LETTER FROM

leadership

Dear Friends, Nothing could have prepared us for the journey that began last March.

Yet, it was our values that drove us to make the right decisions. As an organization, we are fortunate to have a committed, caring staff, engaged Boards, and all of you who stood by us during this most difficult time.

Together, we made sure that girls didn’t experience feelings of loneliness or isolation. When Little Sisters could not see their friends in school, when they couldn’t participate in after-school activities, when they were alone in the confines of their homes while their parents worked, the one thing they could depend on was the consistency, the care, and the attention of their Big Sister. That didn’t change.

What did we learn through this challenging journey?

• We learned that we are resilient.

• We learned that nothing can get in our way of ensuring girls do not feel less than, unimportant, or neglected.

• We learned that although being connected by screens is not optimal, it can serve as a viable alternative when in-person meetings are not an option.

• We learned that if you have the right team in place, anything is possible.

• We re-learned that relationships are the connections that bind us, that make us feel whole.

You will see throughout the pages of this Annual Report, pictures of Zoom meetings; a Big Sister who rode her bike to see her Little Sister from the window of her apartment building; and you will see Big and Little Sisters meeting for the first time in person, wearing masks that have become our new accessory. You will also read a compelling letter from Professor and Researcher Renee Spencer who validates the work we do and has been a source of knowledge and wisdom. You will also read heartfelt stories about our Big Sisters of the Year.

As we reflect on this past year, we look forward with hope to the year ahead as we celebrate our 70th anniversary of igniting girls’ passion and power to succeed. We are grateful to have a community that stands by our side, supports us through the challenging times, and ensures that all girls have the chance to reach their full potential.

HOW WE MEASURE We measure the results of our mentoring programs with the Youth Outcomes Survey (YOS), a research-based tool developed by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) in conjunction with experts in the field of mentoring. These measurements are applied to our Community-Based Mentoring (CBM) program and our Site-Based Mentoring program (SBM).

We include maintenance of positive outcomes along with improvements in our overall measures, which indicate that Little Sisters are developing resiliency and healthy interpersonal skills. We are heartened that even during the pandemic these metrics remained strong, despite challenges for our participants. We did see some decrease in the Family Connectedness measure for CBM participants when compared to 2019, which mirrors national trends for BBBSA. We believe this is due to a combination of factors including some measurement changes, the fact that Little Sisters can now take surveys in private instead of in front of caregivers, and possibly the strain on family relationships from the pandemic. We will continue to monitor these outcome metrics to see if other effects from the pandemic emerge for participants. This tool processes YOS data using the Reliable Change Index to determine meaningful change in scores. Because the index incorporates a margin of error and can determine between “significant improvement” and “trending toward significant improvement” in girls’ positive outcomes, the data we report will provides a more statistically rigorous analysis.

letter of support RENÉE SPENCER What a year it has been! Who could have predicted how much our lives would change as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic and how quickly? By calling us to do what seems impossible, crises have a way of bringing into bold relief what matters most. As schools closed and we learned to wear masks and practice social distancing, girls’ need for connection was made all the more apparent. For 70 years, Big Sister Boston has been making it their business to ensure girls have what I think of as emotional oxygen – caring relationships with women who support them and nurture their potential – and they did not let a pandemic stop them. It is no surprise that Big Sister Boston rose to meet the challenge and worked tirelessly to keep the connections flowing.

Girls need Big Sisters, now more than ever. The pandemic has taken a significant toll on our young people. Depression and anxiety spiked as youth spent too much time at home and isolated from their peers. Big Sisters, while not able to replace all that has been lost, have been perfectly positioned to buffer some of the stress, as they occupy a special place in girls’ lives. Unburdened by the responsibilities of parenting, not confined to a single dimension of a girl’s life like a teacher or coach, and in many ways a much wiser friend than a peer, Big Sisters enjoy the freedom to meet girls where they are and offer some of what they need to thrive and strive. All girls need these kinds of relationships. In fact, decades of research shows that young people who have supportive adults in their corner are much more likely to weather whatever comes their way. This makes Big Sisters especially important for girls now, when most simply have had less access to an array of supportive adults invested in them.

