Brick & Tile Company of the Year

Over 80 Years of Brick Making Excellence

Peter Minter, owner and operator of Bulmer Brick & Tile recieving his Company of the Year award for his companies excellence within the Brick & Tile insustry

Building Solutions UK is extremely proud to present Bulmer Brick and Tile Company with its richly deserved Company of the Year award profile. Renowned experts in the field of brick making, the Bulmer Brick and Tile Company are a small, family run business specialising in the restoration and rejuvenation of buildings throughout the UK, both large and small. Owned and ran by brick making expert Peter Minter, the company’s story began back in 1936 when the Bulmer family bought a small brickyard near the Essex/ Suffolk border. Peter’s father, a builder by trade, was extremely experienced in manufacturing specialist bricks to restore buildings during the war and passed his legacy down to his family. Peter took over the company in 1974, making bespoke bricks to suit specific requirements. Today, Bulmer Brick and Tile continues to create bricks from the finest London

Clays. They are all handmade using traditional methods of making, drying and are fired in a coal burning, down draught kiln, providing a distinctive finish that blends seamlessly with the original work. “Having learned a great deal from my father all that time ago, I am highly experienced in the traditional methods of making bricks,” commented Peter. “These methods are combined with modern techniques to provide a truly spectacular result, one that creates bricks to fit in perfectly with the original brick work. “All our workers are highly skilled in more than one technique and dedicated to providing the highest level of customer service. Each and every project from large to small, from full restoration or extensions to one off bricks, is treated with the same care and attention, as we strive to meet the customers’ exact requirements.” Producing approximately, 300,000 bricks per year, the Bulmer Brick and Tile Company has the knowledge and ability to create a whole host of bricks from almost any century. Their wide range of facings and specials can be made with almost any texture, from coarse veined to smooth with some 150 different sizes of facing and a range of over 5000 special shapes,

including all standard plinths, squints and copings, and extends to purpose made chimney bricks, terracotta, mullions, jambs, floor bricks, pamments, decorative plaques, garden edgings and a full range of rubbing blocks. Their renowned expertise have been showcased in many large projects for the National Trust, English Heritage and Historic Royal Palaces, as well as small private work undertaken by individuals. “At Bulmer Brick and Tile Company we put the building first and strive to provide a seamless repair or stunning restoration,” Peter continued. “We discuss everything with the client prior to any work being started and provide professional advice and guidance throughout the process. We never take cheap short cuts and

ensure we work within specific budgets at competitive prices, offering great value for money. “We are constantly evolving to suit the needs of our customers. There will always be a need for restoration work as there are so many beautiful, historic buildings around the UK. We have worked on thousands of buildings over the years, some of which feel like part of the family! Our knowledge and expertise are second to none and, as well as bricks, we can provide paints, brick dust and anything else the customer requires. Commitment to Excellence

Passion to Deliver the Unexpected

Building Solutions UK is extremely pleased to announce that SolteQ has been awarded with the most deserved Commitment to Excellence award for their innovative energy roofs and dedication to energy self-sufficiency. With over thirty rich years of experience in development and production, SolteQ is constantly pushing the boundaries of environmentally friendly energy production, whether it be in the photovoltaic, solar thermal or wind power sectors. One of their most cutting edge products is their Photovoltaic (BIPV) energy roofs, which are aptly known as the ‘roof of the future.’ This stylish roof is a cutting-edge PV system that is more than capable of generating enough power to meet the energy needs of the average household, producing 173Wp/m². The SolteQQuad40 tiles, now available in the UK, are great looking and incorporate highly efficient monocrystalline or

4

polycrystalline PV cells in their construction. They are both lightweight – just a mere 14kg/m² – and sturdy, and, as well as being able to produce electricity, also act as a heat source. This heat source can be utilised for both household heating and domestic water heating when used in conjunction with an appropriate heat pump system. As well as being highly energy efficient, the roof of the future has a self-cleaning effect and also comes in a variety of colours, with the tiles capable of being laid in either the classic style or a fish scale design. They can be used in new build projects or building renovations and are even storm resistant, UV proof and weather proof. On top of that, the roofs can include overheat protection and include an emergency cut out device and incorporate prismatic safety glass and anti-reflexion technology.

maximum electricity production. They are proven to be 36% more efficient than traditional PV roofs. A 100% quality controlled system, this roof has an expected lifespan of over 50 years. The roof isn’t just limited to electricity and heat energy transformation, but also water usage if used in conjunction with an air/ water heat exchanger. As such, if used to its full extent, then electricity, heat and water bills all become obsolete with SolteQ’s energy roof. It gives customers the opportunity to become completely energy self-sufficient and have control over their energy costs as opposed to relying on the grid and paying ever fluctuating energy bills.

