“We provide a friendly service with a sensible and realistic approach to tree management,” Richard said. “Practical experience is critical in this industry and this is what we have. There is a lack of knowledge about how much of a constraint trees are in the planning system early discussions with an arboriculturalist in the design stage can save a developer thousands of pounds and considerable amounts of time.” As professional consultants, all tree-related issues (including the handling of dangerous trees) are dealt with in as supportive and costeffective manner as possible. Faster. Safer. Simpler. Ian Arbuckle, who restructured and rebranded LINIAN in 2015.

Here at Building Practices UK we are pleased to congratulate LINIAN for achieving our highly regarded Building Excellence profile. The company, which is based in Glasgow, specialises in the provision of a fast-fixing cable clip that is a safe and reliable means of attaching cables to construction materials with an unparalleled level of ease and efficiency. Originally set up in 2007, the business was later acquired by brother and sister team Lynne Jhangeer and

The growth experienced has been significant, as the organisation, which previously ran from one outlet in Scotland, now boasts a network operational throughout the UK (with 300 sites). This progression emphasises the true success of this pioneering fireproof clip, which has been – and continues to be – specified by professionals on a local, national and international basis. Particularly popular with electrical and alarm contractors, the innovation comes with many notable benefits. The clip is great value for money as it cuts down labour costs, and because of its steel structure it is very robust and has

a melting point in excess of 1000oC. The single component design, which is unique within the market, offers easy installation and safe results whilst eliminating the need for gas guns or the disposal of cylinders. “We can offer customers a patented product that has proven to be 70% faster to install than the more traditional methods,” commented LINIAN’S Technical Director Ian Arbuckle. “It also meets the most recent building requirements – these are the two major benefits: its compliancy with industry standards and time-saving capability. In addition, our fire clip is a whole lot neater – because you don’t need to go through the hassle of screwing or drilling, it delivers a much nicer finish.” The invention has been refined after years of concentrated research and technical input and is now renowned for its expert design and effectiveness in saving time, money and most

importantly, lives. It has been tested in accordance with BSEN50200 PH120 and DIN 4102-12 E90 classification and meets the demands recommended in Escape Routes BS7671 Amendment 3 for fire rated cable fixings. “We strive to provide our customers with a faster, safer and simpler solution that will make their jobs easier and operations more profitable,” Ian continued. “The feedback we have received has been incredibly positive and those who have purchased our fire clip keep buying it because they love how functional it is. Great contractors have said that they will never go back to their previous methods after trying it.”

range of industry sectors; hospitality, healthcare, education and energy being several key examples. To find out how you can benefit from this simple yet incredibly useful product, which can be seamlessly installed in brickwork, concrete, masonry, wood studs and wood beams, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the team today.

Over 80 Years of Brick Making Excellence Owned and ran by brick making expert Peter Minter, the company’s story began back in 1936 when the Bulmer family bought a small brickyard near the Essex/ Suffolk border. Peter’s father, a builder by trade, was extremely experienced in manufacturing specialist bricks to restore buildings during the war and passed his legacy down to his family. Peter took over the company in 1974, making bespoke bricks to suit specific requirements. Building Practices UK is extremely proud to present Bulmer Brick and Tile Company with its richly deserved Building Excellence Profile. Renowned experts in the field of brick making, the Bulmer Brick and Tile Company are a small, family run business specialising in the restoration and rejuvenation of buildings throughout the UK, both large and small.

Today, Bulmer Brick and Tile continues to create bricks from the finest London Clays. They are all handmade using traditional methods of making, drying and are fired in a coal burning, down draught kiln, providing a distinctive finish that blends seamlessly with the original work. “Having learned a great deal from my father all that time ago, I am highly experienced in the traditional methods of making bricks,”

commented Peter. “These methods are combined with modern techniques to provide a truly spectacular result, one that creates bricks to fit in perfectly with the original brick work.

Their renowned expertise have been showcased in many large projects for the National Trust, English Heritage and Historic Royal Palaces, as well as small private work undertaken by individuals.

“All our workers are highly skilled in more than one technique and dedicated to providing the highest level of customer service. Each and every project from large to small, from full restoration or extensions to one off bricks, is treated with the same care and attention, as we strive to meet the customers’ exact requirements.”

“At Bulmer Brick and Tile Company we put the building first and strive to provide a seamless repair or stunning restoration,” Peter continued. “We discuss everything with the client prior to any work being started and provide professional advice and guidance throughout the process. We never take cheap short cuts and ensure we work within specific budgets at competitive prices, offering great value for money.

Producing approximately, 300,000 bricks per year, the Bulmer Brick and Tile Company has the knowledge and ability to create a whole host of bricks from almost any century. Their wide range of facings and specials can be made with almost any texture, from coarse veined to smooth with some 150 different sizes of facing and a range of over 5000 special shapes, including all standard plinths, squints and copings, and extends to purpose made chimney bricks, terracotta, mullions, jambs, floor bricks, pamments, decorative plaques, garden edgings and a full range of rubbing blocks.

