Platform drainage at Historic York Railway Station The original York Railway Station was built within the City Walls, adjacent to where the current station now stands. Opened in 1839 by the North Midland Railway, the structure only served trains to and from the south and the northern coalfields. However by 1873, as more passenger and goods lines were built into York, a larger station, from which trains could gain access from all directions, was needed. Opening in 1877, the New York Station took three years to rebuild. Designed by the North Eastern

cross-route link between Glasgow, Manchester and Liverpool. The station currently copes with around 800 trains and thousands of passengers each week. With so many passengers using the station, the extended platforms, which project out from the original arched structure, are as busy as ever. The platform surfaces have been designed to gently slope inward away from the track so any surface water naturally drains towards their centre. Effective drainage of these roofed and un-roofed ‘outer’ areas was a major safety consideration.

Railway’s architect Thomas Prosser, the curved 800ft-long train-shed roof, supported by iron columns, arched 42ft above the platforms. The station was immediately hailed as one of the great buildings in Victorian era. At the time, it was the largest railway station in the world with four massive arches and thirteen platforms.

Hauraton RECYFIX® STANDARD 100 channels were chosen for the slightly curving platforms – see photographs. The 271 metres of channelling installed were made from the company’s tough recycled Polyethylene-Polypropylene (PE-PP), all fitted with Class C 250 ductile iron ‘heel-safe’ gratings finished in a Black anti-oxidisation coating. As each one metre unit only weighs just over 6kg, including the grating, contractor C. Spencer Limited was impressed with the ease and speed of installing the channels as all the units used easily complied with manual lifting regulations.

Today, the structure still impresses. Serving the busy East Coast mainline route, primarily between Glasgow Aberdeen, Edinburgh and London it is also a vital

Screed Flooring Company of the Year

Francis Flower: Leaders in Environmentally Conscious Mineral Sourcing A huge congratulations to Francis Flower, the renowned mineral resourcing company, for being the recipient of the prestigious Company of the Year Award. Francis Flower specialises in recovering, reclaiming and recycling mineral by-products from different industries. Now, excitement is buzzing again over Francis Flowers’ new product – the Gypsol screed flooring system, ‘Rustique.’ Gypsol is a multi-useful product which acts as a superior alternative to sand and cement screeds and polished concrete. Gypsol is favoured as the perfect supplement to underfloor heating thanks to its efficient installation, design versatility and the fact that most of it is made from recycled material. The soon to be available Rustique flooring creates the perfect ‘architectural’ finish and can be used anywhere, whether it is new builds, renovation, warehouses or even barn conversions. Better yet, this fast track flooring system has the potential to be installed and fully finished within just one month. The innovative Rustique flooring has been developed in conjunction with Sika UK, a leader in the building industry. As opposed to Francis Flower’s highly polished Diamond floor, a floor impregnated with hardeners, the Rustique is instead designed to provide a hard waring low maintenance floor, with the option of either exposed or semi-exposed aggregate.

(Gypsol), limestone powders, super-fine white marble, plastics, pharmaceuticals and GGBS. Today, Francis Flower is one of the leaders in mineral management, storage and processing as well as agricultural services. They have five bases around the UK, with two in Somerset and one in Cheshire, North Lincolnshire and Cambs. These strategic locations allow them to operate near major roads, rails and port networks.

In addition, customers can choose to have the floor lightly sanded or even heavily abraded according to their tastes, and the Rustique coat can be quickly and easily applied by any skilled applicator. As for Francis Flower, the company was created over sixty years ago and is a family-run business that still operates in their hands today. Whilst initially starting out as solely quarrying and lime burning, Francis Flower now provides a range of high quality powered minerals, including anhydrite binder

Some of their specialist services include granulating, pre and post drying and screening, product analysis, procurement and importation, storage systems and stock management, logistics and material recovery and reclamation. Their extensive services are utilised by everyone from architects, designers, main contractors, self-builders, flooring contractors and more. As an ethical and environmentally conscious company, Francis Flower takes great pride in the fact that their products originate from by-products from industrial products. This therefore eliminates the need for mineral extraction and landfill and is therefore a more sustainable and environmentally friendly operation. None of their virgin marble,

The well-established company also supplies water companies with specially prepared limestone powder in order to neutralise acid lakes, waterways and reservoirs. This helps protect and restore the eco-systems, allowing both plant and animals life to thrive. Furthermore, this award winning company uses state of the art software systems within their storage and logistic facilities, therefore enabling

The innovative software utilises the concept of generative design by allowing the user to explore different options on how to get to the desired place they want to get to from a design standpoint, while optimising the façade. In both the conceptual design environment and the project environment, FenestraPro Premium dynamically proposes alternatives based on user defined energy requirements. It is a unique application that operates within Revit as a modeless add-in, reading directly from the model and generating the design solution on the model. FenestraPro has recently released the Version 3.0 of its façade program; a premium package that was founded by specialist architects David Palmer and Simon Whelan. This innovation, which provides the design parameters just as its previous counterparts, enables users to make the most of realtime performance indicators demonstrating the impact of design decisions throughout.

for international optimisation (relating fundamentally to functionality and usability development). This can be effectively achieved by means of a graphically sound and navigationally simple solution incorporating technical inputs for the enhancement of thermal, solar and daylighting requirements of particular façades. The software is also advantageous in the respect that it can offer a comprehensive understanding of design features that will affect not only the performance of a building but also its energy consumption and occupant comfort.

