Setting the standards of pre-fabricated
In this issue of Building & Construction Review, we are delighted to showcase Stormking for its Commitment To Excellence to the construction industry
Stormking was established in 1985, and over the years has evolved into the UK’s leading manufacturer of Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) components for the building and construction sectors. From starting out with just 10 employees, Stormking now thrives operating across six sites (550,000 sq.ft of manufacturing), employing over 350 people.
Over the years, the company has hit some incredible milestones, and is the only accredited supplier of GRP products to the construction industry. Its capacity of production and accreditations come unrivalled in the industry and are unmatched by any other manufacturer.
With over 40 years of experience, Stormking has built a reputation for expertise and reliability in the industry. Since its inception, the company has continually achieved milestones that underscore its commitment to quality and innovation.
In 2006, Stormking earned BBA accreditation for its Dormer Roofs and Bay Window Roof products, setting a
high standard for its offerings. This was followed by ISO 9001 accreditation for its Quality Management System in 2009 and ISO 14001 certification for its Environment Management System in 2010. In 2011, the company further expanded its capabilities by obtaining BBA accreditation for its SmartStack replica brick and stone GRP chimney products.
A significant milestone occurred in 2016 when Stormking became part of the Epwin Group PLC, allowing it to broaden its range of low-maintenance building products. In 2019, the company demonstrated its dedication to growth and skill development by opening a state-of-theart Training Academy and Innovation Centre to train the next generation of GRP professionals.
Most recently, in 2022, Stormking refreshed its branding and adopted the slogan ‘GRP Built Off-Site. Save Time On-Site,’ emphasising its focus on efficiency and solidifying its market leadership. These accomplishments reflect Stormking’s enduring commitment to innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction.
Offering a wide range of BBA-certified GRP products as well as free site delivery and on-site support, Stormking has an extensive portfolio that showcases its capacity to meet diverse project specifications. These products are designed to meet the needs of the house building and construction industries and include bay window
roofs, dormers, entrance door canopies, chimneys, and custom GRP fabrications.
“Our commitment to quality and innovation truly sets us apart. We have a dedicated in-house design and technical team that ensures our products not only meet, but exceed industry standards. Additionally, being part of the Epwin Group PLC, we have the backing of one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of extruded building products. We are also proud to be the only accredited supplier of GRP products to the construction industry.”
“We have recently expanded our production facilities and introduced new product lines to better serve our customers, and we will continue to invest in our infrastructure to maintain our position as market leaders,” stated Nick Worrell, Marketing Manager.
What’s more, Stormking is deeply committed to sustainability and continues to lead the way in environmentally responsible practices by enabling its clients to harness the benefits of GRP products in the most eco-friendly way, elevating your projects with a material that combines exceptional durability and a low environmental impact. In 2024, it became the first GRP manufacturing company in the construction industry to achieve two Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) certifications for its insulated and non-insulated GRP products — setting a new benchmark for sustainable innovation.
The company has achieved remarkable progress in sustainability, making significant strides across key areas. Through efficient operations and innovative strategies, Stormking has reduced its CO2 emissions by 12% since 2018. Waste management has also seen substantial improvements, with a 28.4% reduction in general waste
pre-fabricated building components
achieved by optimising processes and prioritising recyclable materials. Additionally, new initiatives such as route optimisation have enhanced energy efficiency, further minimised the company’s carbon footprint and reinforced its commitment to environmental responsibility.
When it comes to housebuilding in the UK, Stormking act not just as a supplier, but a partner. Meeting deadlines whilst staying within a budget can be a difficult task, add in tackling practical challenges like tight schedules, evolving client expectations and environmental exposure, it can be really draining.
This is why Stormking brings invaluable insight and expertise that can help contractors, specifiers, architects and developers, face and overcome different challenges, keeping your priorities in mind. Customers can rest assured in knowing that Stormking’s prefabricated GRP building components are engineered to address these demands, delivering practical efficiency and design versatility.
installation faster than using traditional methods, reducing both labour and equipment costs. The Chimney arrived and was craned into position off the back of the lorry immediately.”
GRP’s ability to balance cost efficiency, durability and market appeal makes it a particularly attractive building material when looking to ensure the success and profitability of any development. Another review left from a Developer stated:
More often than not, contractors on-site operate in fastpaced environments when time is critical. This is when building components like Stormking’s BBA-certified GRP Chimney Stacks, GRP Bay Window Roofs and GRP Dormers thrive, as they are designed to reduce the complexity of installations. Two main factors of using these products will lead to fewer delays which overall aids in a cost reduction. Ease of Use: all GRP building products are lightweight, making them easier to transport, lift and install on-site, and Uniformity: Prefabrication ensures each piece is uniform, eliminating the need for adjustments on-site, because we all know time equals money in the construction industry!
One satisfied contractor left feedback on a recent project when Stormking’s products and services were used, stating: “Using Stormking GRP chimney stacks, we completed
“Homes in our most recent development featured Stormking GRP Dormers, which contributed to faster sales thanks to their premium appearance and lowmaintenance features.”
Receiving such incredible feedback truly solidifies Stormking’s leading position in the construction industry. In light of this, we asked Nick what does a Commitment To Excellence mean to the company and how do they feel they achieve this.
“Commitment To Excellence means consistently delivering high-quality products and exceptional customer service. We achieve this through rigorous quality control, continuous staff training, and by listening to our customers' needs and feedback.”
2025 is set to be another exciting year for the company, as it gears up for further expansion and innovation. Nick expanded, “Going into 2025 our plans include further expansion of our product range, continued investment in technology, and maintaining our commitment to sustainability. We aim to stay at the forefront of the industry by constantly innovating and improving our products and services.”

