RUTLAND LIVING

Our main feature this month is on alfresco dining across our region, which has changed and developed hugely over the last generation. The outside used to be that area out the back that you went to if there was nowhere to sit in the pub or if you wanted to get away from a smoke-filled bar - but everything changed as a result of Covid. Suddenly, the outside became a desirable spot, and proprietors invested much more in it. At the same time, local councils became more accommodating about the productive use of outdoor space.
The result is many outdoor spaces fitted out now with restaurant tables, elaborate awnings, heaters, top-of-the-range BBQs, welltended flowerbeds, outdoor bars and even large screen TVs. And in our market towns there is the (mostly) delightful sight of punters spilling out onto the streets. Sheepmarket in Stamford, for example, has been transformed from a chaotic car park to the merry bustle of an Italian piazza.
So much has changed, and pretty much all for the better. But in some ways the outdoor experience is the same as it’s always been –a chance to get out into the glorious outdoors on a sunny day. Which we hope you will be able to do lots of this month…

Perfect for garden enthusiasts, families and anyone wanting a magical day out, this unmissable event is set to be packed with inspiration, beauty and fun for all ages.. See p15 for more details.
GLOBAL BIRDFAIR 2025, ‘Festival of Nature’, is taking place from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 July and aims to inspire all generations about the natural world. It’s held at Lyndon Top Caravan Site by Rutland Water, so watch out for ospreys flying overhead to their nest nearby. This year’s conservation project, Safeguarding Ocean Species, conveys a message to us all about the plight of our oceans and the life that calls it home. Global Birdfair raises funds for BirdLife International, making a real difference to conservation worldwide.
Events, lectures and workshops are scheduled throughout the long weekend. Wander around 300 exhibitors in seven large exhibitor marquees. Admire creativity in the dedicated Puffin art marquee and watch artists create the Global Birdfair mural throughout the three days. Join scheduled nature walks and try out the latest optical and camera gear in the ‘Falcon’ and ‘Hobby’ marquees before you buy; there’s great advice from manufacturers for all levels of interest and budgets. There’s also the ‘Discovery Zone,’ which hosts activities for the youngest visitors on Saturday and Sunday, and also offers a gathering place for visitors attending Global Birdfair for the first time.
Among the exhibitors, there will be conservation organisations promoting the amazing work they undertake. Discover more about nature-rich destinations around the world, as well as places close to home. Browse the book stalls and meet your favourite nature writers at the book-signing stand or listen to their talks in the ‘Turnstone’ authors’ area. One of the most popular activities is the bird-ringing demonstration. Get up close to familiar bird species and learn more about them from the qualified volunteer team. And for anyone looking for a nature-related career path in field work, science, guiding or tour operating, technology or writing, find your way to the ‘Young Conservationists Hub’ to learn more, make friends and create opportunities.
When you’re ready to relax, choose your favourite catering outlet, grab a drink from the bar and listen to one of the podcast interviews at the dedicated podcasting station.

This En-suite in Wing is effortlessly chic. With crisp clean lines, a soothing warm palette and full height tiles, this minimalist approach provides the perfect sanctuary to relax, unwind and soak in style
When the client approached Spaces by Design, the bathroom was a true blank canvas giving them the opportunity to reimagine and elevate the space. The request was for a luxurious but calm feel with a freestanding bath and a walk-in shower, akin to a boutique hotel-inspired retreat. They began by exploring visual references online to align on style and atmosphere.
Luxury can mean different things to different people, whether it’s veined marble tiles or a claw-foot brass bath. But the common thread that binds all these viewpoints are a few key considerations.
Touch points – these will be how taps, fixtures and fittings feel and operate. Used multiple times a day, higher-quality ‘touchable’ fixtures are more likely to last longer – they are more likely better-made than their cheaper counterparts and therefore worth the investment.
Home Design Studio
Designing spaces better
Materials – Premium materials elevate a bathroom beyond the ordinary. Here, a matt stone freestanding bath adds both texture and substance—far superior to standard acrylic. Full-height wall tiles, with their minimal grout lines, contribute to a serene, clutter-free atmosphere.
Lighting – thoughtful lighting is essential for functionality and mood. Overhead lights have been strategically positioned to illuminate key areas, while the subtle backlighting behind the bespoke mirrors introduces a soft, ambient glow. A statement cluster of glass pendants at the foot of the bath acts as a focal point, adding elegance.
Experience – an intangible point to quantify, but in this case, it’s the oversized overhead shower recessed flush into the ceiling; the discreetly positioned toilet, out of sight, not only from the door but away from the bath. Because how can you unwind while you soak with a toilet brush only a couple of feet from your head!

From Stamford to Miami and back again, Harry Miller – son of White Ginger founder Emma Femminile – brings his linen menswear label, Senja, home to where it all began
FORMER Stamford Junior School pupil, Harry Miller, son of White Ginger founder Emma Femminile, grew up immersed in the world of textiles, travel and fashion. Family trips to Bali weren’t just holidays, but days spent exploring the fabric markets and visiting the White Ginger factory.
Aged 18, inspired by the vivid colours of Bali and the timeless style of the Riviera, Harry began working on ideas for a men’s label of his own. A few years later, that idea became Senja – meaning ‘sunset’ in Indonesian – a brand dedicated to refined linen essentials designed for life’s sun-drenched moments.
Harry is now based in Miami, where he opened his first store last year, and where he shares space and spirit with White Ginger. The two brands complement each other like mother and son: one known for feminine elegance; the other for laid-back luxury with a masculine edge. ‘I have been very fortunate to have my mother as my mentor,’ says Harry, who graduated from the University of Miami. ‘I didn’t want to follow my friends to Wall Street. The
appeal of Bali “business” trips, creative freedom and building a brand of my own was hard to ignore.’
And now Senja comes full circle. With its sights set on the UK, the brand has just launched in Harry’s hometown of Stamford –available exclusively at White Ginger, just opposite The George hotel. It’s a return not just to roots, but to the place where the story quietly began.
The White Ginger brand is 14 years old and the Stamford Store turns 5 this year!

redefining lingerie at 6 mill street
Maison Six is a brand new lingerie boutique on Oakham’s Mill Street, where owner, Laura Treadwell, is determined to offer ladies a nurturing, welcoming space to rediscover the joy of buying lingerie
words: amander meade
ANYONE who has found themselves hot, flustered and overwhelmed in a tiny fitting room surrounded by discarded hangers whilst shopping for new underwear will be delighted to hear that Laura Treadwell is offering her customers a completely different experience at her new lingerie boutique, Maison Six, in Oakham.
Laura’s philosophy is simple – to incorporate a feeling of selfcare, a relaxed atmosphere, time to explore what really suits and a healthy dose of improved body confidence into lingerie shopping. ‘Most ladies wear a bra most of the time, but many of us don’t feel we can justify investing the time for ourselves to ensure we are completely happy with the style and fit. Often we just pick up the style and size we have always worn, and that’s something I’d like to change,’ she reports from the spacious and beautifully fitted showroom on Mill Street.
The Range
The range at Maison Six includes separates and sets in understated neutrals or pretty pastels for mixing and matching this summer –
ideal for wearing under lighter-coloured clothing but all carefully chosen for style and those extra details designed to make the wearer feel special and more confident. Suppliers include Fantasie, Simone Perele, Elomi, Empreinte and Wacoal. Nightwear and loungewear in cotton, silk, satin and bamboo so versatile it could easily be worn on the beach, with brands including Peachaus, is also available.
‘I want every lady to feel comfortable coming to browse in the shop, whatever their age, body shape or lifestyle,’ explains Laura.
‘There is no judgement here, just the determination to help every lady buy underwear that suits and fits them well in a supportive, private environment. We have ranges in all sizes, beginning at £39 for a beautiful bra, as well as more luxurious items, and prices are all clearly marked to help cater to every budget and taste.’
A fully trained fitter, Laura operates an appointments-only policy every Monday for anyone wanting a little more time and her undivided attention. From Tuesday to Saturday, customers are welcome to call in at any time, browse, try on and buy, with
Laura’s help, if required. ‘I hate the fact that women tend to focus on the things they don’t like about their bodies and often become distracted by these worries while standing in front of a mirror choosing lingerie. We are all different shapes and sizes, and I want to eliminate worries about body shape and concentrate instead on making every customer feel fabulous and entirely happy with their fit. I always encourage ladies to see how a bra looks and feels under their normal clothing. Under our clothing is where the difference a good fit makes really shines.
‘I aim to put the joy back into lingerie shopping’
‘I am also happy to open in the evenings for small groups of ladies who would like to enjoy a private shopping event with a glass of something cold and bubbly, with friends or family – perhaps before a holiday or a special occasion.’
Laura also offers a gift service where customers can log their sizing and style preferences so that partners or friends can call in and buy a gift with confidence. She even offers advice on looking after your lingerie, with a special range of gentle products designed for washing by hand to keep items looking their best for longer available at the boutique. There is also a lovely range of self-care products, including luxury bath salts and bath/body/massage oils from ecoconscious North Yorkshire brand Salt + Steam.
‘Maison Six is a safe and entirely private space for ladies to take their time, browse and buy with absolute confidence, whether they have a pram or a partner in tow,’ Laura tells me to finish. ‘I aim to put the joy back into lingerie shopping and to send every customer away relaxed, happy, confident and comfortable.’

