Message From Bialik College Foundation Co-Chairs “School fees and government grants cover the day-to-day running of the school. However, with your generous support of our College Foundation, we are able to dream big and ensure that Bialik continues to provide the very best opportunities, programs and facilities for our children, for their children and for future generations.”
In 2018, we were appointed as CoChairs of the Bialik College Foundation and shortly after we were thrilled to welcome Tanya Cherny to the newly created role of Foundation Director. In the truest spirit of our Bialik family, Tanya has brought with her a wealth of experience, passion and enthusiasm as well as a genuine connection as both a Bialik graduate and current school parent. The Bialik College Foundation was created to help build a culture of giving where we work together, B’Yachad, to support the ongoing development and success of Bialik whilst also ensuring that no Jewish child is denied access to our world-class Jewish education. School fees and government grants cover the day-to-day running of the school but it is with your generous support of our College Foundation that we are able to dream big and ensure that Bialik continues to provide the very best facilities, programs and opportunities for our children, for their children and for future generations. Inclusivity is at the core of all that we do at Bialik, and our approach to fundraising is no different. We recognise and value all donations, large or small, as collectively they have a significant impact. During this year we have formed a highly talented and passionate committee and we would like to thank each of them for their commitment to the school and for helping to

take our Foundation to the next level in community engagement and philanthropy. We would like to introduce our committee members Jodie Auster, Amanda Briskin-Rettig, Romy Bursztyn, Jono Gelfand, Wayne Lasky, Jeffrey Mahemoff, Anna Serry, David Simmelmann and Sally Robin. As most of you are aware, Sally also heads up the Bialik College Parents Association and we are proud of the collaboration and joint activities we have undertaken over recent times. In April we hosted a Night in Jerusalem that saw the incredible virtual guided tour of the old city whilst enjoying a delicious Israeli feast provided by our very own Shuk. And in August who can forget the most amazing online event that saw close to 1,000 of our Bialik community celebrate a very unique Bialik Zoom Kabbalat Shabbat in partnership with the BCPA. These types of events have been the fabric that has bound us during the most extraordinary year that has been 2020. It has certainly been a year of challenge but also of opportunity. Our College community has risen to the challenge and shown a strength and resilience that makes us so incredibly proud and optimistic for our future. We say thank you to each and every one of you that has found a way to make a difference. Thank you to our newest Foundation members, to those that donated back their school fee discount and to everyone who found a way to reach out to others and ensure that each and every one of us has remained connected and supported. Bialik would not be the school it is today without your support. Your generosity has a profound impact on all who attend our school and we thank you. Together, we have truly honoured and lived our Bialik and Jewish values.
We acknowledge there are many ways to support our extraordinary school. Philanthropy comes in many forms and is not only about giving money, but also your time. For many of us, time is a very precious commodity and we would like to acknowledge and thank the many wonderful volunteers who have given their time, energy and passion to our school. This year marked the launch of a new Foundation platform which will be known as the Year 12 Legacy Project. This annual program will provide an opportunity for all Year 12 families to sponsor a program that ensures their legacy; that future students will find an even stronger school than the one this Year 12 cohort discovered when they began their Bialik journey. In recognition of the Class of 2020 and their contribution to the school, the College will be dedicating a tree in their honour along the pathway from the Tooronga Road entrance. We look forward to seeing this tradition grow and for our youngest students to arrive at Bialik through what will become a symbolic guard of honour, with an avenue of trees representative of, not just of the Class of 2020, but of future years of Bialik graduates. We are so grateful to Romy Bursztyn and Jono Gelfand for their vision and leadership in developing this wonderful new initiative. Thank you again to all who supported Bialik this year, we look forward to connecting in 2021. Michael Carp and Stacey Dodge Foundation Co-Chairs

