our MISSION

We ignite girls’ passion and power to succeed through positive mentoring relationships with women and enrichment programs that support girls’ healthy development.

LEADERSHIP

Dear Friends,

Last year marked a period of big change for Big Sister Boston. We celebrated the 16-year legacy of leadership left by outgoing President & CEO, Deb Re, while we looked to the future of our organization and our Little Sisters. Through funding partnerships, we hired a Coordinator of Big for a Day to grow the program that engages Little Sisters from the time they are enrolled, and we hired members of our Junior Advisory Board (teen Big and Little Sisters) as summer interns. We held more in-person activities for our Big and Little Sisters when it was safe to do so. We brought back in-person fundraising events for the first time since 2019. And you, our Big Sister Boston community, showed up. You showed up for us and you showed up for the girls.

Through it all, we know that it remains a critical time for girls. Recent research from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) shows that teens, especially girls, are experiencing more violence, suicidal thoughts, and mental health challenges than ever before. Dr. Debra Houry, the CDC’s Chief Medical Officer and Deputy Director for Program and Science said: “America’s teen girls are engulfed in a growing wave of sadness, violence and trauma.” Experts have cited mentorship programs as one intervention that can address this alarming trend.

In 2022, 1,146 girls had the care, guidance, and support of a relationship with a trusted adult, a Big Sister. You – our volunteers, funders, and partners – made this possible. Our staff expertly navigated the changing landscape for girls, providing professional coaching to our Big Sisters, Little Sisters, and Little Sisters’ families. Additionally, we engaged in a range of initiatives to support our ongoing commitment to ensure that our staff, board, and volunteers represent the diverse communities we serve and that we continue to learn and grow together.

We saw what is possible for our Little Sisters in the stories of alumnae Leila and Migleila, featured at Big in Boston. Both young women benefited from long-term mentoring relationships that have become life-long adult friendships. Both are financially independent and continue to work toward their individual goals with the encouragement of their Big Sisters. Both represent the future.

Throughout the changes of 2022, our commitment to the girls and women of Greater Boston has remained steadfast. We will continue to evolve to meet the needs of girls and women; innovating programming and re-envisioning what is possible for their futures. Thank you for being part of this journey into her big future with us.

In gratitude,

CAR RAFFLE SOLD OUT. 1,951 TICKETS!

First-time ticket buyer, Tara Reddington, was the grand prize winner of our 34th Annual Car Raffle! When a friend shared the raffle information with Tara, who says she “never wins anything,” Tara knew immediately that she had to enter this year’s raffle. Tara’s daughter passed away three years ago, and her birthday was the same day as the raffle. Her daughter’s favorite color had been purple. When Tara saw that we were raffling off a purple car and the winner would be drawn on her daughter’s birthday, she asked for a sign…and she got it.

We brought back Winter Wonderland and our Summer Picnic for the first time since 2019!

Over the summer, six Junior Advisory Board members worked for Big Sister as part of a paid internship program!

Teens participated in financial literacy workshops, career exposure opportunities at local companies, team building and training, and developed a strategic plan to grow participation, community, and fundraising campaigns.

HOLIDAY GIVING 2022 WAS A SUCCESS!

The Big Sister community raised $4,850 to purchase gift cards for 122 families. We also received 43 coats for Little Sisters through our Coat Drive!

Big in Boston honors Deb Re’s 16 years of LEADERSHIP

8 annual report 2022 BIG SISTER BOSTON

On October 27, 2022, we joined in community with more than 300 friends to celebrate the end of an era of Deb Re’s leadership as President & CEO and looked to the future of Big Sister Boston! Big in Boston: Her Big Future, held at The Grand in Boston served not only as our annual fundraising gala, but as an opportunity to toast Deb as she retired after 16 years at the helm of Big Sister.

Featured during the evening were remarks from Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, herself a Big Sister alumna, and Governor Charlie Baker and First Lady Lauren Baker – all long-time supporters of Big Sister Boston. Emcee, Lisa Hughes of WBZ-TV/CBS Boston read heartfelt letters of appreciation to Deb from U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh and Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and her daughter Chelsea.

During the program, Little Sisters and teen members of our Junior Advisory Board, whose stories were shared via video and on stage, told us why they are the future. Teen Big Sister Jasmine, said:

The evening culminated in a roast and toast of Deb, and the presentation to her of the Deborah Re Believe in Girls award in honor of her 16 years of service to our organization.