WORDS: ALLY JOHNSON
JULY is the perfect time to bring the outside in – not in the form of muddy footprints or uninvited insects, mind you, but in a more curated and chlorophyll-filled kind of way.
Biophilic design is the fancy name for our age-old instinct to feel good around nature. It’s in our blood and at the very core of our being. Our Neolithic ancestors would no doubt be horrified to find themselves boxed into beige rooms with only a wilting vase of tulips for company, so it’s important we satisfy our inner caveman – for the sake of our sanity. We’re simply wired to feel better when we’re connected to nature. From lowering stress to boosting focus and mood, even a humble houseplant can work wonders for our wellbeing (as well as our aesthetics).
And no, it’s not just about plonking a peace lily on a shelf and calling it a day, although, frankly, I’ll take any excuse for a trip to Stamford Garden Centre (if only for the cake)! It’s about creatively
weaving nature into our living spaces – layering organic materials and nature inspired art and textiles as well as a few well-chosen leafy companions.
We may not all be blessed with an architect-designed biophilic eco home with a living wall and 20-foot windows, but whether you’ve a sun-drenched conservatory or just a windowsill with potential, here are some simple ways to turn your home into a summer sanctuary –hopefully minus the hay fever.
BELOW: This ‘Woodland Toile’ wallpaper by Sanderson provides an effortless botanical backdrop for fern prints in this cottage dining space by Ally. The bleached wood of the tabletop, jute placemats, natural rattan chair seats and faded terracotta tiled floor all contribute organic materials to bring nature into the scheme.
‘Even small swaps can add a sense of calm and authenticity’
BOTANICAL PATTERNS AND TEXTURES WITHIN A SINGLE
COLOUR OR NEUTRAL PALETTE. BALANCE IS KEY: LIFT DEEPER TONES WITH LIGHTER ONES, AND MIX FLOUNCY FLORALS OR BUSY PRINTS WITH SIMPLER PLAINS, STRIPES, CHECKS OR GEOMETRICS TO KEEP THINGS CALM AND CONSIDERED.
• Embracing natural, organic materials and textures at home can be genuinely transformative, and not just for the overall sense of quality and craftsmanship. There’s something deeply grounding about being surrounded by materials that come from the earth. So steer away from the synthetic and lean into the tactile charm of nature. Think jute or sisal rugs; rattan, wicker or bamboo furniture and accents – perfect for baskets, lighting or even headboards. Opt for solid, characterful woods with visible grain – the more knots and quirks, the better – and soften your space with layers of 100% cotton and linen, whether that’s in breezy curtains, cushions or bedding. Even small swaps, such as a stoneware vase or hand-thrown ceramics, can add a sense of calm and authenticity.
Pair these earthy textures with pretty floral or botanical prints for that all-important biophilic dopamine hit, whether it’s in wallpaper, cushions, curtains or upholstery; this is a brilliant way to blur the lines between indoors and out. Start with a hero print that gives you that little flutter of excitement, and build from there.
TERRARIUM THERAPY: NATURE IN A GLASS
I have my fair share of faux houseplants at home, mostly because I struggle to keep anything alive – children and resident hamster thankfully excluded! While I love the fresh pop of green they bring – and you can get some brilliantly convincing ones – nothing quite beats the real thing. In my ongoing quest to bring the outside in, and improve my plant-parenting credentials, I recently paid a visit to Stamford Botanics, which is bursting with botanical treasures and greenfingered inspiration.
Founded by Leonie on a mission to make nature feel joyful and accessible, Stamford Botanics encourages everyone to weave more greenery into their homes, whether through houseplants, handmade terrariums or just top-notch advice on how not to murder your maidenhair fern. The ethos here aligns perfectly with biophilic design: nurturing a deeper connection to nature, indoors.
To put all this greenery goodness into practice, I joined one of their fantastic Terrarium Workshops. Leonie’s warmth, humour and passion were infectious, and it was a wonderfully hands-on experience, layering drainage, soil, moss and plants into a glass jar to build my very own miniature ecosystem. I may not be naturally green-fingered, but it was genuinely therapeutic, and I’ve grown oddly protective of my new leafy baby since I brought it home.
My lovely new terrarium now lives contentedly in a sunny corner of my kitchen, next to our aluminium bifold doors (recently installed by Classic Stamford), which are now truly earning their keep for indoor/ outdoor living as the weather warms up. Lounge chair loose cushion covers in Christopher Farr’s iconic ‘Lost & Found’ (made by Sew Now, Stamford), paired with a whimsical botanical print cushion by Sanderson, bring personality and freshness in shades of green, mirroring the garden.
ABOVE: Ally at the Terrarium Workshop at Stamford Botanics on St Paul’s Street.
BELOW: Art is another brilliant way to evoke a deeper connection to nature indoors – landscapes and botanical prints can instantly mirror the outdoor world and enhance that biophilic feel. Vintage Mid-Century paintings, such as the ones below, are a charming way to add warmth and character, evoking that nostalgia of carefree, countryside summers even on rainy days.

Darron Evans and his wife Lisa have owned and operated All Water Solutions Ltd, a bespoke plumbing and design company based in Uppingham, for many years, and altogether have over 40 years’ experience in the business. Still speaking with as much passion for their work as when the company newly launched, Darron and Lisa tell Amander Meade what continues to make their business unique in the region
WITH decades of experience under his belt, Darron is a fully qualified WRAS plumber, an awardwinning heating engineer (through the Institute of Plumbing) and is approved as officially gas and water safe. Although the All Water Solutions team does not exclusively work on bathroom/wet room projects, they do specialise in those areas and can accommodate the quirkiest of projects with vast experience in achieving seamless results in listed homes and period properties as well as more contemporary buildings.
Describing his attitude towards his work as ‘foot to the pedal’, Darron clearly possesses a boundless enthusiasm, and his involvement in every stage of every project ensures the level of customer service and quality assurance that have become synonymous with his company name. He explains: ‘Our service begins as soon as a client makes that initial first enquiry or pops
into the showroom. Lisa runs our showroom and is always present personally during opening hours. She will ascertain what kind of job is required, from replacing a tap or refreshing an ensuite bathroom to a major renovation.’
Lisa is also the ‘creative eye’ on the team, steering clients through the myriad styles and designs available in her extensive ‘library’ of brochures and gallery of images. At this point, arrangements are usually made for Darron to meet the client either in the showroom or on site to discuss the project in more detail.
‘I use a computer-aided-design software package to show clients what might be achieved in their home within their budget. We then explore all ideas, narrowing down options until we settle on a design that works beautifully for the client and sits well within the rest of their home. As a passionate perfectionist, my aim is always to provide a “turnkey” service.’
The All Water Solutions service is inclusive of all plumbing, heating, tiling, small building works, flooring carpentry, joinery,
‘The
plastering and electrical requirements, with Darron project managing from the design stage all the way through to completion.
‘In this region, I am not aware of any other home improvement business owner who is involved in person from design to completion.
I am on site working alongside my team daily, making sure there are no delays, problem solving in the most efficient manner and paying extremely close attention to the small details that can make or break a bathroom design until the customer is happy to sign off. I believe that is what makes All Water Solutions unique.’
With transparency and honesty at the heart of his philosophy, beginning with a 25 per cent deposit, Darron requests an interim payment during the work, with final payment on completion, which secures peace of mind and ensures customer satisfaction.
‘No two jobs are the same for us, and our repeat customers know that we don’t offer prescriptive installation. Each design is tailored to specific requirements, the property and the wish list. Each project offers up its own challenges and opportunities, and each client appreciates the attention to detail and careful emphasis on service that we bring to the work. We take into account not only the limitations of each building but also the client’s personal taste. We do trade in quality and won’t fit inferior fixtures. Neither will we overpromise or give assurances we can’t deliver.’
Dealing with tried-and-tested British and international suppliers, such as Hansgrohe, Matki, Sottini, Kudos, Sottini and Utopia to name but a few, Darron and Lisa report that wet rooms continue to be popular – especially as we are all living longer, ‘although nobody wants a wet room that looks like it belongs in a 1970s’ care home,’ says Darron. The use of vibrant colour in bathroom areas is an emerging trend and technology has revolutionised many fixtures including smart showers, illuminated mirrors and LED lighting. In flooring, the new-style luxury vinyl tiles are recommended and are very popular both for their appearance and durability.
Trends come and go,’ concludes Darron, ‘but when it comes to fitting bathrooms, customers still want a room that looks great and operates exactly as it should for a long time. Great service from a skilled and respectful team will never go out of fashion and that’s what we provide – every time.’

QKS can do much more than just add a room to your home, as Clare & Nicholas Rudd-Jones discovered when they visited a recent project in
Bourne
– a home renovation with the absolute ‘wow’ factor
WE WERE GREETED WARMLY at the door by the home owner and as we walked across the threshold we saw a well-appointed home with lots of charm. But when we walked through to the back of the house, we were completely bowled over by the amount of exquisite new space created, more than doubling the footprint of the ground floor.
The client told us: ‘It was a choice, really, between moving or transforming what we had, and we hired an architect who was able to envision what was possible and practical. We had heard great things about QKS Inspirational Spaces, especially the quality of their work, and they were the first port of call when we wanted to get going with the work. Ashley (Woodman) looked after us brilliantly from start to finish, and we never regretted our decision.
‘Most projects of this scale would typically mean moving out for a few months, but we didn’t want to have to do that, as that would have been disruptive for the family. QKS found a way of keeping
the house operational by knocking out the back, sealing it off from the main house, adding a temporary kitchen at the front and gaining access for all the heavy materials through the garage on the side.
‘What we were after was a space that had the “wow” factor and, of course, could also meet our needs for the space – cooking (both indoors and outdoors), relaxing, entertaining, staying fit, accommodating our two dogs and integrating the garden space. Quite a tall order really!’
The result is remarkable. We entered first through the kitchen (supplied by sister company QKS Kitchens), which is in a contemporary classic style, with two ovens, a steam oven and a sous vide (great for steaks). There is also a Japanese Teppanyaki plate, as the owners are keen cooks and especially enjoy cooking Japanese and Indian food.
Then there is the lounge area, looking out over the garden, with a massive TV screen for leisure. Notable features are the fabulous
folding doors that open up completely to bring the outside in, and the porcelain tiling that continues seamlessly from the inside to the outside, perfectly integrating the two spaces.
To the right is a stunning bar and, beyond that, through fully retractable folding doors, there is an indoor cooking area for outside cooking. complete with Wolf BBQ, mobile Gozney pizza oven and an outdoor smoker, sourced by Bakehouse. Commercial extraction had to be added to this space to make it safety compliant. Meanwhile, to the left of the lounge are two spacious utility rooms, one for dog paraphernalia (lucky dogs!) and the other with all the washing services.
Finally, there’s an unexpected extra room that houses a small gym, with weights, treadmill and, most impressive, a sauna. It’s fantastic! Keeping fit is important for the owners, as they enter many ultra marathons in this country and abroad.
We then stepped outside to take in the signature of the extension, a stunning ziggurat-style pattern made with zinc wrap that creates absolute distinctiveness for the whole building.
We asked the owners whether they were pleased with the service that QKS Inspirational Spaces provided. ‘Absolutely,’ they empathically told us. ‘We have rather exacting standards, and they always met them. They have a wide skills set at QKS, which is impressive. And they keep to a timetable and were very responsive to additional requests.
‘As well as doing all the building work, they have a great team of specialists who add extra value – for example, the installation of a fabulous sound system throughout the house. And an expert who painstakingly installed the zinc outside, which took him four weeks of absolute dedication. He was really into his detail.’
The result? Oodles of space, oodles of style, and huge opportunities to really enjoy a great lifestyle.
Whatever you are looking for, QKS Inspirational Spaces can create a unique space that will truly inspire you and change the way you enjoy your home for good.

