Product Innovation Award

Passion for pumps been our leading criteria from day one when selecting products and suppliers,” commented Sales Manager, Duncan Brown. “Our exceptional pump technology is very different from anything else on the market as we design our products to tackle specific tasks. “Our customers benefit from their ease of use allowing for fast, efficient operation, less damage and advanced technology. We put our heart into pumps and ensure each customer is extremely satisfied with the level of service they receive.” Best Practice UK Is extremely proud to present Verder with its richly deserved Product Innovation Award for their continuous commitment to providing innovative pumps and pumping solutions. Over 50 years’ experience in the industry has led the company to become a highly respected name when it comes to quality equipment and cost-effective fluid handling solutions. Customers throughout the world in industries such as Water and Wastewater, Printing, Chemical, Food and beverage, Construction, Pharmaceutical and many more, have benefitted highly from their superior products and services. The new Verderflex Vantage 5000 is just one example of how Verder has excelled when it comes to innovation and quality. Making a spectacular addition to the ever growing product range, the Vantage 5000 is at the cutting edge of peristaltic pump technology – being the very first on the market to include an intuitive touch-screen. Its cased tube pump offers excellent levels of dosing accuracy, at high discharge pressures exceeding 7 bar (100 psi). Used for water treatment, food flavouring, chemical dosing, pharmaceutical and brewery applications, the system is a gentle pumping solution that has a higher flow than other leading brands and highly accurate stepper controlled dosing. Its features include a state of the art touch screen through which the system is programmed and a USB port which allows for back up giving the user massive security. Easy to set up, the unit requires no manual which is a major step forward in this industry.

The Verderflex Rollit is another notable product in the range. The dry running roller pump is ideal for those who are concerned with contamination. As the pump requires no lubrication, contamination is animated. The intelligent system has high flow rates and is designed to operate at low temperatures. Unlike similar systems, if the Rollit runs dry it will not brake but still run until it is refilled. This saves a great deal of time and money and systems can be costly to fix.

Verder’s offering however, doesn’t just stop at top quality products. Their team of highly experienced and fully trained staff also provide a service which is second to none. These expert services include first rate pump repair, maintenance and overhaul services plus end-to-end project management and, if you require a chemical dosing or a pumping solution, the Verder Service team can provide consultation, design and drawings, build and installation, commissioning and contract maintenance. From extremely humble beginnings the family run company was founded in 1959 by Andre Verder. It began its life as an entrepreneurial trading company in different industrial and laboratory products and has grown significantly over the years – now operating worldwide from 27 sites in 20 countries, employing around 1,000 staff with a strong presence in Europe, America, Africa and Asia. “Innovation and technology have

You’ve de-cluttered your office, now de-clutter your data You have spent ages clearing out paper files, maybe even achieved some success at becoming a paperless office. You sit at your desk and all around you is calm and organised with not a single pot plant out of place – utopia! You then turn on your computer… You look at your screen and you see a myriad of shortcuts to files and programs – your office de-clutter has been replaced with computer clutter. Valuable information is scattered across countless files, databases and programs in just the same way as your paper files were scattered around your office in filing cabinets and in-trays. So much for progress Introducing Budgie, Single View Data Management by Bluerock. Designed to streamline your back-office administration and centralise your financial information and project data within a single application. Operating in real time, Budgie is ideal for organisations dealing with large quantities of data that must be managed, recorded and shared securely and efficiently. An enterprise level Cloud-based platform, Budgie works across multiple departments, multi-user and multi-site operations as well as providing remote workers with easily accessible information around the clock.

By removing duplicates and eradicating importing and exporting data between systems, the risk of data corruption and loss is eliminated. This gives Budgie a significant advantage over running multiple disconnected programs, saving time and money in the process. Expenditure is controlled at source with budgets validated and reconciled during distribution. Meanwhile, orders are raised and processed courtesy of an end-to-end management workflow that helps prevent the occurrence of fraudulent invoices and accidental overpayments. Commitment to Innovation Key to Long Term Success Responding to market and consumer insight with relevant and agile innovation is vital to the continual improvement of core products and services, according to Dr Helene Roberts, group marketing and innovation director at leading packaging manufacturer, LINPAC. The LINPAC commitment to innovation has been recognised at the 2016 UK Packaging Awards. The company has been shortlisted in three categories: Packaging Company of the Year, Rigid Plastic Pack of the Year and Resource Efficient Pack of the Year. The recognition is partly due to the launch of the LINPAC poultry split pack developed in collaboration with Tesco and Cargill to provide convenience to the consumer through portion control and to address food waste issues. The company’s response to the core societal issue of food waste is particularly pertinent in today's market. A recent international survey by Euromonitor found that 64% of respondents try to have a positive impact on the environment on an everyday basis. However, whilst most consumers actively try to have a positive

