HERE are two reasons why I wanted to become Editor of this magazine. One, because I’m a firm believer in making the most of where I live, being ‘a tourist on my own turf’ as I call it, and this job means I can help others do the same.

And two, because it’s a great way to support and shine a light on local independent businesses.

We’re very fortunate to have a wonderful array of independent shops in the area – they are a crucial part of our thriving towns and villages. They bring character and variety and we would miss them sorely if we didn’t have them.

These businesses – as with any independent business – have all manner of challenges to face – competition from bigger chains, roadworks, rising rents, the list goes on.

Let’s all make the conscious effort to support our independent shops, rather than miss them when they’re gone.

Blaston Show celebrates 60th Anniversary

B

LASTON Show, taking place on Sunday 25th June, is celebrating its 60th Anniversary. As ever, it is set to be the perfect family day out, with plenty for all to enjoy.

Native breeds of cattle, such as Hereford, South Devon and Lincoln Red will be on show, together with a selection of prime stock cattle. There is also a Sheep & Lamb Show with a vast array of classes including a Fleece Competition.

Over 100 dogs take part in the Dog Show each year. Catering for Kennel Club registered and Heinz 57 breeds, both working dogs and family pets can put their best paw forward.

Competition is particularly fierce for the ‘Waggiest Tail’ and ‘Best Biscuit Catcher’ top prize. There is also some highly entertaining terrier racing.

Meanwhile, for equestrians Blaston Show offers everything from show jumping, showing and in-hand classes to the ever popular ‘Family Horse or Pony’. Last year over 20 children took part in the competitive Fancy Dress competition: a spectacular Air Ambulance perched atop the tiniest shetland

For the more mechanically minded, a Classic and Vintage Car Run concludes in a grand parade in the main arena. There is always something unusual to see such as Edwardian fire engines and 1940s lorries.

ACK for a second year following its highly successful launch in 2016, Aqua Park Rutland has reopened for summer 2017. The UK’s biggest water sports Aqua Park at Rutland Water is more than double in size for 2017. Rutland Cider Company officially on tap

T

HE Rutland Cider Company, owned by the directors of The Grainstore Brewery, has produced a range of ciders, including Rutland apple, Bushberry (blackberry and raspberry), Rhuberry (rhubarb and strawberry) and Mango.

Director Peter Atkinson said: “We’ve experimented with ciders and perries at The Grainstore before and saw a lot of potential for developing flavours based on great British produce.

“We’ve been introducing the brand slowly over the last couple of months, including tasters at the Rutland 20th Anniversary celebrations on April 1st and they were really well received.”

The ciders will be on tap at The Grainstore Brewery’s Rutland Cider & Sausage Festival from 26 to 29 May and then available in pubs including The Grainstore across the region.

Three years ago this month, a new fundraising group was launched to address a very specific mission in the county: “To ensure that every person living with a long-term condition within Rutland and the surrounding community receives the financial and emotional support they are entitled to.”

Amander Meade met the founders of the group to find out more.

RISH Ruddle and Elizabeth Mills have been great friends for many years. Both passionate about the county and former High Sheriffs of Rutland, they have been involved in many ground-breaking and successful fundraising projects including the famous Good and New Clothes Sale held annually at Barnsdale Lodge. Until three years ago all the funds raised at the sale were passed to Macmillan’s headquarters and they in turn funded a dedicated adviser at Citizens Advice in Rutland. In 2014, centralisation of funds meant that Rutland’s adviser would be withdrawn, sharing the service instead with Leicestershire. Trish explains what happened next.

“We felt it was vital for Rutland to keep a dedicated adviser based in the county so we launched a new fundraising committee and forged a new working relationship with Citizens Advice, with the aim of making sure that funds raised in the county were used specifically to help those living here and in the surrounding villages.” Initially, the emphasis was on providing free, non-medical advice to patients of all ages affected by cancer but very swiftly, the team realised that they could extend the service to those living with other long-term conditions such as dementia, stroke and mental illness.

Three years on, through the fundraising efforts of some 60+ volunteers, For Rutland can pay the salaries of two full-time specialist advisers who remain based at the Citizen’s Advice office on Oakham’s High Street and who have helped Rutland residents gain access to £1,546,226 (accurate to end of March 2017) in grants and benefits

at a time when they most need financial help. “When a life-changing condition strikes a family or individual, often there are far-reaching implications,” explains Elizabeth.

