New WJTA Vacuum Technology Short Course
Page 2 www.wjta.org September 2022
The Vacuum Technology Short Course is intended for anyone with an interest in mobile vacuum equipment, including contractors, municipalities, asset owners, manufacturers, suppliers, consultants, researchers, and engineers. The curriculum is suitable for those new to the industry but presents material that will be valuable even for experienced industry veterans.
WJTA is introducing a comprehensive new preconference program covering industrial and municipal vacuum equipment, technology, safety, and applications. The short course will be held November 1, 2022, in New Orleans, prior to the November 2-3 WJTA Conference & Expo.
Preliminary topics include history of vacuum technology, equipment considerations, safety, grounding and bonding, efficient operations, automation, and sewer cleaning. The course will be held in-person on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, in New Orleans prior to the main conference and tradeshow activities of the WJTA Conference & Expo.

This course is modeled on the popular Waterjet Technology Basics & Beyond Short Course, which has been presented every two years in conjunction with the WJTA Conference since the 1980s. With the cancellation of the 2021 WJTA Conference & Expo, the waterjet short course was converted into a virtual presentation.
Environmental Solutions Group, general manager Jetstream of Houston, and co-chair of the short course organizing committee. "As we return to in-person meetings, this will be a great opportunity for attendees to make the most of their trip to New Orleans."
"The waterjet technology short course is always well received, so it makes sense to organize a similar program around vacuum technology," says Bill Krupowicz, WJTA board member, vice president Federal Signal
WJTA Conference & Expo website at www.WJTAExpo.com for up-to-date information on the Vacuum Technology Short Course and additional Conference/Expo details as they become available. ■
"Most WJTA contractor members offer industrial vacuuming, municipal sewer cleaning and vacuum excavation services," says David Beckum, WJTA board member, CEO of Augusta Industrial Services, and cochair of the short course organizing committee. "This comprehensive course for vacuum equipment theory, safety, and productivity is a valuable addition to the conference program."Visitthe

The tighter equipment supply chains make having strong connections within our industry more important than ever. These connections are strengthened through the memberto-member collaboration achieved through joining a trade organization like the WJTA. It also reinforces the importance of maintenance and operations best practices, so having strong organizational knowledge is very important.

Business
It’s safe to say that a strong majority of failed businesses were not members of their respective trade associations. The strategic advantage to joining a trade association is more obvious today than it’s ever been.
By Jimmy Peck, WJTA President/MPW GM of Industrial Services

joining a trade organization both individually and as a business has benefits above and beyond addressing supply chain issues. These include networking opportunities, joining a common voice that can influence the industry and protect business, the aforementioned knowledge of best practices (not just safety, but shared knowledge about business practices that can give members a competitive advantage) and the opportunity for leadership development.

Message from the President – The Importance of Trade Organization Membership and Attending Trade Shows
owners from nearly every industry are rediscovering the importance of being a member of a trade organization and attending trade shows. With historic supply chain issues and soaring inflation affecting every aspect of our lives, businesses involved in similar industries must work together to help each other find the best access to supplies at the best prices available.
Related businesses can benefit from networking by leveraging their combined assets and contacts to build business relationships with suppliers and vendors worldwide, while also developing camaraderie with their peers. Trade organization members can work together to create a positive business environment for the benefit of all members.Ofcourse,

Businesses are rediscovering the importance of trade shows as well. During the pandemic businesses did their best to connect to customers and potential customers electronically, but there’s been an overall drop in brand recognition since the pandemic began. We can do our best to sell brands through the various video chat programs, but there’s no substitute for the hands-on experience of a trade show.Allthe

isolation associated with the pandemic may have caused us to forget the importance of being faceto-face with our customers and enjoy a free discussion about products and services. Simply put, a trade show is the best place to gain first-hand knowledge and advice from people and companies in a similar line of work. This would be a good time to remind everyone of the upcoming WJTA 2022 Conference & Expo and new Industrial Vacuum Short Course, coming to the Morial Convention

If a hose fails either a thin water stream or a large amount of water exits under significant force. That force may last only a split second before dissipating, but if a worker is nearby when the hose fails, the water will come out with enough power to knock them off their feet. Imagine taking a kick to the stomach or leg. The force of the water, combined with the force from getting knocked to the ground, can cause fractures, ligament damage, and severe contusions. In Delaware a few years back an operator was standing near the pump hose when it burst. The force knocked him to the ground, and he was out of action over six months due to his injuries.
2. If the hose is touching the worker, water can penetrate his body and kill him.