Even as things open back up, girls will be navigating uncharted territory and facing new challenges. I know things will be easier for girls who have a Big Sister by their side. This year we have been forced to endure the pain of having to be distant from one another as significant injustices such as systemic racism and other forms of oppression have been witnessed and called out in important ways, with some of the loudest demands for change coming from girls. Through it all, because of Big Sister Boston many girls have had a special adult to be there for them, cheering them on, providing comfort, or just hanging out, enjoying a break from it all, and creating pockets of joy. Big Sisters offer what one prolific researcher of child development calls “ordinary magic” – the everyday experiences that create the critical conditions needed for healthy development. All girls need that ordinary magic – someone in their corner, caring about and looking out for them. I have long been grateful that Big Sister Boston has been making sure girls have access to some of that ordinary magic but have been especially so this year. Thank you for being a lifeline and for making sure that our girls stay strong by staying connected.

MENTORING

Although 2020 will not soon be forgotten, it will only be a part of the long and special friendship between Big Sister Maura Hershman and her Little Sister, Kiora. Maura and Kiora have been matched in our Community-Based Mentoring program for almost 6 years. Maura has been a teacher for 22 years, and currently works as a kindergarten teacher in Canton. Although she is a dedicated teacher to her students, Maura decided to become a Big Sister because she “wanted to be able to have a positive impact on a child by being a mentor.”

From the beginning, Maura’s commitment to her Little Sister was clear. New matches in CommunityBased Mentoring meet weekly for the first three months. This time commitment ensures Big and Little Sisters have ample time to get to know each other, explore different activities, and find a routine that works best for them. After the three-month period, matches then meet at least twice a month. When Maura first met Kiora in June 2015, Kiora was a quiet 8-year-old and the eldest of her siblings. It soon became clear to Maura that Kiora would benefit from continuing their weekly visits, rather than twice a month. For Maura, it was important for Kiora to “have time on her own outside of the house doing activities she enjoyed.” The two have met almost every week for nearly six years. “Maura is awesome.

She’s never taken a break,” says Kiora’s grandmother.

One of Maura’s favorite parts of her mentoring relationship with Kiora has been “having a young friend to experience adventures, which is what we call our outings, that widen Kiora’s horizons.” Over the years, the two have gone on lots of adventures together! Bike riding, ice skating, pumpkin and apple picking, knitting classes, sledding, going to the movies, rock-climbing, cranberry picking, and volunteering at charities. Their favorite adventures, however, are when they can do arts & crafts projects together, including glass blowing, painting classes, and calligraphy. Maura has kept every craft she’s ever made with Kiora. “I like the times we have tried to make the world more beautiful by planting bulbs and painting rocks with messages,” says Maura.

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic the two couldn’t go on their weekly adventures. However, Maura and Kiora’s tradition of seeing each other each week never faltered. Over the last year, the pair saw each other virtually via video calls to talk and play games online. When the weather permitted, they went on socially-distanced walks near Kiora’s house to spend time together safely and to stay active. These consistent opportunities to connect were vital during a time of intense isolation, loneliness, and uncertainty. Throughout the ups and downs of an unprecedented year, Maura and Kiora’s friendship has only deepened. When asked what her favorite thing about her Big Sister is, Kiora said that she loves how Maura is outgoing and creative. “I do feel like I am benefiting just as much or more from our relationship,” says Maura, “I’ve developed friendship with the kindest and sweetest young lady. It has been an honor to see her mature from a little girl to a responsible adult.”

The pandemic impacted all of our mentoring programs; yet nowhere was that impact felt more acutely than in our Site-Based Mentoring program. Site-Based Mentoring is designed to give Little Sisters an opportunity to spend time with their Big Sister during their school day or after-school program. As schools closed, some of our matches in Site-Based Mentoring had to end, while others opted to wait until they could meet again in person. For Big Sister Tracy-Jane Pierre and her Little Sister Allya, however, the decision to stay connected virtually during the pandemic was a no-brainer.

Tracy-Jane and Allya were matched in Site-Based Mentoring at the Josiah Quincy Elementary School in Boston in May 2017. Big and Little Sisters in Site-Based Mentoring typically stay matched for one and a half years, yet for Tracy-Jane and Allya, this year marks their four-year anniversary!