“Our specialist advisers Julie Bell and Liz Steele are highly trained and experienced in social care and NHS systems and can help navigate people through what might otherwise prove an overwhelming situation. For example, the application form for a blue badge to help you park is 12 pages long – quite a challenge if you are not well. We can’t provide a cure but we can make sure Rutlanders can access NHS services, grants and benefits as well as helping with housing, debt, employment and relationship issues.”

For Rutland volunteers are rolling out a series of fundraising events throughout the year following on from the Good and New Clothing Sale that took place in March. You can support the giant tombola at this month’s county show as well as a Golf Tournament in September and the collection at the Cottesmore Hunt’s Boxing Day meet. “Our volunteers are so loyal,” adds Trish, “We differ from most fundraising groups in that we have a major financial commitment in the form of the two specialist advisers and must ensure that they are fully funded to retain this important service for the people of Rutland and the surrounding area. Without donations the service would disappear. Every pound raised generates £5 for the benefit of this community and we guarantee every penny stays right here.”

Ganders Farm Ian and Lauren Horton are living their dream. Having bought a rundown farm at auction five years ago, they now have a thriving 11 acres and produce wonderful handmade soap and ice cream from milk supplied by their much-loved herd of goats. Amander Meade visited to find out more.

KEEPING THINGS SIMPLE… Lauren and Ian began their married life together with a small back garden vegetable patch, four chickens and a dream of selfsufficiency. Having acquired Ganders Farm on the Northamptonshire border in 2012, the couple are moving ever closer to their goal thanks to a great deal of hard work and the development of their goats’ milk products.

With sensitive skin herself, Lauren heard that soap made from goat’s milk was delicate and gentle to skin so began to research the subject.

“Our goal was to create minimal ingredient soap. We had an excess of milk from the goats and through trial and error combined it with rapeseed oil, which is very moisturising but not oily, and coconut oil, which produces a great lather. The result was our Kiss soap – Kiss stands for ‘keep it simple soap’ which is suitable for any age and skin type but especially great for those who suffer with eczema or other dry skin conditions,” she explains. Lauren milks her own small herd of goats who are all named and much loved by the couple and their little boy William who is four.

As well as several kinds of soap, the couple produce a range of ice cream also made with goats’ milk and instilled with the values that run through everything that goes on at Ganders Farm. “Our main rule is about provenance and inclusion,” says Lauren, “If an ingredient doesn’t need to be there – it’s out! We spend a great deal of effort trying to get the finest ingredients from as close to the farm as possible to reduce food miles. We also make sure our goats are really happy. Some were born here and some have been rehomed with us. We replicate certain aspects of their natural behaviour such

as foraging and climbing; they all have their own very distinct personalities and keep us highly entertained with their antics.”

FABULOUS FLAVOURS… Sold through farmers’ markets and a selection of local farm and village shops, Ganders Farm ice cream contains no preservatives or artificial colours and has just half the fat of traditional cow’s milk ice cream, making it easier to digest.

Flavours include fresh mint, gooseberry and elderflower, and chocolate and raspberry ripple with some ingredients grown on site. “We like to keep our flavours seasonal depending on the fruit available. This summer we will be using small independent businesses, pickyour-own farms and village cooperatives to supply ingredients whenever we can. Other farmers we meet at the markets produce some brilliant products, which will be making regular appearances in our seasonal flavours.

We believe that if you say locally produced that should mean locally sourced too.

“I think that because we really are trying to do our best by the animals, the environment and the local economy, we are getting some really great feedback from all over the UK, which inspires us to keep planning and moving forward.”

Art in Rutland This month sees the welcome return of the annual Open Studios event in Rutland. Amander Meade investigates some of the work on display and gathers up news from the region’s galleries.

Nicola Elstone is a designer and print maker using traditional techniques and creating beautiful homeware on her 18th century antique letter press. New for 2017 Nicola has developed the brand-new Blendology collection to reflect the growing popularity of tea blending. Nicola’s T41 mix-and-match teapots and cup sets will be displayed alongside beautiful work by Leila Arzaghi and Linda Farquharson in Nicola’s Braunston Studio, every weekend in June.

In Leicestershire and Rutland we are fortunate to have a flourishing community of artists, craftspeople and designer-makers living and working across the region. The artistic highlight of the year is the annual Open Studios event in which artists literally invite the public to view their work either at home, in private studios or other exhibition spaces. Each weekend in June the public can find out more about the techniques and passions involved in each artist’s work, which is usually for sale priced from as little as just £5 and in a huge variety of media.