All in all, it is much easier and smarter to follow key safety rules.

In the same manner a high-pressure water stream can penetrate your skin, so can a high pressure burst of water if the hose is next to your body. In 2011 a worker was manually shotgunning when a whip hose burst below his chest. The high-pressure water burst penetrated his body and damaged his internal organs. Sadly, he passed away within 90 minutes.
Not Using a Burst Resistant Shroud Where Needed
The #5 Rookie Mistake and How to Prevent It
Handheld waterjetting applications can range from 1,000 to 40,000 psi with a flow typically between 2 and 10 gpm. This combination results in a significant force that can cause a slug of water, which causes damage should a highpressure hose fail near a worker. Although high pressure hoses have burst ratings of 2.5 times the working pressure, time and wear and tear have led to many unexpected hose failures. Many waterjet safety training courses emphasize the dangers of high-pressure hose failures. Nonetheless some people become complacent with high pressure water jobs or don’t fully appreciate the force and impact high pressure water can have if hoses fail. This leads to the #5 Rookie Mistake and a severe type of waterjetting loss. Drum roll please…. the #5 Rookie Mistake is….
while and the hose has visible or broken braids. In order to save costs, there’s not a burst resistant shroud on the whip hose or pump hose and while the worker is close by the hose fails… When this happens one of two things usually occur…
Toolbox talks are important because they help improve awareness of the hazards and risks that could lead to workers getting hurt on the job. This is especially true with waterjetting since waterjet injuries almost always have the potential to be severe. Here is an important waterblasting toolbox talk topic.

Page 16 www.wjta.org September 2022
The shroud protects the worker from a whip hose burst.
High-pressure hose is placed next to the worker's body in manual shotgun operations.
Toolbox Talk: The #5 Rookie Mistake and How to Prevent It
During manual shotgun operations a high-pressure whip hose runs along the worker’s body from the shotgun to the pump. Perhaps the workers overbend and over stress the hoses, especially at the connections. During any type of hydroblast job a high pressure ‘pump hose’ runs from the manifold to the fluid end. Perhaps that hose hasn’t been changed out or inspected in a

Waterjetting is an efficient and cost-effective method for cleaning deposits and fouling on client equipment. By following these key rules and others found in the WJTA Orange Book, you can protect yourself from ‘Rookie Mistakes’ and keep your promise to your loved ones to get home safe.Next
1. Place lab tested, burst resistant shrouds on pump hoses and shotgun whip hoses.

Even with a shroud, when a pump hose fails it can sound like a gunshot. Even though the shroud should diffuse the water, it will still startle you. Without a shroud, standing next to the pump hose places you at high risk. There are many places to stand on a waterjet job…make sure that next to the pump hose is not one of them.
3. Don’t stand next to pump hose.
5. Follow manufacturers recommendations for hose use.

Too many workers overbend the hose, especially near the connections. Unfortunately, most failures occur near those connections because of the overbending. Kinking hoses is a concern as well since kinking the hose can damage the steel braids which help reinforce the hose. The 2011 hose failed at the connection and did not show signs of wear from the outside but had been weakened over time by dragging the hose around in a manner that placed extra weight and stress on the connection.
Burst resistant shrouds will diffuse a water burst when a hose fails and protect a worker from the severe damage they can cause. Reputable shroud vendors have tested their shrouds in lab settings and physically demonstrated that they can handle bursts up to 40K psi. These vendors are also happy to give you certificates of authenticity. In the event of a hose failure, these shrouds can mean the difference between going home that evening or not.

Manual waterjetting applications require placing high pressure hoses next to a worker’s body. Automated equipment allows the worker to stand a much safer distance away so that should a hose fail, they should be a safe distance away from the impact force.

Inspect hoses before each shift. If you see visible or broken braids, then that hose is a higher risk for failure. Also, perform a more formal inspection periodically to ensure hoses are fit for duty. Replacing an at-risk hose is so much less expensive (emotionally and financially) than dealing with the consequences of a hose failure.

