Parasitology Update by Lynne Garcia • Wednesday, May 8, 10:45 a.m.-11:45 a.m.
Lynne Garcia, MS, F(AAM), CLS, BLM, Director, LSG & Associates, one of the country’s best known and most knowledgeable parasitology experts, will present a comprehensive review of ordering, collection, and diagnostic methods (including molecular), organism recovery and identification (protozoa, coccidia, microsporidia), the importance of report comments, risk management issues (STATs, potential errors), and a practical approach to parasitic diagnostic options. The newer organism panels, including molecular vs. routine methods, will also be covered.
Ms. Garcia is the author of Diagnostic Medical Parasitology, one of the most comprehensive (over 1200 pages) reference books in the field of parasitology. She is the recipient of many prestigious awards, including being elected as a fellow in the American Academy of Microbiology, AAB’s 2007 William N. Reich Outstanding Achievement Award, and ASM’s 2009 bioMérieux Sonnenwirth Award for Leadership in Clinical Microbiology.
Ms. Garcia served on AAB’s Board of Scientific Advisors for many years and is still a consultant and scientific advisor to the AAB Proficiency Testing Program’s (now AAB-MLE Proficiency Testing Program’s) parasitology module.
Wastewater-Based Epidemiology by Charles P. Gerba, Ph.D. • Wednesday, May 8, 10:45 – 11:45 a.m.
“Dr. Germ”, aka Charles P. Gerba, Ph.D., is returning to AAB’s 2024 Educational Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, to speak about a public health screening system he helped develop and popularize: Wastewater-Based Epidemiology.
Dr. Gerba is best known for his work in environmental germ theory in the household, from which he earned the nickname “Dr. Germ.” In 2014 Dr. Gerba spoke at AAB’s Educational Program on the topic of “Reinventing Hygiene in the 21st Century: Where the Germs are in Everyday Life!”, and in January 2021 he presented a very popular AAB webinar on “Covid-19 Transmission Through the Environment and Tracking Down Cases Based on Wastewater Epidemiology.”
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Gerba’s team began testing wastewater from individual dormitories at the University of Arizona for the presence of Covid-19 virus. When negative, students in that dormitory did not need to be tested for Covid-19; when positive, students in the dormitory underwent additional testing to identify who was infected. This system allowed a large population of students to be monitored for Covid-19 without having to conduct tests on every student.
At this year’s AAB Conference, you will learn how wastewater-based epidemiology is being refined and used today in many more settings to detect and monitor infectious disease outbreaks, and to initiate public health efforts to isolate and contain the spread of infectious diseases.
Dr. Gerba has an international reputation for his methodologies for pathogen detection in water and food, pathogen occurrence in households, and risk assessment. He has authored over 500 journal articles and books and has been featured on numerous television programs and magazines. Dr. Gerba holds a Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Miami and is a professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona.

Laboratory Efficiencies by Dr. Liesl Nel-Themaat
Thursday, May 9, 2024, 4-5 p.m.
The IVF industry is growing rapidly. One effect of such expansion is a shortage in resources, most notably in clinic staffing. It is imperative that clinics identify areas to improve efficiency so that they can do “more with less.” Liesl Nel-Themaat, MBA, Ph.D., HCLD(ABB), IVF Laboratory Director and Associate Clinical Professor, Stanford University, will discuss the most significant areas for improving efficiencies in the modern IVF laboratory, including personnel (time management, team morale and commitment, streamlining of processes, and eliminating unnecessary procedures), supply management to reduce cost, and effective utilization of space. Dr. Nel-Themaat will look at finding the appropriate balance between operational efficiency and clinical effectiveness.
Validating Embryo Diagnostics by Dr. Richard T. Scott
Wednesday, May 8, 2024, 1:15-2:15 p.m.
The average embryo is not capable of implanting and progressing to delivery in any age group. Distinguishing those embryos that have no chance of sustained implantation from those that may be competent has led to several analytical tests. Validating those tests to determine
their prognostic accuracy is one of the greatest challenges in contemporary embryology research. Richard T. Scott Jr., MD, HCLD/ALD(ABB), Scientific Director, Foundation for Embryonic Competence, will present a comprehensive approach to validation in the context of contemporary testing.
pH Regulation in Oocytes by Brian LoManto
Wednesday, May 8, 2024, 2:15-2:45 p.m.
Brian LoManto, M.Sc., Scientific Director, EverieNorthstar Fertility, will discuss the importance of internal pH regulation in the human oocyte at the three major stages of maturity: GV, MI, and MII. He will review the research he performed to determine whether human oocytes at these various stages are able to manipulate their internal pH and, if they are able to manipulate the internal pH, what mechanism (transporter) is responsible for this activity.
Imaging the Preimplantation
Embryo by Dr. Rian Salasin Chrobocinski
Wednesday, May 8, 2024, 3:30-4:00 p.m.
How the early embryo forms using imaging is the focus of a presentation by Rian Salasin, Ph.D., Senior Embryologist, Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, University of Pennsylvania Health System.