Alan Oliver is one of the region’s best loved artists and will be showing a collection of recent work. Alan’s inspiration comes mostly from the beautiful landscapes of Rutland and lately he has been deliberately using much brighter colours and painting in a more relaxed style. “The challenge is finding a good idea then adapting it into a good enough design and composition. Increasingly I rarely paint exactly what I see - I try to bear in mind Picasso’s words when he said ‘never copy, always create’”. www.alan-oliver.co.uk

Professional artist and tutor Sue Bagshaw has an exceptional reputation for portrait painting and teaches small classes in Oakham, in her own studio or at clients’ homes. Content is built around the needs of her students with basic materials included in the price. A supporter of the Open Studio project, Sue says the scheme is a wonderful way to discover art you love and for individual artists to promote their work. GALLERY NEWS Trent Gallery in Oakham will be showcasing some magnificent original painting, editions and sculpture from award-winning artists and exciting new talents in a new exhibition between 10 and 17 June. Work is themed around Country Life - A celebration of the British landscape and the animal kingdom that inhabits it. The exhibition brings together the best contemporary art inspired by all that the countryside has to offer.

Samuel Robson Fine Art specialises in the sale and acquisition of work by British Artists predominantly in the 20th and early 21st century. Sam offers expert advice on the building, curation and sale of private collections and shows work at his base in Oakham or at clients’ homes. “All our current stock can be viewed via our website; we are always looking to acquire important British Modern Art and will buy or consign from private collectors.”

Made is a small independent gallery based in Uppingham that sells beautiful handmade jewellery, ceramics, leather goods, glassware, art, textiles and cards. Owned by Julia Groundsell, herself a specialist jewellery maker, the gallery is always full of unique collections and priced to suit all budgets. “We try to offer a selection of stylish contemporary jewellery makers who impress us with their pieces,” says Julia who also accepts commissions for bespoke pieces.

Artist Hilary Salomon and her husband Mike Moralee, who is a photographer, opened North Street East Gallery two years ago. Originally planned as a pop-up Open Studios space, the venture was so successful the couple decided to stay and continue to support local art as the core of their business. This year they have 11 Rutland artists exhibiting with them and are running a special exhibition of Rutland scenes.

There’s lots of new work in Itch Gallery this month including new paintings by Becca Clegg, and textile sculptures from Characters by Julia, which are very cleverly made faux taxidermy sculptures made from painted cotton and Harris Tweed. Gillian Durno has some new canvas prints in the gallery. Work by Louise Brown includes ceramic sculptures and some of her paintings. “We have lots of work squirreled away in the stock room so if you can’t find what you’re looking for or want to see more work by a specific artist – just ask,” says owner, Jenny Creasey.

Why summer lamb trumps spring The Olive Branch’s co-owner and head chef Sean Hope shares a classic seasonal lamb recipe

S

UMMER is finally upon us and The Olive Branch garden is coming into its own.

A change in season means a change in ingredients, and lamb is always towards the front of my mind at this time of year. Tempting as it is to tuck into lamb as soon as the clocks go forward, it’s actually better to enjoy this meat in midsummer. The lamb cuts you get around Easter tend to be from indoor-raised animals born in the autumn of the year before. Wait till July and August, however, and you’ll be eating lamb born in February and March and put out to gambol and graze on the lush spring grass. Not surprisingly, the taste and texture are much better.

Where should you buy your lamb?

Your local butcher is often a good option. In our area there is also Lavinton Lamb (www.lavinton.com), who farm at Lenton near Grantham in Lincolnshire.

Over the road in our pub paddock, our ducks have now arrived, which means we can now offer duck or hen’s eggs for breakfast! And in other news, we were recently named in The Times ‘Top 20 UK Pubs for Foodies’ list. Earlier this year we bagged the Editor’s Choice Award in the Good Hotel Guide 2017 in the Gastropub Hotel category, so all in all 2017 has been pretty exciting so far!

Here’s a lamb recipe that went down well at my recent cookery demonstration at The Olive Branch.