The final rule, first initiated in a 2011 Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, concludes a trio of pipeline safety rules following PHMSA's 2016 proposed rulemaking for gas transmission and gathering pipelines. PHMSA issued a 2019 gas transmission final rule which addressed a number of congressional mandates and safety recommendations and a 2021 final rule that significantly expanded the scope of safety and reporting requirements for more than 400,000 miles of previously unregulated gas gathering lines. Today's final rule also marks a milestone of the completion of three of the six PHMSA measures in the U.S. Methane Reduction Action Plan.
"This is a great fit for both Terydon and StoneAge," said Terry Gromes Sr., president and founder of Terydon. "Our shared passion for technology and quality has made us industry leaders for decades. By joining forces, we will develop fully automated robotics systems that will continue to advance our industry. We are thrilled to be part of the StoneAge family of companies and look forward to what the future brings."
Built around their proprietary wireless control via touch-screen tablets, Terydon's "Smart Lunchbox Technology" promotes safety and enhanced productivity through fully automated, computerized, and remotecapable solutions.

The final rule establishes new standards for identifying threats, potential failures, and worst-case scenarios from an initial failure through conclusion of an incident. Based in part on recommendations from the National Transportation Safety Board, the rule:

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has published a final rule that will strengthen the safety and environmental protection on more than 300,000 miles of onshore gas transmission pipelines throughout the U.S. The final rule, first initiated 11 years ago, incorporates lessons learned through the investigation of the September 9, 2010, gas transmission pipeline incident in San Bruno, CA, which resulted in the death of eight people and injuries to more than 60 others.
With over twenty years of experience developing, designing, and implementing high-pressure waterjetting cleaning and cutting solutions, Terydon has been a key player in the industrial cleaning industry. Their reliable and practical knowledge will complement StoneAge and help drive a shared vision to advance the industrial cleaning industry through technology and data.

Vacuum Operator Foundational Training is the first segment of a two-part certification. The Vacuum Operator Field Verification is an instructor-led training and skills verification including both classroom and hands-on. The curriculum and checklists for Field Verification are currently being finalized, with the program rollout projected for later this year.
WJTA has released a new eLearning module in partnership with the Health and Safety Council (HASC). Vacuum Operator Foundational Training (19VACFT) is a 2.5-hour eLearning module based on the association's Recommended Practices for the Use of Industrial Vacuum Equipment (Blue Book).

Page 28 www.wjta.org September 2022
Successful completion requires an 80% passing score on the multiple-choice verification quiz, after which trainees receive the FT credential valid for three years. The 19VACFT curriculum will be reviewed and updated frequently to reflect any updates to WJTA's Blue Book.

Quickly attending to any of these hazards can improve productivity and compliance, and also help to reduce painful, costly accidents. The National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI) reports that slip and fall accidents result in over 1 million hospital visits each year. In addition, these accidents are the leading cause of worker’s compensation claims and occupational injuries for people 55 or older. At a time when having enough skilled people employed to get projects done is a luxury, the last thing that companies need is someone in the emergency room.
Universal mats absorb oils, coolants, solvents, and water.
Spills, drips, and leaks can happen anywhere on the job–by machinery, production lines, vacuum trucks, drum storage areas, and near the cafeteria fridge. Even a small puddle can lead to slip and fall accidents. In order to keep workers and visitors safe, it’s integral to maintain a clean facility that’s free of slip hazards.

• Universal sorbents are ideal for all-purpose cleanup for oils, coolants, solvents, and water-based fluids. They can be used around machinery, under leaky pipes, and in high traffic areas.
There are two key elements in choosing the proper spill control materials. The first is to know what type of liquid you’re containing and cleaning. The type of fluid will determine the type of sorbent material you use.

