our grand raffle prize…… a 10-second free shopping spree went to Devra Lieb. She used the 10 seconds well picking three items that were worth over $800.

The BWWGA had the Special Holiday Guest Day on Friday, December 13th. It was a huge turnout with 76 players in attendance. Every player received tee prizes, gifts, and a big dose of holiday cheer. The winners of the event won beautiful holiday wreaths to help decorate their homes for the holidays. The net winners were Barbara Kummer, Patricia Kleveland, Cristina Kern, and Sheila Davidson .

The gross winners were Nancy Hunter, Barbara DeGroot, Sue Wilcox, and Katie Crook. Of course, there was a special guest appearance. This year, it was the Ghost of Christmas Present. His message was to stay in the moment, be generous, and be considerate of those in need.

The Golf Committee has asked that I remind everyone who plays golf that all scores should be posted. If you play 9 to 18 holes, you should post your score. The only exceptions are if you play by yourself, or play a format that does not allow posting: scramble, scotch, shamble, etc. The new handicap system will turn all scores into 18-hole indexes. If you play just nine holes, you may post a total nine-hole score. Same with 18 -hole scores. If you play 10-17 holes, you will need to post hole by hole and only the holes that you played. They no longer use net par for holes that were not played. The maximum score is still net double bogey. Match Play is a format where scores must be posted. Players should take scores they most likely would have made if the hole was not finished. This would be done in situations where holes have been conceded, or strokes have been conceded from outside of five feet. According to the USGA, strokes inside five feet should be one stroke, strokes between 5 and 50 feet would most likely be two strokes. Beyond 50 feet and strokes that need to be taken from off the putting green will be decided by a players’ ability. This is a game of honor and players should act with integrity. The handicap committee will be monitoring this moving forward.

The BWWGA 2024 most improved players:

January - Jane Habermann

February - Terri Bennett

March - Jill Mazursky

April - Dina Wilson

May - Lisa King

June - Holly Armour

July - Connie Fickel

August - Jill Mazursky

September - Renee Curtis

October - Betsey Von Summer

November - Celeste Turbeville

PLAY BETTER GOLF IN 2025

As the new year begins you have a fantastic opportunity to check in on how your golf game is going. Did you set goals for 2024? Did you achieve your goal(s) for 2024? If you answered no to one or both questions, I suggest taking the time to establish goals for 2025.

Here is a guide to setting goals and how to practice.

1) The most important question you can ask is “why do you play golf?” The answer to this question sets up the rest of the process. Do you play for fun, competition, social, is score important, or do you just want to hit the ball better?

2) Make an honest evaluation of where your golf game is. Areas to evaluate are score, full swing, short game, course management, and mental game. Which of these categories are strengths and which are weaknesses?

3) Which of the weaknesses would you like to improve in 2025?

4) Determine what is a reasonable amount of time to improve your weaknesses. One reason players do not improve is because they set an unrealistic expectation of how long it will take to make a swing change, and they become attached to this expectation. When the expectation is not satisfied the player becomes frustrated and starts to spiral downward. Butch Harmon tells the story when he first started teaching Tiger Woods, that he told Tiger there are three things we need to work on; pick one for this year. My favorite phrase that I learned while teaching at the Jim McLean Golf School regarding improvement is, “measurable progress in a reasonable amount of time.”

5) Create a practice schedule. How much time are you willing to practice each day/week to achieve your goal? Is this amount of time consistent with step four?

6) How committed are you to this practice schedule? Is it 50%, 75%, 100%? Once again be honest and hold yourself accountable.

7) When you practice, use drills and/or smaller swings at less than full speed to create “feel.” Always practice with intent!

As the year progresses periodically check in with your goals. Are you on schedule? If so great, keep going. If not, are you fulfilling your commitment time to improve? Do you need to increase the reasonable amount of time needed to improve? Do you need to change the drills you are using? Are you practicing with intent?

Be prepared to be flexible in what it takes to achieve your goals. Remember doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results…

Schedule a lesson today and we can help you establish goals and improve your golf game in 2025.

Golf Course Care in Winter: Keeping Birnam Wood Beautiful

While winter in Santa Barbara may not bring snow or freezing temperatures like other parts of the country, it still presents unique challenges for maintaining the pristine beauty of Birnam Wood. This time of year, our agronomy team works diligently behind the scenes to ensure the course stays in top condition for play, both now and as we prepare for the busier spring months. Here’s a look at what goes into winter course care and how members can help protect the course during this season.

Winter Challenges for the Course

The cooler temperatures, increased moisture, and shorter days in winter slow down grass growth, making the turf more susceptible to wear and tear. Wet conditions can also soften the ground, leaving it more vulnerable to damage from heavy foot traffic, cart use, and divots. Additionally, dormant or stressed grass takes longer to recover this time of year, so proper care becomes even more critical.

