An annual Location survey or ‘spot check’ for Partial Discharge (PD) while in service and under normal operating conditions is recognised as a cost effective method to assess the ongoing health of your HV Switchgear, with the financial savings from avoiding a single outage easily offset by the OPEX spend, not to mention other regulatory incentives. Environmental Factors To roll-out a network wide inspection program, a period of 7 days per site is often sufficient to confirm the presence of erratic activity, itself often dependent on environmental factors such as Temperature, Humidity and Voltage variations as a result of changes in the Loading. Frequently, PD will begin life in this way before the inevitable insulation deterioration increases its severity, and ability to remain active for longer periods eventually manifesting into an avoidable incident. Commitment to Excellence

Your perfect climate Best Practice is keen to inform its readers that Munters has been selected as a company most deserving of its prestigious Commitment to Excellence profile. In 1955 the organisation’s founder, Carl Munters, set out to achieve a certain goal: to create ‘the perfect climate’ with the formation of an enterprise focused on the provision of effective and energy efficient air treatment solutions. In the six decades that followed significant levels of growth and success ensued, enabling Munters to become an industry leader recognised across the world for its specialist capabilities. Facilitating the needs of customers in an impressive 30 countries, the dedicated solutions provider has essentially been striving to enhance the future of our climate whilst defining environmental impacts over the generations. Its hard-working and driven team, which comprises more than 3,000 employees, has the knowledge and experience needed to ably assist clients working within various sectors (the pharmaceutical, food, electronics, preservation, utility and construction markets included). The sales and manufacturing services available are wholly supported by the winning combination of state-of-the-art technologies and the competence of seasoned engineering experts. The company has been separated into four key business areas. The first focuses on industrial process and comfort climate application solutions as the dedicated air treatment division, whilst the second, AgHort, remains centred on the optimisation of indoor climates for the purpose of plant cultivation and livestock breeding. HumiCool, meanwhile, is a mobile system made for commercial buildings and industry, and Mist Elimination is the final strand, which also aims to assist those working amidst the industrial marketplace. The scope of its activities and proficiencies has led to Munters becoming an international frontrunner in the field of cost-effective air treatment and dehumidification. Its exceptional suite of solutions has been recognised by many for their usefulness, particularly in relation to the results achieved for energy performance, comfort, quality and customer productivity.

innovations is its award-winning desiccant dehumidifier IceDry™, which has proven invaluable in a number of environments. Strategically developed for usage in cold stores, this intelligent system can effectively resolve commonly occurring problems triggered by the arrival of ice, frost, snow and condensation, and so has been a popular purchase for organisations of different natures. Another exciting addition is the Oasis™ IEC Indirect Evaporative Cooler, which is utilised for data centre cooling. This product, which is widely considered a superior alternative to the more typically employed free cooling techniques, works to eliminate contamination from mixed air streams. This, along with the ability to provide an impressively low PUE, makes the Oasis™ IEC the most favourable option for cooling data centre facilities. Close control systems like the MX2 Plus, MDU and ML Plus are acknowledged for focusing on humidity and temperature control. The units are capable of delivering between 180m3/hr to 100,000 m3/hr of air and are ideally suited to sensitive food, chemical and pharmaceutical processes and preservation applications due to their ability to create an optimal climate throughout the year. Please get in touch with Munters today if you wish to make an enquiry or find out more about any of the products available. The website provided will enable you to access a wide range of resources - case studies, apps, videos and guides – should you require further information, insight or guidance. trucks. The new Union rapid roll doors will drastically reduce the downtime that Lidl experienced with the previous doors, which was caused by excessive lead times for parts and repair.