tired of being treated like I don’t have feelings or value. I can’t control my company’s decisions, but I am on the receiving end of customers’ anger and frustration. I don’t feel seen or heard by my company or our customers, and I dread going to work every day. The pay isn’t worth feeling bad about myself.”
Entrepreneurial Aspirations
Many who are leaving jobs are going to work for themselves. The WFH movement showed people could do much of their work from anywhere. Several people I spoke with summed it up like this: if I don’t have to be in an office to serve clients, why not go out on my own and perform the same work for similar clients? Others have always dreamed of working for themselves but felt the risk was just not worth it. And now that most households have two incomes, the benefits outweigh the risk of staying in a job where you are disengaged and
from the Wall Street Journal sums it up: “The number of unincorporated self-employed workers has risen by 500,000 since the start of the pandemic, Labor Department data show, to 9.44 million. That is the highest total since the financial-crisis year 2008, except for the summer of 2021. The total amounts to an increase of 6% in the self-employed, while the overall U.S. employment total remains nearly 3% lower than before the pandemic. Entrepreneurs applied for federal tax-identification numbers to register 4.54 million new businesses from January through October 2021, up 56% from the same period of 2019, Census Bureau data show. That was the largest number on records that date back to 2004. Two-thirds were for businesses that aren’t expected to hire employees.”
During the pandemic, many people began to reevaluate their work and life, especially when it came to
News stories of people quitting their jobs are everywhere, reporting that people are leaving for better opportunities or working for themselves. On the flip side, the news reports stories of unfilled positions and the impact of the labor shortage as companies scramble to find employees. But workers across the globe are putting their collective foot down, telling leaders loud and clear that they want better working conditions, pay and work-life balance. And with 11 million unfilled jobs in the U.S. alone, it’s evident that companies aren’t creating careers that people want.
Wanting to learn from the ‘Era of Resignation,’ I decided to ask my network what they thought. After talking with dozens of leaders and individuals, I’ve narrowed ‘The Great Resignation’ down to these reasons.
Finding purpose in our work is essential to thriving in life and the workplace. People want to know that their work matters in the bigger picture and aligns with their talents and skills. One gentleman I spoke to said, “If I am working 8-10 hours a day, I want to feel good about what I accomplished at the end of the day. But not just for the benefit of my company. I want to feel purposeful in my life – like I am doing something I am meant to be doing.” Statistics corroborate this. According to a Gallup poll, only four in ten employees strongly agree that the mission or purpose of their organization makes them feel their job is important. This statistic is not compelling, and it’s one business leaders need to focus on.
So what’s going on? Why are people leaving jobs? Why are they putting their collective foot down?

spending time with family. After traveling over 100K miles every year, I can relate. It was a reprieve to be at home with my family, month after month. I am never going back to that kind of travel; it’s too hard on my mind, body, and family. Additionally, I worked fewer hours to homeschool my son, and I realized the toll of working 60+ hours a week. My life improved dramatically during the pandemic, and I renewed my sense of self and family. I am not alone. Many of the people I spoke with said the same thing: “I am putting my family first. The health of my relationships is more important than grinding it out every day.” People left if their jobs didn’t fit with their newfound family-first purpose.

Notice that most of these reasons have nothing to do with pay. While compensation is important, pay is not the primary reason people leave. Employees want healthy workplaces that offer flexibility and autonomy – they want to choose where and when they work. They want to work for companies that value and respect them. People want to work in businesses where customers aren’t abusive and rude. Business leaders must start addressing the root causes of these issues and commit to authentically recreating their culture and relationships with their employees. Those who don’t will be left behind.

The new Athletic Design includes a lot of new design elements to improve the clothing’s compliance. For example, the protective areas, with Dyneema®, have been divided into several parts to better follow the body's movements and a wedge-shaped part has been inserted in the armpit area to provide the garments with increased mobility. The trousers and overalls have both been equipped with pre-bent knees for added flexibility and all areas without protection are made of a stretch fabric for both increased mobility and comfort.

operators begin to prepare for the project. One of the operators is Kjell Petersson. He puts on both the red jacket and trousers from TST Sweden’s new collection of protective clothing, EliteOperator. After walking around for a while, he nods in approval and says, “They are easier to put on and easier to move around in."
TST Sweden's EliteOperator is the company´s next generation of ultra-high pressure clothing. The new product line has the same high level of protection as their previous top of the line clothing (3,000 bar / 43,500 psi), but with a whole new level of comfort and freedom of movement. The new products have been made possible thanks to TST's new technique and philosophy, Athletic Design, which makes it easier to walk, bend down, crouch, bend arms and legs, squat, climb ladders, walk stairs and everything else an operator does during a work shift.
Lidköping Energi's heating plant is located by the shores of Vänern, Sweden's largest lake. The heating plant produces heat and electricity from waste and supplies district heating to 60% of industries and 95% of households in Lidköping's urban area, which has 26,000 inhabitants. The steam generated in the process produces electricity sufficient for 5,000 households.
Group was commissioned to remove the concrete from the heating plant. In the industry since 2010, the company has approximately 800 employees in Sweden and Finland and offers services including waterjetting, sludge suction, and chemical cleaning.

and other safety gear help protect the operator from concrete fragments, soot, dirt, and water. The water used to remove the concrete holds a pressure of 2,800 bar / 40,000 psi and demands a lot from the operator. This is the exact opposite of a day in an air-conditioned office, sitting on an ergonomic chair in front of a computer with a hot cup of coffee. Waterjetting is tough, strenuous work, which requires body mass, strength, and endurance.

