Welcome Bowen Island Community Recreation, Community Learning and the Bowen Island Arts Council (BIAC) have once again teamed up to present programming for the 2015 Spring & Summer Sessions. We invite you to take a look through this brochure to discover opportunities for learning, developing your creativity, becoming more fit or exploring new pursuits. As a result of your feedback we’ve organized the brochure by age categories, and then generally under three major sections: Learning, Arts & Recreation. Not only will you discover classes, workshops and other learning opportunities, you’ll discover special events and activities, community resources and other helpful information. While our printed brochure is up-to-date and accurate at the time of printing, please also refer to the on-line digital version on our website for our latest offerings and most up-to-date details. The Bowen Island Community Recreation office (BICR) is located on 1041 Mt Gardner Road, in a joint use facility with the Bowen Island Community School (BICS). Facilities at the school include a gymnasium, weightroom, multipurpose rooms, and a kitchen. General Info & Policies

Important to Note: Registration Spring registration opens March 3, 2015. Summer regisration opens April 30, 2015. Online Registration: www.bowencommunityrecreation.com Payment in full is required at time of registration by cash, credit, debit or cheque. Cheques should be made out to: Bowen Island Municipality (BIM).

Refund Policy Program Cancellation: A full refund will be issued for classes cancelled by Community Recreation (pro-rated if into the session). No administration fee will apply. Requests for Refunds:

• Program and daycamp refunds will be issued if received a minimum of five (5) business days prior to the start of the program. The administration fee will apply. • A pro-rated refund will be issued if withdrawal occurs two (2) business days prior to the second class. No refunds will be issued after that time except for medical reasons (doctors note required). The administration fee will still apply. Administration Fee: A 10% or $25 administration fee, whichever is less, will apply to the pro-rated amount for all refunds. Refunds will be issued by credit to account for future use or, at your request, by mailed cheque. Please allow up to 2 weeks for cheque processing.

Holidays The office and weightroom are closed and most programs are not scheduled to run on Statutory holidays and some holiday weekends. Please call ahead or check program listing.

First Nations and Friends Art Club (All ages. Parent participation mandatory for those under 8 yrs) Each month try a different art activity with artist Gerald Morrisseau that explores First Nations and Celtic traditions and cultures. Almost all materials used in this program are reused or donated materials. *NEW DATE: March 26!, April 23, May 28. This is a free, monthly program held at BICS in the MPR. Parent participation is welcomed for all of the classes, and is mandatory for youth under age 8. Young Farmers of Bowen (Individual Sessions for 7-9 yrs & 10+ yrs) The Young Farmers of Bowen will run two programs this year for age 7-9 and age 10+. Families with youth interested in this program must attend a program meet-up information session before applying to participate. Please register your interest in this program by registering to attend a meet-up/info session April 12 Sunday 1-2pm at the OLC at BICS. This free program teaches youth how to grow a pizza garden from the seed to the plate, agricultural service and work practices, experiences with micro finance and working at the farmers market, and wraps up with a movie and pizza-making evening in which students will make pizzas using ingredients they have grown themselves. Some parent participation is needed to ensure the success of this program. Instructor: Location:

Community All Ages Red Cross Babysitter’s & Home Safety Certificate (11-15 yrs) Red Cross Babysitter’s & Home Safety Certificate in a Day, for youth age 11-15. This interactive day program teaches youth how to stay safe at home, basic first aid, how to contact emergency services as well as how to care for children in the role of mothers’ helpers and as babysitters. The day includes guest visits from babies and local emergency service representatives. Instructors Ellie Mackay and Amanda Ockeloen. Homework Club The Homework Club is a free, drop-in program open to students who want to work independently, or with peers on homework, school projects and reading. Any subject, any type of project is welcome. Grade 8-12 volunteer peer tutors may be available on some days to provide additional homework help 4-5pm. The Homework Club facilitator supervises the program and provides the snack.Participants are required to fill out the Homework Club Agreement Form with their parents. Participants who do not adhere to the focus of the Homework Club may be asked to leave the program (it is not a babysitting service.) Foodsafe Level 1 (12+ yrs) Foodsafe Level 1 is required for food handlers by the Ministry of Health when working in the foodservice industry. This one day course will cover topics including microbiology and personal hygiene. Be job-ready, prepare food safely at home, prepare foods safely to sell them at craft fairs and markets! Just Paint! Join us for this informal gathering of artists of all levels who want to spend time painting together. Acrylic, watercolour, oil, drawing -- anything goes. A great way to escape with some friendly aspiring artists for a few hourse of colour and creativity. Drop-in from 10 am - noon on Sundays at the Gallery. Join us for this socially creative evening, combining a little art and lots of fun. Artist/ teacher Janet Esseiva will lead a two hour step-by-step acrylic painting class, at the end of which you will have a masterpiece to take home. No experience requried! Playcare Child-minding (0-5 yrs) Playcare is a program offered by Bowen Island Community Recreation every weekday morning in the Community Use Room at Bowen Island Community School (BICS). Young children from newborns to five year olds are cared for in a loving environment full of toys, books, puzzles, and play dough. Parents can confidently leave their children for up to three hours on a pre-booked or drop-in basis to attend a fitness class, go for a walk, or just catch up with friends. Bookings are needed to ensure space for your children. Drop ins are taken on a space available basis. Closed on Statutory holidays. 10% discount on rates if parent is attending registered program or using the weightroom during this time. Goose on the Loose (0-4 yrs)