C40 Curaflex Doyma Gaskets
One of the UK leading installers of pre-insulated district heating systems, Vital Energi Utilities Ltd, use Doyma Curaflex C40 Gaskets to provide a water and air tight seal for all below ground building entries. The specialist installations can be subject to slight movement through expansion and contraction as the system heats and cools.
The Curaflex C40 Gasket is designed to accept the axial movement that may occur during the operation allowing Vital Energi to seal both the opening of the building
façade as well as the HDPE outercasing.
Vital Energi’s Managing Director, Ashley Walsh, noted, “This provides our installation with an excellent termination. It provides confidence both to ourselves and our clientele that we'll leave the fully installed works sealed from any moisture ingress while providing a product that has the flexibility and capability to work alongside our very complex pre-insulated products.”

Direct Hoist rapidly heading to net zero
Environmental awareness isn’t something you’d normally associate with the construction sector. Indeed, it’s reckoned that a third of the UK’s entire carbon emissions come from the built environment.
So, the industry must create and maintain a sustainable outline for the future. Direct Hoist is an ever-expanding construction hoist hire and sales specialist that is leading the field in environmental awareness.
Company founder Rob Wilson says, “Direct Hoist has spent the past three years minimising our carbon footprint, crafting a robust strategy for our Net Zero future, and pushing forward with our written policy for our Construction Line (Silver) accreditation.”
Rob’s approach started with the basics: long-life, lowenergy LED lighting was fitted to the firm’s premises to replace inefficient equipment; recycling is rigorously monitored and separated to minimise general waste; scrap materials are weighed in. Then came switching electricity supplier to a 100% renewable electricity produced by wind and solar farms for the firm’s
workshops and offices, and sustainable practices throughout the entire business and favours suppliers that are either local (to cut transportation) or offer green credentials.
Direct Hoist has added a fully electric Corsa to its fleet of dieselpowered vans that run on 100% renewable HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) fuel, so now even a local supply run is fully renewable powered.
Direct Hoist is also investing in lithiumion battery-powered lifts. These lifts can carry 120kg up to heights of 10m and are controlled
wirelessly by a smart-phone app. They’re ideal for transportation and installation of solar panels.
Most importantly, the inclusion of a hoist on any construction site has an added environmental benefit due to its manpower-saving efficiency. Construction hoists dramatically reduce project timescales – the speed and ability of a lifting platform to take tools and materials up multiple storeys can knock weeks off a large scheme – thereby minimising workers’ journeys to and from site.
Rob says, “Direct Hoist is committed to going green, and we’re rapidly heading to net zero.”