It was a night to remember! A special thank you to all our Big in Boston guests and those who gave to the Her Big Future Fund campaign for showing up for Greater Boston’s girls and women: they are the future.

HOW WE MEASURE

We measure the results of our mentoring programs with the Youth Outcomes Survey (YOS), a research-based tool developed by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) in conjunction with experts in the field of mentoring. These measurements are applied to our Community-Based Mentoring (CBM) program and our Site-Based Mentoring program (SBM).

We include maintenance of positive outcomes along with improvements in our overall measures, which indicate that Little Sisters are developing resiliency and healthy interpersonal skills. We have a long history of scoring at or above the 75% on the YOS. Since the pandemic and particularly over the last year, however, we have experienced challenges with low survey completion rates. In turn, the fewer surveys we collect, the more volatile the statistics. As a result, this outcome data is not typical of Big Sister Boston’s historical outcomes. This tool processes YOS data using the Reliable Change Index to determine meaningful change in scores. Because the index incorporates a margin of error and can determine between “significant improvement” and “trending toward significant improvement” in girls’ positive outcomes, the data we report provides a more statistically rigorous analysis.

big sister OF THE YEAR

BIG SISTER: HOLLY DURSO LITTLE SISTER: AVIONNA “AVI”

The first time Holly met her Little Sister Avi, she was nervous. “I wanted her to like me, and I really wanted to get along well,” Holly shares. “I was nervous about my ability to be a Big Sister. I had some great training from the organization, but obviously being trained is different than going out and doing it.”

Holly, who is a project manager at an engineering consulting firm, says that she wanted to be a mentor because she has had them throughout her life. “I’ve had many different mentors at certain points,” says Holly. “I work in an industry that is very male dominated, so I gravitated toward strong female figures in companies that I worked for, and I’ve been fortunate that they’ve given so much time and energy and encouragement to me.” Holly wanted to offer that same support to a girl in Boston. Little did she know that her connection with Avi would build not only into a friendship, but into a true sisterhood.

18 annual report 2022 BIG SISTER BOSTON

OF THE YEAR big sister

In April 2018, Holly and Avi met at Avi’s home. During their first visit they went to an arcade together, and both Avi and Holly recall feeling an immediate connection and comfort together. Since then, the two have built a relationship based on trust, care, and traditions. One of those traditions is eating ice cream together! During the two years of the pandemic, this tradition became especially important. The two had their weekly visits virtually and regularly updated each other with pictures of them eating ice cream. Today, Holly and Avi are thrilled to reinstate this tradition in person!

Holly and Avi’s bond as sisters is clear from the many ways they have supported each other over the years. During the first year of their mentoring relationship, Avi’s mom, Darlene, planned a small, outdoor birthday party for Avi with only immediate family, and she invited Holly to attend as well. For Holly, this was an early sign that her bond with Avi was special. And that bond continued to strengthen. Holly attends Avi’s basketball games and is a regular presence at school events like when Avi graduated from elementary school. Avi shows up for Holly too. A very special memory the two share is when Avi was a bridesmaid at Holly’s wedding. As part of the wedding, Avi gave a speech celebrating Holly. “It was really special,” says Holly. For Avi, it was a beautiful moment to celebrate her Big Sister. “It was honestly so nice,” says Avi. “It just meant so much to me, seeing her so happy and being able to be there, and the fact that she picked me to not just be there, but be involved on her big day really meant a lot to me.” Holly and Avi have been there for each other through the highs and lows. When Holly’s mother passed away, the funeral was the same weekend as Avi’s birthday. Darlene had been planning another birthday party for Avi, but the two decided to attend the funeral instead. When reflecting on this moment, Holly remembers Darlene telling her “Of course we wouldn’t miss it, Avi’s your sister.”

Holly, who is an only child, didn’t know what it was like to have a sister. Now she says, “I have a sister for real, and that’s irreplaceable.” Avi’s mother Darlene was eager to find a Big Sister for her daughter. “I’m a single mother,” says Darlene, “so I was looking for someone else who can come into her life and be like a big sister and do things with her. Holly has been a really good friend, even to me.” Little Sister Avi says that her relationship with Holly is different “because my mom has to deal with everything. It’s good to have someone who isn’t related to the family because the family always tells each other everything. So then to have it just be Holly, and to have someone understand where I’m coming from and being open to talk to me about anything, that’s the best part.”