Union Industries, the Great British manufacturer, has been working overtime to complete a series of installations for the German discounter, Lidl UK, which will help transform operations at one of the grocer’s largest multitemperature warehouses. Lidl, a long-standing client of Union Industries, has invested in four new high speed doors for its Kent-based site that will facilitate significant efficiency gains. Three Ramdoors and one Bulldoor have been used to replace four existing doors at the warehouse which were supplied by one of Union’s competitors when the distribution centre was built in 2014. The original doors frequently required costly new parts, mainly as a result of impact damage by forklift & ride-on ped

Union Industries’ doors have an excellent reputation in retail distribution for very high traffic use openings between various temperature controlled zones. The robust construction of the doors, coupled with Union’s ability to deliver exceptional after-sales service has been key to its success in securing contracts with multinational companies such as Lidl. Stacy Copley, Head of Logistics for Lidl UK in Northfleet, said: “We previously had to pay for regular call-outs, repairs, parts and maintenance of the doors we used, but since we invested in Union’s high quality doors with their brilliant warranty scheme, these problems have gone away.” Contact T +44 (0)113 2448393 www.unionindustries.co.uk

Vacuum Solutions News Consistent further development of Mink claw vacuum technology Busch has continued to consistently develop its Mink claw vacuum technology and now launched the new Mink MV claw vacuum pump series. The Mink MV is a further development of the tried and tested Mink MM series, which has proven itself as the standard in many industrial sectors. With the new Mink MV series, Busch has succeeded in developing claw vacuum pumps that have a significantly lower noise level than comparable pumps on the market. Furthermore, they are extremely compact and efficient. The new series operates in the same way as the previous series, i.e. according to the dry and non-contact claw principle. Therefore no operating fluid is required in the compression chamber, which means that all associated maintenance work, such as oil and filter changes, is eliminated. There is no wear thanks to the non-contact operation and therefore no wearing parts need to be replaced.

vacuum pumps and are therefore able to operate with a lower level of motor performance compared to other vacuum pumps of the same size. All Mink MV claw vacuum pumps are equipped with electric motors that comply with the latest energy efficiency classes as standard, thus achieving the best energy balance. Further energy savings are possible through frequencycontrolled motors (optional), which operate according to demand. It is therefore possible to adjust the output via the speed to meet actual needs. Busch is offering the new Mink MV series in pumping speed sizes between 300 and 1200 cubic metres per hour. The ultimate pressures are 150 and 200 millibar depending on the size. www.buschvacuum.com

UltraTEV™ family prevents catastrophic failure during routine testing at Port of Felixstowe Client - Port of Felixstowe The Port of Felixstowe is the busiest container shipping port in the UK dealing with 44% of Britain’s containerised trade. The Port of Felixstowe have 10 TM UltraTEV Plus units which they use for substation entry and routine inspection.

Background During routine testing Port of Felixstowe identified two instances of Partial Discharge (PD) using the UltraTEV handheld. Area 1 detection - During routine testing PD activity was identified on an 11kV RMU that had been in services since 2005. Area 2 detection - After a planned upgrade of an 11kV substation, PD testing was carried out and revealed activity on one of the RMU Fault Making Switches.

Investigation Area 1 detection - Investigation revealed the one phase termination had considerable PD activity damage and required re-termination. There was also interaction between cores. The cause was poor connections and the cable core spacing being insufficient. Area 2 detection - Investigation revealed the air gap between two phases was insufficient causing interaction between them. This was identified using the UltraTEV’s Ultrasonic mode with headphones.

Impact on business Area 1 detection - If this had been left to the point of failure there would have been disruption to the ports core operation. Area 2 detection - If this had been left to the point of failure it would have resulted in a delay to the future development of this operational area.

Electricity North West is a distribution network operator that owns, operates and maintains the North West’s electricity network, connecting 2.4 million properties and more than 5 million people to the National Grid.

Challenge ENWL carried out a two year evaluation of EA Technology’s CableData Collector™ (CDC) and CableData Analysis™ Software (CDAS). This evaluation involved the online condition assessment of 191 33kV medium voltage (MV) cables on their network. ENWL did their own analysis using the CDAS software. As this was an evaluation trial, ENWL chose not to perform any remedial action on the cables tested, but instead to wait and see what happened to the cable’s performance.

Over the same two year period a number of the cables failed as predicted with the CDC. The chart above shows how many of the cables have faulted since testing in each of the three green, amber, and red categories and is clearly demonstrating the ability of the CDC to assess the condition of the cables in relation to their likelihood of failure.

Benefits ENWL now intend to incorporate CDC testing into their outage planning procedure. Any long-term 33kV planned outages will include a pre-outage check on the adjacent circuits which will be carrying all the load during the outage.

