Industrial Spotlight

Spotlight on Spanner Re²

Spanner Re² GMBH is specialises in creating innovative regenerative power generation technologies. The company was originally created as the daughter company to the Spanner Group, one of the world's leading metal working companies, based in Bayerbach, Germany. The headquarters for Spanner Re² are located in Neufahrn/ Landshut, where they currently employ fifty-six employees. Using local wood resources, Spanner Re² uses its cutting-edge wood cogeneration plant to produce combined heat and electricity power at the same time. For users, this gives them considerable financial advantages as they now have a more efficient option for power provision than traditional means allow, meaning more flexibility in their operations. The cogeneration system works by a process called wood gasification, which efficiently converts wood chips into biomass electricity and heat. Using this system, the plant can generate an impressive 30-45kg/h. It can be used in everything from hotels and restaurants to less commercial sectors such as forestry and heat grids. The wood cogeneration plant, a marvel of innovation, has recently been commissioned for the first time

outside of Germany and can now be found in Italy, Austria and Slovakia. Some more of their products include pellet and wood chip heating systems, tiled stove insets and wood furnaces, which are all made at their modern production halls. Thanks to their highly inventive power solutions, Spanner Re² has built up a reputation over the past twelve years as one of the most reliable companies in the industry. Some of their clients include Buderus, Brunner, KWB and Wolf, among other leading heating system manufacturers. Furthermore, they have also been praised for their ethical and socially conscious approach to business. Striving to contribute as much as possible to the environment, Spanner Re² develops environmentally friendly plants, uses only renewable resources and engages in sustainable projects such as LifeCO2, a project which aids reforestation in Uganda and has already resulted in 50 ha of new forest growth. Vacuum Pumps, Systems & Solutions

Clean and hygienic food processing and packaging gains importance as industry is targeting the increase of shelf-life of food products. In view of the globalisation of food supply chains, this represents an important factor in profitability as well as modern lifestyle. Vacuum technology is involved in the relevant processes from the very beginning of the production cycle for foods. Once food material arrives at the processing facility, vacuum conveying systems by Leybold can be used to transport and move food products and ingredients to where they are needed, or indeed to disposal points. Needless to say, these systems must be energy efficient and easy to maintain. Vacuum conveying systems help sort food and facilitate the removal of specified risk materials (SRM), skins and other abattoir by-products, which maintains the hygienic standards of the product. A space-saving system solution that frees up space in the production area and improves hygiene conditions goes far in enhancing plant safety and labour health protection. An initial capital investment into such a system can be recuperated quickly as production levels increase thanks to a fully-automated and self-cleaning system. Cost-effectiveness is further improved by the fact that reductions in human labour can be realised. Central vacuum systems with a centralised pumping room provide a significant energy consumption reduction. By having pumps connected together on a vacuum network, the customer can reduce the installed power by as much as 20-30%. This is explained by the fact that on such a system, pumps can work in hidden time and build in vacuum in the buffer reservoir for the next cycle, whereas in the case of pumps individually installed on machines, there is only a limited time where it has some effective use. Precision Technology Supplies It’s been almost 2 years since Precision Technology Supplies moved to their new building. Back then, we thought the new premises would suit us for a long time. It’s a sign of how busy the past 18 months have been for PTS– and how much its stock holding has increased and broadened – that it has virtually filled the new warehouse already. “When we moved to our current site there was plenty of empty space but now we’re close to full up,” Andy Knight, Sales Director, says. “We’ve having to modify the space to fit more stock in.” Larger premises have been accompanied by a growth in workforce, to around 30, “We’ve taken on more staff this year and we grew in personnel terms by 15 to 20%. If things continue the way they are then we’ll be looking to take more staff on again. “We’ve made a significant investment in our testing facilities. We check what comes in and we can now send test reports out to our customers. We don’t just rely on material certificates – this is something our customers are asking for. Dropped object prevention platform www.preventdrops.com launched This online platform does not guard against bird droppings, comets or asteroids falling from the sky, but instead focuses on accidents arising from items that fall from multi-level worksites. Dropped object risks account for a significant number of severe accidents in the offshore and other labor intensive industries. Westmark BV’s new website offers simple and affordable solutions to prevent such accidents and improve safety. According to the Health & Safety Executive Offshore Division, approximately 55% of all accidents on board a drilling rig or well operating platform are caused by dropped objects. The other 45% of accidents are caused by falling from heights, slips, trips and falls, handling or tools and machinery operations. Working at heights, beneath scaffolding or areas where overhead work is being performed puts workers and the public below at risk of being injured by dropped objects. A dropped object is, according to oil & gas multinational Chevron, “Any object, with the potential to cause death, injury or equipment/ environmental damage that falls from its previous static position under its own weight.”