impact, they still place financial constraints, logistical issues and convenience over helping the environment. With its novel Tesco Cargill split pack, LINPAC offers the consumer both strong environmental credentials and outstanding pack performance. The LINPAC Tesco Cargill split pack has a specially designed perforation that allows the consumer to split the tray into two separate sealed compartments. This gives the householder the option to exercise portion control as well as prevent food waste by saving one chicken breast for later. Commitment to Excellence

Providing Specialised Laboratory Solutions After its establishment as Biopharma Process Systems in 1989 by Tony Gaster, Biopharma Group quickly became a leading supplier of equipment to pharmaceutical, biotech and process industries in the UK and Ireland. Although originally specialising in freeze drying technologies, the business, which is based in Winchester, later expanded to include solvent removal (evaporation) and high pressure homogenisation ranges along with process equipment such as vial handling solutions and powder filling equipment. Due to the success of the equipment sales division, in 1997 the company expanded to add an independent R&D and lab consultancy to a world-wide customer base in the form of Biopharma Technology Ltd. The consultancy division is committed to providing a worldclass service to its customers, whether it would Process Systems and Biopharma Technology Ltd. and became CEO of the business, with a view to actively progress both divisions to meet the rapidly evolving requirements of the freeze drying and related industries. This included opening divisions to specifically service the USA (Biopharma Technology LLC in 2012) and France (Biopharma Technologies France in 2014) and becoming exclusive territory agents for products such as SP Scientific, Cuddon Freeze Dryers, Genevac solvent evaporators and concentrators, Avestin high pressure homogenisers, PennTech vial handling solutions, Kinematics and Controls Corp. powder fillers, and Sepiatec preparative chromatography solutions. Biopharma in France aids French speaking customers by combining the elements from equipment sales and service with access to the expertise of the consultancy division, while Biopharma Technology LLC in the USA is focused on providing analytical instruments, training courses and independent consultancy services for those using freeze drying technologies. be in the pharmaceutical, academic, food or health labs. In order to ensure all practices are controlled, safe and reliable for staff, customers and the products handled, the team adopted a Quality Management System (compliant with ISO 900) based around the highest possible laboratory, documentation and health and safety practices. This essentially allows its clientele to benefit from a one-stop shop solution, which includes the services of an independent lab assisting with everything from product and cycle development/analysis through to full contract research collaboration, scale-up and optimisation. In 2008, Andrew Cowan bought both Biopharma

Biopharma is different in the respect that it is not a catalogue company; its aim is to work with and provide its customers with equipment and/or services that best meet their process requirements whilst remaining on-hand to deliver advice and assistance thereafter. Its philosophy is to augment its clients’ in-house expertise; working together to make each project a success by agreeing to an appropriate budget and work programme (whether arranging a single cycle run, individual analysis or complete formulation development scheme). Looking to the future, Biopharma is now offering more related product ranges that have synergetic characteristics to effectively help customers reach optimum results on the projects; especially across Europe and the USA. This is as well as the on-going development of its own analytical instruments; currently available is the Lyostat5 freeze drying microscope and Lyotherm3 frozen state analyser using DTA & impedance technologies (more from the instruments development team can be expected during 2017).

Renewable Energy Specialist of the Year

Making Renewable Energies Competitive Best Practice is delighted to present its readers with a feature commending Spanner RE² GMBH for achieving its highly coveted Renewable Energy Specialist of the Year profile. Making efficient use of residual wood, Spanner Re² GmbH is a business dedicated to the production of Biomass CHP’s for customers with a high heat demand. Although established in 2004 by Helmut Spanner and Thomas Bleul, who had strategised to address the gap in the market for pellet boilers, the organisation’s roots date back 50 years with the formation of its parent company Otto Spanner GmbH. Diversifying from the automotive market, which was the core focus of the German brand, Spanner Re² took a more independent route in order to concentrate on the renewable energy faction. Following contact with the inventor of wood gasification units

with the feed in tariffs by the end of March in the UK. Dave Priestley, Sales Manager & Matthias von Senfft, Sales Manager at Spanner RE2