Today people are concerned about the impact of global warming and climate change. Many of us are trying to check where food and produce is coming from and the miles travelled. Have you thought about flowers in this way? Sue Lee and Jean Orpin have thoroughly enjoyed meeting some local flower growers and hope they encourage you to buy British
IN JULY 2011 Ask Leo wrote about Matthew Naylor, who was growing delphiniums at Moulton Seas End, near Spalding. He was ahead of the game in promoting environmentally friendly British flowers and since then, Matt and his cousin Chris Edgeley, have been busy keeping up with demand.
Naylor Flowers Ltd now grows 20 different flower crops on 700 acres and harvests tens of millions of stems each year. One of the first LEAF Marque-accredited flower farms, they have since invested in solar-powered coldstores and harvested rainwater. The business has even formed its own labour agency to support their 200-strong workforce.
You may have seen Matt and his farm on Marks and Spencer’s TV adverts last year and you can find their flowers in most major supermarkets in the UK. They also engage with the public through farm tours, school visits and pick-your-own events. Matt has held several positions on farming related charities and continues as a forward-thinking representative of the farming world, not least as a long-time supporter, and now member, of Flowers from the Farm.
Flowers often have a high carbon footprint, as they are imported from countries many miles away using cooling agents to keep them cool and fresh. They are also sprayed with chemicals to preserve them on their long journey and to prevent insects being transported from abroad. Eleven years ago, Gill Hodgson, the founder of Flowers from the Farm, created a plot on the family farm in Yorkshire to grow British flowers and then encouraged others to do the same.
Today Flowers from the Farm, a not-for-profit association, has 1,000 members all growing British flowers. Some grow on a large scale to sell to supermarkets, but, more often, growers sell to local florists or direct to customers. Flowers from the Farm provided all the flowers in Westminster Abbey for the King’s coronation. All the growers mentioned here are members of Flowers from the Farm and can be commissioned to provide seasonal flowers for weddings and special events. www.flowersfromthefarm.co.uk
When Barbara and her partner, Giles Godfrey, bought Keythorpe Hall in 2012, the 1.8-acre walled garden had become a jungle. It has taken hard work but it is now productive again. It provides quantities of vegetables and is home to 1,000 dahlias, three polytunnels of mixed blooms and many, many more flowers for cutting. Barbara has been a member of Flowers from the Farm for over 6 years and is enthusiastic about its benefits. Last year she was one of the members who contributed to the Coronation decorations. This year she grew irises for Chelsea. She points out that growing is only one third of the job. Another third is harvesting – labour intensive and hectic. Her two full-time employees are supplemented by WWOOFers (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms), who come from all over the world. They share family life, including meals, and get hands-on experience while helping with the harvest. Finally, there is selling, perhaps the most difficult third. Barbara emails a weekly availability list to customers who order online then collect themselves. Local people can also collect from the house on Fridays.

White Goose Flower Farm is based within a two-acre Victorian walled garden, its frameyard and south slip in Little Dalby, near Melton. Now in its second selling year, it is the passion of growers Fleur and Mark, who open it from mid-April to October, Friday, Saturday & Sunday 10am–4pm (or by appt). Visitors can stroll through the garden, pick their own flowers, buy bouquets, and experience the beauty and whimsical nature of British chemicalfree flowers. With chickens, peacocks and white geese, it’s an absolute dream. 07941 660745 | www.whitegooseflowers.com @whitegooseflowerfarm
LEFT: Vanessa Brown with some of her beautiful flowers.
Last year was Vanessa Brown’s first full season as a grower, harvesting from May till October, and in 2025 she is expanding. Beds around a large lawn proved good for cut flowers, and these have been augmented by slightly reducing the lawn and taking over most of the vegetable garden. An old barn, cleverly turned into a glass-roofed greenhouse, is where her flowers start out as seeds or cuttings. Its stone walls are efficient at keeping a moderate temperature.
Vanessa, who is appreciative of the support she has received by joining Flowers from the Farm, supplies local florists and flower bunches to Stamford Garden Centre, and if you have any kind of special occasion you can order a bucket filled with beautiful, seasonal flowers. Vanessa also offers a weekly subscription service (minimum 6 weeks – payable in advance) and she makes deliveries to the local Stamford area. Just contact Vanessa to find out more about which areas she covers. You will also find her at The Stalls Market, Stamford Meadows on Saturday 19 July.

Emma and her husband bought Old Oak Farm, an old vineyard of 7.5 acres planted with 1,000 vines in Preston, Rutland. The vineyard has now been revived, and Emma has decided to diversify. The farm has become a venue for weddings and an area, originally for chickens, made into a vegetable garden and flower growing area. It is surrounded by netting to stop the deer entering the garden, and this also gives shelter for flowers such as echinacea, zinnias, artichokes and dahlias.
In the attractive, recently built barn Emma holds workshops using seasonal flowers to make bouquets, etc. Workshops include refreshments, and appointments can be made to pick your own flowers followed by tea and cake. Emma very recently joined Flowers from the Farm and is benefitting from the connections with other members.

Helen first encountered Flowers from the Farm at Chelsea Flower Show seven or eight years ago and it inspired her to make use of her own interest in gardening. She lives on a farm in Great Casterton, in Rutland, and decided to take over the vegetable garden and start growing flowers. She grows a variety of flowers that bloom from spring to autumn and makes wreaths in the winter. Since the RHS banned floral foam (oasis), less-formal arrangements are more popular for weddings and events so a bucket of seasonal flowers bought direct from a grower like Helen is an attractive alternative and certainly more environmentally friendly. Helen takes on commissions for weddings well in advance and will advise on seasonal flowers and colours then can grow especially for an event. Sometimes she also arranges flowers but is more than happy just to provide the flowers for ‘Doit-yourself’ customers. She explained that if she is short of a particular flower or colour she contacts other members of Flowers from the Farm to help out. She has enjoyed meeting up for social events and now gives advice herself to newcomers.

Nicholas Rudd-Jones met with Colin Ward, founder of Live Promotions, one of the UK’s largest consumer event organisers and live music promoters, to chat about his life and career
IMET COLIN in his delightful 17th-century home in Uffington, just to the east of Stamford, where he has lived with his wife Daphne for many years, brought up a family, entertained many grandchildren and enjoyed a busy social life. Colin is a man full of energy and enthusiasms; he is clearly very content with the business he has built over the last 50 years, but still hungry for his next success.
‘I was born and raised in Spalding and went to Spalding Grammar, then the Lincoln School of Art, studying what was grandly referred to as Industrial Art – otherwise known as printing! I aspired to work either as a designer or in the music industry. At the time, I was the drummer in a band called Sounds Force Five, and we were fortunate enough to be making waves in the local music scene at venues including the area’s RAF camps, and so on.’
‘My first lucky break came in 1967, when our band was invited to play at the Barbecue 67 Festival at the Tulip Bulb Auction Hall in Spalding. The promoter felt that he needed a top local band to make sure the punters came to an otherwise unknown line-up.
‘Well, the “unknown line-up” just happened to include the likes of Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and The Move. The crowd numbered around 6,000. It was the first British rock festival, really, although nobody knew it was at the time.
ABOVE LEFT: Katherine Jenkins in concert at Sandringham House for the 2022 Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. ABOVE RIGHT: Colin & Daphne Ward.
When did you move to the area? I was born in Spalding in 1949 and have been a resident of Uffington for the last 20 years.
What do you like most about the region? I just love Stamford. I often say to my wife when we are coming home via the A1: ‘Is it straight home, or shall we go for a spin around town first?’
Favourite spot? There is a wall by the river in Wharf Road in Stamford where I can often spot a kingfisher whilst I’m waiting for the traffic lights.
Favourite pub/restaurant/café? Well, you can’t really beat the courtyard of The George in Stamford on a sunny summer’s day.
Favourite pastime? Collecting vintage drums – one of my favourites is an old American drum kit, Slingerland, as played by, amongst others, Buddy Rich and Jean-Paul Gaster.
Favourite local cause? Anna’s Hope, the leading children’s brain tumour charity. The work that Carole Hughes and all the volunteers do is simply remarkable.
‘It was this taste for playing music and seeing a gig really take off that inspired me to start out on my career path – and I have never really looked back.
‘But at this early stage I was happy to do anything to make ends meet – I worked as a window cleaner and as a signwriter amongst other jobs. I think this willingness to try anything has stayed with me in the world of music promotions. And I am always thinking about how something could be done better or differently.’
Early Career
‘I was torn between music and pursuing a career in art and design, so I ended up working in Peterborough and London as an artistic buyer, commissioning art for EMAP. Then I started to do events including the Isle of Man TT and the Chelsea Flower Show; this was my first taste of life as a promoter; needless to say, one which quickly began to appeal!
‘It was a good job, but one that was fraught with frustration too. I regularly quit the job, to the extent that it became an in-joke between my wife, Daphne, and me. She and I would be sitting in the car, and the Managing Director would tap on the window asking me to come back into the office and come back to work!’
How did you begin your own events company, Live Promotions?
‘Sometime around that point, a friend asked for help promoting a folk music event, which neatly ensured all of my interests came together; an ability to be creative, working with talented musicians and to play a part in organising an event. There was a lack of good event venues and good music acts in the area, so circumstances, I felt, were right, and we began Live Promotions in 1972.
‘I grew a great team around me, and we began to host events at Boston’s Assembly Rooms, local cinemas or theatres, and venues as far afield as London, with acts across the genres of jazz, country music and pop music. Our events featured well-known names such as Acker Bilk, Stéphane Grappelli and Syd Lawrence.
‘But my first big break in broader events came when I hopped on the train to London and knocked on the doors of various promotions agencies. Eventually I hit lucky and was commissioned to run the launch of German beer brand Löwenbräu in the UK –we were on the road for three years, rolling the brand out through a number of regional events.
LEFT: Colin at Sandringham House for a Car Pageant organised by Live Promotions.
‘I have so many good memories, but high points include putting on the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 at Burghley House, and the Queen’s 2022 Platinum Jubilee weekend celebrations at Sandringham House, starring Katherine Jenkins’
‘From the contacts I made on this job, I then got a commission to work with Austin Rover, which had recently been merged, and so got into the lucrative auto events world. That got us to Donington Park, and lots of high-performance racing cars, etc.
‘I remember around that time having a drink with my brother, who was a truck driver, and he said to me, “Why don’t you do something like that for us boys?” – and so Truckfest was born. This quickly became the biggest get-together in the lorry-driving calendar. It is now our biggest brand, taking place at nine venues across the UK each year, including, of course, the Peterborough Showground.’
Can you pick out any particular high points along the way?
‘I have so many good memories, but high points include putting on the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 at Burghley House, and the Queen’s 2022 Platinum Jubilee weekend celebrations at Sandringham House, starring Katherine Jenkins.
‘I have worked with many wonderful stars. Those that live long in the memory include Billy Ocean, Katherine Jenkins and Fiona Bruce, who as well as being charming is the ultimate professional –word perfect and willing to work in all weathers!’
And where does the entrepreneurial streak come from?
‘My dad was a labourer; my mum worked in the Smedley’s canning factory outside Spalding. They were always happy for me to find my own way.
‘Actually, I like to think that something was passed down from an ancestor who had worked on the Manchester Ship Canal. Once the job was finished, he toured around the UK giving talks in pubs and clubs about how this great feat of engineering had been achieved. He made a living from it, so he must have known how to put on a good show!’
And the future?
‘I’d love Live Promotions to continue as a family business, but I’m not planning to give up any time soon! Why should I?! I never lose that feeling after a great show: “Boy, that was fun. When can we do that again?” So, for the future: more acts, more events and more happy punters.’
And then Colin checked his phone. ‘Great’, he said, ‘the weather forecast is looking fine for Saturday (the tribute band Ultimate Coldplay were playing at Rutland Water at an event organised by Live Promotions).‘In many ways this job is like being a farmer,’ he reflected, ‘always watching the weather and wondering how bountiful the harvest – or in my case the audience – will be!’
Step into modern leadership, your team will thank you.