MENTORING The pandemic was no match for this match. “Fortunately, our relationship has become even stronger during the quarantine period,” shared Tracy-Jane.

Although today Tracy-Jane could not imagine her life without her Little Sister, she grew up as an only child. “I’d always wanted a sibling–whether they were older or younger–especially a sister,” says Tracy-Jane. In 2017, as an undergraduate student, she was looking for opportunities to volunteer as a mentor to a girl, and soon discovered Big Sister Boston. She was matched with 4th-grader Allya, and the two have been inseparable ever since. They share a deep love of music and singing (their favorite band is Blackpink). Allya loves to draw and has introduced Tracy-Jane to anime. Over the years, they have built a friendship of honesty and open communication. For Allya, finding a person who she could talk to about her interests and with whom she could share her love of music and art was important. “I am a shy person,” says Allya, “so my relationship developed to a point where I feel very comfortable around Tracy especially since we have some of the same hobbies. I just like having someone I can communicate with, trust, and spend time with.”

Over the past year, Tracy-Jane and Allya have stayed committed to spending time together virtually.

“Although many challenges may arise during these times, my Little Sister and I have maintained a very positive relationship throughout our four years together,” says Tracy-Jane. “We do this by being open to different perspectives, making decisions together, and addressing any issues right away.” Allya is always excited to see her Big Sister, often texting Tracy-Jane in the days before their virtual visits.

Over video calls, the two have spent time playing online games, watching movies, talking about Allya’s school, listening to new K-pop music together, and watching anime.

Looking back over their four years of friendship, Tracy-Jane shares that Allya “has grown into an intelligent, responsible, outgoing, and determined young girl. When we first met, she was quiet and reserved. Now, we talk about almost anything for hours! My Little Sister is very dedicated to our time together, which she values very much.” Reflecting on Allya’s time with Tracy-Jane, her caregiver shares that, “my daughter is happier, more expressive, more interactive, she interacts with me more, and she is maturing.”

“Being a Big Sister has taught me the importance of fostering healthy relationships with others, especially with young individuals,’’ says Tracy-Jane. “I gained a sense of confidence knowing that I am positively influencing the lives of others by being a mentor to my Little Sister!” Although we do not know what lies ahead, we hope that someday soon this match will again be able to meet in Allya’s school to celebrate their time together, and begin to plan what comes next.

Due to the pandemic, all one-to-one mentoring activities are now available online, making the virtual space personal with the same care and expertise we’ve provided girls since 1951. And since interactions between Big and Little Sisters are happening at home virtually, we have been able to communicate more with Little Sisters’ caregivers to address their concerns and hopes for their child, which has strengthened our connection to Little Sisters.

COMMUNITY-BASED MENTORING

BIG FOR A DAY

Our largest one-to-one mentoring program matches girls between the ages of 7-15 with a Big Sister. These Little Sisters meet individually with their Big Sisters at a date and time of their choosing, and engage in low- to no-cost activities that can range from baking to basketball, watching movies to simply talking with each other. Big and Little Sisters commit to at least one year together, meeting weekly for the first three months and then twice per month. Matches in our CommunityBased program are matched for an average of four and a half years.

Girls who are enrolled with us in CommunityBased Mentoring, but not yet matched with a Big Sister can participate in a once monthly group activity with a Big for a Day volunteer led by our staff. Girls who are waiting to be matched are engaged with us from the start.

We host many exciting programs for participants in Big for a Day including, Designing Your Study Space, Coding Bracelets, Cards for Seniors, and a Game Night.

SITE-BASED MENTORING Our Site-Based Mentoring programs take place in schools and community centers in Boston, Cambridge, and Quincy. Big and Little Sisters meet once a week during the school day or their after-school program, and commit to at least three academic semesters together, excluding summer break and school holidays.

During visits they read books, learn new skills, work on projects of their mutual choosing, or engage in physical activities. Site-Based Mentoring creates a safe space for girls to have fun, learn, and grow alongside their Big Sisters during their busy school day. Our matches last 21 months in our Site-Based program.