in 2006, the team sold their first product two years later and have progressed significantly to offer clients innovative and environmentally-conscious products based on proven (and cost-effective) regenerative power generation technologies. In summary, Spanner RE² is an internationally acknowledged manufacturer specialising in the provision of compact, decentralised wood cogeneration plants, turnkey pellet heating systems and complete solutions for the purpose of drying wood chips. Its activities can be carried out effectively courtesy of its two strategically placed business units; the first being the Spanner Re² wood cogeneration plant, which generates heat and electricity simultaneously with its proprietary technology, and the

second being a comprehensive biomass heating system production facility that manufactures and distributes pellet and wood chip heating systems, wood furnaces and tiled stove insets. All of Spanner RE²’s trusted products have achieved ‘advanced gasification’ classification by OFGEM in the UK and can be purchased direct for added customer convenience. Its newest release is EnergyBlock, which features a wood gasification unit, cogeneration unit and intelligent control centre for heat and electricity generation. This innovation has been repeatedly recognised for its customisable and coordinated qualities and users appreciate its fast start-up, compact structure and capability to be fired with wood chips, pellets and briquettes. One of its most notable solutions is the Biomass CHP System, which cleverly converts natural wood chips into biomass electricity

and heat to provide economically attractive advantages and increased power yields (according to location and legal conditions). This particular product made a great impression at the LAMMA Show, the UK’s leading agricultural machinery equipment and service exhibition, which Spanner RE² attended last year as part of its mission to promote the benefits of utilising costcompetitive renewable energies. Although the company has sustained a large customer base consisting of hundreds of different organisations (namely agriculture and forestry businesses, hotels, restaurants and heat grids across Europe, Asia and North America), participating at the industryspecific trade event enabled Spanner to effectively network with prospective new clients. Visitors at the show were keen to enquire about the Biomass CHP and there was high interest in this solution, despite the uncertainty surrounding what will happen

Overall the Spanner team enjoyed a successful stint at the LAMMA Show and made the informed decision to increase their production capacity following this in order to more ably satisfy the demand experienced for their advanced renewable energy enhancing products. If you are interested in enquiring about these exceptional solutions then please don’t hesitate to get in touch at your earliest opportunity. The group of experienced professionals employed at Spanner RE² GMBH will be more than happy to provide you with the information you require over the phone or via email, and further details can be accessed by visiting the company website – supplied below – which is rife with interesting and informative online resources. Infection Control Specialist of the Year 2016

Touch-less Disinfection Services Best Practice UK is incredibly pleased to feature Sanondaf with its highly prestigious Infection Control Specialist of the Year (2016).

prevention is always better than cure. With Sanondaf you can set an appropriate regime in motion to provide a safer working and living environment – you can even take the Sanondaf challenge, which involves a free visit to assess hygiene risks onsite with an included report and bacterial swab test. For any additional information please consult the website for client testimonials and videos or contact a company representative today.

The Leading disinfection and decontamination franchise using completely touch-less pioneering technologies was founded in Malta in 2011 and has progressed to become a globally acknowledged business commended with a number of industry-specific awards. Three years after its establishment a UK base was formed and in the short space of time there are 25 franchise territories dotted across the country covering England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the Channel Islands. This widespread success is due to the highly effective method employed by Sanondaf. Its popularised Advanced Infection Prevention & Control system is universally appreciated for its ability to actively kill 99.99% or higher of harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi and mould (including common pathogens such as Norovirus, Flu, Salmonella, E-Coli, MRSA and high risk infectious agents such as Ebola, Hepatitis, TB and HIV). The environmentally friendly solution involves the application of a dry disinfectant mist which allows easy treatment of a room or space; cleansing the air of airborne pathogens whilst penetrating difficult to reach areas. This advanced form of fogging is clinical yet costeffective and can be safely conducted in a variety of environments with no risk to people, pets, plants or surfaces due to its non-corrosive quality and it doesn’t require to be rinsed or wiped. The fact the system can treat 100% of an area and its contents is a huge advantage and as a result the process gives complete peace of mind in care homes, hospitals, nurseries, veterinary centres, laboratories, food production facilities, pubs, operating theatres,

offices, sporting & social venues, restaurants and kitchens and public settings. Sanondaf Director Stuart White was keen to tell us more about how the procedure works, “We offer a highly efficient service on a proactive basis – usually at monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly intervals – based on the bespoke requirements of the client,” he explained. “Our mission is to help people live safely by reducing the risks associated with infection and cross contamination and we achieve this through our commitment to using the highest quality products, fully trained technicians and continuous product development.” He was also expressive about Sanondaf’s progressive path, “By the end of 2016, we had 33 technicians working for us across the UK and Ireland,” he continued. “With our national coverage we are now at the point where we can get to 95% of the UK within the space of just two hours. Our global growth is also substantial, as we have established a

presence in Mexico, Ecuador, Singapore and South Africa with hopes to launch in a further 3 countries by summer 2017.