Roast rack of lamb, rosemary parmentier potatoes, grilled asparagus, morel sauce Serves 4 Roast rack of lamb • 1 rack of lamb, French trimmed (ask your supplier) • 2 crushed garlic cloves • 1 large sprig of rosemary 1. Seal the lamb rack in a large hot frying pan 2. Season with salt and pepper 3. Preheat oven to 190 Celsius (Gas Mark 5) 4. Place the lamb rack onto a wire rack on top of the garlic and rosemary 5. Roast in the oven for 15 mins (pink), remove and cover with foil 6. Rest for seven minutes before carving/serving Rosemary parmentier potatoes • 4 medium baking potatoes, peeled and cut into cubes • 1 tablespoon rapeseed oil • 1 teaspoon fresh finely chopped rosemary 1. Blanch the diced potatoes in

a pan of boiling water for five minutes 2. Strain and allow to cool 3. Heat a large frying pan and add the pre-cooked potatoes 4. Lightly colour, then add the rosemary and season with salt and pepper 5. Place the potatoes onto a roasting tray and continue cooking in the oven with the lamb rack 6. When cooked, remove from the oven and serve Grilled asparagus • 16 spears of asparagus, trimmed & peeled 1. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil 2. Add the asparagus in three lots and blanch for three minutes 3. Remove from the water and refresh in ice-cold water 4. To serve, heat a frying pan, add a little butter and grill the asparagus for 60 seconds 5. Season with salt and pepper, then serve

Morel sauce • 200g fresh morel mushrooms, trimmed and cleaned • 1 shallot, peeled and diced • 1 clove garlic, peeled and chopped • 1 tablespoon sherry vinegar • 1 small glass dry sherry • 400g beef jus • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard • 50ml whipping cream 1. Sauté the shallot and garlic in a drizzle of rapeseed oil until soft 2. Add the morel mushrooms and cook for a further two minutes 3. Add the sherry vinegar and reduce completely 4. Add the sherry and bring to the boil 5. Add the beef jus, mustard and cream 6. Bring back to the boil, season to taste and serve

After spending more and more time passionately researching coffee, he decided to make his hobby into a business and started roasting.

For Will, research is key and he has gone on many courses and trips to find top quality coffees. After galvanising his ideas in Columbia, he launched Well Roasted Coffee from his HQ near Market Harborough.

Well Roasted Coffee provide interesting coffees from around the world – from Columbia to Guatamala to Sumatra. Will has invested much of his time ensuring that Well Roasted provides coffees it can proudly stand behind. All of the coffees are top grade, rainforest aligned

and high grown. Will says: “At high altitude it takes longer for the cherry to mature so you get much more flavour.” He uses his extensive research to educate coffee drinkers, informing that it takes two years for a farmer to produce a coffee bean, and after an anticipatory 52 weeks before the first flower, they must wait a

further 48 weeks for the cherry to develop.

Will has also spent plenty of time ensuring that he gets the roasting profile of each bean right. Offering only a handful of different coffees allows him to make sure every roast is delivered to perfection.

CRAFTY BURGER 2-6 St Martin’s Walk, St Martin’s Square, Leicester, LE1 5DG In September 2014 Chris Elliman and Andy Hall discussed launching a pop-up burger restaurant at Andy’s coffee shop, St Martin’s Tea & Coffee.

Various names were considered for the pop-up including Cow & Pickle and Elliman’s Burgers.

Eventually Chris landed on Crafty Burger, which became a reality in November 2014.

The laid-back, buzzing pop-up burger restaurant, which runs on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 6-8.30pm, was an instant success. Customers flocked to try Chris’s creative burgers, which are made with beef from March House Farm in Great Dalby, Leicestershire. The buns come from Toby Milner Bakery in Blaby.

Options include such delights as The Crafty Poet (beef patty, smoked Applewood cheddar,

American cheese, smoked streaky bacon, salted onion crisps, BBQ sauce, aioli) and El Rojo (beef patty, chorizo and onion jam, red bacon, Red Leicester, chimichurri, aioli). And who could resist the invitation to pimp one’s fries?

That success has continued. If you visit St Martin’s Tea & Coffee in the evening at the weekend when Crafy Burger is running, you’ll often see queues spilling onto the street. Chris and team regularly deal with more than 200 covers a night. Part of the success is down to the quality of ingredients, the rest is down to people loving the fun street-food vibe.

ADA, specialising in Turkish cuisine, only opened 18 months ago in Stamford and has already made its mark having been recommended for the 2017 Michelin Guide.

We booked a table for a Wednesday evening and, arriving at 7.30pm, the restaurant had a comfortable buzz and a delightful ambience with its jewelled lampshades and beautiful artefacts hanging on the wall.

Iva is in charge of front of house and looked after us well – she explained that everything is made in the restaurant using authentic Turkish recipes often passed down through generations.

The menu is extensive so it seemed a good idea to share a mixed Mezze Platter – the lightest softest flat bread (made that morning) was served with Hummus, Tzatziki, Taramosalata, Babaganoush, Turk Borek (feta pastries) Falafel, Sucuk (beef sausage), Hellim and Head Chef Ali’s homemade Chilli sauce and yogurt sauce.

