Dear Friends,

We are proud to share our 2017 Annual Report with you. None of the achievements would have been possible without you. Our Annual President and Board Chair Report highlights the innovative and creative Chief Executive Officer ways in which the Big Sister Boston community came together to support the girls of Greater Boston, our Little Sisters, and the women who encourage and guide these girls, our Big Sisters. We built upon our history and knowledge of mentoring girls and harnessed the expertise of our Board members, partner organizations, and staff to create more access and opportunities for both girls and women.

Deborah Re

Deborah Daccord

Collaboration, leadership, and a focus on the future for our Little Sisters were key to our success. You marched with us on Boston Common, as we raised our voices together for equity. You welcomed Little Sisters from schools in Charlestown and Dorchester into your workspaces, building sisterhood not only among the girls, but among your employees. You provided funding and volunteers to coach our High School Mentoring Academy teen Big Sisters and support them in their post-secondary success. You made it possible for hundreds of Big and Little Sisters to laugh, learn, and grow together through activities that bolster their skills and confidence. When just 7% of philanthropic dollars in the U.S. support organizations that are driving change for women and girls, your generosity speaks volumes. Thank you for being in it with us as we continue on a path of getting #Girls2Great by shifting the landscape one mentoring relationship at a time. With gratitude,

Deborah Re President and CEO

achieving outcomes We measure the results of our mentoring programs with the Youth Outcomes Survey (YOS), a research-based tool developed by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) in conjunction with experts in the field of mentoring. These measurements are applied to our Community-Based Mentoring (CBM) program and our Site-Based Mentoring program (SBM).

This tool processes YOS data using the Reliable Change Index to determine meaningful change in scores. Because the index incorporates a margin of error and can determine between “significant improvement” and “trending toward significant improvement” in girls’ positive outcomes, the data we report will provide a more statistically rigorous analysis. Dear Big Sister Boston Community,

Nearly 20 years ago, I became a part of the Big Sister Boston community as a Little Sister. At nine years-old, I had no idea that I was joining an organization that would foster my growth for decades to come. Despite my initial reservations about what I could learn from—or even have in common with—a white woman named Maya Malinkovitch, my relationship with my Big Sister has ultimately revealed to me one of the greatest lessons of all: the importance of simple human connectedness. I came to find that Maya and I did have a lot in common—a love of dance and hip-hop music and a lack of patience for anything. Through our adventures, and even more so through our conversations, I learned to judge less and listen more, to be curious and thoughtful. As I continue that journey, Maya is still by my side, offering encouragement, support, and a reminder that I am more than enough. Being a Little Sister made me part of something bigger than myself. In 2011, I was honored to share my story with 500 guests at the Big in Boston gala, making connections that evening that would further my career trajectory and help me achieve my goals. The following year, I joined Big Sister Boston’s Diversity Board and remain an active member today. Among the women of the Diversity Board, I have found sisters who, like me, understand the power of positive mentoring relationships between women and girls. Together, we 10 BIG SISTER BOSTON | WWW.BIGSISTER.ORG

strive to encourage more women of color to step up and become Big Sisters, to help more girls access their Black girl magic, their inner queen. As a part of the Big Sister Boston community, I decided to join their New Girls Network in 2017, and add another friend and mentor to my tribe of women. Through the Network, I am paired with Big Sister Boston Board Chair and Mintz Levin attorney, Deb Daccord. Deb and I meet regularly and discuss what we call “grown women issues”: life savings, home ownership, and career opportunities. I admire her authenticity in sharing adversity she’s overcome to achieve her goals. I find there’s nothing more inspiring than a woman who goes out and gets what she wants no matter what her circumstances may be.

I realized that I am woven into the fabric of the Big Sister community, just as Big Sister is woven into the fabric of the Greater Boston community.

Last year, I had another opportunity to share my story; this time with a potential funder of Big Sister Boston’s work. As I looked out the window of Big Sister’s conference room, I was struck by what I saw: the neighborhood I grew up in, the school I attended, the city in which I live and work as an educator myself now. And, I smiled as I shared this with the funder because I realized that I am woven into the fabric of the Big Sister community, just as Big Sister is woven into the fabric of the Greater Boston community. And together, we are all working toward one goal of getting #Girls2Great. With gratitude,

Lianne Hughes

Claudia has given me the superpower to be brave and patient. She gave me the skills to speak up and be a strong

16 BIG SISTER BOSTON | WWW.BIGSISTER.ORG

In early 2009, Big Sister Claudia

Rodriguez found herself in a living room with Little Sister Selena—who was just shy of her ninth birthday—Selena’s grandparents, and the Match Support Specialist from Big Sister Boston. “Selena didn’t say anything, and I started to worry that I wasn’t cool enough or fun enough for her,” said Claudia. Despite her worries, Claudia signed the contract committing to at least one year of a mentoring relationship with Selena; then she passed it over to her new Little Sister to sign. “Selena picked up the piece of paper, folded it up, and flicked it across the room. Then she got up and went to her bedroom,” Claudia recalls. For a minute, Claudia panicked, but then she remembered the training she had gone through with Big Sister Boston before meeting Selena. “I was a new adult in this girl’s life, a virtual stranger. She didn’t know if I was going to stick around or not,” said Claudia. “I knew from the training that there was more behind Selena’s behavior than meets the eye.” And, she was right. Soon after, Selena called to Claudia to come to her bedroom so she could show her new Big Sister some of the artwork she had made. It didn’t take long for Selena to realize that Claudia did plan to stick around, though neither of them realized at the time how much their relationship would continue to strengthen and grow over the course of the next nine years. Claudia soon learned that Selena was happiest going to Claudia’s home to make smoothies or tacos together, draw pictures, or have dance parties in her living room. While Selena did not gravitate toward activities in large groups or in front of a crowd, Claudia would gently nudge her Little Sister out of her comfort zone in safe and supportive ways. Selena recalled going ice skating for the first time with her Big Sister. They both fell…a lot. But Selena