In addition, the FenestraPro Premium for Revit Version 3.0 will pay closer attention to aspects such as curtain walling, glazing and shading, reading various devices and providing a dynamic analysis courtesy of the efficient web service already in place. The operator can also benefit from the software’s ability to create and resize windows via user input (although it may also be driven through FenestraPro Premium’s calculations). Heating, Ventilation & Air-Conditioning News

Cost-effective Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) An increase in new builds brings new legislation and a surge in the demand for heat recovery products as building efficiency is improved. Buildings are becoming more airtight and consequently less fresh air can circulate. Since all buildings need a source of fresh air, the need for a MVHR unit has become obvious. Diagram 1 shows how a simple mechanical ventilation with heat recovery system facilitates effective ventilation in a domestic unit. Homes, classrooms, offices, function rooms, whether domestic or commercial, can benefit from MVHR, improving climate control whilst promoting energy efficiency. Working alongside our customers, Axair Fans can supply quality components for domestic and commercial heat recovery systems. Many systems feature two fans as shown in diagram 2, one to take out stale air and one to bring in fresh air. The incoming and outgoing air stream

Saving the World from Mediocre Bar Stools! Ever since its foundation in 1999, Langs Quality Furniture has been fulfilling the demands of clients with its range of beautifully made, customisable bar stools. Operating by means of an online shopping portal, the contemporary and forward-thinking brand is the brainchild of founder Graeme Lang, who decided to address the gap in the market for premium quality breakfast bar stools.

New ceiling cassette improves installation, operation and efficiency

Venture Lighting Europe’s high performance industrial luminaires have been used to upgrade the lighting at two depots owned by vehicle maintenance and repair company, Marshall Fleet Solutions.

Mitsubishi Electric has launched a new 4-way blow ceiling cassette for its popular Mr Slim range with a model designed to ease installation, operation and control. The EA Series unit features a new square grille design and a host of new features and efficiency improvements. When combined with a Mr Slim Power or Standard Inverter unit, the new cassette offers some of the industry’s highest seasonal efficiencies and advanced control options, whilst also providing greater flexibility and ease of operation. “We have looked at almost every aspect of the new unit to deliver a cassette that complements interiors and increases comfort levels for occupants,” explains Graham Temple, Marketing Manager for the company’s range of Air Conditioning. “We have also found ways to

improve the unit to make installation more straightforward, and included ways of automating energy saving and easing maintenance.” The optional 3D i-See Senor gives optimal control over air conditioning by automatically sensing room occupancy and adjusting the airflow to suit. This also helps reduce energy wastage by automatically switching off the air conditioning when a room is empty. For further details on the new EA Series cassette, visit the company’s online document library at: http://library. mitsubishielectric.co.uk or call: +44 (0)1707 282880.

Sika Waterproof Roof Membrane Caps Shopping Centre’s Seasonal Showpiece Sika-Trocal helped save Christmas by supplying the durable, easy-to-apply waterproof roof system for a spectacular seasonal attraction. With the festive season fast approaching, KD Decoratives were the supplier to The Mall retail complex in Cribbs Causeway, Bristol, which required a new roof for the fairytale focal point of its alfresco ‘Winter Wonderland’ experience – a sparkling Santa’s castle. The sky blue, portable building replete with a 20ft turret has been installed at the Mall every Christmas for a number of years, but its existing roof had started to display signs of wear and tear. For retailers, the run-up to Christmas is their most profitable time of the year. It was essential, therefore, the Mall’s Winter Wonderland crowning glory was installed and fully-waterproofed as quickly and safely as possible in order to provide an additional draw for families and children. Flat roofing specialists, Single Ply Services, from Clevedon near Bristol, in conjunction with main contractors, KD Decoratives, specified SikaTrocal SGK as the solution – a rapid-apply, best-cost performance bonded membrane. The castle consists of six modules which were re-roofed during an off-site operation which also involved the installation of Sika-Trocal SGK membrane. The modules were then weathered together onsite at the Mall. Suitable for both new build and refurbishment applications, in both warm roof and cold roof construction, the membrane provided the age-resistant, weather-proof covering to the modules’ metal deck. With the roof installed, the castle was transferred to the shopping centre where it was craned into its position then weathered together – the Mall’s outdoor car park.