The chart below shows the results of the testing that was conducted over the first 18 months of the two year evaluation period. The results are broken down into three categories: Green - a test where no Partial Discharge (PD) was found. Cable does not need to be tested for another two years. Amber - some levels of PD were detected. Cable should be retested in 6 months’ time to see if the levels have increased. Red - PD levels indicate significant degradation. The cable should be taken out of service for repair or replacement.

Analytix launches new PYRO advanced muffle furnace The all-new Milestone PYRO from Analytix is the most versatile and advanced muffle furnace yet and is a highly-efficient alternative to conventional muffle furnaces dramatically reducing ashing times from hours to minutes using microwave enhanced heating providing time savings up to 95%. System flexibility allows four configurations: ultrafast heating, high sample throughput, large scale, and sulphated ashing.

provides high throughput with 24 samples handled simultaneously. The ultrafast heating option heats to 1,000°C in 8 minutes and is ideal when a fast result is required. Both systems can be used in conjunction with Milestone UltraFAST crucibles that provide instant cooling of the crucible after the ashing process is complete so a separate desiccator is not required. In addition, all crucible types can be used – metal, porcelain, and quartz fibre.

The system offers a huge range of potential applications, such as ashing, sulphated ashing, loss on ignition (LOI), dietary fibres, fusion, sintering, and all high-temperature reactions under controlled conditions. Safe sample preparation is ensured by removal of all odours and corrosive fumes through an integral exhaust whilst providing more comfortable working conditions by minimising heat loss and transfer to the laboratory.

The sulphated ashing option enables analysts to add sulphuric acid to samples and place crucibles directly into the microwave muffle furnace without the need for the preliminary charring step. Sulphuric acid fumes released from crucibles during the sulphated ashing process are continuously removed and neutralised by the system.

of corrosion protection and outstanding wear resistance – even under the most extreme conditions of use.

Spring plungers are a universal tool used in many industries and applications including medical engineering, food technology and hygienic environments as well as in outdoor areas. These present challenging environmental requirements for the usual standard materials such as steel, stainless 303/4, however, Wixroyd has the spring plunger to take them on. Wixroyd’s new corrosion resistant spring plunger range 32102 are a standardised solution to these environmental challenges. What’s more is they provide reduced prices and lead times compared to developing a bespoke solution. The spring plunger is formed of a sleeve composed of passivated A4 steel (1.4404), while the springs and the ball consist of passivated steel (1.4568) and ceramic (Si3N4), respectively. This selection of materials provides a high degree

Featuring a distinctive black colour, the ball offers additional advantages such as being harder than most usual standard parts, it’s impactresistant, electrically insulating and non-magnetic Normally our spring plungers tested specifically for spring deflection and elastic force whereas our new corrosion resistant spring plungers are subjected to weather resistance testing as well. Salt spray test: The spring plungers withstood the salt spray test without any difficulty for 96 hours. Cold tests revealed: The spring plungers do not freeze up and remain fully operational even in temperatures below freezing. Temperature Test: spring plungers are suitable for use in the upper temperature range up to 250°C. +44 (0)845 2666577 info@wixroyd.com

Commitment to Excellence

Competitive renewable energies Here at Best Practice we pride ourselves on promoting businesses of the highest calibre operating within a number of important industry sectors, bringing you the most recent news, services and solutions shaping the engineering, manufacturing, processing, control, industrial, environmental and packaging sectors. We are therefore delighted to present Spanner RE² GMBH with our duly deserved Commitment to Excellence profile and tell you more about the organisation’s history as well as its latest successes, innovations and future plans. The business has roots dating back 50 years with the formation of its parent company Otto Spanner GmbH. With the

swift progression of the German brand it became logical to expand, particularly as the group noticed a gap in the market for pellet boilers, and so Spanner RE² GMBH was established in 2004. Founded by Helmut Spanner and Thomas Bleul, the enterprise was set up with a distinct purpose: to provide customers with a specialised service focused specifically on renewable energy and the production of exceptional Biomass CHP’s for those with a high heat demand. Essentially making use of residual wood, Spanner RE² GMBH had taken the necessary steps to achieve greater independence from the automotive industry (with Otto Spanner GmbH being