Bulmer Brick and Tile Company is a long established family business on the site of a brick making yard dating back centuries. Bulmer bricks are made from the finest London Clays, dug continually from our own clay seams since Tudor times. All our bricks are entirely hand made using traditional methods. We specialise in restoration and conservation of old buildings; working closely with architects and contractors to produce our facing brick to the specification required for your particular building. Although we aim to have a stock of the more common sizes, dimensions and texture are made to order, so that each building receives the correct brick for the work. The kilns are unique coal fired down-draught kilns, loaded, unloaded and fired by hand in a long and labourious process, ensuring each and every brick has had our personal attention. No artificial colours, tints or dyes are used in our process. The beautiful range of colours from orange to dark red and purple comes purely from the firing process, just as it would have been over the centuries. We make a huge variety of brick specials, including terracotta, plinths, squints, decorative chimney bricks, string course bricks and over 500 different types of coping which increases on a weekly basis. All the specials are moulded from wooden moulds, which are made in our own carpentry workshop. We also have a range of garden edging and decorative plaques depicting floral patterns, some of which are made from original moulds over 100 years old. We have our own brick cutting workshop where we can create cut and rubbed arches, either loose or on steel lintels ready to lift into position, and can cut specials or cut and bond from customer supplied material. Our own clay is prepared by a variety of methods to produce a BBT Fully Washed Rubber for use in fine Georgian Rubbed work and in other grades that can be easily cut and rubbed on site if required.

Due to the nature of the job, and the need to use tools and small fixings, the introduction of SkyScreen™ successfully minimised the risk of injury or damage caused by items accidently being dropped from height. Nationwide Platforms’ latest innovation in safety, SkyScreen™, was recently introduced on the construction of London’s iconic Greenwich Peninsula Low Carbon Energy Centre by main contractor Kier, in order to minimise the risk of objects being dropped from the basket of an access platform when working at height. Designed by renowned sculpture and artist, Conrad Shawcross, the Energy Centre’s 48 metre chimney required 137 unique panels installing to create what Shawcross described as its ‘optic cloak’. To ensure the panels were installed both safely and efficiently, a spider crane was placed at the top of the building’s

Avantgarde FM, Delivering Services Nationwide

AvantgardeFM, a national operator deploying a unique provision of site services across the United Kingdom (UK), have continued to strengthen their region by region presence and overall UK market share throughout 2016. With a core business, which deploys accredited site based security officers, mobile patrolling, and CCTV deployments, AvantgardeFM have, in 2016, further diversified by developing a wrapped facilities management (FM) service offering. Avantgarde Ltd, founded in 2009, has quickly become an established industry leader managing the security concerns of the industry’s largest construction contractors. The enablement, at scale,

of an additional scope of services within AvantgardeFM has been made possible through the integration of Elite FM, itself an established national provider. The increase in service capabilities with the addition of cleaning, specialist labour and reactive maintenance, has enabled AvantgardeFM to expand as a successful site based end-toend facilities provider. The integration of the two companies to form AvantgardeFM brings additional dynamism and substantial managerial and complimentary service provisions to the market. Thanks to the benefits of integrated costs, the wrapped one company service deployment continues to bring valuable dividends to AvantgardeFM’s national client base. The successful service expansion has opened new avenues for AvantgardeFM, which is now well positioned to deliver a greater role in support of the individual phases of each project lifecycle. www.avantgardefm.com

Landscape News

Tree Preservation Orders – They Don’t Have to Stop Your Development Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) have been with us since the Town and Country Planning Act 1947. They are a common feature of the urban landscape. There are those who assume the presence of a TPO will stop a development from proceeding. This is not the case. The process does, however, benefit from informed guidance. If the TPO is new, there is a small window to ensure it is appropriate. If not, we can object and make representations. We then look at the type of TPO which has been made, and ask why it was made? This will inform the planning process. Sometimes, a TPO is very specific. It could, however, be general. I used to make new TPOs for a local authority. Sometimes, I was looking to protect a particular tree. There were

occasions when I couldn’t access a site and so made a TPO to protect all of the trees within the site. We then assess the trees on the site (and within influencing distance around it). An initial feasibility assessment will inform the process. Once we have identified the trees which matter, we can begin to design the development to reflect this. In most situations, there are ways by which we can work around trees which need to be retained. There can be trees for which retention is unrealistic. Here, careful technical argument is needed to justify the proposals. Siltbuster, Monmouth: This engineering practice is moving to a new site. They need to create a new access. A tree with a TPO was in the way. I identified that the tree was in decline. Removing it would enable good design. The tree was replaced with new trees in a landscaping scheme which enhanced the setting. Permission was granted. T +44 (0)1981 570426 www.cedarwoodtreecare.co.uk