Today, Holly cannot imagine her life without Avi in it. Even though five years ago she was nervous and unsure how to be a good mentor, Holly knows it was the best decision she made. To those who are interested in becoming a Big Sister, Holly says “despite any nerves or worries or doubts, it’s going to be so worth it. Be present, it’s okay to make mistakes, just be there. You’re going to have an amazing time and bring a lot of joy to your life in ways that you may not even imagine.” For Avi, she believes that every girl can benefit from having a Big Sister, including those who are unsure. “I would say I know how it feels to not know if you want to do it,” says Avi. “You’re scared, you don’t know how it’ll turn out, but just give it a try. People are always scared of doing stuff that they don’t know. But then you do it and you’re exposed to new things and get to have someone who’s another outlet. Even outside of the program, they are still your friend. It’s all so worth it.”

BIG SISTER: DANIELLE LITTLE SISTER: GLESMARIE

For the first time ever, Big Sister Boston is thrilled to feature a Junior Big Sister of the Year! This award recognizes the incredible work of teen mentors in our High School Mentoring program. In this unique program, high school girls are Big Sisters to girls in elementary school. Big and Little Sisters meet after school to participate in facilitated group activities and build genuine friendships. Big Sisters take on the responsibility of being a positive mentor, and Little Sisters can depend on the care and support of an older peer.

Congratulations to the first-ever Junior Big Sister of the Year, Danielle! Danielle is a senior at Boston Latin Academy and has been matched with her Little Sister, Glesmarie, since January 2022. What drew Danielle to the program was her own experience as a Little Sister in Workplace Mentoring when she was in 7th grade. Reflecting on her decision to become a Big Sister, Danielle says “I had an amazing Big Sister and I wanted to be that for someone else.”

When thinking about what it’s like to be a mentor to Glesmarie, Danielle says that her “favorite part is being able to be a friend and a role model to someone just as my Big Sister in the program had been for me...having the honor of that role is very fulfilling.” When Danielle first met Glesmarie, she said that it had been a bit challenging because the two met on Zoom. She said they had both felt awkward, but they quickly got past that awkwardness and found lots of things to talk about. During their conversations, Danielle celebrated Glesmarie’s goals and aspirations of opening her own small business and nail salon. She also offered Glesmarie advice about friends, being in middle school, and what to expect entering a new school year.

Danielle says that once they met in person, “it really improved our relationship.” They have met every week during the school day since Glesmarie was in 5th grade. For Little Sister Glesmarie, she says she loves talking to Danielle, “We talk about literally everything. The longer I’ve known her the easier it is to be myself; I never have to fake something. She never judges me.”

It is clear that Danielle has had an incredibly positive impact on her Little Sister. “I used to be really, really shy,” shares Glesmarie. “I didn’t like to speak up in my classes and I was pretty anxious to answer questions and participate. Danielle helped me get over that, and since then I started participating more and my grades went way up. I went from all C’s to A’s and B’s.” Not only does Danielle help Glesmarie in school, but she has also become a trusted friend. “Having a Big Sister is literally having the big sister that I was never able to have. I have two half-brothers and I’ve never had sisters,” says Glesmarie. “Even though Danielle and I only see each other once a week, we’re really close. It feels like I have an actual sister.” This bond is evident to Glesmarie’s mom too. When Glesmarie talks to her mom about her experience in the program, Glesmarie tells her, “Mom, Danielle is so cool. We are still going to be friends when we are older.”

PROGRAMS

COMMUNITY - BASED MENTORING

Our largest one-to-one mentoring program matches girls between the ages of 7-15 with a Big Sister. These Little Sisters meet individually with their Big Sisters at a date and time of their choosing, and engage in low- to no-cost activities that can range from baking to basketball, watching movies to simply talking with each other. Big and Little Sisters commit to at least one year together, meeting weekly for the first three months and then twice per month. Matches in our Community-Based program are matched for an average of nearly four years.

BIG FOR A DAY

Girls who are enrolled with us in Community-Based Mentoring, but not yet matched with a Big Sister can participate in a monthly group activity with a Big for a Day volunteer led by our staff. Girls who are waiting to be matched are engaged with us from the start. We host many exciting programs for participants in Big for a Day including, yoga, self-defense, painting, engineering projects, and tennis.