“We are looking forward to expanding further and will be enhancing our range with a new disinfection product for air conditioning units (launched this spring). We began in the healthcare and education sectors and we have since diversified to treat high street organisations after acquiring custom from a number of well-known global retailers.”

Valves & Hydrant Pipe Fittings News

AVK Pentoflow mains to-meter range is ‘the solution to a number of problems’ incentives available to largescale developments and projects.

AVK, leading supplier of valves, hydrants, pipe-fittings and accessories, is seeing unprecedented interest in its new water mains-to-meter range, AVK Pentoflow, launched at No Dig Live. AVK Head of UK Marketing, Kieran Fitzpatrick, says, “AVK Pentoflow is the solution to problems utilities and developers have put up with for too long: through-life cost, resistance to damage on-site and durability when installed. AVK is now the one stop shop for the entire mains-to-meter range.” The AVK Pentoflow range of five products is constructed of durable materials, delivering leading edge boundary boxes, PE mechanical and push-fit connections, stop taps and ferrules. The company is now running trials for key utility customers, discussing

Developed for Totex, durability and on-site robustness “AVK Pentoflow has prompted a huge reaction from utilities, contractors and self-lay companies concerned with Totex in every aspect of their businesses,” explains Kieran. “We’re told this higher standard of product will deliver greater through-life value.” The class-leading AVK Pentobox, a meter boundary box with a composite Grade B Surface box tested to fully withstand an 8 tonne load, will still allow AMR signals to pass uninterrupted. The AVK Pentopush push-fit connection has a stronger but smaller construction and readily marries with existing and old pipework, reducing retrofit and pipe work expansion costs. The cost-savings begin when the AVK Pentoflow range is delivered to site because the range is designed for ease of installation and the products are not susceptible to the damage other less long-lasting products suffer. For example, the guard pipe is polypropylene, not fibre glass as in other systems, so it can withstand

the rigours of the construction site for prolonged periods. This means a contractor’s requirement to replace boundary boxes and fittings during construction is significantly reduced. One contractor reported that up to 50% of inferior mains to meter products may need replacing before a development was finished, due to onsite damage. This means the industry no longer requires contingency budgets for replacing damaged mains-to-meter products and contractors can now put in more competitive bids. One self-lay company predicted a £50,000 a year saving with the AVK Pentoflow range. www.avkuk.co.uk

Viscometry/Rheology As a world leader in viscosity measurements, it is no surprise that our fully trained staff have extensive experience in viscosity testing of a wide range of materials from liquids to pastes. 2. Texture Is your product too firm or not tacky enough? Do you wish to know how crush resistant your packaging materials are? Is it the flexibility or elastic properties of your product that you’re more concerned about? Or do you wish to objectively quantify how chewy or gummy your product is? Whatever your texture requirements are, look no further for the CT3 Texture Analyser with its wide choice of accessories and fixtures can determine the textural and structural attributes of most products and raw materials across most industries. Its test mode of compression and tension makes it applicable to almost any solid or semi-solid material. 3. Powder Flow Analysis A classic problem with powders is their failure to discharge reliably from storage containers such as silos, bins and hoppers. The powders may also incur unpredictable flow in dosing machines, feeders, and packaging machines. These flow obstructions can reduce the product quality due to variations in the mixture or variations in pack weight. Flow obstructions will also reduce productivity as the plant may need to shut down to correct the flow restrictions. Avoiding flow obstructions requires using the right material for the plant. This will mean selecting the right raw material from your supplier. Powder quality will vary from multiple suppliers due to the variability in particle size and distribution, moisture content and ingredients used. The selection process of raw materials is therefore essential in quality control to overcome blockages during powder discharge. The Brookfield Powder Flow Tester (PFT) can be used to predict potential flow obstructions for a given powder thus enabling the manufacturer to be better informed when selecting raw materials.