Kjell: I usually don’t think about comfort when I’m working. So, they’re probably comfortable, because I guess I would think about it if the clothes weren’t comfortable.

TST: Who decides which products you should use?
To make maximum use of the ventilation a continued airflow of 250–400 L/minute (9–14 CFM) at 7 bar is required. Also, smaller compressors can be used if there is a possibility to regulate the airflow.
If compressed air is not an option, then TST's Cooling Vest is a good alternative. The vest absorbs heat from the body and provides an effective, but gentle cooling. The technology is unique and based on special energy TEMPTECH® elements. The elements absorb heat form the body, providing an effective and gentle cooling for 90 minutes at 60°C and four hours at 45°C. The elements recharge without an external energy source: 2–3 hours in 22°C, 30 minutes in 8°C and just 5–10 minutes in a freezer or in iced water.
Adam: You get sweaty. But that comes from your body. On the outside, the clothes stopped the water, so in that sense I stayed dry.
The overall is unfortunately often used without a vest. It is good to keep in mind that TST's overall has no protection on the upper body. It must therefore be used together with theSomeonevest.

who knows what it's like to be hit by a waterjet is Adam. A few years ago, he had an accident when he unintentionally shot himself in the foot with a waterjet at 800 bar/11,600 psi. He wore ordinary rubber boots on his feet without any added protection. A colleague had to drive Adam to the hospital. The sharp beam made only a small hole in the boot and the wound was not large either. However, due to the risk of infection by injecting contaminated water with a waterjet, the doctors had to make a 15 cm long incision on each side of the lower leg to drain the dirty water and clean the wound. Following the accident, Adam had to stay in the hospital for a week before he finally could go home again. This is a clear reminder on how important it is to use the right protective equipment when working with waterjetting.

We rely on concrete for many aspects of life – the roads we drive on, the dams that help produce power or control flooding, and structures that form our cities, to name a few. This durable, versatile, cost-effective material has had incredible importance to civilizations for centuries. Yet we’re aware production of the material uses a lot of energy and affects the environment. To date, however, there is not a viable alternative. But one way to have our concrete and to be conscious of sustainability, too, is to restore existing concrete structures.
Hydrodemolition offers an ideal method of repair, extending and optimizing the life of the concrete while minimizing waste.

Finally, concrete isn’t the only thing that can be recycled. The water used in the hydrodemolition process can also be treated and reused. Some hydrodemolition manufacturers have developed advanced water treatment technology. The blast water is captured and treated in a fully automated, high-capacity system that neutralizes the pH and reduces suspended solids from 15,000 to 20-40 mg/L. Some of the blast water is lost through evaporation, but 80% to 90% can be captured and treated. Clean, treated water can then be discharged into the environment or reused for the however,reusinganfootprint,toindustryinButchangeThatandrolejobsites.haulreducesconsumption,doesprocess.hydrodemolitionNotonlythisreducewateritalsotheneedtowaterinandoutofConcreteplaysamajorinourdailyliveshasforcenturies.isn’tlikelytoanytimesoon.thoseofusinvolvedtheconstructionarecalleduponreduceourecologicalandthatisnoteasytask.Theideaofandrecycling,canbeapplied
leaving sound concrete intact and ready for new material to be applied. Exciting new technology in concrete recycling is even making it possible to reuse the slurry produced from hydrodemolition. A specialty chemical company has developed a new process that incorporates old concrete into new concrete mixes, providing similar performance to traditional material. Minimal removal coupled with the ability to effectively recycle what is removed is a big step toward sustainability.
Making Concrete More Sustainable Through Restoration

by Keith Armishaw, Business Development Manager, Aquajet
Hydrodemolition offers the most ideal method of repair, extending and optimizing the life of the concrete structures while minimizing waste. Hydrodemolition uses high-pressure waterjets to precisely remove concrete. The impact-free process eliminates microfractures that jeopardize the integrity of a structure while also cleaning and descaling rebar without damaging it. In addition to precise removal, hydrodemolition leaves behind a rough, craggy surface that provides an ideal texture for bonding new material. Independent pull-off tests show that the bonding strength achieved through hydrodemolition is much higher than that of jackhammers or other mechanical methods. According to the Swedish Cement and Concrete Research Institute, using hydrodemolition for concrete repair results in a life expectancy of 21-35 years versus 7-12 years with mechanicalHydrodemolitionchiseling.technology
Concrete isn’t the only thing that can be recycled. Aquajet’s EcoClear neutralizes the pH and reduces suspended solids in blast water, so that it can be reused for the hydrodemolition process.
Hydrodemolition robots can be programmed to remove only unsound concrete, which minimizes waste.
also enables a very selective removal process, eliminating unnecessary waste. By using a lower water pressure, a hydrodemolition robot will remove only the concrete that is defective, damaged or deteriorated,