In this way, it has a clear edge over wooden structures –

The Best Domestic and Residential Sewage Treatment Plants

Sewage News

BIOROCK specialises in the provision of compact and non-electric sewage treatment plants that can be used to either enhance existing septic tanks or to work, with great effect, as standalone solutions suitable for the sustainable processing of wastewater. The company has been leading the industry with its remarkable treatment technologies ever since its establishment in 1988, servicing the needs of customers within the residential and commercial markets with its onsite and decentralised innovations. The UK-based company is best known for its revolutionary range of new generation septic systems. This includes MONOBLOCK, an all-inone piece of equipment that operates with a high performance primary tank that passes water through the incorporated effluent filter. The clarification of wastewaster retains oils, fats, greases and organic solids by means of a discharge method employing the BIOROCK reactor, which then treats the liquid using a natural aerobic digestion process and intelligent mode of filtration. The compact plug-andplay solution comes with two discharge options for heightened customer convenience: Gravity Discharge (low outlet) and Pumped

Discharge (high outlet). Both variations are suitable for application in rural dwellings which are not connected to the mains, and feature discrete and pre-assembled purification units that ensure a speedy installation. Also available from the globally acclaimed pioneer is MULTIROCK, which, because of its integration of multiple components, is best suited for larger capacities (commercial systems such as small municipalities, remote communities, schools, office buildings, shopping centres, golf courses and campsites). The setup of an alternating flow from a Flow Control Chamber (FCC) and a Splitter-Box (SB) creates an evenly divided flow to the individual treatment units in which they feed. The BIOROCK solutions are effective in removing 99% of pollutants and have proven valuable in the majority of soil and site conditions (including peak and zero-flow loading periods). Advantages include minimal maintenance, excellent effluent quality, reduced running costs and a completely silent and odourless operation that promises a long lifecycle and low carbon footprint. Be Smart...Colour Smart... Foil Smart...

With woodgrain and coloured window and door options fast becoming the most popular choice amongst homeowners, laminated products feature heavily in the future of the double-glazing market. Lamination involves bonding a layer of film to a variety of substrates including PVC and aluminium to create not only a premium decorative finish but also a quality hardwearing product. Foiled frames are resilient to some, wind, rain and frost for the entire life of the product, require minimal cleaning and will never need painting or re-painting. The problem facing the industry is that lead

times for foiled products have been notoriously long and an increased demand will only make the situation worse. Although Foil Smart have only been trading as a company for two years, our twenty plus years’ experience in the foiling industry meant we identified this issue at an early stage, which is why we offer a two-week lead time as standard and on regular repeat orders we can halve this to just one week. Colour options are almost infinite as we can supply a vast range of films including Renolit, Hornschuch and Haogenplast in a variety of effects. Another unique service Foil Smart are able to offer is repair foiling. Our staff are qualified to repair most foiling problems on-site, meaning a window/door replacement is not actually necessary. If fantastic lead times, a competitive price and a unique repair service is not enough for you, we can also offer; storage facilities for call-off orders, packaging/labelling to your requirements, technical support, product development, lamination training and consultancy services. Building a Beautiful Roof impact. TapcoSlate Classic has an authentic, rustic appearance, setting itself apart from other modern materials, but with all the advantages, and it is fully recyclable at the end of its lifespan. The product has also been passed for use on Grade II Listed buildings as an alternate to heavy natural slate on weakened timber.

Offering unmatched beauty and unsurpassed durability, Tapco Roofing Products provide unrivalled roofing solutions using slate and cedar textures. Through advanced materials and engineering, their products offer customers sustainability such as recycled content, long lifecycle, and extreme durability. At Tapco, innovation is key. From the industry leading 17-colour palette for TapcoSlate, to the 40-year warranty and the industry’s only compressionmoulded composite Cedar Shake tiles, innovation is how they arrive at superior quality. One if its most popular products, TapcoSlate Classic, adds splendour, elegance and tradition to your home, whether you have a modern house, modular home, conservatory or listed building. Being authentically shaped with textured surfaces and riven edges moulded from real slates makes TapcoSlate indistinguishable from natural slate - yet it has an even more refined appearance. It will not crack, break or delaminate, standing the test of time better than many natural slates. Its product formulation and manufacturing processes provide durability, performance, and longevity for many years to come. By providing a lightweight and easily-installed product, installation costs are lower, and less wasteful than those of natural slate. Because of its unique properties, TapcoSlate Classic is a perfect choice for building off-site/modular or manufactured homes as it can be easily transported in its finished state without breaking or warping, it is lightweight and can survive considerable surface

safely regardless of weather conditions. In addition to making construction sites safer, the hats can be used by joggers and dog walkers and anyone else who is out and about in the dark. All sizes are catered for, from the very small to the very large. Some of the different beanies include the runner-

friendly Shorty, a smaller hat that measures approximately 16cm (instead of the usual 19cm depth). The Slouchy offers a more laidback style, offering more light up material in the back. Based at the gateway to Snowdonia National Park in North Wales, GlowBeanie was launched in April

2014 by Jane Beachell, a one woman entrepreneur. An already unique company, GlowBeanie offers unique services in the form of custom made hats. They can tailor beanies according to customer requirements, resulting in a product that is wholly personable. Jane also attends various shows and craft fairs throughout the year and can be contacted online or via the phone.
