Welcome

WELCOME to Stamford, whether you are local, a regular or a first-time visitor. Once again this year, the accolades have been many for Stamford, most notably perhaps in November 2024 when St Mary’s Street was named the best for independent shopping in the UK by the American Express Shop Small campaign. What an achievement!

‘It’s a town that shoppers and visitors are delighted by’

Shop Stamford

Shop Stamford was set up nine years ago to promote and support our town’s amazing independent retailers and traders, and it is run on a voluntary basis by those businesses. Through a series of events and publicity, we have successfully raised the town’s profile still further, and in 2019 we launched The Little Book of Stamford to ensure that visitors are fully ‘in the know’ and can squeeze every ounce of enjoyment out of their visit. This is now the 5th edition, which also includes an accompanying map.

The town has had an excellent run since the last edition. Many new indies have arrived in our ranks, offering specialities from dog blankets to children’s games and gifts; and a notable feature of the last year has been our eating out culture has continued to become buzzier, more informal and to spill out onto the streets, especially Sheepmarket, which is a throng of laughter and conviviality on a summer’s day.

In fact, Stamford is in incredibly good health – existing businesses thrive, new ones are popping up all the time, and the town is now known to people far and wide. It’s a town that

shoppers and visitors are delighted by… they tell their friends, and we welcome still more newcomers to our amazing spot.

What The Little Book Offers…

In this guide we provide you with everything you need to know, including details of places to visit, places to eat, where to stay and where to park; plus, of course, a complete listing of our marvellous independent businesses.

So, please enjoy your visit to Stamford, make the most of our free publication and be sure to let all your friends know what a gem of a town you have discovered.

STAMFORD HIGHLIGHTS

2

The HOSTELRIES

Stamford was at the centre of the coaching trade in the 18th century, and many of the hostelries grew and thrived during that period, including the Bull & Swan, The George and The Crown. The George dates back to 1541. For many people, when you say you live in Stamford, they say, ‘Ah yes, I’ve visited The George, on my way to…’ Charles I and William III did just that.

1

The architecture

Stamford has the most listed buildings (600) of any town its size – and many much larger – in the country. It was the first town in the UK to be declared a conservation area, in 1967. It has also been a popular film and TV location, including for ‘Middlemarch’, ‘Pride & Prejudice’ and, in more recent years, ‘The Crown’. The town has an almost unblemished historic core, with the view across the Meadows, the medieval churches, St George’s Square and Barn Hill being amongst the most perfect. Other highlights include Browne’s Hospital (Broad Street), the Town Hall on St Mary’s Hill and Stamford Arts Centre on St Mary’s Street. The walk on p12 is a great introduction to the town’s architecture.

3

Burghley

Burghley is regarded as one of the finest Elizabethan houses in the country. As well as the house, highlights include the Sculpture Park, Garden of Surprises, adventure playground and Horse Trials (see p9). From town it makes a delightful 30-minute walk to the house through the park. It’s also perfect for a cycle.

4

The Meadows

The Meadows became Common Land as a result of the Enclosure Act of 1871 and ever since they have been at the hub of leisure activities for townsfolk and visitors alike, hosting many events across the year and always a good spot for a picnic, to knock a ball about or to walk the dog. Thanks to Pride of Stamford volunteer litter pickers, who are dedicated to keeping our beautiful town… beautiful.

5

MID-LENT FAIR

There has been a Mid-Lent Fair in Stamford for over 800 years, starting life as a cloth and luxurygoods market and now a funfair that every Stamford youngster looks forward to each year. It comes to town on Mothering Sunday and runs for a week, extending along Broad Street, Red Lion Square, Sheepmarket and Bath Row. Dates for 2026 are 16–21 March.

6

The CHURCHES

Dominating the Stamford skyline are its incredible churches. The 13th-century St Mary’s has a decorated medieval wagon vault ceiling and some excellent restoration work in the Arts and Crafts style. St George’s (mainly 15th century) is in the most lovely of settings. St John’s has been described as ‘an almost perfect example of the small Perpendicular town church’. The 15th-century St Martin’s has a number of nationally important memorials to the Cecil family. All Saints dates right back to the 13th century. Look up and you will see a sundial on the south side, installed in 2012 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stamford Civic Society. Peregrine falcons like to roost here too!