Productive output and health and safety awareness are areas that have been and are particularly attractive to the industries of manufacture and coating in terms of progression. Over the years Glindemann Industrial Coatings has continuously adapted to the international modernization and progress within their industry of specialty.Australia
Looking for the best equipment for the project, Glindemann reached out to BlastOne Australia in early 2020, inquiring about the VertiDrive M7 magnetic robotic crawler. Glindemann investigated various cleaning methods that would allow his company to advance and make a

and speed are important for business owners. Hundreds of manufacturing and coating businesses are currently operating within the region, and more and more continue to open doors to service and compete within the ever-growing needs of the state. Competition is obviously high for Glindemann Industrial Coatings, and with top level service required to attract clients, progression and modernization prove to be key factors to providing such services.
In 2020, IOR Petroleum presented Glindemann Industrial Coatings with the challenge of converting an existing crude oil tank (floating roof) into a diesel storage tank within a time frame of 18 days with a team of eight workers. Tasks included the safe and efficient removal of the existing crude oil residues within the 22 m high x 56 m wide tank and to clean the internal walls of the tank, top to bottom, to prepare for the diesel to be contained within. Productivity, high level health and safety, and maintaining budgets were all subjects of importance to both Glindemann Industrial Coatings and IOR Petroleum.
• Foam application services.
Mr. Glindemann said, “This is the first job that I have used VertiDrive’s equipment and with its ease of use, productivity, and financial savings for the client, I am absolutely thrilled to see what the possibilities are for the future. I am an owner and operator with no employees and (with this equipment) I can run my business in a safe, manageable, and efficient manner.”
Following completion of the project, Glindemann shared his experience using the Vertidrive M7 magnetic crawler. The cleaning of the IOR Petroleum crude oil tank was completed four days early within a timeframe of 14 days in total. Without staff physically required to work at height, the danger of the cleaning was minimized and a team of three workers, reduced from eight, was all that was necessary to complete the cleaning. The VertiDrive M7 magnetic crawler itself produced a thorough and consistent clean with its 20,000 psi (around 1,400 bar) – 22 lpm of water pressure produced.

Intrigued and ready to take his business to the next level, Glindemann rented the Vertidrive M7 model and put the crawler to immediate use cleaning and de-oiling (de-oiling into an approved 20 ft container) the crude oil tank, which would then be converted to a diesel storage tank.