Venture Industrial Luminaires used to help Company Save Energy Over 50 of Venture’s 150W Highbay Professional luminaires were used across the two sites to upgrade the company’s lighting scheme from 400W Metal Halide lamps to help achieve the company’s aim to reduce its energy consumption. By replacing the lighting with Venture’s LED luminaires, Marshall Fleet Solutions are expected to receive over £7,000, approximately 66%, in annual energy cost savings, which also significantly reduces the carbon footprint of the two sites. Venture’s 150W Highbays were specified due to their competitive price and ability to meet the energy saving requirements that Marshall Fleet Solutions were aiming to achieve. Marshall Fleet Solutions has grown to become the UK’s largest independent commercial vehicle servicing companies and has 11 depots across the country, which are used for maintenance and servicing of its customers’ vehicles. The new lighting schemes across the two depots in Garforth and Salford, were designed and specified by Luminous Solutions Ltd, a key partner of Venture Lighting., and were installed by electrical contractors GWR Electrical & Data Comms Ltd, who are both also working to upgrade

the lighting to Venture’s LED luminaires across other sites owned by Marshall Fleet Solutions. The lighting schemes were designed by Luminous Solutions to 300 lux AVE which is in line with the latest BS EN 12464 regulations on the lighting of work places and the requirement for general vehicle servicing, repair and inspection. Since installing Venture’s LED Highbays, the lighting across the two depots has noticeably improved and now provides a bright white light to offer workers a better and clearer working environment. The Venture LED Highbay Professional luminaires also offer a significantly improved life of up to 50,000 hours which eliminates the need for regular lamp replacement and maintenance, which can be disruptive to operations when replacing or fixing. The enhanced lifetime of the luminaires also reduces the likelihood of lamp failure which may compromise the overall light levels across the depots.

Single Ply Services had four days off site to install a new warm roof weathered with Sika-Trocal SGK and then just one day on site to fully-seal the roof’s connecting joints to ensure its weather-tightness and readiness for Winter Wonderland’s grand opening. Robin Hambly, Small Works Manager at Single Ply Services, said, “We chose SikaTrocal SGK because it is quick and easy to apply. It is also extremely reliable, and as its job is to keep Father Christmas, his helpers and all his young visitors safe and dry during the festive period, the system’s durability was essential to its specification. We didn’t want to ruin anyone’s Christmas.” The fully-adhered Type SGK roofing membrane is approved by the British Board of Agrément (BBA) to have a life expectancy in excess of 35 years. It’s easy-to-apply properties ensured Winter Wonderland’s star attraction was completed in-line with the client’s strict deadline, whilst providing an aesthetically-pleasing finish to enhance the castle’s magical appeal for young visitors throughout the festive period. The luminaire comes with a 120° beam angle as standard and can be adapted using a range of reflector accessories to offer 60°, 70° and 90° angles depending on the light distribution required. Designed to replicate the classic highbay style, Venture’s Highbay Pro is IP65 rated with a robust aluminium casing, combined with cold forged heat sink technology to delivery excellent heat dissipation. Finished with a polycarbonate lens to make it suitable for the most demanding industrial applications. Contact T +44 (0)1923 692600 info@venturelighting.co.uk www.venturelightingeurope.com

The company can meet a

customer’s needs from a few kilograms of powder coating – for a special order – through to tonnes for a longterm contract. Among the industrial markets for powder coatings are: automotive, electrical/electronics, scaffolding/form work, general engineering and steel partitioning. Powder coatings are also extensively used on both commercial and domestic furniture and home appliance industries because of their toughness, hardness and corrosion resistance. Domestic and Commercial Ventilation A well-managed ventilation system helps avoid mould formation on walls and ensures that you and your family, friends or colleagues breathe cleaner, fresher air. Ventilation systems are increasingly being used in domestic and commercial spaces and are a great way to control and manage air quality indoors, reducing the accumulation of pollutants and trapped water vapour in the air. It is important that a house is properly ventilated to avoid excess moisture and increased condensation. Poor ventilation can potentially lead to mould, condensation, and in some cases breathing issues, rendering your property a potential health hazard. There are 3 popular types of ventilation technologies, Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery systems (MVHR), Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) and Mechanical Extract Ventilation (MEV). Each has their benefits and are suitable for use in different environments. MVHR – This ventilation system extracts the moisture and stale air out and replaces it with clean and fresh air, making sure you don’t lose heat in your home or commercial premise. PIV – This system allows entry of clean and filtered air at a continuous rate, which creates movement and dispersion of stale air. This system is ideal for homes and flats. MEV – These fans remove moisture from the air and prevent condensation, which improves

the quality of air. This can be installed in single rooms to meet minimum ventilation requirements. Commissioning ventilation and air-handling systems is a crucial aspect of the installation process and improper commissioning may result in erratic flow rates and rattling noises. The BPEC qualified engineers at ESS Ventilation are qualified to commission many models of ventilation units. Most products come with a 5 year warranty and you can take advantage of our servicing contracts to ensure that you get the full benefit of the warranty provisions. Our team is regularly trained in the latest technological developments and commissioning procedures. We will match your requirements with the unit specifications and ensure that it operates in a balanced manner as expected. www.essllp.co.uk