Hidden in plain sight, 186 Gwydir Street in Cambridge looks like any other terraced house, and yet, venture within and you will discover a lovingly preserved time capsule, showcasing the life and work of Victorian decorative artist David Parr. Rebecca Downey pays a visit and learns a new craft in the studio next door
‘The house is run by a charitable trust and is open to visitors wishing to explore the fascinating example of Arts and Crafts workmanship layered with 20th-century social history’
DAVID PARR bought the property in 1886 and spent the next 40 years transforming the interior using all the skills of his trade producing handpainted schemes and stained glass to create a uniquely decorated family home for his wife, Mary, and their three children. Following his death in 1927, the home was preserved initially by his wife, and later by his granddaughter, Elsie Palmer, who moved into the house at the age of 12 and lived there for over 85 years.
Today the house is run by a charitable trust and is open to visitors wishing to explore the fascinating example of Arts and Crafts workmanship layered with 20th-century social history. The house was first open to the public in 2019. Alongside tours of the interior, visitors are able to attend talks, screenings, enrol in a variety of workshops from bargello to button making (held in the adjacent terraced building at 184), explore the climate-resilient and biodiversity-supporting gardens, discover further resources in relation to the Arts and Crafts Movement, and peruse a delightful museum shop selling David Parr-inspired items, unique hand-crafted gifts and cards by local artists.
Born into a working-class family in Cambridge in 1854, David Parr found his life changed when he began an apprenticeship as a decorative artist with Cambridge firm FR Leach & Sons at the age of 17. His career spanned 50-plus years, involved painting schemes for prestigious commissions in stately homes, colleges and churches, created by some of the best designers and architects in the country, including George Frederick Bodley, William Morris and Charles Eamer Kempe. David decorated his own terraced home on Gwydir Street, applying the same skill and attention to detail as with his professional work. He kept meticulous records of how the house was restructured and decorated, and his notebooks and tools of the trade are preserved to this day.
The Arts and Crafts Movement emerged as a reaction to the industrialisation and mass production that dominated the Victorian era. It emphasised the value of handcrafted work and the notion that beauty and excellence in design could be accessible to all of society and daily life. In addition, it promoted the idea that the process of making something by hand was valuable for the maker’s wellbeing and for society as a whole, which is why David Parr’s House is the ideal establishment to share the skills of renowned professional creatives and host a variety of workshops including millinery, printing, textile jewellery, ceramic pinch pots, French beaded flowers and decorative copper tiles, to name a few.
I attended a dry point etching workshop with artist and print maker Susie Turner, a graduate in Fine Art Printmaking from Cambridge School of Art, with an MA in Visual Arts & Printmaking at Camberwell College of Art. After a brief introduction to the process, our group of 10 sketched illustrations inspired by David Parr, or organic items such as shells, or flowers from the garden, before transferring our images via the intaglio method using a dry point needle to scratch the surface of a plastic plate.
After a spot of lunch in the garden and an informative and story-driven tour of the house, we inked and printed our creations experimenting with colour and texture learning the methods of ‘à la poupeé’ (printing with two or more colours) and ‘chine-collé’ (bonding the image with tissue paper). Most of us achieved at least four prints, and Susie’s insights and calm tutelage left us all enthused for more. I returned home clutching materials and equipment lists, stockists, suppliers and recommended reading, but above all a sense of accomplishment at learning a new skill and for taking the time to observe the beauty in the simplest forms. As David Parr illustrates so exquisitely on his drawing room wall: Find tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stones and good in everything.
OPPOSITE: charming memorabilia in the house.
David Parr House (184 & 186 Gwydir Street, Cambridge CB1 2LW) is a 10-minute walk from Cambridge station or a 20-minute walk from the city centre. Tours of the house run on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (lasting one hour with timed entry; must be booked in advance; £15 or £17.50 with donation & gift aid). Guided tours (1 hour 30 minutes) run Saturdays at 2.30pm and the last Saturday of every month all day (£20, or £22.50 with donation & gift aid). We take a look at recent developments at Brooke Priory, Rutland’s leading co-educational, independent prep school
Rutland’s leading independent prep school for boys and girls aged 2–11, is delighted to announce exciting developments for the upcoming academic year. Nestled in the heart of Oakham, the school continues to grow while maintaining the nurturing, familyfocused environment that makes it so special.
From September 2025, the school is proud to be expanding to a two-form entry in Forms IV, V and VI. This growth allows the school to offer even more children the benefits of small class sizes, where every pupil is known, supported and challenged to reach their full potential.
Adding to the excitement, the school officially opened its brandnew adventure playground at the beginning of June. The joy was palpable, as children from Kindergarten to Form VI explored the new equipment, embracing the fun and challenges it brings to playtime.
Brooke Priory’s pupils enjoy a rich and varied co-curricular programme, with exceptional opportunities in sport, music and the arts. Whether it’s on the sports field, in the music room or exploring new interests, every child is encouraged to discover their passions and talents.
Among the highlights of life at Brooke Priory are the much-loved Welly Days. Each term, pupils head to the school’s stunning 20acre original site to immerse themselves in outdoor learning. From hands-on science days and river walks to tree climbing and nature exploration, Welly Days inspire curiosity, resilience and a deep connection with the natural world.
Brooke Priory has proven pathways to both Independent and State senior schools, helping find the right school for each individual child. Brooke Priory children are always well sought after, and their teachers are proud to see them demonstrate Brooke Priory’s school values both at the school and beyond. Brooke Priory’s relationship with Oakham School has developed this year with an opportunity to secure an early place during Form V with a new assessment pathway.
Prospective families are warmly invited to visit Brooke Priory School and experience the vibrant, caring community that makes the school truly unique. Please do come and see what makes Brooke Priory the perfect place for your child to thrive.