I am sure you have run across the odd manager whose skill set is perfectly suited to running a tight ship, but what about the rest of us? It is important to recognize that an effective inventory management program comes in many different forms and having a realistic assessment of your team and your culture is the key to choosing the form that will be most beneficial for your situation. It is also a good idea to be aware that any major changes you make are likely to be disruptive in the short run, and that you should be willing to give any change some time to prove itself.
There are trade-offs inherent in each of these models. VMI frees you from responsibility, but it costs more, and usually obligates you to buy exclusively from the vendor providing the service. You will still have to police your supplier’s rep to make sure he does not abuse your trust and start “stuffing” your bins with excess inventory as a means of padding their commission. Assuming your vendor is honest and competent, this method is still more cost-effective than the unmanaged scenario described above.
Also significant is the programmable minimum/maximum settings that will trigger purchases of items before you run out of them. This greatly reduces the incidence of emergency supply runs, and most of us can agree that that kind of excitement is a thrill we can live without.
CMI can save you a lot of money if you are disciplined in your management, and you are not obliged to buy everything from the same supplier. The trade-off is that you do have to put in the time to keep your storeroom organized and keep count of inventory levels.
Inventory Management and the Internet of Things
There are many variations on these models, and the last few decades has brought a flood of innovation, thanks to technology. The most visible of these innovations is vending. Vending brings advantages not possible with a manual supply system. You suddenly have an accurate real-time count of your inventory that is updated “in the cloud” every time something is dispensed. Consumables like gloves or other PPE experience a noticeable decline in consumption by controlling both shrink and frivolous use. Team members instinctively cut back on their consumption because they are no longer anonymous when they punch in their unique passcode to access the items they are using.
With automated inventory counts comes enhanced reporting. You can pull usage reports and see consumption history. Knowledge is power; access to this data on a granular level allows you to forecast needs and spot trouble areas with more precision than ever before.
Keeping your business supplied with consumables and MRO parts is a necessary component of doing business. It is not something you necessarily have to devote too much attention to if you do not want to, but the less organized you are about it, the more interesting life can become.
VMI vs. CMI
Choosing the inventory management best suited to your culture.
By interesting, I mean wasted hours spent scouring your facility to find the item you need when you can least afford the time to do so, and unscheduled trips to the store to buy an item that nobody seemed to notice was running low. Add the burden of dealing with surpluses of items that were brought in through misbegotten circumstances, leaving you with a 15year supply of 5-XL SMS suits, among other white elephants.
involves your supplier’s representative making regularly scheduled visits to your storerooms, counting stock levels, and placing orders on your behalf to replenish your bins on the next visit.
Inventory Management – Empowering Your Supplies
If you have more confidence in your team’s abilities and like the freedom that comes with calling the shots, you will gravitate more towards a selfmanaged model, which is often called customer-managed inventory (CMI).
By David Miller, HUB Industrial Supply page 42
If your situation closely matches the scenario described above and you have little optimism that it will ever change, the best choice for you would be to delegate the whole thing to your supplier. This is what is known as vendor-managed inventory (VMI). The classic version of this model

For many companies, inventory control is managed with a notebook and pencil.

Any time you attempt to transition from a manual system to a machine-based system, there is an onboarding period that is going to feel at times like flying by the seat of your pants. Management from top to bottom, as well as those who will be interacting with the system, must be willing to table their apprehensions during this transition and follow the plan. Those steps that do not make sense now will sharpen into focus in short order. An experienced provider will be skilled in training your team and giving you all the help you need to get off to a good start. They will remain in close contact to help you solve issues that come up to ensure you get the full benefit of the system.

Larger format items require a locker-style of machine, akin to what you might find at a home improvement
This brings to light one more consideration for users contemplating a VMI scenario: There will likely be parts or inventory that you want to bring in outside of your contract with your principal vendor. Either they do not offer what you need, or they are wildly uncompetitive on some things. So, you find a better source and bring it in on your own. You will want to ask who is going to be managing that foreign inventory?
Once you are up and running, it will be up to you to put in the effort to keep the system working properly. The more attentive your team is to follow the protocols, the better you can trust that all of the powerful information now at your fingertips can be trusted to be accurate. A team that puts in the effort to religiously follow the protocols will soon find the system requires roughly the same amount of time to manage as the system it replaced, yet the information now available to you will leave you wondering how you ever got along without it.
Vending is considered a form of VMI, and the downsides of VMI apply here. The machines are costly, and most users opt to have the machines provided by the supplier in exchange for a minimum purchase agreement. Not only will you be required to meet your side of that agreement, but you will not be afforded the option of having the machines dispensing items from sources other than the supplier you have contracted with.
The CMI world has a variety of approaches that borrow from the benefits of vending. The use of bar code readers, weight-sensitive bins, RFID sensors, electronic authentication, and video monitoring have all been employed in pursuit of enriching the self-managed experience. It is now possible to self-manage supplies in a way that allows you the autonomy of the CMI model and still enjoy the real-time inventory status updates, low-stock alerts, reporting, security, and accountability that has made vending such an attractive option. What is required in return? Training and discipline.

superstore that has an automated propane tank exchange system. Each locker contains one item; each locker is secured by a door with an electronic lock that unlocks when the proper credentials are supplied.
Other limitations to the classic vending model are the number of items you can vend. The typical vending machine is the coil-style format like machines that dispense candy and chips. These work great for dispensing gloves and other items that can be individually packaged in compact, vendable forms. The number of slots available determines the number of SKUs you can dispense. Keep in mind each size of glove will require its own slot.