best known for servicing many major motorised brands such as BMW, Porsche and AEG as well as the metal working industry). In 2006, after liaisons with the inventor of wood gasification units, the team began immersed in this field and subsequently sold their first machine in 2008. The company has succeeded to go from strength to strength and has since delivered over 550 units to date, delivering its exceptional service and quality level of in-house training to customers all over the globe. With its dedicated wood cogeneration plant Spanner RE² GMBH can continue with its production processes whilst remaining fruitfully innovative and operationally efficient. The aforementioned Biomass CHP System is an intelligent machine strategically developed to convert wood chips into biomass electricity and warmth with unsurpassed confidence and ease. As well as being a cost-effective way of accessing renewable energy, this particular product also has the proficiency to increase power yields (dependant on location and legal conditions). Meanwhile, the HV30-V1.1 and HV45-V1.1 innovations are newly developed compact wood cogeneration systems that usefully provide clients with the opportunity to fit the heat-carrying component (covered with a resistant coating) in rooms with a minimum standard ceiling height of 2.50m. Performance sizes of 30 kWel or 45 kWel have proven popular with hundreds of organisations; namely agriculture and forestry businesses, hotels, restaurants and heat grids in Europe, Asia and North America. These customers have appreciated the appropriateness of these set dimensions and the power obtained with biomass electricity and warmth from wood gasifier as well as the way in which several systems could be effortlessly combined. The overall mission of Spanner RE² GMBH is to develop and commercially promote unique and economically appealing regenerative power generation technologies of a high standard. As one of the most longstanding manufacturers of its kind engineering and producing systems from its facility in Germany, the group has attained a solid reputation as a respectable supplier that unlike many of its competitors doesn’t rely upon the work of resellers, yet has managed to build itself a substantial and internationally diverse customer base. This means that in essence, clients can purchase solutions direct from the manufacturer and can trust in the quality control procedure undergone – especially since every product has achieved “advanced gasification” classification by

OFGEM in UK. The company has recently launched its latest addition to the portfolio; EnergyBlock, which is entirely original when compared to what is currently available within the marketplace. The customisable and coordinated system, which comprises a wood gasification unit, cogeneration unit and intelligent control centre, is perfect for heat and electricity generation and has been recognised for its fast start-up, variable set-up possibilities, compactness and capability to be fired with wood chips, pellets and briquettes. In terms of future plans Spanner RE² GMBH is looking to continually increase brand recognition across the UK whilst developing its services in Ireland. Attendance at industry-related trade events such as the LAMMA Show, EnergyNow, All Energy, Pic & Poultry and the Royal Highland Show has boosted the company’s profile significantly and the team are now looking forward to maximising interest even further whilst promoting the core advantages of their environmentally friendly and notably advanced renewable energy enhancing systems.

Pumps & Valves News SEEPEX pumps reduce operating costs for Thames Water Thames Water is the UK’s largest water and sewage treatment company, providing wastewater services to 15 million customers. SEEPEX progressive cavity pumps (PCPs) have delivered process improvements at their Reading STW by replacing piston pumps to reduce operating costs and onward sludge transport costs. The pumps transfer de-watered digested sludge to storage silos before final disposal. Thames engineers identified a large saving in disposal costs if they could increase the ds content of the dewatered sludge to 25%; however they needed reliable pumps to transfer the dewatered sludge over 80metres, with a static head of 30m, without increasing system costs. The existing piston pumps had frequent maintenance requirements and generated high operating pressures as well as using 31KW of power – adding up to a high cost of ownership for Thames Water.

reduced power consumption (15KW compared to 31KW) and up to 75% reduced discharge pressure due to the low pulsation flow characteristics. SEEPEX PCPs have been installed for over 12 months, requiring no maintenance interventions in this time, and the system has delivered a hat-trick of cost reductions: lower sludge disposal costs, lower energy use and reduced maintenance costs. New product launch from SEEPEX The flow rate, once set, is monitored and controlled entirely by the pump drive which adapts to variations in operating conditions to ensure accurate repeatable dosing of even the most viscous products. Dry running and over pressure sensors feedback to the drive and protect the pump from damage. In 2016 we have improved our dosing pump offering with the launch of a Smart Dosing Pump (SDP). This comprises a progressive cavity (PC) pump with an intelligent drive and controls. Users only need to input the proportional flow ratio and the pump monitors and adjusts automatically. Operation is simple; the SDP has an intelligent inverter drive which is programmed either locally via an HMI or centrally via a fieldbus interface. The SDP can also be controlled via analogue/digital I/Os either locally or remotely by a PLC.