This groundbreaking and highly innovative roof can be used for more than just the average homeowner. Thanks to the SolteQ Quad roof tiles unique resemblance to rustic slate roofing, they also make the perfect addition to historic and monumental buildings. SolteQ, however, does much more than just roofs. It also has a line of products for personal safety and anti-theft purposes. In keeping with their commitment to clean energy,

they also have products designed to produce fresh water utilising wind energy, another low cost yet highly efficient system. For more information, contact SolteQ on +44 (0)1900 822188 or visit the website at www.solteq.uk

Deep Hole Drilling News

Deep hole flexibility

Manufacturer of deep hole drilling systems and technologies Unisig, has engineered its new B700 Drop Bed machine to effectively generate the critical, high precision features on large and irregularly shaped aerospace components. The B700 offers an expansive working range with its servo programmable workpiece headstock capability, yet it sports a streamlined overall footprint that makes for space-saving installations and enhanced ergonomics. Unisig claims this unlike other comparable deep hole drilling machines that are often inflexible dedicated systems as well as oversized and cumbersome.

A 1,600mm swing over bed size along with the programmable moving headstock allow the B700 to process parts as long as 4,000mm or as short as 500mm. In addition to high precision deep hole drilling, the machine’s operational capabilities include other complex deep hole machining operations necessary in the production of other aerospace parts such as axles, beams, control rods and components for actuators. These include capabilities such as internal contouring via an optional servo bottle boring axis. For performance and excellent process control, the B700 packs a preloaded drive system together with high horsepower and precisely controlled in-process feedback system for real-time monitoring. With a 85/94kW (126hp) tool spindle and 58/67kW (90hp) work spindle, the machine productively solid bores up to 200mm diameters and counterbores to 300mm diameters. Another productivity enhancing feature is a 950 l/minute coolant flow for efficient heat reduction, efficient chip evacuation and good surface finish quality. T +49 (0)7125 9687590 www.unisig.de

Deep Hole Drilling Machines, Gun Drilling Machines, Skiving Machines, Durable Tooling, Automation & Engineeering UNISIG deep hole drilling systems consist of machines, durable tooling, and automation, and are designed to meet the highest performance standards possible. Products are engineered and manufactured in the USA using metric hardware, and include the integration of premium components such as FAG, INA, Parker, Rexroth, Rohm, Schunk, SKF, Wittenstein alpha and ZF. Products are designed following all applicable ISO, DIN and IEC standards, and are exported worldwide. UNISIG deep hole drilling machines are proven with industry leading manufacturers in all regions of the world. UNISIG is chosen for the ability to consistently meet vital demands of tolerance.

70% of builders report material price hikes, warns FMB 70% of UK builders have seen an increase in material prices due to the depreciation of the pound, new research from the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has revealed. Sarah McMonagle, Director of External Affairs at the FMB, said: “Thousands of smaller building firms are grappling with the rising cost of materials caused by the depreciation of sterling since the EU referendum. More than 70% of smaller building firms have experienced increased costs as a result of the weakened currency, with additional increases of 10 to 15% expected as the new year unfolds. Anecdotally, construction SMEs are already reporting an

increase of 22% in Spanish slate and 20% increase in timber. A

quarter of all materials used by the UK construction industry are imported – this is significant and underlines the vulnerability of the industry to sudden fluctuations in the strength of our currency. The combined pressure of higher material prices and the rising cost of skilled labour represents a serious challenge to builders.” McMonagle concluded, “What this means is that home owners could start to see the cost of their building projects increase. It also means that consumer choice may be reduced as some home owners face having to compromise on aspects of their project due to the fact that certain materials have become too expensive. There is