Overwhelmed slightly by the quantity, we did well – everything was full of flavour and a great way to experience the many dishes.

For our main course we were able to try Lamb Shish, a Yavash meat platter, and Sebzeli Iskelder – charcoal grilled vegetables with Halloumi, tomato and yogurt sauce – with side dishes of rice and salad. The meat is all cooked on a charcoal grill, giving it a wonderful succulence and flavor. It was all delightfully flavoursome and colourful, and perfect for sharing.

To finish we enjoyed a Turkish dessert plate with Turkish Delight, Baklawa and fresh fruit with a glass of refreshing Turkish Chai.

We are already looking forward to our next visit. There are two set menu feast

options from £29.95 per person and lots of options for vegetarians and special diets.

HE Coach House is a lovely traditional pub in the heart of Rutland.

Although it’s on the main Stamford Road, as soon as you step inside, the wooden beams, the real ale, the exposed brickwork and flagstone floors all take you to a different world. While we were lucky enough to be visiting on a warm May day, I could easily imagine enjoying a red wine by the roaring log fire in the cold winter months.

We visited the Coach House on a Thursday lunchtime and there was a great ‘friendly pub’ atmosphere – a group of friends enjoying a drink at the bar and various twosomes enjoying the food. We had a lovely table by the window in the main bar, but there’s also the option of the restaurant that seats 40 and even a private function that seats 12 guests.

Starter options included Fillet of Seabass served with cauliflower and pomegranate couscous and a cucumber consommé at a reasonable £6.45 and the Chorizo Scotch Egg made of Spanish sausage and Grasmere Farm sausage meat servedvwith homemade piccalilli for £5.95.

For the mains, as well as numerous Grill options, you’ve got a choice between home comforts like Thai Chicken Curry and Fish and Chips, alongside Fillet of Seabass with King Prawns and Mussels and a Duo of Pork. Plenty of options that are worth exploring for an evening meal.

It was such a warm day we both opted for something a little lighter. I chose the Cajun Chicken Caeser Salad with Bacon (£11.95) while Tracy enjoyed the Warm Quiche Salad, and we shared a portion of chips. The salad was a substantial portion – it beat me! There is a smaller portion size for £5.95 for those of you who aren’t as greedy as I am. The Cajun chicken was delicious with a nice kick.

Tracy’s warm quiche was equally sizeable and equally well received, with lots of lovely melted cheddar cheese and sitting on a bed of fresh tomato.

The Coach House offers an additional menu for Sunday lunches, with all the popular Roast classics alongside fish, bangers and mash and vegetarian options. A lovely pub with good food and a nice atmosphere, with seven en-suite bedrooms which, with the function room available to hire, makes it a great option for a family get-together with relatives travelling to Rutland from a distance.

Our oceans, our future Hambleton Hall’s Michelin starred Head Chef, Aaron Patterson, team’s up with protégé Alan Gleeson to create a World Oceans Day Gourmet menu. Deborah Pennell checks into the kitchen of this beautiful hotel to find out what they have in store.

The History of World Oceans Day? The Canadian Government originally proposed the concept of World Oceans Day (WOD) at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. By 2008, and as a result of a widely circulated petition, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution recognising 8 June as World Oceans Day - a day to celebrate the ocean and its importance in our lives. Special events help to inspire more involvement in conserving this vitally important resource for generations to come.

This year’s theme is “Our oceans, our future.”

With 25 years’ service as Head Chef at Hambleton Hall, Aaron Patterson has most likely cooked more fish in his career than most Rutlanders will in a lifetime. This year Aaron has asked one of his many protégés, Alan Gleeson, who worked in the kitchens at Hambleton Hall for four years and is now Head Chef at No.131 The Promenade, Cheltenham, to create a Gourmet Corner Menu to mark WOD. Aaron said, “WOD is a date in the Hambleton Hall kitchen calendar when we champion sustainable fishing and celebrate what our seas can provide now, and hopefully for future generations.”

What prompted you as chefs to get involved in World Oceans Day? AP: As a keen fisherman, I have witnessed first-hand the decline in certain species of fish and have been affected by the restrictions put in place by the authorities to try to combat the problem. We need to address the situation now, and WOD does just that. Making people aware of overfishing, pollution and the effects of global warming on our oceans is so important.

