The park’s 2020 vision brought transformative improvements, enhancing its physical structures, functionality, views, and connectivity. Andrew Young International Boulevard, which once divided the park, was reimagined as a pedestrian corridor extending across the park—from the newly installed iconic Olympic Rings to the College Football Hall of Fame. The upgrades focused on five key areas to elevate the park’s ability to host events, corporate receptions, picnics, major concerts, and festivals:

• Paralympic Plaza – Redesigned circulation and open space.

• Unity Plaza – Granite water walls flanking a reflection pool, home to the Androgyne Planet sculpture.

• Southern Company Amphitheater – Enhanced with new upgrades and shade structures.

• Legacy Gardens Promenade – Introduced as a new pedestrian gateway.

• Fountain of Rings Plaza – Featuring a new Olympic Rings monument.

In the new playground at the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf, students experience the convergence of accessibility and empowerment. Through its thoughtfully crafted landscape and vibrant hues, this space becomes a catalyst for both imaginative exploration and social connection. The re-energizing space provides a seamless pursuit of play with knowledge and learning to affirm the power of accessible environments. It is within this re-energizing space that the pursuit of play seamlessly intertwines with knowledge and learning to affirm the power of accessible environments.

The vision of the design team is to reimagine the playground into a play space that adds immense value to the campus. Taking the old, inaccessible playground and transforming it into an inclusive and universally design space. ADA standards are considered throughout the space. With the school mascot being a panther, the design team structured the functional layout of the playground to a panther’s paw print. Incorporating play equipment in the toes, while maintaining a strong visual to the rear of the playground as support for staff. Ascending mounds guide students to the hillside play and slides, while defining the 2-5 year and 5-12 year zones. Terraced seat walls were incorporated to strategically address the grade change and provide a space for outdoor classrooms.

• Inclusive playground and equipment

• Added security and staff support features

• Improved circulation and accessibility

• New basketball half-court

• Outdoor classroom spaces

• Iconic accessible tower

EARLY COUNTY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Blakely, GA

Approximately 0.83-acres of space with covered walks connecting the various school wings. The space contains existing specimen trees and is adjacent to the school bus parking lot. The concept design was provided as part of a Request for Proposal.

The goal of the inclusive playground design was to connect the students and staff with items they interact with daily, but at a larger scale. Students interact and bond as they traverse various grade changes. Enlarged paperclips and notebook binders replace traditional bike racks. Oversized alphabet blocks and pencils provide opportunities to climb. Multiple outdoor classroom spaces are provided, and giant books can be used for additional seating. Students can practice their math by jumping on the supersized calculator. If feeling risky, students can pass-thru the open-faced scissors. This inclusive play space is one for the imagination!

• Play zones for 2-5 year olds and 5-12 year olds

• Inclusive playground and equipment

• Themed seating elements

• Themed climbing features

• Themed bike racks

CITY OF ALPHARETTA PARKS & RECREATION*

Alpharetta, GA

This 11-acre park features an existing outdoor recreation facility and serves as the terminus of the 9.3-mile Big Creek Greenway in Fulton County. Little Pine Trail runs through the park, connecting it to Union Hill Road, while McGinnis Ferry Road to the north marks the boundary between Forsyth and Fulton counties. At the park’s center, a pop-up skatepark serves as a hub for youth skateboarders, bikers, and rollerbladers, who park their vehicles and use the park as a launch point for their activities. The northern half of the park lies within a designated flood zone and is home to the Big Creek tributary.

Ongoing Landscape Architecture

The vision aimed to enhance the existing recreation facility by incorporating seating areas and an adventure play space for children ages 2–12. The play space’s functional design leverages hillside play as its primary structure. To improve safety, grade changes were integrated to separate the greenway trail and bikers from the play area, preventing conflicts between users. The existing pop-up skatepark is planned for relocation closer to Union Hill Road, increasing visibility to support security efforts. Designed to accommodate various skill levels, the skatepark promotes generational use, fostering selfpolicing and reducing vandalism. Additionally, the parking lot was reimagined to optimize vehicular circulation while meeting parking capacity requirements.

• Public park redesign and repurposing project

• Adventure play space

• New skatepark

• Seating areas

• Reimagined parking lot

• Stormwater management