The following items are considered dropped objects: ■■ Hand tools being used at heights ■■ Hand tools/equipment left behind after working at height ■■ Equipment mounted at a height that, following contact, vibration or environmental conditions, could fall, i.e., piping, lights, cameras, rigging gear etc ■■ Lifting operations. operates the wastewater treatment facilities in Schwoerstadt and Rheinfelden-Herten as well as several rainwater overflow basins. The wastewater treatment facility in Rheinfelden-Herten has been in operation since 1980 and has been converted and reconditioned in recent years so that it meets the latest technical standards. This wastewater treatment facility now satisfies the highest requirements and with a population equivalent of 47,000 has reached a size that also guarantees sufficient disposal capacity for future generations. Thanks to a total investment of EUR 7.5 million in the latest technologies, the Wastewater Association has reduced pollutants further, which has a positive impact on the water quality of the natural watercourses. The methane gas produced in the digestion tower is used to power a gas engine in the facility's own co-generation plant. The generator driven by this produces an average of 105 kilowatts/hour. This means that up to 50% of the energy required can be generated by the facility itself. T +44 (0)1952 677432 sales@busch.co.uk www.buschvacuum.com/uk

LASER DOCKING™ SYSTEM FOR TRUCKS & TRAILERS

Laser Runway Lights for Freight Terminals and Warehouses ‘Coast Lasers’ has introduced a unique approach to backing trailers into tight loading spaces. They have lasers that project green laser lines down each side of the loading dock and down the side of the loading ramps. From the perspective of the drivers backing trailers into a dock, these lines are clearly visible. This means that errors in judgment are minimised, trailer centering to docks is improved, trailer to loading dock backing speed is faster. Health & Safety, and less damage to adjacent trailers and docks is also a cost-effective benefit to consider. Laser lines are visible on all surfaces including water, mud, gravel and snow! Here’s how it works: The system uses two GLX Green Laser Modules with line generators that draw lines down both sides of a trailer. The tractor drivers can see the reflections of the lines in the wing mirrors on the side of the tractors over 100 feet away from the dock. The system works best in early morning, evening and night times when traffic is heaviest. The GLX has numerous uses in industry where Trial Hire £95.00 accurate lines and layouts are required. Applications of U.K. Mainland these lasers is limited only by the imagination. Please request Prices and Specifications. Thanking you in anticipation.

International expansion of the company outside its home market in The Netherlands, started when the founder moved across the border in 1970. When the political scene changes dramatically in Europe, we took the challenge to move into the Eastern part of Europe swiftly with own operations. Customers however did not only ask for supply of Verder’s products in Europe but drove the

Maximise flow of typical nippled systems with Bifold components With traditional nippled pneumatic control circuits Bifold elements are capable of the highest possible flow in the market but the output is restricted by the diameter of the nipples. Optimise flow with Bifold patented modular solution Bifold developed an unrestricted common bore system that optimises the high flow capability of their components. Bifold have furthered this logic and developed a range of patented Filter Boosters removing as many elements as possible from the flow line including the filter and regulator, amplifying the possible flow for any given tube size. This

principle results in smaller tube sizes being used and can be supplied in up to a 2” connection. Nationwide Hygiene Group reached its 30 year milestone last year. Nationwide Hygiene was first registered in November 1986, in Newcastle upon Tyne. As it expanded, it moved into its first standalone head office in South London in 1993. As more sales growth was enjoyed, the head office was relocated in 2007, to its current location of Chesterfield in Derbyshire. Throughout its 30 years, it has seen steady sales growth across its market sector, taking it to a very impressive £166 million sales total. This consistent growth was recently recognised by the London Stock Exchange, when it was recognised as one of the 1,000 Companies to Inspire Britain. In order to be included in the list, companies

Printing prime labels with Primera’s LX-series

Pentagon Plastics Ltd: Moulding Britain since 1972

On-demand and in-house label printing has grown from being exotic to something that manufacturers of all types and sizes use frequently or even exclusively. Not only smaller manufacturers are in need of short to mediumrun, full-colour customised product labels as a way to increase their sales numbers by making their products stand out through innovative packaging and labelling.