The company forms part of the privately held LISTA Group, which is recognised for being one of the largest suppliers of its kind, facilitating the workspace needs of a staggering 100,000 businesses. The global enterprise was founded in 1945 and employs 700 people across its fullyequipped manufacturing facilities, which can be found in Switzerland, Germany, Italy and the US (although LISTA also operates with several international subsidiaries and a dedicated trade network). The world leader has subsequently built itself an vast customer base comprising many esteemed clients; F1 race teams, Gulf Racing, Siemens, Alstom, Rolls Royce (Aerospace), UTC Aerospace, Mercedes Benz AMG HPP, JLR, Airbus, Rolex, Omega and Breitling being many core examples. The automotive market is one of LISTA’s main areas of focus, particularly with the substantial growth and modernisation that is recently taking effect within the

UK’s rail network. According to LISTA UK’s General Manager Chris HargreavesHeap this is an age where small and medium sized companies operating in the railway industry can step into the limelight (as opposed to shrinking away under top tier suppliers), and this has been made a possibility thanks to the vast government scheme that has been scheduled to run over the next five years. This £500,000 investment, which is part of a delivery programme centred on assisting SMEs, will provide these organisations with the opportunity to work in a more open and transparent market, acquiring custom both domestically and overseas. LISTA is a prime example of one of the businesses that will benefit from the initiative, gaining

TC Facilities Management (TCFM) is celebrating the successful mobilisation and ongoing delivery of Cleaning, Security, Catering, Post Room and Reception services at Arqiva. The contract, now into its 6th month is being managed by Raphael Sagula, FM Manager, TCFM.

Chris also wanted to stress that it is no longer acceptable for railways to perform with outdated layouts and antiquated tool storage units; for continued success and sustainability, it is essential for depots to integrate state-of-the-art engineering equipment, tools and infrastructure. For best practice and business benefits to be achieved innovation and technology must be at the forefront of an operation and a lean workshop and maintenance culture must be considered during refurb projects or depot planning to ensure quality, reliability and productivity. An example of revolutionary workspace apparatus comes in the form of LISTA’s recently remodelled L3627 workshop trolley, an ergonomic and mobile allrounder that has been enhanced with add-ons and partition materials to ensure usage in different environments. Features include a single (or double) drawer safety catch, a secure central locking system and protective ABS edging, and the model is now available with a non-slip plastic (or 40mm wooden) top to ensure suitability as a portable workbench. Please contact LISTA for further information.

The contract has seen over 100 members of staff being deployed by TCFM to provide these services at the 40 sites where Arqiva, a leading communications and media services company at the heart of the broadcast, satellite and mobile communications markets operates. Since going live with the contract at the end of May, TCFM have demonstrated their understanding of the values that Arqiva work to. One example has been supporting Work

Experience students on placement at Crawley Court, Winchester, after only 9 weeks of the contract going live. The TCFM staff were praised for their ability to explain their individual roles in providing the different services as part of the contract, as well as enabling each student to feel safe, secure and that Arqiva was a great place to come to work. RMIG’s new recoiling system further improving accuracy and quality Quality guarantee RMIG Ltd has recently purchased a new 1,250mm wide recoiling unit. The new unit allows for very accurate and tight recoiling of perforated coils. It is technically a more sensitive method, which makes the perforated material less prone to scratching or damage. This is an important advantage as such material is often pre-painted for architectural applications. Range of coils The new machine is capable of recoiling a range of thicknesses from 0.4mm to 2.0mm, and can recoil widths from 400mm to 1,250mm. The recoiling line is rated for a maximum weight of 4,500kg. Coils can be offered with or without cardboard inserts. Capacity With 1,500mm wide recoiling facilities at several of our plants, there is always plenty of capacity available. At our UK plant, the recoiling line is available on a 3-shift pattern.

Cleanroom Specialists News

A perspective on the development of cleanrooms through the ages Did you know that the concept of contamination control originated as early as the medieval period and on a slow boat from China?

Essentially, imagine the onion concept: each time a layer of the onion is peeled, the amount of particulate or contaminated risk to the product is reduced.

M+W Products is the go-to manufacturing facilities and cleanroom specialist provider for blue chip customers, strengthening its portfolio with projects delivered across the world. With the view of demonstrating innovative solutions, the company has examined the history of cleanroom technology and future advancements.

The integration of new technology and efficient solutions has ignited consideration for future controlled environmental procedures to limit the number of air changes per hour. Can future systems be both more efficient and challenge the tradition of multiple air changes and still ensure constant clean air?

Securing the environment has been the driving force in the pioneering development of the concept of the cleanroom. It may be hard to imagine, but man’s attempt to create as near a perfect and pure working environment can be traced back to Chinese lacquer work painters of centuries ago. They crafted the forerunner of what we now refer to as laminar air flow benches in order to produce lacquer work designs.