HIGH SCHOOL MENTORING ACADEMY This unique program takes place in Dorchester with teen students from Boston Latin Academy who mentor Little Sisters at the Trotter Innovation School. The teen Big Sisters also participate in our Girls Leadership Program (GLP) facilitated by our staff. The GLP provides girls with leadership training needed to have a positive impact on their schools and communities.

Topics include conflict resolution, communication skills, and career exploration.

WORKPLACE MENTORING Girls have the opportunity to think big about their futures in this program. Workplace Mentoring pairs employees at a company with Little Sisters from a local school. Little Sisters meet with their Big Sisters at the company’s office, providing a meaningful mentoring experience, and valuable career awareness for girls.

OUR BIG FUTURES In March 2020, despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, we successfully launched Our Big Futures, a new program for girls ages 14-24 that provides coaching, support, and resources to help girls achieve post-secondary success. We designed the program to offer a continuum of care for girls. No matter whether a girl is in high school applying to her first summer job, attending university, or finding her dream career, we created Our Big Futures to be an accessible, tailored hub of information, support, encouragement, and professional guidance to offer Little Sisters the tools and resources they need to thrive.

Every girl who joins Big Sister Boston has her own unique goals, preferences, and passions. In our mentoring programs, when matching a girl with a Big Sister, we take these needs seriously to ensure she can build a strong, positive mentoring relationship with her Big Sister. In developing Our Big Futures, we knew this attention to the individuality and needs of each girl would be imperative. In Our Big Futures, girls can benefit from targeted, one-on-one coaching with a trained staff member to discuss post-secondary or career goals, strategies for success, and any challenges they encounter along the way. We have helped girls apply for firsttime jobs, secure paid internships, prepare for interviews, and navigate applications for college scholarships and financial aid.

The program is highly adaptable and intentional to meet the needs of each girl, as she paves her way on her postsecondary journey.

Our Big Futures is an exciting addition to our programs. It ensures we can continue to invest in girls as they move into adulthood. As we celebrate the first year of Our Big Futures, we are proud of our work to foster positive, post-secondary outcomes for more girls in Greater Boston.

of the year In a year when there were many competing news priorities, our Partners of the Year – WBZ-TV and The Boston Globe – never wavered in their commitment to share the story of Big Sister Boston and the girls and women in our community.

WBZ-TV has been providing news and information to the Greater Boston area for just a few years longer than Big Sister Boston has existed. What began with anchor Lisa Hughes joining Big Sister’s Board in 2008 has grown over the years to become a true partnership and mutual investment in the girls and women of Greater Boston.

“It was never a why but how can we support this incredible organization,” WBZ-TV General Manager Mark Lund said. “We have been serving our community for over 70 years, and we look for like-minded organizations to help support their mission and our community.”

Over the years, the ‘how’ of this partnership has included WBZ featuring Big Sister on the “4 Your Community” segment, creating PSAs to highlight our matches and support our recruitment efforts, and enthusiastically supporting our events. Mark’s wife Amy has served as Co-Chair of our Project Role Model Fashion Show, which has featured on-air talent such as Anaridis Rodriguez, Eric Fisher, and Levan Reid as models. Lisa Hughes is the emcee for all of our events, including Project Role Model, Big in Boston and Boss Ladies. One year, Eric even stood in for Lisa as the emcee for our Car Raffle drawing and held off the rain until right after he pulled the winning ticket!

“WBZ-TV is 100% invested in girls and woman. We believe in the power of mentorship, and that positive experiences, healthy relationships and enrichment programs support healthy development in girls,” Lund said. “The impact of Big Sister Boston has been huge, both internally at WBZ-TV and in our community.”

The Boston Globe, which has been our partner since 2014, has a readership of hundreds of thousands for its print issues, and millions online; being able to access this number of people is a critical opportunity for Big Sister Boston. In 2020, thanks to ads in the Globe, our 32nd Annual Car Raffle was the most successful it had been in years – raising an additional $30,000 to support our programs.

Through the years, Globe staff has served as mentors and Board members, in addition to in-kind support provided. This commitment to our mission ensures that the Globe is invested in Big Sister Boston’s success in the community.