The Mother goose Program, is a free ParentChild Mother Goose program for parents and caregivers and their newborn to two year old children. Using interactive storytelling, rhyme and song, this beneficial, friendly, free, program includes a snack.

Goose on the Loose: family circle time, social and sing-along: rhymes, stories and time for parents to connect and practice what they enjoyed as part of the Mothergoose program. The program runs at FAMILY PLACE which is below the Bowen Children’s Centre at 650 Carter Road.

Do you want to learn how to shoot a bow and arrow? This is a great place to begin! You will learn archery safety, the parts of a bow and arrow, and how to fire consistently so you hit a target. Adults welcome.

Ready to get your sport on? Calling all Grade 6-7 boys to come join for a multisport adventure. Each week we will focus on cross training and new sport. On the last day of the session we will have a round robin tournament of all the various sports!

Heros vs Monsters (9-12 yrs) How do superheroes look so “super”? Nothing but net...calling all boys ages 9-12 interested in getting a jump start on their basketball and volleyball skills. The sessions will focus on basic basketball and volleyball fundamentals through drills, activities and games. We will work at not only improving our skills in the game but also our fitness.

The Complete Player Camp is an excellent opportunity for players of a variety of skill levels to improve their overall games. The camp is structured to give each player a challenging selection of drills and habit-building exercises that will improve their “complete� game. Clinics will include shooting the ball properly from various positions on the court, ball handling and dribbling skills, passing, defending on the perimeter and in the post, the pick and roll game and rebounding.

Join roller hockey to learn the basic fundamentals of roller hockey. The sessions will focus on proper progression and proper technique of skating, passing, shooting and game basics. Players will learn new skills and drills along with building sportsmanship and teamwork. Come get your blood pumping, sweat going and have some fun.

Your child’s heart will be pumping and the sweat flying during these friendly scrimmages. Rollerblading and hockey skills and drills are a part of the fun.Your child must come equipped with rollerblades, helmet with a cage, knee and elbow protection, and gloves.

Come join for a week long full of rollerhockey fun. Each day there will be a focus on a different skill such as: skating forwards, backwards, crossovers, shooting, stickhandling, passing and scoring. Come prepared for fitness training daily and various games throughout the week. If the weather is nice we will head to the beach. Players must come prepared with rollerblades, helmet, shoes and beach attire.

Tiny Tot Tennis for 4-5yrs olds. This class will focus on developing a solid foundation of coordination skills that include running, jumping, throwing, catching and racquet handling; these skills are essential for future success in tennis and are transferable to other sports.

Goran Milosevic Goran has been delivering tennis programs to the Bowen Island community for the past 9 years. He is dedicated to raising participation in the sport and increasing involvement with the game of tennis from an early age. Goran strives towards being a leader on the Court and is committed to keeping up with current coaching techniques.

Swimming 2015 (Lesson Lottery) Space is limited in swimming lessons on Bowen Island. In order to ensure a fair process we use a lottery system to create classes. Lottery forms are available at the Recreation Office and on our webiste on April 10th and are due to be returned by April 24th by 4:30pm at the Recreation Office or by email. Vinyasa means “breath-synchronized movement”. Andrea Clark recently moved to Bowen Island from Vancouver. She teaches yoga full-time at Nectar Yoga B&B on Bowen Island, at Bowen Island Yoga, at various studios in Vancouver, and at exotic yoga retreats around the globe. She is grateful to share her 8 years of teaching experience with the Bowen Island community

I was drawn to yoga over 15 years ago for its many benefits. I received a BA from UBC in anthropology with a focus on East Indian religion and philosophy and in 2009 was certified 200 YTT. I continue to learn from yoga and have studied with many master teachers from around the world. I believe in the power of yoga to create positive change in body and mind through encouraging strength, focus, balance, flexibility and openness.Yoga makes me feel good and it is a pleasure to share it with students who begin to stand stronger and feel better.

BOWEN ISLAND GYMNASTICS Spring Schedule 2015 Bowen Island Gymnastics Club (BIGC) offers a wide variety of recreational and competitive gymnastics programs for participant’s ages 14 months to adult. All programs promote safety, self-esteem, skill development, friendships and FUN!!!!