Their version required sailing out to sea in what are commonly known as junks (or djonks) – traditional sailing ships that are still used today – in order to work under the cleanest environment, far away from the contamination in workshops in the busy and polluted life experienced on land. In 1962, the modern cleanroom was adopted by American physicist Willis Whitfield, who wanted to remove dust particles. By installing HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters, Whitfield’s system was able to keep the levels of dust and other particles incredibly low within an enclosed room. This design allowed over 600 air changes per hour compared to 20 air changes per hour of previous clean, air conditioned rooms. The trick was that Whitfield applied technology to create an environment that could revive itself. Although this initial enclosure couldn’t hold much more than an adult human body, the stage had been built for the cleanroom to come of age. Much of the future technology since then and even today pays respect to the development of this laminar flow cleanroom.

The latest technological innovations related to cleanrooms show us that development is still being pursued more than 50 years after the first cleanroom technology was developed. The ability to manufacture products with consistent high quality relies on well implemented and well documented Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) code. Cleanliness is commonly achieved through the development of effective HEPA filtration and this is considered as clean as necessary for a GMP Grade A condition. Therefore, the best cleanrooms are the ones that are most effective in containing themselves from external air. This grade system is applicable in cases where processors and products are exposed during transportation, or operations that are required to be performed outside of sealed compartments.

Over the past 12 months, there has been a clear shift in the way laboratory users want their cleanrooms to be designed, not only to meet current requirements, but to future proof them for years to come. There is increasingly a focus on achieving a ‘showroom’ finish in cleanrooms. When it comes to a cleanroom, the only constant is change. Today’s cleanroom seems to be a lifetime away from Willis Whitfield’s air filter origination approximately 50 years ago. The increasing demand for cleanroom technologies from a wider variety of industries are driving the fact that cleanrooms need to be even more flexible in the future to accommodate what will be an upward trend in application extensions. Pipeline Cleaning News

Hazards associated with Water Quality in Closed Pipe Systems Pre-commission cleaning of closed circuit pipework systems and the subsequent monitoring of water quality are essential in any building. The implications of getting these wrong can be catastrophic. The resulting problems include disruption to occupants whilst systems are re-cleaned or, in the worst cases, complete closure of buildings whilst entire systems are ripped out and replaced due to early failure. But it seems that although the risks associated with open systems (where the circulating water might come into contact with humans) are generally appreciated, there is less awareness of the problems that can affect closed systems. A closed re-circulating pipework system is one which, as the name implies, is closed i.e. the water in them is not exposed to the atmosphere and is not significantly depleted due to evaporation or draw-off. The water is permanently enclosed and typically spends all of its time being heated, cooled and re-circulated in the process of delivering heating or cooling. All systems serving terminal devices from radiators to fan coil units or chilled beams are examples of closed systems.

Danger not ended All of this debris should therefore be removed by dynamic flushing of the system during pre-commission cleaning. But successful removal of these items does not end the danger. Most closed re-circulating systems are constructed, predominantly from carbon steel pipe. Carbon steel has the significant advantage of being both strong and cheap. However, as we should all remember from our school science days, in the presence of oxygen and water it will corrode rapidly i.e. within hours. Our high strength steel is replaced by low strength semi soluble particles of soft brown rust or, if the supply of oxygen is limited, black magnetite. Thick walled steel pipe has some tolerance

built into it and can survive for a while. Thin walled steel has less.

water should gradually become depleted thereby stifling the corrosion.

Dynamic flushing of pipework involves circulating highly oxygenated water through the pipes at high velocity. Hence, as we’re removing the problem of system debris we are potentially encouraging corrosion. As a result, following the dynamic flush, some form of chemical clean is usually essential to remove corrosion products from the surfaces of steel pipes.

However, corrosion protection regimes can go wrong and water quality monitoring is therefore essential.

Corrosion process potentially controllable In theory, once the system is put into operation, the corrosion process should be controllable. If there is no replacement of the water in the system, the oxygen in the

For, example whenever water is lost from a system, whether due to system modification or to replace a component, fresh oxygenated water is drawn in whilst water containing valuable corrosion inhibitor is lost. This combination can be sufficient to initiate a burst of corrosion. T +44 (0)1983 756783 info@parsloe-simpson.co.uk www.parsloe-simpson.co.uk

The potential problems start during construction. In large buildings, heating and cooling circuits can include pipes that are over a metre in diameter. In an ideal world, these pipes would be installed in a clean, debris free condition but in practice, nothing can be ruled out. Hard, hats, coke cans, plastic bags and even dead foxes have all been found inside systems. If left undetected, when the pumps are switched on, items such as these can cause major damage to expensive boilers, chillers and pumps. The smaller particles can be just as bad. Some modern control valves have clearances of less than half a millimetre. This means that sand, grit, jointing material or welding slag can cause blockages and consequent heating or cooling dead spots.