Message From Bialik College Foundation Director My journey at Bialik began in 1988 when I arrived at Shakespeare Grove and into the Year 1 classroom of the renowned Mrs Vanderhook. One year later, I moved to the Sam and Minnie Smorgon campus where Mrs Dunn’s Tuckshop evolved into the Kutner Family Shuk, ‘big lickies’ became known as ‘juice cups’, the Year 12s moved out of portable classrooms and into the Isaac Fraid VCE Centre. Lunchtimes were spent sitting on the steps of the Dodge Family Amphitheatre – and the ELC, Gringlas Sports Centre, Besen Family Art and Technology Building, Hellen family Library and Children’s Centre and the Bialik College Creche were a mere twinkle in Jeffrey Mahemoff’s eyes. What has been achieved in the last 30 years at Bialik is a truly great success story, made possible by generations of Bialik supporters. We are grateful to each and every person who gave their time and or resources to help make Bialik what it is today. The last 12 months tell a different kind of success story for the Bialik College Foundation but one of which we can be equally proud. Working in collaboration with the College Council and Parents Association, we faced the challenges of 2020 as one Bialik community. Together we experienced a virtual tour of the streets of Jerusalem and welcomed Shabbat on Zoom. Together we vowed that no child should be forced to leave Bialik due to financial hardship caused by COVID-19. Together we made this a reality. Knowing that asking for help can be difficult, we were proud of the College’s decision to offer fee reductions across the board to all Bialik families in two consecutive terms. We were truly inspired by the generosity of families who waived their discount and then chose to make a donation to our Foundation.
Together parents, grandparents, old friends, new friends, Old Collegians and Foundation Members rallied in their support for Bialik and our community. We thank you for your leadership and commitment to our College in this most challenging year. Our children are the beneficiaries of a legacy of giving created by generations before them. The Bialik I entered in Year 1 was so different to the Bialik I graduated from in 2000. Now with my husband Dean and my children at the beginning of their Bialik journey, what will become of the school during their time as students of the College and our time as parents? Bialik has achieved a top 5 VCE ranking for the last 10 years and under the visionary leadership of Principal Jeremy Stowe-Lindner and Bialik’s Senior Leadership Team, top 3 for the last 5 years and top of the state in a year like no other. This consistency demonstrates a commitment to excellence that we must strive to maintain. Of course results are only one part of Bialik’s success, and 2020 in particular, has shown us what it means to be a part of our Bialik Family.
Welcome Julia Teperson, Foundation Officer We are thrilled to welcome Julia Teperson to the Foundation team in 2021. Julia commenced in the role of Foundation Officer at the beginning of the year and will be supporting the Foundation in all aspects of operations. Julia moved to Melbourne from Sydney with her husband Mark and two young daughters in 2018. Having attended Masada College in Sydney, Jewish education has always been a priority for the Teperson and Heymann families and Mark and Julia look forward to continuing this tradition at Bialik.
Julia describes Bialik as her ‘home away from home’ and has made herself indispensable since arriving as a parent of the school three years ago. Julia plays an active role in the school as ELC Coordinator of the Bialik College Parents Association and is a regular volunteer at the Shuk. After completing a Masters of Architecture and working in a commercial architectural practice, Julia moved into administration and recruitment. Julia’s diverse professional experience has given her the skills required to grow and improve our Foundation operations. We look forward to introducing you to Julia over the coming months.
2021 provides the opportunity for our community to invest in Bialik’s culture of excellence. We invite you to help us write the next chapter in Bialik’s history as we work together to create a science and innovation hub that will inspire our students to become the change-makers of tomorrow. We look forward to sharing this vision with you in the coming months. We approach 2021 with cautious optimism knowing that COVID is not yet behind us and that the cost of Jewish education remains a community challenge. However, if we meet every year with the strength and determination of 2020, together we can ensure the future remains bright for generations of Bialik students. I look forward to connecting and reconnecting with you over the course of 2021. Tanya Cherny Foundation Director

Jewish Education and Legacy Both our College and Foundation remain committed to ensuring that Jewish Education should be a right and not a privilege. Bialik has been helping families to access a Jewish education for more than 75 years and we are proud that as a community we have supported hundreds of students to graduate from Bialik since our first graduating class in 1990.
Along with Bialik’s Scholarships and Bursaries program, our Fee Assistance program builds diversity in the Bialik community. Some of our highest achieving students graduate from Bialik unaware that their journey through Bialik has been enabled by the support of our Fee Assistance Program. All of this would not be possible without the generosity of our Foundation Members and donors.
The Pratt Foundation Scholarship We are delighted to announce the launch of The Pratt Foundation Scholarship in 2021. This transformative gift will touch the lives of more than 35 students and their families by subsidising tuition fees for students in their final years of schooling at Bialik College. The Pratt Foundation is a Bialik College Foundation Visionary member, a long standing supporter of our Fee Assistance program and, in more recent years, of the Israel Chavayah program. Principal Jeremy Stowe-Lindner attributes Melbourne’s vibrant and thriving Jewish Community to the strength of Melbourne’s Jewish Schools. “Gifting Bialik is gifting the future of our community and we thank the Pratt Foundation for their leadership and commitment to Jewish Education at Bialik.” says Principal Jeremy.