remembers how Claudia showed her that it was ok to fall, and the importance of simply picking yourself back up and starting again. A few years after they were first matched, they decided to participate in a flash mob dance at Big Sister Boston’s annual gala at the Museum of Fine Arts with 500 people! They practiced the dance moves together at Claudia’s home and named the different steps so they would remember the order in which to do them. “It may seem small,” said Claudia, “but these opportunities that Big Sister presents to us give us a goal to work toward. It means a lot to us.” The night of the gala, the music came on, signaling the start of the dance. Claudia and Selena got separated for a brief moment. Then Claudia spotted her Little Sister at the front of the group, beaming and starting to dance. Over the years, Claudia and Selena’s connection to Big Sister Boston has provided other opportunities for Selena to speak in front of people and share the impact of their relationship. “Claudia has given me the superpower to be brave and patient. She gave me the skills to speak up and be a strong woman,” said Selena, who is now 18. Selena takes those lessons with her when she goes to anime conferences. Feeling confident in her costume, she’ll be the first to approach someone who might be standing alone or look nervous to be in the crowd. While Claudia said she is proud of all the ways in which Selena is embracing adulthood, she is quick to add, that Selena will always be her Little Sister as they continue to learn and grow together.

BIG SISTER BOSTON | 2017 ANNUAL REPORT 31

Perhaps this truly was the year of the woman. It’s the year that started with women wearing pink hats and marching down streets across this country chanting, “Hey hey, ho ho, all the hate has got to go.” It’s the year that captured the imagination of girls as they watched a little girl named Moana and a wonder woman named Diana find their own identities while saving their communities from hate and fear. And, it’s the year that women one by one joined in a chorus of voices speaking truth to power to finally expose the taunts, the put- downs, and the assaults from men across every industry. It’s also the year that ended with TIME Magazine naming the Silence Breakers as Person of the Year. Progress means embracing sisterhood; the long-term relationships and our shared strengths. It’s the oxygen that will keep us going. Breaking the silence is a major achievement. But, along with #MeToo also came headlines of women turning against one another when the stakes were high, vying for limited places of power. We hear about workplace bullying among women and the lament, “I’d rather work for a man than a woman.” So many women still seek an unattainable perfection that creates stress and self-doubt. It isn’t hard to connect the dots of self-doubt to the historical messages that women have received about our looks and intelligence; or, to the rampant assaults and insults that have recently surfaced. We come to believe what we hear and experience.

We have our remedies, we lean in, we let go, we have chicken soup for every situation. We read self-help/how-to-get-ahead books. But now, in the wake of so many courageous women breaking their silence, we have an opportunity. We must join together and more fully accept ourselves and each other. Easier said than done. We need to respect the difficult choices women make in their lives and believe that women can be sugar and spice, strong and capable. We must believe that it’s OK to work at home, or have a nanny, to have children, or not. We need to accept and support each other in our imperfectly beautiful sisterhood. I know this is possible because I’ve seen it firsthand. As the CEO of an organization focused on the healthy development of girls and women, I’ve learned that relationships are oxygen. Our aim is to share the many pathways traveled and to support women as they are, and where they are. We reinforce that one size doesn’t fit all and that there are women of all backgrounds, shapes and sizes making choices that are right for them and their families. Across our country, brave women are using their voices to put an end to violence and harassment. Now, we need women to speak up about loving each other and loving themselves. Now that the silence is broken, we can create a healthier sound to replace it. This is our next frontier. In many ways, 2017 was the year of the woman; let’s make 2018 the year for all women.

32 BIG SISTER BOSTON | WWW.BIGSISTER.ORG

What if we created more access and opportunity for women in Greater Boston’s workforce, based on a foundation of sisterhood, lifting each other up, and making room at the top for all women? With these goals in mind, we turned the “old boys club” on its head and launched the New Girls Network in collaboration with our Board and seed funding from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation. The Network, creates a continuum of mentoring for Big

Sister Boston staff and volunteers, pairing young women in our community with a woman mentor from among a group of seasoned professionals. The mentors and mentees of the New Girls Network meet for coaching, guidance, and advice. “As a professional woman, having a strong female mentor is so important to my development. I feel very lucky to have someone who pushes me out of my comfort zone and challenges me to learn and grow,” said mentee and Big Sister Boston Recruitment Coordinator, Emilie Shea.

Big Sister Boston is committed to creating a diverse, inclusive organization that reflects the women and girls we serve. Knowing that diverse teams achieve greater outcomes, we focused our time and resources on pathways to increase our cultural responsiveness as an organization. President and CEO, Deb Re, was asked to speak on the Race to Lead panel in October, to share learnings from our journey. The forum opened with a presentation of the findings from the Race to Lead report. The report pointed to a new narrative around race and leadership in the nonprofit sector: to increase the number of people of color as leaders, the nonprofit

sector needs to begin by addressing the practices and biases of nonprofit organizations themselves. Panelists then discussed their experience at the intersection of race and leadership. Deb’s remarks focused on the need to embrace one’s own vulnerability to create an inclusive organization where everyone has a sense of belonging. Throughout the year, Deb and Big Sister Boston staff attended workshops on dismantling biases and racism, created a caucus for staff who identify as people of color, and began developing a training for our volunteers to foster cultural responsiveness.