AG: As a Chef, I feel responsible for teaching my clients about the ingredients I use – ‘by

catch’ is a big issue as far as I am concerned, and something Hugh Fearnley–Whittingstall alerted us to a few years ago. The yo-yo effect of sea bass availability is a prime example of over fishing – one minute it is plentiful and cheap to buy, the next, difficult to get hold of and therefore astronomically expensive.

What fish have you chosen to showcase in your menu?

AG: Mackerel and Selsey Lobster – both are sustainably sourced and found in UK waters.

What is your all-time favourite fish?

AP: Langoustine AG: John Dory From your experience, where is the best place in the world to eat fish?

The answer was conclusive; both Aaron and Alan agreed: Applecross Inn, Wester Ross, around two and half hours North of Inverness.

The eyes have it

It’s 1934 and Market Harborough is about to become the first place ever to use something so common today that we don’t even notice it’s there – until it’s not. Today every driver faced with a long, dark drive along unknown roads must surely give thanks to a small but vital ’30s invention… the ‘cat’s eye’ road stud. WORDS: Caroline Aston

T

HE man usually quoted as the creator of the cat’s eye is Yorkshireman Percy Shaw. Born in 1890, he was a small-time businessman who loved to tinker in his spare time.

He liked a pint or three too and used to use tramlines to guide his drive home from the pub.

His headlights reflected the polished steel and hey presto! But with the march of modern transport, tramlines started to disappear, making life much more dangerous for Percy – and for any pedestrians who were about when he drove home after a session.

Late one night in October 1933 Percy Shaw set off to drive home to Halifax from the Old Dolphin Hotel in Clayton Heights, where he’d been enjoying some brown ale. A combination of dense fog and no tramlines led to slow progress – and nearly to Mr Shaw’s death.

Suddenly, believing himself on a straight stretch of road, his headlamps picked up the gleam of a cat’s eyes, a cat that was sitting on top of a wall.

But the angle looked wrong and Shaw pulled up. Inspection revealed that not only was he on the wrong side of the foggy road but that the cat’s wall had a sheer drop just behind it – Clayton Heights is about 1000 feet above sea level.

Food for thought indeed. A shaken and suddenly sober Shaw got back behind the wheel and finally reached home safely. But his near brush with disaster set him thinking… something had to be done to replace the tramlines and make his drives home safe again. He needed something reflective, like the steel and the cat‘s eyes that had saved his life, so he surreptitiously removed some shiny glass studs from road signs to see if that kind of thing might do the trick. But these reflectors were far too fragile to withstand traffic and, of course, there was the problem of how to keep them clean. So this spare-time tinkerer tinkered away and came up with the now familiar design: a cast iron base, a heavy duty rubber shroud containing reflective lenses and a simple wiping mechanism, which cleaned the lenses when depressed by traffic.

Bingo! The cat’s eye was born but it wasn’t Percy’s design that made Market Harborough a ’30s trendsetter. What was installed there in 1934 was another product, similar in design and purpose, but rejoicing in the name of Follsain Gloworm Studs, the brainchild of a man called Neuhaus.

But it was Percy Shaw who hit the jackpot. He patented his idea late in 1934 and a year later founded his own company ‘Reflecting Roadstuds Ltd’ to manufacture cat’s eyes. But this was not to be an overnight success story – initial sales were slow. What really turned the tide was gaining Government approval and the blackout of World War II meant that these little reflectors came into their own and proved their worth in keeping traffic safely moving. Shaw’s firm, located near his home in Boothtown, was soon producing over a million ‘eyes’ a year, which were sold all over the world. Percy Shaw found himself a millionaire and was made an OBE in 1965 for his services to exports.

However, this was no normal millionaire. Percy lived out the rest of his life in his old home, a place he rendered Spartan in the extreme by stripping out all the carpets and most of the furniture. He kept four televisions constantly turned on, tuned into BBC1, BBC2, ITV and BBC2 in colour, but with the sound turned down. He loved nothing more that any evening of telly, beer and crisps. His only luxury was a Rolls Royce and he never married, though he enjoyed women’s company. He was 86 when he died from cancer and heart disease in 1976 and there was amazement when his will showed that the cat’s eye magnate had an estate valued at just £193,500.

A quirky brainwave from an eccentric character has saved 100s of lives so no wonder Bernard Ingham included Percy in his list of the 50 greatest Yorkshiremen. And our own Market Harborough heads the list of places where dangerous darkness was transformed by a simple line of glowing studs that led drivers safely home. That Yorkshire cat really didn’t know what it was starting on that foggy night it sat on a wall near Percy Shaw’s favourite pub!