WHATEVER YOUR SUMMER HOLDS, WE HOPE THIS GUIDE HELPS YOU FIND SOME EASY WINS, LITTLE WONDERS, AND JUST A FEW MAGICAL MEMORIES ALONG THE WAY.
HAPPY ADVENTURING!
Here are some fun and (mostly) free activities for little explorers. Can you complete all the missions before the end of summer? Remember to be respectful to nature and only take small samples from living plants or try to find fallen materials.
Place leaves under a sheet of paper and rub crayons over them to reveal intricate patterns. Fold fresh leaves and flowers between two pieces of calico or linen and gently hammer the surface to create a beautiful print.
Wrap a strip of tape (sticky side out; not too tight!) around your child’s wrist and collect leaves, petals and feathers to create a wearable nature collage.
In an egg box, use felt tip or paint to colour the base of each section. Can you collect something for all six colours?
Lie on the grass and spot the amazing creatures and intriguing shapes in the sky. Do they tell a story?
Gather smooth stones and let the kids paint them with vibrant designs or messages. Leave them along trails for others to find.
Collect sticks and decorate them with coloured pipe cleaners, ribbons, leaves, and flowers to craft magical wands.
Draw a map of your backyard or local park and hide ‘treasures’ for a fun-filled hunt.
Sometimes the best adventures begin right outside your doorstep.
Always the very saddest moment for pet owners is when the time comes to say goodbye to our beloved companions. Amander Meade spoke to Nina Cooke, whose company, Faithful Farewell, aims to soften the blow of parting, with home visits
NINA began her career as an army vet before pursuing a career in emergency medicine. She still works as a small animal emergency vet alongside running Faithful Farewell. Nina has completed extensive training in peaceful euthanasia.
What made you decide to branch out into this specific area?
Whilst at my regular job, I was receiving many requests for home visits. Sadly, if I leave the practice, it puts someone else’s pet at risk, so I had to refuse. It was heart breaking hearing the disappointment in an owner’s voice, knowing they had no option but to bring their pet to the practice. Some vets do offer a home euthanasia service but, sadly, most do not. I plan visits around my practice work so I can be completely focused on the owner and their pet.
How important is a peaceful goodbye to pet owners?
For some owners it is incredibly important. The vets is often a place of stress and anxiety, and owners don’t want their pet’s final moments to be somewhere they don’t like. It can feel clinical, unfamiliar and uncomfortable, unlike home. Often journey time, and the logistical issues of transporting large, immobile animals, plus a busy waiting room, can cause further stress.
What difference does being at home make to pets?
For animals, the stress is removed completely. They don’t have to step out of their favourite bed and often don’t notice the injection, falling asleep surrounded by the people they love. It’s a completely different interaction from in the clinic. I can also work with most aggressive and highly anxious animals, which usually involves a prescribed oral sedative for the owner to give before I arrive.
What typically is involved?
The appointment typically lasts around an hour. We start with a sedative injection, which most pets don’t notice at all. Over the next 10 to 30 minutes, they gradually drift off. During this time the family can gather around and comfort them, while I can be as present or as scarce as they wish – I have the time and space to be flexible. Once the pet is sleeping soundly, they receive the final injection, after which they pass away peacefully.
Do you offer follow up services?
Yes. I can arrange for communal or individual cremation. I take the body away and then return the ashes within two weeks. I have personally visited the crematorium I use and was very impressed by the level of care, attention to detail and respect they demonstrated. Some owners prefer to make their own arrangements.
What has the initial feedback been like?
People invariably say, ‘it feels odd saying thank you for this… but thank you.’ In such an emotionally charged moment, people often find it very difficult to speak at all. I have received some incredibly beautiful messages of thanks that will stay with me forever.
What would you advise pet owners wrestling with a decision? Whilst only the owner can make that difficult decision, I will always try to guide them. I’d invite them to just reach out and chat to me. There is no commitment, and talking it through can add some perspective. I have a guide on my website with a quality-of-life questionnaire, which many owners have found helpful.
How do you manage the sadness involved?
I used to find euthanasia utterly soul-destroying, and it is still never easy. The human-animal bond is a powerful relationship to break, no matter how justified the decision. Since starting Faithful Farewell, I now have a sense of calm and beauty intertwining the grief, and I am humbled to be entrusted with such a poignant moment. Knowing that I have brought compassion and peace at such a difficult time is very comforting.
Nina suggests WhatsApp or voicemail messages are best, as she cannot always answer the telephone. She will return calls and messages as soon as possible.

Each month, the international makeup artist and founder of Daniel Sandler Cosmetics, who is based in our region, answers your beauty and skincare questions. This month, he focuses on blusher
Quite a few years back, a beauty blogger named me the Patron Saint of Blusher, and around the same time another beauty blogger referred to me as the King of Blusher, both of which make me immensely proud and grateful. Why did they call me that? Well, it’s because my unique little bottles of Watercolour blush started the craze for liquid formulas. They’re wonderfully long-lasting and ultra-natural looking. A bit of liquid colour on cheeks immediately makes us look healthier, so this month I’d like to share my straightforward blusher advice with you.
• Fair skin looks best with cool-toned pinks such as baby pink, lilac or soft rose. Avoid blush shades with strong orange undertones, as they can look harsh, but soft peach is flattering, especially if you have naturally pink cheeks.
• Medium skin suits peach, rosy pinks, delicate brick shades or nude-leaning pinks.
• Tan skin complements nude, bright pink or deep peach/ terracotta tones.
• Deep skin can pull off bright, bold shades like reds, deep brick shades, hot pinks, berries, plum or rich, rosy browns.
• Cool undertones look best with blush shades that have a blue-based pink or fuchsia.
• Warm undertones suit coral, peach or brown shades for a natural look, or fuchsia for a pop of colour.
If you’re in a bit of a pickle not knowing which shade would suit best, then please head over to my website and check out my Shade Finder quiz that helps you find your perfect shade online.
• Apples of the cheeks: the areas that rise when you smile.
• Blend upwards and outwards: this helps create a natural, lifted look and avoids a harsh or flat appearance.
• Towards the temples: blending towards the temples allows the colour to fade softly and adds definition, enhancing cheekbones.
• Curved U-shaped motion: a gentle, curved application helps create a natural, youthful flush while blending softly.
• Consider your face shape: different face shapes may require slight adjustments in placement to enhance specific features and balance proportions. For example, heart-shaped faces might benefit from a curved blush application from the temple to the bottom of the cheekbone.
• Slightly below the eye: I find that applying blush slightly below the lower lashline brightens the eye colour.
• Avoid applying too low, as this will make the face appear wider, older and saggy.
Liquid blush is usually highly pigmented, so you don’t need much to achieve a lovely result. You can use whichever method you prefer – a brush, a sponge or even your fingers. My Watercolours work with any method, including an airbrush. I recently launched my summer must-have Watercolour blush range, the Riviera Collection. This collection features four stunning, limited-edition shimmer shades for eyes, lips, and cheeks. Perfect for sunny holidays and a golden tan.
Blush
You can still use blush if you have redness in your skin, but it’s important to choose the right shade. Instead of using pink or red, which will amplify redness, opt for muted shades such as peach, brown or terracotta. These colours can help create a flattering flush without making the redness more noticeable.
Just a side note, dear readers… if any of you are fed up with having red, flushed cheeks – like me – you might be interested to know that I’m having a course of Broadband Light Therapy, called Sciton BBL Hero to zap away my high colour, by an aesthetic expert I’ve known for over 20 years, Natalie Godefroy, in Market Harborough; I wouldn’t trust anyone else! Clare Rudd-Jones went to visit Elegant Smiles, a beautiful, newly equipped dental clinic near Bath Row and the Meadows in Stamford, offering expert general and cosmetic dentistry, implants and orthodontics in calming surroundings
STAMFORD’S DENTAL LANDSCAPE has been revitalised by the arrival of Elegant Smiles, a state-ofthe-art, owner-led private practice delivering advanced treatments in a welcoming, patient-centred setting. Conveniently located near the town centre on Castle Dyke, right next to Bath Row (with plenty of parking on the doorstep), this beautifully designed new clinic opened in April. Its launch extends the reach of the award-winning Elegant Smiles Group, which is well established across Lincolnshire, with clinics in Grantham, Spalding, Heckington and Lincoln.
Under the expert leadership of Principal Dentist, Dr Israr Razaq, the Stamford team offers the full spectrum of dental care – from routine check-ups and hygienist appointments to advanced cosmetic and restorative treatments. The clinic also offers a full suite of facial aesthetic services, including dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle treatments. ‘It’s a huge advantage to be able to carry out advanced treatments right here in the clinic – without needing to refer patients to Peterborough or Cambridge,’ notes Dr Razaq.
Personalised care is central to the practice’s ethos. Dr Razaq explains: ‘We want to create a really lovely, calm, welcoming environment for patients while maintaining the high standards of care we’re known for at Elegant Smiles – and for which we’ve won awards.’ There is a wealth of experience on the team – Associate Dentist Dr Jackie Belsham, for example, brings over 30 years of experience and is renowned for her skill at putting nervous patients at ease.
The contemporary, tranquil surroundings have been thoughtfully designed to help soothe even the most anxious patients. A tour of the clinic confirms the impression: bright, light and smartly
renovated, it features cutting-edge equipment and a calming atmosphere. There’s a strong focus not just on patient care, but on nurturing the team too – with ongoing training and development opportunities across the group. Very impressive.
Keeping pace with the latest in digital dentistry, Elegant Smiles uses iTero scanning and the latest CBCT imaging technology to ensure exceptional precision in diagnosis and treatment planning. Among the standout services is the award-winning Invisalign clear aligner system, which offers discreet orthodontic solutions for both adults and teenagers. For those seeking to enhance their smile, professional teeth whitening achieves natural, long-lasting results, while cosmetic options such as E.max veneers offer further possibilities for transformation. The practice also offers dental implants, including the revolutionary All-On-4 system, which provides a full arch of fixed teeth in a single day – eliminating the need for traditional dentures and restoring confidence with speed and ease. The glowing reviews online speak for themselves.
Whether you’re looking for routine dental care or dreaming of a complete smile makeover, Elegant Smiles is set to become a trusted name in Stamford’s healthcare community. Flexible membership plans are available, with benefits such as discounted treatments and global emergency assistance. Makeup artist Rebecca Chantrell shares some lovely summer product ideas to suit all budgets, from tanning to holiday scents
LIGHTWEIGHT FACIAL SUNSCREEN
Finding a brilliant lightweight suncream that doesn’t feel sticky, greasy or make you look too shiny is like finding a fabulous pair of jeans. Here are two that tick all the boxes as both have a high SPF and UVA/UVB rating:
£££ Ultra Violette (Range starts at £32)
A brand born in Australia, I feel they really have a handle on sun protection. The whole range is a fusion of very skin-friendly ingredients and skin-safe technology, so the formulas are excellent. They do a few styles to suit different skin types or texture preferences.
£ Garnier Ambre Solaire Over Makeup Super UV Face Protection Mist SPF50+ (£13 for 75ml) This aerosol spray sun lotion is refreshing and clever. Simply spray all over the face either before or after makeup (perfect if you have forgotten to apply before makeup).
DAILY SELF TAN YOU CAN WASH OFF
Probably one of my all time favourite beauty hacks. Perfect for a quick, easy, streak-free instant tan. Minimal prep work is involved – simply apply using a soft mitt to areas on show. No need to wait for it to develop… just let it dry and go.
£££ St. Tropez Instant Glow Body Bronzer (£15 for 100ml) I love St. Tropez on my naturally fair skin. It creates the perfect shade without it being obvious that I have tan on.
£ Rimmel Sunshimmer Instant Self Tan (£6.99 for 125ml) A cult early 2000s’ product that is still going strong. A great price for something you will wash off at the end of the day.
SUMMER SKINCARE
During summer months, the skin can be susceptible to pigmentation and sun damage due to higher amounts of UV rays. One of the best ingredients proven to help brighten and reduce this is Vitamin C. I like these two:
£££ Medik8 C-TETRA With a seriously high dose of Vitamin C, this range packs a punch. It is highly effective and has lots of research and science to back up Medik8’s bold claims.
£ The Body Shop Vitamin C (from £15) This range is gentle but effective in brightening. It’s a firm customer favourite.
HOLIDAY SCENTS
Who doesn’t love a fresh summer scent? I tend to switch from my usual vanilla, woody, warm-based winter fragrances to something more fruity and floral. I love it when a perfume transports you to a place, occasion or holiday.
£££ Diptyque ILIO Eau de Toilette (£135) This fragrance is a long, hot summer in a bottle. It’s delightfully light but long lasting. A gorgeous medley of figs, bergamot and jasmine, a spray of this and you feel like you’re on holiday on a Greek island.
£ & Other Stories (Range starts at £18) These fragrances are at affordable prices and smell delicious. My two favourite summer scents are ‘Punk Bouquet’ and ‘Sicilian Sunrise’. They come in handy roll on sizes, which are fabulous for handbags or travelling and give you the opportunity to try the scent before committing to a larger bottle.
CREAM BRONZER
A cream bronzer is one of my top essentials in both my personal makeup bag and professional kit. A little goes a long way – apply with a large fluffy brush and buff over the face after foundation. Use on areas that naturally catch the sun.
£££ REFY Cream Bronzer (£18) This bronzer is super creamy, has lovely deep pigments that don’t look orange on the skin. The hundreds of 5-star reviews on the website agree that it’s a winner.
£ ELF Putty Bronzer (£9) An award-winning bronzer that is very popular with makeup artists. There’s a selection of colours to suit all skin tones. A little goes a very long way, so layer it up gradually with a brush.