Nationwide Hygiene Group Tubosider – Innovation from the ground up – Defining the Market for 30 Years Nationwide Hygiene Group celebrated their 30-year milestone in 2016 with a proud feeling of a journey full of achievement. The Nationwide Hygiene business was first registered in November 1986, in Newcastle upon Tyne, at the premises of A&J Beverage and as the business expanded it moved in 1993 to a stand-alone head office in South London. As steady National account sales growth continued, the head office increased office space three times before finally relocating in 2007, to Chesterfield in Derbyshire where the company now employs 28 staff in support of a continually rising customer portfolio. Throughout their 30 years, Nationwide has seen steady sales growth across a range of market sectors, taking the group to a £166 million sales total for the end of 2015. This consistent growth was recently recognised by the London Stock Exchange, when Nationwide were acknowledged as one of the 1,000 UK SME Companies to Inspire Britain. The report and listing identifies the UK’s fastest-growing and most dynamic small and medium sized businesses (SMEs). In order to be included in the list, companies needed to show consistent revenue growth over a minimum of three years, whilst significantly outperforming their industry peers. The 30th Year has also seen Nationwide receive the Cleaning Products Company of the Year award from Building & Facilities News. A spokesman for Building & Facilities News said, “Nationwide Hygiene has the competency and expertise to satisfy the needs of large multi-national corporations as well as smaller, local companies. Its highly efficient and dependable services

Pietrapave goes National – Launching the Future of Paving

Health in the workplace: Securing your future

Bannister Hall, one of Britain’s leading landscaping suppliers, has launched an innovative new natural stone paving product – a bespoke system that is set to revolutionise urban, street and commercial design by combining innovation and versatility with rapid, simple and cost-effective installation.

Casella, the leading technology company for noise and dust monitoring features in a new programme by the CIOB in partnership with ITN productions called; ‘Masterminds of Construction.’ It is currently available to view here: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=nm2jJVFzfss. The programme features key industry interviews and news-style reports along with sponsored editorial profiles. In it, Casella demonstrates how their monitoring solutions are helping organisations adopt a new approach of ‘Treating Health like Safety’ and introducing this new perspective into the workplace.

The PietraPave range, already used extensively on a huge range of commercial and domestic projects worldwide, boasts the beauty and resilience of natural stone paving while also reducing installation time by up to 80% due to its pre-assembled custommade designs and revolutionary mat construction. PietraPave offers a real and desirable alternative to other paving solutions. These include the system’s bespoke capabilities, enabling intricate designs to be completed, speed of installation and

the quality and long-term performance of the materials. The range currently includes granite and porphyry and is delivered in numbered sections, negating the need for costly specialist installers. Cobbles, paving and bespoke patterns such as fans, circles or geometric designs complete the look on each bespoke project, enabling commercial designers to plan ahead for a speedy installation.

This speed of installation means that PietraPave is incredibly cost-effective when compared to conventional block paving – in most cases a quarter of the cost per fully laid square metre – which is incredible value for clients and contractors. Each mat is simply laid onto a prepared screed and compacted down to levels. Grouting is equally fussfree with the Nexus V75 resin-based compound which reduces cleaning in the short-term and maximises durability for customers in the long-term. PietraPave has already been used at large urban public projects around the world including award-winning developments in Asia, the Middle East and the USA and for clients such as the Disney Corporation, Ocean Park Macau and The Qatar Government. The programme also examines how worker health should be viewed with the same priority as their immediate safety and in doing so, how different businesses use monitoring solutions to improve the long term health of their workforces. London Underground provides the first case study, where workers on the platforms and elsewhere are at risk of exposure to noise levels that could eventually lead to Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL). Data captured by Casella’s dBadge2 noise dosimeter and 63x Series sound level meters provide the data needed for a proper risk assessment.

Louise Long, Health & Safety Manager at London Underground, champion’s the use of the dBadge2 dosimeter especially, for its role in identifying the risk and the preventative measures needed to protect workers. Ultimately leading to lower staff absenteeism, higher levels of motivation and consequently an enhanced customer experience. Casella is passionate about improving workplace health and the ITN news programme draws attention to its trusted products which promote worker ownership and independence.