How direct Mercury Analysers can improve throughput of mercury analysis The accumulation of mercury throughout many processes can cause severe operational difficulties for a company. Mercury concentrations vary greatly and sample preparation procedures are labour intensive and time consuming. Analysing samples for mercury therefore remains a significant drain on resources and time. The DMA-1 and DMA-80 direct mercury analysers from Milestone, distributed in the UK by Analytix, are helping laboratories to optimise their mercury analysis processes. The DMA-1 is a manual single analysis system that is designed for laboratories with low sample throughput. The DMA-80 is an automatic sample analyser

that removes the requirement for in-house or bottled gases. Both analysers allow rapid direct mercury analysis of a wide range of sample types such as soils, waters, foods, fuels, polymers, and inorganic samples such as catalysts. They can analyse both solid and liquid samples in approximately five minutes per sample, with excellent sensitivity.

with capacity for 40 samples, designed for larger workloads. Neither system requires any sample preparation prior to analysis thus eliminating the risk of mercury loss and cross contamination. This also means ease of use, low running costs, and no need for handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals. In addition both systems have the advantage of ‘running on air’

Union Industries install refreshingly Palletiser with state of the Art Design efficient doors at Swizzels Union Industries has proved to be too tempting for Swizzels, the makers of Refreshers, Love Hearts and Parma Violets, which has had two of Union’s high-speed Bulldoors fitted at its Derbyshire warehouse. The confectionery manufacturer, which was established in 1928, required the doors to help maintain its exacting hygiene standards by acting as a pest control measure when the doors are in operation. Standing at 2.8m wide x 3.7m high and 2.8m wide x 3.0m high, the Bulldoors, which feature a Swizzels logo on the blades, are activated by radio control systems

Scheme which was introduced several years ago. This cover, which is included as standard, not only provides an extensive guarantee but also includes service visits from Union’s highly trained technicians as required. that are mounted onto the company’s forklift trucks. Union’s Bulldoor, which opens at approximately 1.6m per second, is ideal for high use external openings and will also help reduce any environmental ingress caused by the elements. The Bulldoor comes with free entry into Union’s Lifetime Warranty

In common with the other doors in the range, the Bulldoor also features Union’s highly-regarded ‘Crash-Out’ and ‘Auto-Reset’ damage protection facility which ensures the door remains operable if the heavy duty steel composite bottom beam is hit by a vehicle. In over 200 applications all over the world, the CSi TAROS palletiser has proven itself during the last 10 years. But after all these years, it was ready for an upgrade like never seen before. Therefore we gave it a brand new design representing the technological sophistication of the machine. In comparison with robotic palletisers in the market it houses much more technical complexity. As an operator or maintenance engineer you do not notice those technologies because of the simplicity of the controls. The HMI (control) panel is enlarged and has the look and feel of a modern, user friendly interface like we know from tablets and smartphones. With new technologies, like an app, it’s easy to get for instance machine diagnostics and energy consumption statistics. So, in short: TAROS 2 is fully (industrial) IoT prepared. But it is not only the design that has changed. Also the performance of the CSi TAROS palletiser has improved. It has a higher capacity (up to 60 cases per minute) with reduced energy consumption. Thus the machine can be applied both at the end of a production or packaging line or in a central, multi-line palletising solution. Another important feature is the gentleness of the product handling. A new turning device reduces product

contact to an absolute minimum even at high speed handling. Included in the new design is easy clean. This makes it the best choice, even in moist or dirty environments. Finally, it is available with a Siemens or Rockwell Allen Bradley control platform. T +44 (0)1953 452731 info@csiuk.co.uk www.csiportal.com

flexibility means we have secured a diversified client base – we have many customers in various industries across the world because we have the capability to offer individuals the amount of automation they need.” Enimac can design bespoke solutions to be implemented within existing production lines or even create entirely new and advanced prototypes, ensuring all clients’ needs are met and satisfied. Their modern technical offices use the latest hardware and most up to date mechanical design software. Better yet, their machine design phase includes the development of proprietary software, giving clients complete turnkey solutions without intermediaries.

International Business Development Manager Martin Buerger said, “As we are part of a tape converter, our solutions were developed from real tape application situations. Our tape knowledge is something a machine-only manufacturing company doesn't usually have, and I think this differentiation places us in good stead for the future.