Flow Control News

The Smart Dosing Pump delivers all of the benefits of PC pumps with added control options; they are available on pre-wired skids, instantly ready for installation and integration within central systems. The accuracy of both batch and continuous flow is ensured, saving money on chemical use, and the efficient operation of the pump ensures the lowest life-cycle costs are incurred. Partners in precision

When it comes to the provision of quality metrology instruments, the Bowers Group is a company you should seriously consider reaching out to. With its richly diverse portfolio – which is split into a number of dedicated divisions – the organisation is well placed to assist clients looking to develop various products of an exceptional calibre. Appreciating that customers have high expectations, the team strive to respond to

the demanding specification criteria presented and offer suitable processes which ensure that all compounds, substrates, components and products are fit for purpose. The allencompassing offering therefore extends to solutions within the following categories: calibration tools, height gauges/hand tools, material testing, vision and optical and surface finish contour & roundness. The company is best known for its involvement within the metrology-based product and service arena and is traditionally associated with the development of bore gauges. Even the most challenging of measurements can be facilitated courtesy of the Bower Group’s solid supplier network, which consists of many important

industry-related brands (including Trimos, Sylvac, Wyler, Innovatest Gagemaker and Accretech), and calibration and technical support is provided as well as manufacturing excellence for added customer confidence. The solutions and services available from the Bowers Group have proven to be most effective within several industries and environments. A particularly notable example includes the application of its XTL Digital Lever Bore Gauge employed by the Mollart Engineering group of companies; otherwise known as an internationally acclaimed pioneer of deep hole drilling machine tools. Mollart operates predominantly within the aerospace, defence, automotive, oil & gas, subsea, mould & die, nuclear, medical, semiconductor and telecommunications markets and was in need of a product that could enhance the efficiency of its hydraulic manifold manufacturing process. They subsequently invested in a Bowers XTL digital lever bore gauge that was integrated to accurately measure Inconel 718 hydraulic manifolds used at extremely high pressures of 20,000psi. With the XTL gauge, which is suitable vertical bore measurement, the team at Mollart could produce clear dimensions in line with strict size and surface finish tolerances. In addition, the 3-point spherical head incorporated eliminated the problems associated with the old bore comparator, which left unsightly and costly scratches that contravened the surface requirement finish. Another case study comes with the effective purchase of a Baty Profile Projector which was chosen by Reverie Ltd as a way to vastly improve the machining and inspection of autoclaved composite parts. The Essex-based design, repair and manufacturing specialist selected the R14 FT2-E variety not only for its high accuracy non-contact inspection capability but also for its strength in checking CNC tool cutter diameters and wear. The projector was utilised specifically for the measurement of key fob trims for a British automotive maker of luxury sports cars and the

development of CFRP trims; a new prototype part currently in production for a high-end male grooming company. It was the favoured option for its ability to measure difficult components and has since been recognised for its added benefit of validating any client returns for fit errors. Because of the quality and accuracy assurances provided Reverie have also saved significant amounts of money – the results obtained prove that the finished components are of the correct tolerance pre-established by the customer and so rejections are prevented. The project at the Engineering and Technology Department at Milton Keynes College, meanwhile, involved the incorporation of a Bowers Hardness Tester perfect for introductory usage. Situated in Leadenhall, the educational establishment wanted to provide students with a practical means of understanding the hardness testing method and so opted for the CV-700 INNOVATEST. Now the multimillion pound centre of innovation and technology can better equip learners studying mechanical, electronic, computer-aided design or fabrication, who can successfully conduct Rockwell, Brinell and Vickers hardness testing on a variety of metallic materials using the machinery whilst finding out more about the all-important decision-making process. Securing Confidential Documents whilst on the move

Initially working with Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, the company designed a solution that suited their specific needs. The hospital desired a unit that did not need a key to be locked, was fairly priced and also was better for spinal health. From there, Pro-Stak designed its first hospital unit which included an electronic combination lock and required only vertical lifting, so as to reduce back strain for staff. This led the way to creating the new, outstanding range of Static Use Units and Compact Mobile Trolleys for Medical Ward rounds at competitive prices, which are now used in many hospitals around the UK.