Empowering you to take a positive and proactive approach to your skin, health and wellness. We can help you achieve radiant, healthy and fabulous skin
For over two decades, we have been at the forefront of a unique and forward-thinking approach to skin health and overall wellbeing. With a deep-rooted passion for blending advanced aesthetics with whole-body health, the philosophy at Elysia is simple — glowing, youthful skin starts from within. Nestled in a private and discreet setting, complete with convenient onsite parking, the clinic provides a haven for those seeking personalised, results-driven treatments.
To bring our philosophy to life we have invested in the most advanced technologies available. Many of these are not available unless you travel to London. With a comprehensive treatment menu designed to address a variety of skin, muscle, and textural concerns, clients have access to industry-leading solutions that deliver natural, noticeable results.
A personal favourite is MORPHEUS8 — the gold standard in needling combined with radio frequency. This powerful treatment works by tightening and lifting the skin while significantly improving overall texture and tone. MORPHEUS8 BODY tackles skin laxity, scarring, stretch marks, and even hand rejuvenation. The results are natural and transformative, restoring youthful firmness without the need for surgery.
Another innovative treatment taking the industry by storm is EMFACE — a ground-breaking technology designed to improve muscle tone and strength in the face and neck. While we often focus on toning our bodies, the importance of facial muscle strength has often been overlooked — until now. EMFACE works by simultaneously tightening the skin and
At ELYSIA we treat the person as a whole — not just the skin but the underlying factors that contribute to ageing, skin conditions, and overall wellness. We connect the dots between gut health, nutrition, and skin health, ensuring that results are not just skin-deep but deeply restorative. Whether you’re seeking solutions for acne, rosacea, pigmentation, or simply wish to maintain radiant, youthful skin, we are passionate about working with you to achieve your personal skin goals.
strengthening the muscles underneath, providing a natural lift and rejuvenation that enhances the overall facial structure. The latest advancement, EMFACE Eyes, now allows for targeted lifting around the eyes, addressing drooping brows, hollow under-eyes, and sagging eyelids — without needles or downtime.
Traditionally, most anti-ageing treatments have focused on the skin — smoothing, plumping, and resurfacing. However, true, long-lasting facial rejuvenation lies deeper within the muscle structure. As we age, we naturally lose volume and tone in muscles. This muscle atrophy can lead to sagging skin, hollow under-eyes, and a tired, drawn appearance.
EMFACE addresses the root cause of these common concerns — muscle deterioration. By stimulating and strengthening the facial muscles, the treatment helps restore natural volume, firmness, and lift. This not only reduces fine lines, eye-bags, and sagging but also ensures long-lasting, youthful results. Combined with improvements in skin tone and texture, EMFACE is truly revolutionising non-surgical facial rejuvenation.
Ageing and skin laxity are not limited to the face — they affect the body too. Whether it’s the dreaded “bingo wings” for upper arms, loose skin on the tummy, or wobbly knees when you walk, noninvasive body treatments offer powerful solutions to restore confidence.
Treatments like LIPOFIRM PRO and EXION BODY target common body concerns such as loose skin, cellulite and fat reduction. Perfect for anyone wanting to feel more comfortable in sleeveless tops, shorts, or swimwear.
We’ve gone completely back to our roots with the addition of this. Elysia truly believe it’s the perfect addition to complement our high-tech treatments. The Natural Facelift – a one-and-a-halfhour treatment combining the principals of Buccal and Gua Sha massage, physiotherapy, osteopathy, yoga and facial massage to lift, sculpt, and rejuvenate the face naturally.
Using fully hands-on techniques that stimulate circulation, release tension, and boost muscle tone, the Natural Facelift is a deeply restorative experience that leaves
We don’t stop at skin care. We offer solutions to improve intimate health for men and women. Ground-breaking treatments that improve intimate health and pelvic floor strength, empowering both men and women to feel confident and comfortable.
The EMSELLA chair provides a non-invasive solution to strengthen the pelvic floor and core muscles. Whether you’re struggling with post-childbirth recovery, incontinence, prolapse, or even back pain, EMSELLA has provided life-changing results — without discomfort or downtime. Strengthening the pelvic floor doesn’t just improve intimate health; it also supports overall physical function, preventing future issues. It’s a proactive approach to long-term health and wellbeing that everyone can benefit from.
ELYSIA was awarded CLINIC OF EXCELLENCE and BRAND AMBASSADOR in December 2024.
A testament to the outstanding client care and dedication to providing outstanding results and client care.

clients feeling refreshed, glowing, and visibly lifted. By addressing tension held in the jaw, forehead, scalp and neck— this treatment not only improves skin and muscle but also promotes better sleep, reduced stress, tension, and overall wellbeing.
It’s a full-circle approach that perfectly aligns with Elysia’s core belief: it all starts from within.
And perhaps that’s the secret – not chasing perfection, but restoring the very best version of yourself, naturally.

The world of alfresco dining has changed hugely over the last few years, with people much happier to socialise outdoors and prorietors investing lots of money too, so the alfresco experience is now at the heart of many establishments’ offering during the summer months. Nicholas Rudd-Jones did a tour of our region and discovered many delightful outdoor spots
Bull & Swan
24 High Street St Martin’s, Stamford PE9 2LJ, 01780 766412, www.thebullandswan.co.uk
The Bull & Swan has the glorious Potting Shed area behind the main pub. It’s open every day for food and drink and has seating looking out over the raised vegetable beds and flowerbeds. There’s often live music on a Friday, and it’s a great venue for larger get togethers too –
The Little Book of Stamford was launched here last month.
Burghley House
Stamford, PE9 4QN, 01780 752451, burghley.co.uk
Burghley House offers the choice of the more classic Orangery or more informal Garden Café, both of which are delightful. The elegant interiors of the 18th century Orangery are light and airy with huge windows overlooking the beautiful Rose Garden. The outdoor seating area amongst the roses and lavender is a stunning spot to dine on a sunny day. It serves locally sourced dishes throughout the day, including delicious breakfasts, a seasonal lunch menu and luxury afternoon teas.
OPPOSITE: the exquisite outdoor area at Burghley’s Orangery (left) & comfort food at Paten & Co (right).
RIGHT: The Potting Shed at the Bull & Swan (top) & the terrace at The Hayloft at Hunters Interiors (bottom).
The Garden Café is located next to the Gardens’ entrance with indoor and outdoor seating. Dogs are welcome in the outside areas. You can enjoy a drink, light lunch, slice of homemade cake or pick up a children’s lunch. Very handy for the Garden of Surprises.
The Crown
6 All Saints’ Place, Stamford PE9 2AG, 01780 763136, www.kneadpubs.co.uk/the-crown-hotel
The Crown has a huge and immaculately kept outdoor space in the heart of the town with stunning views towards All Saints’ Church. There is plenty of shade under the umbrellas, and an outside bar for busier times in the evening. Owner Mick Thurlby told us: ‘Successful pubs have really transformed themselves in the last twenty years, and in many ways the garden setting is at the epicentre of this transformation – a shift towards families, eating and drinking at all times of the day, fewer people are staying out late and no distinction about the type of drink consumed, be it alcoholic, non-alcoholic or a hot drink. And since Covid, people have become much more used to sitting outside, and have discovered they rather love it, especially if the ambience is right.’ Mick himself is passionate about his outdoor spaces and is often to be found watering the plants.
Easton Walled Gardens
Easton, Grantham NG33 5AP, 01476 530063, www.visiteaston.co.uk
The Coffee Room at The Courtyard at Easton Walled Gardens is open to all visitors, whether they’re heading into the garden or not. On a sunny day, the cobbled space outside is an absolute delight, close to the plants, artists’ materials, quality gifts and plants and garden paraphernalia for sale.
The Applestore, in the gardens themselves, offers hot and cold drinks, homemade sandwiches, light snacks, homemade cakes and ice cream. Undercover seating is available and there are benches and chairs around the gardens for you to use. The Applestore will be open on the usual open days from 25 June (the start of Sweet Pea Season) until the end of July, and also on Sundays in August, from 12–3pm.
The Stables, Copthill Farm, Uffington, Stamford PE9 4TD, 01780 753351, www.huntersinteriors.co.uk
Uffington has lots of outdoor seating on the spacious south-facing patio, with a gazebo for those seeking shade. The team serves excellent coffee, delicious home-made cakes, Hambleton Bakery bread and tea cakes and savoury light lunches. This spot has really become the go-to watering hole for all those on the east side of Stamford and the villages there.
7 All Saints’ Pl, Stamford PE9 2AG, 01780 408647, www.kneadpubs.co.uk/paten-co
Stamford’s Paten & Co has a few tables out the front looking across the square and several tucked alongside the building in what was Crown Street. The vibe here is informal. If you are eating, the
small plates are popular, as is the fire/barbecue cooking, which is especially notable. Paten & Co has an all-day deal for co-working, where you can spend the day there for £12.50 and this includes unlimited coffee and tea, plus a 10% discount off food (and 10% off drinks Monday to Thursday, 4 to 6pm).
The Tobie Norris
12 St Paul’s St, Stamford PE9 2BE, 01780 753800, www.kneadpubs.co.uk/the-tobie-norris
The Tobie Norris has the ultimately traditional feel about it, and it’s where we’d always bring visitors to show them what a great pub looks and feels like. The food here continues to please and there is well managed space out the back to enjoy a beer or wine and a pizza.