Hebridean housebuilder specifying SterlingOSB
Zero on sustainability grounds
Situated seven degrees west of the Greenwich Meridian, and exposed to some of the harshest weather conditions anywhere in the British Isles, the Hebrides present a challenging location for building projects, prompting a recently-established building company to adopt offsite construction technologies which make full use of the technical and environmental benefits of West Fraser’s SterlingOSB Zero.
70-22’ Systems was established in 2022 by three business partners whose experience encapsulates architecture, education and manufacturing amongst other skills, and who decided to develop their own highly-insulated, modular timber building system. Growing organically by providing bespoke packages to clients of parent business, Fraser Architecture, 70-22’ has already delivered properties on the Outer Hebrides; and has more than half a dozen schemes of different sizes in the pipeline for the coming year.
The trademarked system has been designed specifically to avoid the need for craneage, due to the inaccessibility of many sites, while the cellular component modules take the form of wall blocks, lintels and beams to span larger openings. The SterlingOSB Zero is CNC machined and assembled in the workshop before being filled with Warmcel recycled paper insulation.
board because of its formaldehyde free formulation and the fact the material is manufactured in the North of Scotland, using mainly locally sourced softwood from well managed forests.
70-22’ Systems’ co-founder and Commercial Director, Alex Durie, commented, “We use West Fraser’s SterlingOSB Zero to construct our ecological building components, that are prefabricated in our workshop utilising CNC technology to achieve 0.1mm tolerances for each beam and block. It is the ideal material to use as the shell for our components, which are then filled with recycled insulation to achieve a building system that can achieve market leading thermal performance, with a U-value of 0.1 W/m²k, and excellent air-tightness, while maintaining a breathable floor, wall and roof construction. The added bonus of being formaldehyde-free, OSB enables us to build ecologically, utilising timber grown and processed in Scotland as we aim to limit the travel miles in each of our builds. The OSB produced by West Fraser has performed very well in our structural testing, with our system proving to be 1.6 times stronger than a traditional timber frame –and as our system arrives on-site as a component that is pre-fabricated, pre-insulated and designed for manual handling, it is much quicker to assemble.”
the thermal requirements of Section 6 to the Building Standards, Scotland, but can also be delivered as a Passivhaus compliant solution where the client or planning consent demand it. In the medium to long term, the business is building a pattern book of standard house types and has plans to establish a pilot plant on the mainland. The company will also be showcasing its system at the Self-Build and Renovation exhibition in Aviemore this autumn.
SterlingOSB Zero is available in a range of sizes and thicknesses up to 22mm as well as a T&G version ideal for flooring and decking applications. The high performance panel product, free of added formaldehyde, has also earned BBA approval and meets the requirements of NHBC Technical.
As is always the case, West Fraser’s experienced technical team is available to aid with product specification, while downloadable data sheets are available at: https://uk.westfraser.com

Stepping up to safety: Avoiding mixing and matching access tower components
With recent statistics from Health and Safety Executive indicating that construction worker fatalities are 70% up on pre-pandemic levels, it is essential that more is done to ensure that access equipment, including access towers, are used in the correct way.
In the UK, falls from height accounted for 50 deaths across all industries in 2023/24, up from 41 in 2022/23.
Noting this, Dave Elson, UK Compliance Manager at BoSS®, the country’s leading provider of access towers, explains why access tower use needs to be better understood; focusing on the education needed around the dangers of mixing brand components from different tower manufacturers.
Unlike most online shops, you will receive a personal service including free artwork proofs before going to print.
No job is too big or small and we even have a ‘screen printing department’ for any large quantity of signage requirement.
We think that if you just gave Construction & Safety Signs a chance, you would not be disappointed with our service and value for money.

“Architecture is basically a container of something. I hope they enjoy not so much the teacup, but the tea.” Architect Yoshio Taniguchi
For over 20 years, Gromtec Europe Ltd has been involved in the manufacture and supply of mini floor boxes for a wide range of projects from airports to zoos, as well as a growing number of domestic projects. The modern built environment demands safe and plentiful access to power points. While wall sockets are typically the preferred location for power sockets, floor boxes provide power and data points for larger open plan areas, such as offices and concourse spaces.
Gromtec specialises in the supply of mini floor boxes where the surface finish is as important as the boxes function. Like a chameleon, the floor box must often blend into the overall floor finish. Inserts such as wood, tile, or marble are
commonly fitted into the floor box lid. We have over the years seen an increase in the specification of mini floor boxes in large domestic projects. Clients are seeking discreet access to power in the centre of their living spaces for a wide range of applications.
These thoughtful inputs greatly enhances and elevates our living and working environments and makes them safer by eliminating unsightly and dangerous trailing cables.
If you require more information about our ‘mini’ floor box range or our IP66 Simonbox product, please see our website: www.gromtec.com or call our office: 02032 867949, we will be happy to help. Enjoy the tea!
Many workers across the UK will be used to using access towers in order to carry out the daily tasks expected of their day jobs. However, it is a little-known fact that mixing and matching different branded components when it comes to erecting towers can pose a great risk to the user. In fact, using components from different brands can lead to a non-compliant tower structure; even if the components do the same, or similar job.
There is no doubt that the latest HSE statistics make for sobering reading.
Therefore, efforts need to ramp up in order to drive down workplace injuries and fatalities. Encouraging better awareness and practices around access tower assembly is certainly a good place to start.