SITE-BASED MENTORING

Our Site-Based Mentoring programs take place in schools and community centers in Boston and Cambridge. Big and Little Sisters meet once a week during the school day or their after-school program, and commit to at least three academic semesters together, excluding summer break and school holidays. During visits they read books, learn new skills, work on projects of their mutual choosing, or engage in physical activities. Site-Based Mentoring creates a safe space for girls to have fun, learn, and grow alongside their Big Sisters during their busy school day. Our matches last an average of 32 months in our Site-Based program.

HIGH SCHOOL MENTORING

This unique program takes place in Dorchester with teen students from Boston Latin Academy who mentor Little Sisters at the Trotter Innovation School. The teen Big Sisters also participate in our Girls Leadership Program (GLP) facilitated by our staff. The GLP provides girls with leadership training needed to have a positive impact on their schools and communities. Topics include conflict resolution, communication skills, and career exploration.

WORKPLACE MENTORING

Girls have the opportunity to think big about their futures in this program. Workplace Mentoring pairs employees at a company with Little Sisters from a local school. Little Sisters meet with their Big Sisters at the company’s office, providing a meaningful mentoring experience, and valuable career awareness for girls. Today, Workplace Mentoring matches meet virtually and in-person under the supervision of our staff.

OUR BIG FUTURES

Our Big Futures is a workforce development program for current and former Little Sisters, and High School Mentoring Big Sisters, ages 14-24. This program provides individualized coaching on career/college, scholarship, and financial planning; access to resources and workshops; and leadership opportunities, such as the Junior Advisory Board.

NEW GIRLS NETWORK

As part of our continuum of mentoring, New Girls Network is an opportunity for our Big Sisters and staff to be paired with seasoned professional women in a year-long, one-toone mentoring relationship to further their personal and professional growth. This network encourages women to connect with each other across Greater Boston in a supportive, professional space.

We are excited to announce that Salem State University has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the Mia Roberts Community Partner of the Year Award. Mia, former Vice President of Community Partnerships, retired from Big Sister Boston in March 2023. This Community Partner award is named in honor of Mia’s 21 years of service at Big Sister Boston, where she was a champion for Greater Boston’s girls.

Salem State University has been a steadfast partner of Big Sister Boston since 2016. Over the last seven years, the University and its students have worked to support and enhance our outreach efforts across the communities we serve through both class projects and student internships. From recommendations for new strategies for volunteer recruitment, to helping to expand and enhance our social media presence, to collaborating with the City of Boston’s Mayor’s Mural Crew for the installation of a community mural depicting Big and Little Sisters painted on the exterior wall of Merengue Restaurant in Roxbury, Salem State’s students have been instrumental in helping us engage with girls and young women throughout Greater Boston.

BOSTON HARBOR OF THE YEAR

OF THE YEAR corporate partner

We are thrilled to recognize Encore Boston Harbor as our 2022 Corporate Partner of the Year. Since 2019, Encore Boston Harbor has been a dedicated source of support for Greater Boston’s girls. They have not only provided a generous philanthropic investment in our mission, but their employees have committed their time and talents to working directly with girls. It is this personal connection that makes all the difference.

Encore Boston Harbor staff have joined events such as Big Sister Boston’s Summer Picnic, Appreciation Breakfast, and New Girls Network. At the start of the pandemic, Encore Boston Harbor’s employees hosted Big Sister Boston’s first-ever virtual event for Big and Little Sisters! The company has also hosted recruitment events in Everett, provided technical assistance with our online systems, and, as always, volunteered their time to work directly with Little Sisters.

Last year, Big Sister Boston welcomed Encore Boston Harbor President, Jenny Holaday, to join its Board of Directors. Jenny is deeply invested in supporting girls. In addition to joining the Board of Directors, Jenny recently became a Big Sister in our Site-Based Mentoring program at the Eliot K-8 Innovation School in Everett. “Partnering with the Big Sister Boston organization has been incredibly rewarding for me and our Encore Boston Harbor team of fierce female mentors,” says Jenny. There are currently eight women employees from Encore Boston Habor who are Big Sisters to girls at the Eliot. This program is vital for girls who are not able to meet with a Big Sister outside of the school day.