Pentagon Plastics are looking forward to exhibiting at this year’s EM Live event. Bringing a firm focus on their technical moulding and toolmaking capabilities, visitors to the show will be able to see a wide selection of injection moulded products from various industry sectors. Alongside a wide range of technical mouldings, Pentagon will also be showcasing a selection of their bespoke modular insert tooling, which is widely used in the product development and low volume stages of a project before moving on to full manufacture.

But finding a cost-effective and convenient way to produce highquality, colour labels has not been easy. Primera Technology, a leading manufacturer of high quality laser and inkjet-based label printers, has successfully developed short to medium-run label solutions. Using intelligent technology, Primera creates systems that can design, print and finish labels of any shape or form. “Smaller companies usually start with pre-designed or even handmade labels, but when they get bigger they need to professionalise the label production,” says Andreas Hoffmann, Managing Director of Primera’s EMEA office Primera Technology Europe. “For start-up and small business our entry-level colour label printers LX500e and LX900e are the best choice.” All LX-series models are equipped with everything that’s needed from designing to printing labels, including two label design software applications. But any other preferred design program can be used to

print labels directly from. As printed labels can include photos, graphics, illustrations, text and barcodes, there’s virtually no limit in creating the perfect label for your product. See them in action Primera’s UK distributor KTEC GROUP will showcase the LX-series inkjet label printers and the CX/FX laser printing and finishing systems at following shows: ■■ Label&Print (co-located with Packaging Innovations): Stand H6, NEC Birmingham, 1-2 March 2017 ■■ Pro2Pac: Stand N600, ExCeL London, 20-22 March 2017.

At Pro2Pac, representatives of Primera Technology Europe will join the team of KTEC.

service including Design Assistance, Development, Toolmaking, Plastic Injection Moulding and Post moulding operations. Allowing them to work with customers from the very early stages of product design right through to final production, which in turn delivers extensive customer confidence and satisfaction.

Customer Story – JS Baird & Sons Like many farms, JS Baird & Sons use a considerable amount of electricity and also require a reliable source of heat. Based in Angus, Scotland, JS Baird & Sons operate a mixed farm including arable, organic sheep and cattle, chickens, organic hens and various renewable technologies. Always looking for the most environmentally responsible option, JS Baird & Sons became interested in Biomass CHP

technology to generate electricity and heat for their farm. “When I first became aware of Biomass CHP technology, widespread manufacture was limited and Re2 were the only company who had produced multiple units at the time,” said Diarmid Baird. “When I approached Re2 they had already produced over 400 units. None of the other available solutions on the market had the heritage, experience or reliability of Re2.” After installing the Re2 Biomass CHP unit JS Baird and Sons were very impressed with the results they have experienced so far. The heat is used in their broiler chicken shed and their

grain drying floor to dry 500 tons of grain during harvest and when it’s not drying grain it dries wood chip the rest of the time. The electricity is used in all the farm buildings, residential houses, grain drying fans and chicken shed; the surplus energy is exported to the grid. “My farm electricity bill has completely disappeared. It allows me to operate my chicken broiler shed in optimal conditions including winter time and I can now dry grain faster and at virtually no extra cost avoiding the use of fossil fuels,” said Diarmid Baird.

With proven running hours the Re² Biomass CHP plant is the most advanced and reliable technology in the industry. It future proofs any business model and enables operators to generate diversified income. To learn more about the Re2 and their Biomass CHP plant, please visit: www.holz-kraft.com or contact our sales team: Matthias von Senfft, Tel: +49 (0)8773 70798162, email: matthias.vonsenfft@holz-kraft.de.