To cater for the needs of NHS hospitals, requiring a secure and convenient way to store confidential and important documents, Pro-Stak Tidy Storage Solutions was established in 2009 as a subsidiary of Pro-Stak – one of the UK’s leading providers of Compact Storage Solutions and Document Management.

Made in the UK, all products are equipped with a secure electronic locking system which eliminates the risk of lost keys, and panics when the unit can’t be opened. They are manufactured from quality Melamine faced board with 2mm PVC edging, meaning they are robust, easy to clean, and offer a modern appearance. Deep hole flexibility Manufacturer of deep hole drilling systems and technologies Unisig, has engineered its new B700 Drop Bed machine to effectively generate the critical, high precision features on large and irregularly shaped aerospace components such as landing gear struts. Conversely, the inherent flexibility of the new machine allows it to also process medium sized, more uniform shaped workpieces with minimal changeover time from one to another. The B700 offers an expansive working range with its servo programmable workpiece headstock capability, yet it sports a streamlined overall footprint that makes for space-saving installations and enhanced ergonomics. Unisig claims this unlike other comparable deep hole drilling machines that are often inflexible dedicated systems as well as oversized and cumbersome. A 1,600mm swing over bed size along with the programmable moving headstock allow the B700 to process parts as long as 4,000mm or as short as 500mm. In addition to high precision deep hole drilling, the machine’s operational capabilities include other complex deep hole machining operations necessary in the production of other aerospace parts such as axles, beams, control rods and components for actuators. These include capabilities such as internal contouring via an optional servo bottle boring axis. For performance and excellent process control, the

B700 packs a preloaded drive system together with high horsepower and precisely controlled inprocess feedback system for realtime monitoring. With a 85/94kW (126hp) tool spindle and 58/67kW (90hp) work spindle, the machine productively solid bores up to 200mm diameters and counterbores to 300mm diameters. Another productivity enhancing feature is a 950 l/minute coolant flow for efficient heat reduction, efficient chip evacuation and good surface finish quality. The B700 machine expands Unisig’s extensive B-series line designed for on-centre drilling of cylindrical workpieces in applications such as aerospace, defence and oil and gas. In addition to standard BTA drilling methods, these machines are also capable of counterboring, trepanning and skiving and roller burnishing processes, achieving the extremely strict tolerances required by manufacturers in these and other industries. Though the taste of the liqueurs is the core of their success the stylish labels (a mixture of traditionally English design with an original twist) that the company uses on their products definitely help selling bottle for bottle. “Our inspiration came from English designer William Morris and the vibrant Czech art nouveau painter Alphonse Mucha,“ says Tiffinie, who knew of the potential of labels and launched the Bespoke Labelling

Service, offering personalised bottles of their delicious liqueurs with a name or special message on the label, great for anniversaries or special occasions. 85% of their orders require a personalised label, which the company produces on their own with the LX900e Color Label Printer by Primera Technology. While the fast print speeds and separate ink cartridges keep operating costs low, the main advantage is that labels can be printed when and where they are needed in just the quantities that are required at the moment. So there are literally no minimum order requirements, no plate or die charges or no obsolete label

UNISIG’s UNI-50BTA Allows Fast Changeover between Gundrilling and BTA UNISIG has added the new versatile, high-precision UNI-50BTA to its UNI series of deep hole drilling machines. The machine extends the production range by enabling operators to rapidly change from BTA to gundrill deep hole drilling tooling. This allows drilling holes with diameters as small as 8 mm (0.31”) and as large as 65 mm (2.56”), at depth-to-diameter hole ratios of 100:1 or greater. The UNI-50BTA makes it possible to drill with either tooling method within the diameter range in the same part without secondary operations. The UNI-50BTA features a revolutionary pressure head design that enables operators to make the tool change without dismantling the machine, reducing the time for changeover from several hours down to below 10 minutes. The machine further enhances productivity by combining elements from UNISIG’s other successful product

lines into one high-value machine. This provides flexibility in demanding high-production or high-precision applications such as aerospace landing gear actuators, helicopter main shafts and diesel engine and transmission components. The machine features high-accuracy feed and zero-endplay spindles for bottom-forming operations, counter rotation to minimize centerline drift and preloaded ballscrew drives for precise depth control. 262.252.3802 sales@unisig.com www.unisig.com