Avrame UK: Build your dream house where imagination becomes reality!
The path to creating inclusive spaces for individuals with disabilities is a journey as significant as the destination itself.
Northumbria Calvert Trust, a charity known for providing outdoor adventure experiences to people with disabilities, successfully completed a project recently to construct new lodges using AVRAME kit sets.
After being let down by two UK manufacturers, Kevin, the CEO of Calvert Kielder, found Avrame, a company specialising in eco-friendly home kits, during an online search.
Avrame UK’s manufacturing offices are based in Estonia and the USA, with a global reputation for excellence.
From the initial inquiry to design, production, delivery and construction, the process was seamless. Kevin’s visit to Avrame’s manufacturing office in Estonia solidified his confidence in their decision.
Avrame’s transparency and honesty, with no hidden costs, made them a trustworthy partner.
The lodges, named The Sara J and The Reece, are more than just buildings;
they symbolise inclusion, excellence, and adventure. They represent a shared dream where everyone, regardless of ability, can experience the beauty of Northumberland’s wilderness and the thrill of outdoor adventures.
This project is a testament to the power of collaboration and the impact it can have on creating inclusive spaces for all.

Base Structures create stunning new fabric façades for Printworks in Manchester
Base Structures is proud to announce our collaboration with Printworks and John Turner Construction on the groundbreaking redevelopment of Manchester’s iconic entertainment venue. This project features three distinct fabric schemes adorning both the internal & external elevations of the site.
The internal façade artwork, created by Manchester-based artist Alex Sylt, serves as a central public art piece within the venue. Utilising our large format fabric façade system and fabric printing expertise, we brought Sylt’s vision to life, adding a dynamic element to the venue's interior.
Printworks boasts an impressive history, and was once the business premises of several news outlets. The site housed a printing press until the late 1980s, and through much of the 20th Century, was the largest newspaper printing house in Europe and overtime has become a popular venue for shops, bars, restaurants and events. Following this extensive renovation, it now features updated artistic façades and a new impressive digital ceiling, the largest in Europe.
Working at this prominent city centre complex site posed challenges inside and out with restrictive pedestrian management which had to be managed with careful planning and limited access via the narrow surrounding streets. To overcome this, Base Structures engineered a steel frame on Dantzic Street, to install five large printed screens by hand. Also given the congested nature of the site and the intricacy of our works, careful co-ordination was essential, particularly while working alongside the digital ceiling installation.
The client required the internal artwork to be framed by a flashing surround with hidden fixings. We achieved this with innovative brackets and connections, incorporating fifteen speaker panels into a flush façade. These panels were
designed to be removable and held with magnets, concealing all fixings. We were very happy to be able to develop an efficient system of work that resulted in a quality build, ready in time for the renovated Printworks grand opening.
Andy Traynor, Director at Base Structures and Head of Installations and Health & Safety, remarked, “We were delighted to be part of this artistic and iconic redevelopment of a prestigious city centre location. Embracing creativity, we have enjoyed being able to bring large format art to the public. This renovation project has created a truly unique immersive experience and destination attraction to boost the public engagement with the space.
Nationwide Louvre Company offers a full supply and installation service to its customers throughout the UK and have completed a number of projects in the Channel Isles and Europe. The business installs bespoke made to measure quality products on residential, commercial and construction projects.
Nationwide Louvre Company specialise in Brise Soleil and louvred plant screening. Brise Soleil projects are supported with computer simulation software to assess the effectiveness of our products in reducing the effects of solar gain on buildings.
Brise Soleil not only enhances the appearance of a building but will provide a much better living or working environment
for the building’s occupants, with the added benefit of reducing glare to help with computer work and will reduce the running costs of mechanical ventilation and air conditioning.
Our Screening Louvre Systems are used to hide roof mounted plant and equipment and are available in a range of blade shapes and sizes. Supplied in an enormous range of colours and finishes will screen unsightly equipment and enrich the building façade.
