The historic neighborhoods encompass a stretch of area from Mopac Expressway to Lamar Boulevard east and west, and from 13th St to 35th street south to north. Bordering two other historic areas, Clarksville and West Line, Old West Austin features its own collection of well-preserved properties. The American Planning Association named Old West Austin one of the 10 Great Neighborhoods in America.

School Districts

AISD public schools that serve students in the Old West Austin Area cover all three neighborhoods. Elementary schools include Bryker Woods, Matthews, Casis, and Barton Hills. The schools feed into O. Henry Middle School and Austin High School.

History

Old Enfield lies the furthest south of the three neighborhoods located near Pease Park, named for Texas Governor Elisha M. Pease. Many of the oldest colonial homes in Austin are part of this community including the Pease Mansion, also known as Woodlawn. This mansion was visited by Sam Houston and General Custer!

Pemberton Heights, north of Old Enfield, was developed in 12 sections between 1927 and the 1940s and offers mostly one- or two-story homes that are the largest houses on the largest lots in Old West Austin. This area contains more than 25 historic landmarks including the Windsor Road Bridge. Bryker Woods lies furthest north in Old West Austin, which had a good bit of its development between 1936 and 1940. The neighborhood has its own elementary school, Bryker Woods Elementary.