Bialik Foundation
Next year the Bialik College Foundation will embark on a community-wide campaign to help families continue to access a world-class Bialik education. “Affordability and continuity of Jewish education will always remain paramount,” explains Bialik College Foundation Co-Chairs Michael Carp and Stacey Dodge. “Bialik offers a uniquely inclusive and world-class education, graduating hundreds of Jewish children who see the diversity of our community as healthy and necessary. We must work together as a community and invest in education now for the benefit of future generations. Thank you to the Pratt Foundation for their visionary contribution to Bialik and our community.”
Generations of Bialik students have benefitted from the generosity of those who have bequeathed gifts to the College. These bequests, no matter their size, have a profound impact on the lives of Jewish children and contribute to the continuity of a thriving and vibrant Jewish Community in Melbourne. Grow With Us With the world facing a pandemic, 2020 inspired us to think creatively and reimagine the use of our outdoor spaces for learning, cross-class activities and community events. Our Amphitheatre was transformed to a multi-use events space, camps were staged onsite as multi-day incursions, new lights illuminated our Tennis Courts and the outdoor basketball courts were resurfaced. Thanks to the generous support of our Bialik College Parents’ Association, our Primary Students engaged in immersive outdoor learning with the establishment of a dedicated ecological microenvironment, Bialik in the Bush, and new Footy Goals were erected in the Krongold Oval and Primary Zone.

The Tooronga Project
A Sustainable Future
The Dodge Family Amphitheatre has always been a hive of activity within the beautiful grounds of our campus—and now with the addition of two large format LED screens and a surround sound system, it is Bialik’s newest event space and biggest outdoor classroom!
Lush and abundant gardens are a signature of the Bialik College campus and are notably absent at the Tooronga Road entrance. Our goal is to create a greener landscape that will inspire our students to explore and engage with their environment from the moment they arrive at Bialik.
The College is proud to have installed a 350 kW solar system across two of our largest buildings, the Gringlas Sports Centre and Evelyn Hellen Library. The project is regarded as one of the largest school solar projects in Australia.
The Dodge Family has been a supporter of Bialik for three generations, beginning with the late Fred and Gertie Dodge ז״ל. Ron and Judy, and now their children continue their legacy and we thank the Dodge family for their philanthropic vision and continued investment in our College. It is very special when families re-invest in the maintenance, improvement or redevelopment of a project they have supported in the past, enabling Bialik to remain a truly world-class school for future generations.
With significant support from the Victorian Government, The Tooronga Project will see the the creation of vertical gardens, rain gardens, a perennial planted zone and park furniture around which our community can connect with each other and the environment. As part of the Foundation’s Year 12 Legacy Project, an avenue of trees will be planted along the entry path. In time, each tree will be dedicated to the graduating classes of Bialik, in recognition of their contribution to our College.
Our whole school community has been making the most of this wonderful addition to the Amphitheatre. The enhancement of this space enabled us to reopen our campus to families, providing a COVID-safe space for school reunions, community events and performances.
The Tooronga Project will see a complete redesign of our Kindergarten playground. As a Reggio Emilia-inspired school, we recognise the environment as the third teacher and consider collaboration and community as essential to the Bialik ELC experience. With these as our guiding principles, the new playground has been designed to bring our children together by encouraging cross-class play in an interactive environment that includes water pumps, creek beds, sand pits, performance spaces and new play equipment.
More than 800 panels were mounted on the rooftops of the two buildings, producing more than 450 MWh of clean energy annually and helping to reduce the carbon footprint of the College by over 400 tonnes every year. This equates to roughly 150 cars off the road or the planting of 80 new trees each year. In addition to the positive impact on our environment, the College will benefit from savings of more than $60k per annum in electricity costs. This project presents an exciting educational opportunity for our students to learn first-hand about sustainability and clean energy.
Naming opportunities are available. Please contact us for more information.

2020 marks the very sad 10 year anniversary of the passing of Reagan Milstein – a much loved student at Bialik. The family wanted to mark the occasion in some meaningful way and decided to sponsor the naming of a sports oval in Reagan’s memory. “The Reagan Milstein Football Field” dedication ceremony will be held on the 16th of April.