The British & Irish Association of Fastener Distributors The British & Irish Association of Fastener Distributors, otherwise known as the BIAFD, has roots dating back to the 1940s where it started out as a national association of bolt and nut stockists. Although it was originally established with the set purpose of balancing the post-war domination of British fastener manufacturers, the organisation had to adjust in response to industry developments and subsequently became a non-profit making company limited by guarantee in 2009. The BIAFD is a key representative acting in the best interests of leading UK

distributors and wholesalers of fasteners, fixings and related products. It therefore provides services and support to members of varying backgrounds and specialisms; professionals such as large fastener wholesalers, UK importers and small, family-owned businesses well-practiced in fastener manufacture, assembly, maintenance, construction and building. The trade body works in accordance with the government and other such institutions, boasting a strong network of associated distributors and manufacturers heavily involved with the major consumption and supply markets like the United States, Taiwan and China. If you would like any further information then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the organisation today. www.biafd.org

Clinching the deal

BTM (UK) Automation Products Ltd is a Bedfordshire-based company best known for its specialised BTM products and quality industry solutions. It is particularly regarded for its remarkable clinching technology - the organisation’s Automation Products Managing Director Mark Firmin was keen to tell us more about this reputable TOG-L-LOC sheet metal joining system. The high-speed mechanical cold forming technique is applied for the purpose

of joining sheet metal production components with ease. Instead of requiring additional fasteners this method uses inexpensive punch and die tooling to create leak-proof joints with a simple, singular press stroke. This means results can be obtained more efficiently than what is achievable with other practices, and since no welding material is utilised there are no supply or storage costs. With standard TOG-L-LOC (circular) tooling, BTM can competently join two sheets up to a maximum metal thickness of 8.0mm. Please feel free to get in touch to find out more. Total Waste & Recycling Solutions

Make Your Business

More Efficient

Leading luxury food supplier Harvey & Brockless were looking to improve operational efficiency, reduce waste disposal costs and turn their waste into money. ‘Our staff were spending at least two and half hours a day taking waste cardboard in bins to the compactor outside. We needed to find a better solution to our waste system’ says Warren Kruger, their Business Improvement Manager.

Euro Press Systems Ltd is based in the West Midlands but provides top quality machinery to the whole of the UK. We specialise in the supply, refurbishment, repair and service of power presses and sheet metal working machinery. We can also provide you with statutory reports and inspection reports for power presses and associated accessories. When it comes to machinery, we have you covered • HSG 236 thorough examinations • F2197 statutory press inspections • Scheduled and planned maintenance contracts • Overhaul and refurbishment of press equipment • In-house lifting facilities 7 tonne and 2 tonne • Sales of new and used power presses and associated machinery • Fast and efficient power press service • Free and friendly advice • Competitive pricing.

After meeting Compact & Bale at an exhibition Warren wanted to re-evaluate their waste management process so that the staff could spend more time on their core business and less time on waste handling. Prior to installation of the AutoLoadBaler, staff at the food manufacturer were filling a 35 yard portable compactor full of cardboard and general waste, going to landfill every week. Their operatives were making 15 ten minute journeys a day taking bins outside to the compactor.

Contact us on 01384 410000 Email: sales@europresssystems.co.uk | www.europresssystems.co.uk

After a waste review, Compact and Bale concluded that if Strautmann’s unique AutoLoadBaler was located within the factory, they could bale cardboard quickly and efficiently, reduce labour costs, generate income and divert resourceful

material away from landfill. The unique fully automated design allows operators to prioritise their work day in a more productive manner, allowing them to concentrate on their core business. The machine has been such a success that Harvey & Brockless are looking to replace their other standard vertical baler with a second AutoLoadBaler. Warren says, “The staff now have time to do other cleaning jobs rather than spending all their time walking to and from a compactor to fill it. The AutoLoadBaler works fantastically well in our business: it’s a great concept.” T +44 (0)1732 852244 info@compactandbale.com www.compact-and-bale.com