The White Hart Ufford
Main Street, Ufford, Stamford PE9 3BH, 01780 740250, www.whitehartufford.co.uk
The White Hart is a personal favourite of ours on a warm summer’s evening, as there is plenty of space out the back plus there’s the adjacent village green if you have kids in tow who want to let off steam. We are also fans of the Courtyard Pizzas here, which are served every Friday and Saturday.
The William Cecil
High Street St Martin’s, Stamford PE9 2LJ, 01780 750070, www.thewilliamcecil.co.uk
The William Cecil, St Martin’s, Stamford has an elegant space out the front of the hotel. We can imagine ourselves sitting there sipping Champagne and enjoying food from the excellent-value menu at Milly’s bistro.
Admiral Hornblower
64 High St, Oakham LE15 6AS, 01572 723004, www.hornblowerhotel.co.uk
Oakham’s Admiral Hornblower is really in splendid form as a destination at the moment, and they have a large outdoor space in the very centre of town. They have recently launched their summer menu, and this could be a typical pick: pea soup with wild garlic pesto and focaccia for starters, then grilled whole ‘fish of the week’, with herby new potatoes, salad and shrimp butter for the main. There are also some really interesting grill options, where it works to share three sides between two people – for example T-Bone lamb chops, salted baked celeriac and a plate of langoustine. What better for an alfresco experience?
Belvoir Retail Village
Belvoir, NG32 1PA, www.belvoircastle.com/retail-village
Belvoir Retail Village offers the Belvoir Woodfired Pizza, housed under a huge canvas canopy. Here, stone-baked pizzas are lovingly handcrafted using only the finest ingredients, from San Marzano tomatoes to fresh buffalo mozzarella. The spot is especially popular with families and visitors with dogs. We suggest a trip to the Farm Shop afterwards for top local produce to take home.
Fern at the Falcon Hotel
7 High St E, Uppingham LE15 9PY, 01572 823535, www.falcon-hotel.co.uk
Fern at the Falcon in Uppingham is an intimate restaurant space in the Falcon Hotel that focuses on small plates, organic wines and British apéritifs. The restaurant is situated in the front room of The Falcon, but its menu can also be enjoyed in the hotel’s garden, so is a great alfresco option in good weather. The Fern team told us: ‘ Fern is rooted in Rutland, shaped by the seasons and led by ingredients. We serve thoughtful small plates, organic wines and British apéritifs. It is for those who seek out restaurants that are led by ingredients, not trends. For people who care how a tomato was grown, how a pig was reared, where a berry ripened. We want our
guests to feel something when they eat here – not just satisfaction, but connection.’
The wine list includes some interesting organic wines from different countries, but also noteworthy British wines, including Matt Gregory Wines based in the Leicestershire Wolds.
The Finch’s Arms
Oakham Rodd, Hambleton LE15 8TL, 01572 756575, www.finchsarms.co.uk
The outdoor space at The Finch’s Arms in Hambleton is amongst the most impressive in our region as it has direct views of Rutland Water and is nestled in the heart of the village. There is ample, well-appointed space out here, so whenever the weather merits it, we suggest you head out here. The cooking is always of a high standard, and we are especially impressed by the new summer menu. This might be a typical choice of three courses: poppy seed Tempura courgette flower with goat’s cheese, nectarine and almond salad and tomato for starters; followed by herb-crusted lamb rump with new potatoes, asparagus, wild garlic, goat’s cheese and mint jus for a main; then Cazcabel ‘Tiramisu’, served with candied pistachio with chocolate soil for dessert.
Gates Garden Centre
Somerby Road, Cold Overton LE15 7QB, 01664 454309, www.gatesgardencentre.co.uk
The Garden Restaurant at Gates Garden Centre, Market Overton has a generous outdoor veranda with lovely views over lakes and countryside. Simply perfect for the summer. It’s open for breakfast, lunch and tea, and always popular. The sourcing here always has a focus on local ingredients.
The George Inn
George Inn, Market Place, Oakham LE15 6DT, 01572 756971, www.thegeorgeinnoakham.co.uk
The George Inn in Oakham has been transformed in the last couple of years under the ambitious new ownership of Ryck Turner, and its aesthetic throughout is traditional and classy. The courtyard area is no exception, harking back to an older era whilst offering oodles of space to enjoy the full alfresco experience, with the complete menu available from the first-rate restaurant.
Hambleton Bakery Café
2 Cottesmore Road, Exton, Rutland LE15 8AN, 01572 812995, www.hambletonbakery.co.uk
Hambleton Bakery Café in Exton has a large outside area with panoramic views over rolling countryside and seating on the terrace in good weather. Plus, of course, you can pick up some Hambleton Bakery bread and cakes from the bakery on your way out.
Hambleton Hall
Hambleton, LE15 8TH, 01572 756991, www.hambletonhall.com
Hambleton Hall, overlooking Rutland Water, has the most stylish terrace of them all, immaculately presented and with stunning views over the parterre towards the Water. You can’t book a table on the terrace, but if it is a fine day then there will be ample chance to have pre-lunch drinks there.
The Lake Isle
16 High St East, Uppingham LE15 9PZ, 01572 822951, www.lakeisle.co.uk
On balmy summer nights you can eat alfresco in the small, covered courtyard at The Lake Isle in Uppingham. It’s the same high service and fabulous food as inside, with heaters for cooler evenings.

You can enjoy a range of dishes, including delicious Mediterranean-inspired options, in this informal area. Cocktails are also a speciality, with a two-for-one offer available between 3pm and 6pm on Wednesdays
to Sundays. Tucked away here is also the delightful Garden Room, an oak-framed private dining room that can accommodate up to 10 diners – the perfect place to meet friends or colleagues.
The Olive Branch
Main St,Clipsham LE15 7SH, 01780 410355, www.theolivebranchpub.com
The outdoors of The Olive Branch in Clipsham is always a magical place to be in the summer, and you can enjoy eating from the main menu here. In July and August there will also be the Fruits de Mer platter, available Wednesday to Saturday lunchtimes and also prebookable for Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The Fruits de Mer Platter includes shellfish bisque; octopus lollipop, ponzu; steamed mussels; spider crab legs; shell-on king prawn; scallop ceviche and crayfish cocktail. £39.50 per person. Go with a big appetite!
Farndon Fields
Market Harborough, LE16 9NP, 01858 464838, www.farndonfields.co.uk
The only challenge with the Farndon Fields Farmer’s Kitchen is that you may not be able to get through the inspiring food hall without buying some goodies first. The open-air courtyard is a suntrap and is appealingly laid out with tables and flowerbeds made out of old railway sleepers and metal water troughs. Local sourcing is an absolute philosophy for the team here, and a significant amount of the produce comes direct from their own farm.
The Nevill Arms 12 Waterfall Way, Medbourne LE16 8EE, 01858 565288, www.nevillarms.co.uk
The Josper Bar & Grill, in the rear courtyard of The Nevill Arms, is surrounded by an array of beautiful flowers and a gnarled olive tree.

7 All Saints’ Place, Stamford, PE9 2AG 01780 408647 paten@kneadpubs.co.uk
Here, or on the River Terrace at the front, is the perfect place to while away summer days. Enjoy delicious, charcoaled meat and fish dishes cooked on a state-of-the-art Josper oven in the open kitchen. There’s a new covered area this year, so even on showery or chilly days, you can dine in comfort and style. Eat at this historic hotel and pub and you’ll be doing your bit for the environment, too – as much of the meat comes from its own farm just a few miles down the road in the beautiful Welland Valley. Country Life has called this ‘a stunning venue’.
The Red Lion, Great Bowden 5 Main Street, Great Bowden LE16 7HB, 01858 463571, www.redlion-greatbowden.co.uk

There’s a classic woodfired Gozney pizza oven and an outside bar. The menu includes an array of small plates and ‘sliders’. The Quadrant area has

individual booths constructed from recycled stable partitions and wooden beams – and each one has its own flat-screen TV, so why not book one when your favourite team is playing to cheer them on? We love the vibe here.
The Sun Inn
The Sun Inn, 6 Cross Bank, Great Easton LE16 8SR, 01536 772182, www.thesuninnge.com
This has a beautiful, tranquil enclosed space that feels more like an English cottage garden than a typical pub garden. Created by a team of local designers, it features topiary, fragrant jasmine and honeysuckle, old roses and herbs destined for the kitchen. Troughs and pots are full of rich planting, and these dovetail with the colours and textures of the historic stone and brick outbuildings. There’s an outdoors Gozney pizza oven, with pizzas costing just £10 on Tuesdays. If you’re looking for an ‘almost alfresco’ experience, the Garden Room can seat up to 20 and is perfect for celebrations
The Boxwood Café at the Barn Garden Café
The Barn Garden Café Barnwell Road, Oundle PE8 5PB, 01832 273310, www.thebarngardencentre.co.uk
The Boxwood Café at the Barn Garden Café in Barnwell has an outside patio, with plenty of room for alfresco dining for breakfast, lunch, drinks, snacks and afternoon tea that can be pre-booked. The Falcon Inn at Fotheringhay has perhaps the best view of all from the garden, looking towards the stunning Fotheringhay Church. Owners Zak and Maddy have brought passion and excellence to running this delightful pub.
New Lodge Farm
Laxton Road, near Bulwick NN17 3DU, 01780 450493, www.newlodgefarm.co.uk
At New Lodge Farm, near Bulwick, a fabulous new café extension opened up last year alongside the existing café, for customers who are looking for a drink and perhaps a cake rather than a meal. It has sliding glass doors leading out onto a delightful east-facing patio. There’s also pizza on Saturday nights under a large canopy tent which is a lot of fun! See also our review on p96.
The Pickled Shop
15 Main Street, Bulwick, Northants NN17 3DY 01780 450774, www.thepickledshop.com
Out the back at The Pickled Shop in Bulwick is a delightful, covered space that opens out straight into the garden, with views of the church and a great feeling of tranquillity – quintessentially English. The menu has lots of goodies on it – from ‘the perfect Ploughman’s’ to the tapas menu to cakes – something that suits everyone. We often stop here on our monthly distribution round and aim to arrive just in time for the excellent tapas.