In pursuit of excellence Matthew Wright is no stranger to hard work and creativity. From Cork to Copenhagen, Alexander Lewis kitchens are now being installed in some of the most prestigious homes across the UK and Europe. Kirstie Mitchell finds out more.

“I knew early on that I wanted to build lovely furniture of a very high standard which offers great value for money. It’s a great feeling to build in the UK when so much manufacturing is done abroad.”

AVING spent some time chatting with Matthew in the new kitchen showroom conveniently located in the centre of Market Harborough, his passion is evident and highly infectious.

The secret to his success? “Our reputation,” says Matthew. “Attention to detail and our customer service are our number one priority.

This is something that has been ingrained in me from the very early stages of my career. Our customers are King.”

Alexander Lewis is a true bespoke furniture company. Matthew explains: “I compare it to buying a suit. If you come to us we will make you a suit from scratch with the best fabric possible and it will be tailored just for you; not bought from a peg and then altered to fit.”

Having graduated in Business Studies, Matthew secured a job as a graduate trainee for John Lewis on Oxford Street. “It was amazing to work behind the scenes and absolutely everything was based on ways to enhance the customer’s experience and ensure the reputation for first class service was consistent. It was this ethos that I took with me after I left and it has been my mantra ever since.”

Matthew relocated to Market Harborough to head up a new kitchen department at a local firm. After gaining experience in kitchen design, Matthew decided to go it alone. In

1995 with a trusted carpenter and a small workshop, he started selling kitchens trading as Artisan Bespoke Furniture Ltd. Matthew says: “When I look back now, there was no way at the beginning I thought ‘OK, I am going to set myself a target that in 20 years’ time I will have a 20,000 square-foot workshop, employ nearly 30 staff and make kitchens for £30 million plus houses.’”

Sales took off when Matthew changed the name of the company. “I decided to change the name of the company and my son came up with the name Alexander Lewis (the names of my two sons) and I thought ‘actually, that could work!’ Unbelievably within weeks the number of kitchen orders doubled.”

As a traditional bespoke furniture company manufacturing in the UK, there are many challenges. “I knew early on that I wanted to build lovely furniture of a very high standard which offers great value for money,” says Matthew.

“It’s a great feeling to build in the UK when so much manufacturing is done abroad.”

Combining bespoke methods with modern finishes using state-of-the-art technology has been one of the biggest developments for the company. Always in the pursuit of excellence, Matthew has invested heavily in new software, an extension to the workshop and installed new high-end spraying equipment.

He explains: “The investment ensures there are no limits to design and manufacturing.

If a client would like suede textured finishes or a large sheet of ceramic which looks like marble cladding, then that is now achievable.’’

When he’s not at work, Matthew loves to spend time with his wife and two sons.

You can often find them on the water during the summer months, wakeboarding, windsurfing or sailing. “A typical weekend consists of spending time with family and friends, dog walking, a few glasses at my local pub, and out on the water.”

What does the future hold for Alexander Lewis? “We will just keep doing what we do and keep doing it well and not rest on our laurels,” explains Matthew. “I have a great team behind me who are just as passionate as I am. Oundle Food Festival ‘bigger and better’ than ever this year

T

HE Oundle Food Festival is a mustn’t-miss for local foodies, and this year the jewel in its crown, the Street Market, will bring more than 75 stallholders to the town. The market takes place on Saturday 24 June from 9am-4pm but there’ll be events, special menus, product launches and offers in the week before, providing opportunities to learn about the food and drink that is lovingly created in the region and to meet those who grow, raise, cook, bake, brew, distil and make the many treats on offer.

The Street Market, which will be held in the Market Place and New Street, is a bunting-bedecked sight to behold, and with the addition of music and dance from the Oundle Fringe Festival, street entertainment from Corby’s Balls Up Juggling Club and games from the World Conker Championships, it is an event enjoyed by visitors of all ages. A Park & Ride service provided by Oundle School will be available from Oundle Wharf, where Food Festival attendees can also have a look around the shops of sponsors AGA Oundle and Hambleton Bakery.

Whilst many stallholders, such as Yum Yum Tree Fudge, New Lodge Farm, Munchy Seeds, Profumo Coffee Company, Riverford Organic Delivery, Saxby’s Cider and Lincolnshire Poacher, will return by popular demand, there are also some newcomers.