also an added headache for the builder, as material price rises can come at short notice and if they are mid-project, the original costing is no longer accurate. This makes pricing jobs problematic and leads to construction SMEs having to cover themselves against sudden price swings. Some builders are attempting to mitigate this by introducing larger contingency funds when pricing for a job, or by stipulating in the contract that the overall contract price will change in the case of material price hikes, making client budgeting more tricky.” The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) is the largest trade association in the UK construction

industry representing thousands of firms in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Established in 1941 to protect the interests of small and medium-sized (SME) construction firms, the FMB is independent and non-profit making, lobbying for members’ interests at both the national and local level. The FMB is a source of knowledge, professional advice and support for its members, providing a range of modern and relevant business building services to help them succeed. Road Reclamation Services Are you fed up of putting expensive stone into potholes, only to find it wash straight out again as soon as it rains? There is now an answer to this problem. Simply, by recycling your old road. If your old and tired drive is in need of attention then this is the place to start. A poor roadway in to your property can cause you expense to your car by giving your suspension a hard time, which on today’s modern cars can lead to bills in the £0000’s!!! So, why not put it right before it gets to that stage. By loosening the surface we eradicate the base and surrounds of the pot holes, so the crushed material is to the same consistency helping to give your old road a new life. In 2002 MP & KM Golding bought a new concept of track maintenance to the UK. Established to eradicate the growing problem of expensive stone being washed away from potholes in the rain, the company came up with the idea of recycling your old road.

Construction, Advice and Project Management Building Solutions UK is incredibly pleased to present Self-Build Assistance (SBA) Ltd with its prestigious Products & Services Innovation Award 2016. The company, which has excellent transport links from its strategically placed base in Holborn in central London, was established in January 2013 by entrepreneurial founder and The Institute of Chartered Builders member David Jardine-Wilkinson. With his 20 years of experience working within the construction sector – taking on Senior Project Management roles as well as operating as a Senior PM on Construction sites – David had the knowledge and expertise required to create his own successful start-up. His main aim was to create an organisation that would assist individual clients by means of an honest and professional construction and selfbuild consultancy service. Providing guidance for both small and large projects, SBA is an ethically-driven enterprise striving to deliver quality results at cost-competitive prices. Covering everything from loft conversions and conservatories to extensions and full-builds, the team are knowledgeable of all associated aspects (such as planning ins and outs and legalities). “We started mainly as a project management service and have ended up taking on the role of main contractor on many jobs,” David explained. “We bring a large company mentality to the individual householder and try and provide high standards at affordable rates. We take on subcontractors to carry out the works and put in place our project management tools to control the quality and budget of each scheme.

Understanding the importance of allowing the client to maintain full control over the decision-making, SBA enforces a customeroriented approach from the initial discussion right up until the final construction phase. SBA’s workforce of dedicated experts are happy to negotiate on the client’s behalf and provide specialist budgeting and staged payments advice specifically tailored to their application. Where necessary, SBA provides a small works contract to ensure protection for both parties.

“We carry out construction the only way it should be carried out: properly,” David concluded. “When required we consult with the architect and structural engineer on a particular job and we also use a temporary works engineer when required to deal with any complex propping works or scaffold design. What we bring is a fresh attitude to the private sector of construction. “Overall SBA has slowly grown since its establishment and the growth will continue over the next few years. It’s important not to expand too quickly so we can keep producing the quality that our customers have got used to – we have gathered a steady stream of clients, some through word of mouth and some through the shows we attend. We have exhibited at the Housebuilding and Renovation Show who showcase in both Birmingham and London and we are currently considering doing the Build-It live Shows as well.” Regardless of your position – whether you are undertaking a significant home extension or overseeing a new build project, for example – SBA is the organisation you need to contact for all of your construction project management requirements. All schemes are finalised with the desired quality, within budget and with minimum stress on the client’s part, so you can rest assured that all aspects of your project will be conducted proficiently. “We pride ourselves on being transparent when pricing a job; we give the potential client a breakdown of the works as well a segregated list of costings with inclusions of all works along with a programme following an agreed start date. A lot of companies will just give the client an overall price without any breakdown or explanation on how they have arrived at their figures.”

This comes complete with an agreed staged payment policy, which is typically tied in with a full inspection of the latest works, conducted by the local Building Control officer and/or the client. Although operating predominantly within the construction market, the company has also set up its own separate maintenance division in order to extend its offering to include main contractor works for the more specialised enquiries.