What the Agronomy Team Does

To combat these challenges, our agronomy team focuses on a few key winter maintenance practices:

• Aeration: Aerating the turf allows the soil to breathe, improving water drainage and promoting root growth.

• Topdressing: Adding a light layer of sand to the surface helps smooth the greens, protects the turf, and ensures optimal playability.

• Tree Maintenance: Winter is a perfect time for trimming trees to improve sunlight penetration and airflow across the course.

• Irrigation Adjustments: Even with winter rains, careful monitoring of water usage ensures the turf gets the moisture

it needs without overwatering.

• Cart Management: Limiting golf carts during wetter days helps prevent ruts and damage to fairways and rough.

How Members Can Help

Maintaining a beautiful course is a team effort. Here’s how you can play a role:

• Repair Divots and Ball Marks: Always fill divots in the fairways and repair ball marks on greens to help the turf recover faster.

• Respect Cart Rules: Please be mindful of where you take your golf cart. Avoid driving on thin or worn-out turf, and always adhere to on-course signage and wooden barriers.

• Be Mindful of Wet Areas: Avoid walking or driving through soft or muddy spots, as they can be easily damaged.

By working together, we can ensure that Birnam Wood remains as stunning and enjoyable in winter as it is throughout the rest of the year. We thank all members for their continued care and respect for the course—your efforts truly make a difference!

Happy New Year, everyone! Cheers to a great 2025!

New Equipment/Racquet Restringing

The new Babolat Pure Drive will be arriving in mid-January. Babolat’s flagship racquet has some of the highest ratings in speed, power, and spin. The updated 2025 version is now softer and more forgiving which previous models lacked. If you are in the market for a new racquet, I would seriously take a look at this one. Demos are available in the tennis shop.

Remember it is recommended to re-string your racquet the same number of times you play in a week, the same amount during the year. Meaning if you play 3 times a week, restring it 3 times a year. Over time strings lose their elasticity and resiliency and go dead. This means all the work goes to your arm which could cause tennis elbow. Please come to the proshop know if you have any questions about strings or grips. Scott & Jeff are here with a combined 50 years of professional service for you.

See you on the courts ~ Jeff

Remember… Persistence can change failure into extraordinary achievement.

FITNESS NEWS

New Year, New You! “Bee Healthy” 2025 Fitness Challenge

Last month, I wrote about making successful fitness goals. Now it’s time for your action plan! To review, your goals should be a) Specific, b) Positive and c) Attainable.

Start your 2025 Fitness Plan by writing down your goals for each of the following facets for your better health. Keep these actions simple and put them into your calendar so that you plan ahead for success.

If you are starting out or starting over, it is best to begin with shorter exercise sessions and build up duration and intensity over the following months. For example, a 15-minute bike ride plus 15-minutes of strength training with a 10-minute stretch session three times a week is a good start. Every four weeks, redo your goals to increase the length and difficulty of each segment or add an extra day with something different, like a group fitness class, hike in the hills or challenging AMT cardio machine.

Your Fitness Team is ready to help you with your goals, whether with group exercise classes or Personal Training. For assistance, contact me via the app (Personal Training Request) under Fitness & Wellness or jdumay@bwgc.net

1) Cardiovascular Conditioning: this is aerobic activity that elevates your respiration and perspiration. Walking is great, but adding a couple of days per week of high intensity interval training by bumping up your speed or hitting some hills will quickly improve your heart and lung function plus burn off more fat.

Let me know if you need instruction on any of the cardio machines or would like a “Walk the Wood” map to get a route on-campus –there are some hills here!

2) Strength Training: this can be a simple 30-minute session using machines, free weights or resistance bands three times a week. Strength training helps you function better in daily life with activities such as lifting, carrying, and climbing stairs. It also elevates your metabolism, as your increased muscle base burns calories even at rest.

Learn some moves in Marianna Sarkisova’s Cardio Sculpt classes on Mondays and Thursdays at 9:45 am.

3) Flexibility Focus: A simple way to begin is to add 10 minutes after your regular workout to release and relax your muscles. Challenge yourself by adding one of our Yoga classes to your weekly routine for expert guidance and a longer session to really deepen your stretching.

Lily Rohzko will be teaching Restorative Yoga in January on Mondays and Thursdays at 11:00 am and Wednesdays at 12 noon.

4) Diet: As far as your eating habits, you can also set goals that evolve and build on the previous month. Maybe you have a “dry January” without alcohol, in February you stop all sugar intake, and March is a “no white food” (basically all empty carbs). This is not about denying yourself delicious food and treats. It is about consciously taking charge of your body and health.

Chef Abdu has a great idea for our Bee Healthy event – help him create new menu items with ingredients you love and flavors you savor. I’ll take your input and coordinate with Chef for new additions in February.