Lincolnshire farmer Amy Jobe, attending her first ever Food Festival, will be serving up burgers and wraps using beef from her home-reared Lincoln Red cattle, and Melt’on Ice Cream will delight with their range of luxury ice-creams. Other new additions include Macaron Marlo’s hand-made French Macarons, Taartie’s delicious sough dough donuts and Nassington-based Jar & Spoon’s pickles and preserves with a twist.

Rents to rise quicker than property prices in next five years This month, our local property buy-to-let expert and property investment adviser, David Crooke, owner of UPP Property Agents, explains why the next five years will see some interesting changes to our local property market.

R

ECENT research has concluded that rents will rise faster than property prices.

Over the last five years, property values in Stamford have risen by 22.6%, whilst rents have only risen by 9.9%. But by 2022, Stamford rents will increase by c. 23%, whereas Stamford property values will only grow by c.17%.

Recently, demand for rental properties continued to rise whilst the press predicted some landlords might sell and reduce their portfolios, creating less choice and pushing rents higher. In reality, there appears to be a dearth of new rental properties coming on to the lettings market.

Landlords have some intriguing challenges ahead of them, most notably in that the Tories have changed the taxation rules for landlords in the way buy-to-let properties are to be taxed. On top of that, there’s the ban on letting agent fees that’s still to come into force (probably in 2018). When that happened in Scotland in 2012, Scottish letting agents passed on those fees to their landlords, who in turn increased the rent they charged to their tenants.

The government should be wary about indicating both red and green

lights at the same time to the private rented sector. They can’t expect small private landlords to house around a fifth of the population and then tax them out of oblivion. Something has to give, and that will be significant rent rises over the coming few years.

With the challenges ahead (budget and general election), house price inflation will be tempered over the coming five years. The number of properties on the market remains close to historic lows, which is both good and bad; it keeps houses prices relatively stable, and yet it impedes choice for buyers… and hence why I believe property values will only be approximately 17% higher in five years’ time.

In addition, the significant shortage of new homes being built adds further pressure. If people aren’t buying houses, the local authority aren’t building council houses and with the average rent for a Stamford rental property currently at £749pcm, over the next 5 years, I predict the average rent in Stamford will rise to c. £921pcm.

The National Gardens Scheme has been raising money for nursing and caring charities since 1927 and last year donated over £2.7 million.

Admission ranges from £4 to £5 with children free and 80p in every pound going straight to the charity.

Saturday 24 June, 7.30pm MUSIC: A Celebration of Favourites Chater Community Choir will be entertaining audiences again with a concert of their vocal favourites in aid of Dove Cottage Hospice in Ridlington, which provides supportive palliative day care services for those living with cancer and other progressive conditions and Wildlife Works Children’s’ Nursery in Kenya where proceeds will go towards the construction of a play area for the children.

Oakham Festival 2017 The Oakham Festival is back for 2017 with a wide-ranging programme of events to suit all ages.

T

HIS year the festival is geared towards audience participation and connecting with the community. The action kicks off on Wednesday 28 June with Oakham School’s Chamber Choir Lunchtime Concert – always a hit. That evening, join the staff at Oakham Castle for a Crime and Punishment walking tour around Oakham, a perfect outing for all the family. But get your tickets quick, this event is limited to 25 people.

Thursday 29 June is a real community day at the Festival with a lunchtime concert of ensembles from the Rutland Music Hub, followed by the ever-popular Comedy Night at The Grainstore. This year we’re thrilled to welcome Patrick Monahan and Tom Binns to headline.

Friday 30 June starts with a lunchtime concert by local harpist Harriet Flather and then a real Carry On at The Castle in the evening, where Uppingham Theatre Company will present a radio play that they would like you to come and see recorded. It’s sure to be a great night out.

Saturday 1 July is a busy day for the Festival with a free showcase from the students of Rutland Young Dance Academy to start the day off, followed by ‘Tallis, Tavener and Tambourines’ – a talk by renowned music historian Andrew Gant.

In the evening, the Festival is delighted to welcome back the Rutland Concert Band for the Proms in the Park. Bring your picnics, flags, biggest singing voices and all the family! Food

and drink will be available to purchase from the BBQ kindly provided by The Lions and the Pimms will be flowing. If an indoor event is more your thing, The Grainstore has the fantastic Outlaw Eagles playing at 8.30pm.

On Sunday 2 June, you can wind down with the Rutland Sinfonia playing works by Mendelssohn, Mozart, Delius and Schubert at 4pm in Oakham School Chapel. The whole Festival is rounded off in style by a community cast performing Sarah Bell’s physical theatre piece, Threads.

The Oakham Festival looks set to be a great week this year, with something to suit everyone.