EW LODGE FARM seamlessly blends tradition with modern leisure, continuing its legacy as a thriving livestock farm while welcoming guests to an award-winning destination for relaxation and indulgence. The energy that Sarah and Simon Singlehurst bring to this business is evident throughout – in the welcoming layout, the friendliness of the staff and the array of quality artisan food products.
The Lockdown Café provides customers with a place to eat, drink and socialise in a homely, relaxed environment. It’s open 9am to 3.30pm for breakfast, light lunches and hot drinks/cakes. On Fridays and Saturdays, the café also opens from 6pm to 8pm for more substantial meals, and there is a Sunday roast lunch offering. The licensed bar serves real ales, gins, ciders and wine, wherever possible from local suppliers.
On Friday evenings the café offers ‘Cook your own steak on a stone’. Choose your favourite from the steak of the day options, served with freshly fried chipped potatoes, beer-battered onion rings and a salad garnish. The volcanic rock lets you cook your steak exactly how you like it. Alternatively, opt for fish, chips and minted mushy peas – a large boneless fillet in homemade beer batter, served with chipped potatoes, tartare sauce and lemon. Or enjoy the Singlehurst Signature Burger: a quarter-pound beef burger with Monterey Jack cheese in a toasted brioche bun, served with chips, onion rings and salad. Meals must be pre-ordered online to help minimise food waste, another core value here.
We tried their pizzas one evening last month and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. The ambience is delightful – families and friends, often with a dog, enjoying a pizza and a drink. There’s a great air of contentment here, and plenty of space. If you want to get away from it all and eat alfresco under a canvas canopy (or in the café – so there’s backup in all weathers), this is an ideal spot. No pre-booking – just turn up. Each pizza is £10.95 with up to three toppings. Tick your choices on a card, order a drink, take a buzzer and wait (10 minutes for us).
The pizzas are generously sized and served on slate boards with a pizza cutter. Add parmesan, pepper or chilli sauce and tuck in. Our son Frank, something of a gourmet, rated his red onion, mushroom and cheddar version: ‘Great dough, love the toppings.’ It passed the speed test – gone in two minutes. For dessert, we had Bennetts ice cream from the cabinet, which hit the spot.
Sunday lunch is something to behold – and a farm feels the perfect place for a substantial, locally sourced feast. The menu offers a joint straight from the farm butchery (chicken or beef), served with crispy roast potatoes, Richard’s giant Yorkshire pudding, honey-glazed parsnips, leeks ‘au gratin’ and seasonal vegetables. It’s £18.95. There’s also a veggie option: a mushroom, brie and cranberry Wellington, served with all the trimmings. Sunday lunch uses a pre-ordering system, so you select your meal and book your table in advance.
We thoroughly recommend a trip to New Lodge Farm to try their food offering if you like a relaxed atmosphere, open countryside on the doorstep, locally sourced food and a really warm welcome. new lodge farm, laxton road, nr bulwick nn17 3du 01780 450493

AGROUP OF eight of us set out one bright summer’s morning to explore this stretch of river from Cambridge to Ely – and it turned out to be far more picturesque and interesting in real life than the flatness of the terrain might have suggested. We chose this walk for the satisfaction of being able to get off the train in one city and rejoin it in another, and to get a fair number of miles under our belt (a couple of us were in training for the Coast to Coast), writes Nicholas Rudd-Jones. However, it turned out to be much more than that – there is always something interesting to see along the way: coming out of Cambridge and watching the myriad scullers in different combinations of number, age and gender. A multitude of wildlife and beautiful flora & fauna. An active riverside community. All sorts of different agricultural activities, including a massive turf farm. And then the glory of Ely cathedral hoving into view for the last five miles. Good company and great interest along the route made for a day that we would recommend for anyone that wants to experience something different and really test those legs.
Distance: 18 miles
Typical time: 8 hours or so, including stops
Start: Cambridge Train Station (or Cambridge North to avoid the route through Cambridge outskirts)
Finish: Ely Train Station
Terrain: Flat, but beware nettles and a few cows!
Logistics: Take the train at start of day from Oakham, Stamford or Peterborough to Cambridge. Return from Ely.
• The Fen Rivers Way starts in Cambridge and finishes in King’s Lynn. It is 50 miles altogether. For much of the route, it follows the well-drained flood banks of the rivers Cam and Great Ouse.
• The Conservators of the River Cam are the navigation authority for the River and were founded in 1702 to maintain the navigability of the river after the draining of the Fens when it became much more difficult. Before that time, Cambridge had been a major inland port. Their base was the Conservators’ House in Clayhithe, which you can still see today, and which served as a toll house.
• Willows and Washes The grassland between the flood bank and the river is home to rare plants and bird life. These grasslands are called washes because they naturally flood in winter. The washes have been used to graze cattle for many generations, and are home to wetland birds, such as the snipe and redshank.
• Ely, a tiny city built on what was once an island, takes its name from the eels that were traditionally used to pay debts. If you have any energy left at the end, or choose to stay the night, this is a charming (and tiny) city to explore.
• At 2 miles: Kerb Kollective@Cambridge Museum of Technology, Riverside Old Pumping Station (CB5 8HN). Maybe a bit early in the walk, but good if you had to get up early and want a bite to eat.
• At 6 miles: The Bridge at Clayhithe (CB25 9HZ) is a good break point for a cold drink and bathroom break. The garden overlooks the river.
• At 10 miles: Five Miles From Anywhere – No Hurry Inn (CB7 5ZR; www.fivemilesinn.com ), in the village of Upware/Note that you need to be on the east side of the river. Large garden that runs down to the riverside, serving traditional food and real ales. The history of the name goes back to the nineteenth century, when the original pub sign the Lord Nelson was mislaid and a punter suggested this witty alternative which has stuck ever since. Sadly, the pub was badly damaged by fire in the 1950s.
• Ely There are many and various places for refreshments here – we chose The Cutter Inn (CB7 4BN; www.thecutterinn.co.uk) on the waterfront, with tables on the terrace out front, looking over the beautiful marina. The wide-ranging menu includes ‘food inspired by flavour’ and pub classics, so something for everyone.
Set out from the railway station and pick up the River Cam at the easternmost end of Midsummer Common. The route we took was: Tennison Road, Mill Road, Mill Road Cemetery, St Matthew’s Street, East Road, underpass, Walnut Tree Avenue, Riverbank. I suggest you just get Google maps out for this stage.
2 Follow the river on the south side, then, once in Stourbridge Common, follow the river until you have passed under the railway line. At this point cross the river to the north side. (NB: Cambridge North Station is close to here, so can be an alternative start point.)
3
4
Keep on this side of the river all the way to The Bridge Inn at Clayhithe.
At Clayhithe, you have a choice between the east or west side; if you take the east side, you then have the option of the pub at Upware and a detour to Wicken Fen (but the latter would add several miles); there is also a gorgeous green lane and Kingfishers Bridge nature reserve, so on balance we would recommend this side.
5 Eventually you reach the Fish and Duck marina, and this is where the River Cam joins the River Great Ouse; if you are on the west side, cross a footbridge here over the Ouse to continue along the west side of the river. If you are on the east side, continue along the path for another 2.5 miles and then cross to the west side alongside the A142 road (Point 5B on map).
6
The path eventually snakes under the railway line and into the marina at Ely. You have arrived!

IFIRST SAW FUGU in September 2023 at Brewery House in Ketton. It was an enchanting evening. Graham Dale and Jay Goldmark are FUGU, and that gig was only their second as a duo, although the pair had a long collaboration together as part of the celebrated Paspatou. That band’s gigs often felt like a whole Womad Festival in one show. Well FUGU take that several steps further, and just one number can carry echoes of Cuba, the Souk, West Africa, India, Japan and a jazzy European cafe.
I got to know FUGU better at one of their rehearsals. I have attended band rehearsals before, and it is a privilege and great fun hearing acts honing their performance. However, this was exceptional. I was reminded of Peter Jackson’s film Get Back FUGU sound nothing like The Beatles, but here was FUGU’s whole exciting creative process, exploring ideas, teasing out compelling music and searching for perfection.
If you are lucky enough to catch a FUGU gig, it will be hard to get your head around the fact that the sound is created live by just two people. Graham mainly plays saxophone (more on that later) and Jay the double bass. However, the music coming at you is a full-on band. Jay talked me through – for example – how, whilst playing the bass, he also created a percussion section. He has small microphones attached to his bass of a type developed for David Attenborough’s wildlife programmes. By hitting them and feeding through a complex pedal system, Jay brings a whole drum section into being. Similarly, Graham uses pedals to create space for his
sound landscape vocals. I don’t understand the technology but the aural kaleidoscope they both create is lush, big and captivating.
FUGU’s innovation is not just high-tech, as Stamford-based music teacher and music director [of Woven Chords Community Choir], Graham is also a low-tech genius. His favourite music shop is Stamford’s legendary Harrison & Dunn hardware store! Here he picks up plumbing materials and turns them into truly unique flutelike instruments, which create a really fun vibe.
Jay, of the immensely talented Goldmark family, is also a member of The Roamantics and Real Monsters groups (both of whom can be seen at Uppingham’s Social Sundays over the summer). As with Graham, music seems to pulse through Jay’s veins.
Every FUGU gig is truly original and created live before your eyes – and ears – and Graham describes their music as soundtracks of films that have not been made yet. Certainly, as I sat in the rehearsal with the music washing over me, images of oceans, mountains and driving through rainy cityscapes flashed through my mind.
I hope you managed to catch FUGU at Stamford’s Browne’s Hospital on Friday 27 June, but look for details of future performances, or find out how to book them, on www.fuguband. co.uk where you can also watch the perfect film introduction to the duo. It was shot at Nevill Holt and is aptly titled ‘FUGU –Adventures in Sound’.