Enimac welcomes prospective clients to send them samples. Enimac will apply tape as requested by the client, film the process and even send the materials back for quality control, all with no additional obligation. And of course, they also welcome prospective clients to visit them or one of their distributors such as Newtown Packaging in the UK.

“We don’t just sell our customers automation, but complete tape application solutions. Many of the problems our customers experience have been witnessed by us before, enabling us to deal with them successfully. This

Hand hygiene in healthcare needs improvement Staff at outpatient care facilities are failing to follow hand hygiene guidance in the USA according to a recent report on the Science News website. The article is based around a study highlighted in the American Journal of Infection Control, which is published by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC.) The research was carried out by staff from the University of New Mexico and the New Mexico Health Department. The medical students who were carrying out the assessments only observed a 63% compliance with appropriate hand hygiene policies. The report’s authors said, “This project highlights the importance of assessing both the report of recommended infection prevention policies and practices, as well as behaviour compliance through observation audits. “These findings highlight the need for ongoing quality improvement initiatives regarding infection prevention policies

and practices in outpatient settings.” The positioning of suitable hand washing facilities is crucial – they need to be available where they are required – and where they can help ensure the greatest level of hand hygiene compliance. Portable hot water hand washing for healthcare situations, the TEAL Stop n’ Wash is entirely self-contained and needs no mains water service or drainage connections. The synchronised display takes you through the automatic TEAL Stop n’ Wash programme and 7 rubbing actions as laid down on the National Health Service Guidelines. T +44 (0)121 770 0593

Tiles improve warehouse efficiency

Eight years ago, David Moore, (Pictured) who was then the Sales Supervisor at Thorite’s Bradford head office, applied for the position and was appointed the Group Purchasing Manager. However, David missed the contact with customers and has now gone back to the role of Sales Supervisor of the Huddersfield Sales and Service Centre.

OEM Automatic UK markets and sells components for industrial automation, currently representing approximately 50 leading suppliers and acting as their local sales organisation in the UK. Customers come from all sectors of industrial automation and include machine builders, control panel builders, system integrators and selected strategic distributors. As part of an initiative to develop the warehouse OEM wanted a floor that would improve the working conditions of its staff and contribute to efficiency. The business also required a flooring system that would reduce – or eliminate – cyclical maintenance and provide a smart, tough work surface. Manufacturer of interlocking floor tiles Ecotile designs and produces its comprehensive range at its UK production facility – providing durable and safe flooring solutions that can

be installed with minimal disruption in commercial and industrial applications around the world. Logistics manager, Adam Lever-Parkin said, “The Ecotile team installed over 500m2 of tiles in 2 days with very little disruption. We used a combination of the standard tiles in the main area of the warehouse where the Reach truck and Bendi truck operate and the anti-fatigue comfort tiles where our operatives are standing for long periods. It has really improved the appearance and the working conditions of the warehouse and after 3 years it still looks great.” www.ecotileflooring.com

David joined Thorite in 1982 as a delivery driver before moving into branch based sales at the Leeds Branch and then field sales at the Huddersfield Branch. After that it was the first of two supervisory positions at Sheffield and Bradford. Apart from a break of a few years, David has worked for Thorite for twenty-six years. David said, “I have always enjoyed the sales environment and when the Sales Supervisors position at Huddersfield became available it was at a time when I needed a new challenge. We have a really knowledgeable staff here, who

The benefits of installing Power Factor Correction The benefits of Power Factor Correction are often misunderstood, and positively impact much more than just the monthly electricity bill. Financial Savings Savings on business costs will go straight on to the bottom line and it’s common to find financial directors and site managers charged with shaving a significant percentage off costs. Cutting the monthly electricity bill by a few thousand pounds a year should be a good start. Most Power Factor Correction installations can give a return of investment in under 2 years and with a lifetime of 10 to 15 years will pay for themselves many times over. Carbon Emission Reduction Being a visibly greener industrial manufacturer elevates a company’s image and standing with suppliers and customers regardless of the increasing legislation. It also plays a significant role in reducing the carbon footprint of the end product. All Power Factor

Correction systems supplied by Power Capacitors offer an industry agreed carbon reduction figure. Maintenance Reduction Power Factor Correction acts to reduce the electrical demand, peak and otherwise, which by default reduces the loading on infrastructure and makes more useful capacity available. Reducing the strain on cables, boards and electrical systems will have a significant effect on maintenance and equipment failures. There are numerous other benefits associated with the installation of Power Factor Correction. Contact www.powercapacitors.co.uk