example installation is situated in two secured storerooms. One storeroom services the shop and contains spare parts, tools, and safety items. The other storeroom services the operations and contains PPE, spill kits, and other items of use to the operations crew. Both rooms are accessible by means of a biometric lock. Unlike a vending machine, there is no finite number of SKUs that can be added to your storeroom.
Each team member has been set up as a user to one or both storerooms. Some users have been granted a higher permission level than others, giving
The system is also tracking the usage history of each hose by its unique barcode, and the hose will be retired after a preset number of uses. She exits the storeroom with her equipment, and the video recording ends.
Over time, it is inevitable that the accuracy of the system will begin to drift due to the accumulation of small input errors and the like. This is why the protocol includes an operation known as cycle counting. Cycle counting is a housekeeping task that can be tackled a few minutes every week where a designated team member systematically counts every item in the storeroom and corrects any discrepancies. If a small section of the storeroom is cycle-counted every week, the entire inventory can be reviewed every 90 days. Other problems can be addressed by reviewing a log of errors recorded by the system and manually adjusting data based on the information provided by the log.
To best illustrate what a CMI inventory management system can look like, I will draw on my knowledge working with HUB Industrial Supply’s proprietary Inventory IQ system for the past five years. Since the system is customizable, other users may have features different from those described here. The

entrance to the shop storeroom, a team member enters the room and picks up a barcode scanner, touching the screen next to her name. Five video cameras begin recording security footage from various angles. The team member picks out a face shield from a bin and scans the barcode to remove it from the storeroom. She picks up a blast hose from its hook and, using the checkout function, she scans the barcode with the same scanner to “borrow” the blast hose. An e-mail is automatically sent to her supervisor notifying him that she has borrowed the blast hose. Another e-mail will be sent in 3 days if she fails to return it.

As new employees are introduced to the system, they need to be trained to use it properly. In a company that sees frequent turnover of employees, it may be preferable to limit the access to managers, supervisors and team leaders who can be relied on to check out items for the team to ensure that your inventory counts remain accurate.
In summary, there are as many methods of managing inventory as there are ways to wear your hair, and the best way for your operation to do it can be just as personal. There are clear and powerful benefits from using technology to do it, but only if you are prepared to commit to making it work.

Although each user is identified by biometric authentication upon entry into the storeroom and their movements are recorded to video, it is still up to the user to properly record each item they take out with the barcode scanner. This differs from a vending machine experience, where each item taken out is inaccessible until the transaction is recorded. This difference has a number of consequences, both positive and negative, but at minimum it requires training and conscientious discipline of each user. In situations where compliance is difficult due to high rates of turnover, the best practice is to limit access to the storeroom to supervisory team members, who can distribute the needed items to the end user.
Centrally located just south of downtown Peoria, the branch is fully staffed and equipped with industrial service equipment, including waterblasting and automation tooling, vacuum trucks, and support equipment.

Superior Environmental Solutions Opens Service Branch in Peoria, IL
“From this new location, industrial services crews are able to serve the whole of central Illinois, including Peoria, Bloomington, Springfield and Davenport,” said Superior Environmental Solutions Vice President of Industrial Services Blake Brown.
Fifteen minutes later, a manager logs into the company account in preparation to place a supply order. He surveys the list of items that the system has flagged for reorder. On this list are items to be reordered from HUB as well as nonHUB items that the system also has been set up to track. One of the items on the list is the face shield that the team member just removed; the removal of one face shield left the on-hand inventory below the minimum established for that item. The manager opts to select all the HUB items on the list and the order is placed. He will have to re-order the non-HUB items separately.
When a transaction occurs that causes an error, there is a review process to correct it. For example, if the system incorrectly shows the inventory level of an item to be less than the amount being taken out, it will show up as an error. Videos of every transaction are accessible by finding the transaction on the report and clicking a link to access the files. ■
Superior Environmental Solutions (SES), a leading provider of environmental, industrial, emergency response and product destruction services in the Midwest, has opened its newest regional industrial services branch in Peoria, Illinois, broadening its geographic reach to fill a previously underserved region.
In the other storeroom, a manager prepares to put away a shipment of supplies just received from HUB. After verifying counts, he takes the scanner and scans the barcode on the bill of lading. The scanner screen displays every item on the bill of lading. He selects OK to receive in all the items into the system and returns the items to their bins. At any given time, any manager can pull up information about stock levels, usage patterns, and which user took out what. Regional managers have access to information from multiple sites. Items taken out can be flagged for use to a specific job and reports can be filtered to break out the data by user, job, or other criteria.
The new branch will provide vacuum, waterblasting, sponge blasting, and bin whipping services. “All