7

SURROUNDING COUNTRYSIDE

We are blessed living alongside Rutland, a county described as ‘The Cotswolds without the crowds’ and with the incomparable Rutland Water (see p11), one of the largest manmade lakes in Europe, offering water sports, cycling, birdwatching, regular parkrun events and even a beach!

8

The MARKETS

The Friday Market, held on Broad and Ironmonger streets every Friday, is the social hub of the town, with lots of friendly banter and greetings. There is a fabulous range of stalls, including fruit and vegetables, bakery, flowers and plants, pet treats and clothes. A Farmers’ Market takes place in the High Street every Friday, and Red Lion Square markets are on Friday and Saturday. For more info on markets, see p16.

9

STAMFORD SCHOOL

Established in 1532, the co-educational, independent Stamford School is interwoven into the landscape of the town, and in termtime its pupils, of whom there are over 1,600 from the ages of 2 to 18, add a youthful buzz to the town. Of particular architectural note is the chapel on St Paul’s Street. Famous alumni include the conductor Sir Malcolm Sargent, the writer Colin Dexter and the actor George Robinson.

10

TOLETHORPE

The Stamford Shakespeare Company is based at Tolethorpe Hall, a couple of miles to the north of Stamford (see p15). Nothing is more agreeable than getting a group of friends and a picnic together to enjoy one of their open-air performances, held from June to August. The audience’s seats are covered, but the stage and performers are not. Find out what’s on and when at: tolethorpe.co.uk

STAMFORD & AROUND

Whether you’re in our town and region for a few hours or a few days, we have some suggested itineraries for you ITINERARIES

A FULL DAY

• Enjoy our half-day recommendation (as in the box, left) and combine it with a trip to Burghley (see p9). You could opt for either half first.

• Visit the House at Burghley but also make time for the delightful Sculpture Garden and Garden of Surprises. If you have children, then Hide & Secrets adventure play is highly recommended.

• Once you have had your fill, take a break in the Orangery restaurant in the main house, or the Garden café by the Sculpture Garden.

A weekend

• Day 1: do the full-day tour opposite.

• Day 2: take the tour around Rutland Water, described below. The total driving distance is around 30 miles.

RUTLAND WATER TOUR

The North Shore

Take the A606 out of Stamford to Rutland Water. Park at Sykes Lane (LE15 8QL), which is a great family destination, including an adventure playground, the Rutland Water Interactive Visitor Centre with Mini Golf Course and seasonal children’s activities and events. During the summer holidays you can also enjoy the Rutland Water Beach. There’s also a very pleasant stroll from here across the dam. Back on the A606, moving anticlockwise around Rutland Water, you come to Whitwell, where there are numerous sports options, including bike hire, windsurfing, kayaking and paddleboarding. The Aqua Park is also a great attraction here in the summer. Cruises around Rutland Water on the Rutland Belle also start from Whitwell; check rutlandwatercruises.com/ timetable/ for times for the boat.

Market Towns

At this point, add in a visit to one or both of Rutland’s market towns: Oakham & Uppingham.

Oakham: As you drive into Oakham from the east, look out for the Queen Elizabeth II statue behind Oakham Library. In the town, wander around the Market Place, notable for its Buttercross, and the adjacent Oakham Castle, home to a fabulous collection of commemorative horseshoes. Mill Street is especially good for shopping and refreshments.

Uppingham: This picturesque market town is full of art galleries, including Goldmark, and small, independent shops, and it is home to the prestigious Uppingham School. It only take a few minutes to stroll around and bathe in the rich yellow stone. Do as the locals do and pick up a cake at Baines Bakery on High Street East.

The South Shore

The A6003 connects Oakham and Uppingham, so whichever one of these you are coming from, make for Manton. Turn back to Stamford (east) here along the south shore of Rutland Water. If you like all things gifts and gardens, then stop at Rutland Nursery for shopping and refreshments. There are glorious views here looking over Rutland Water towards Oakham and Burley on the Hill. The shop is incredible. Lyndon Visitor Centre, situated just east of this (the first turning on the left after the Nursery), is a must if you are a twitcher or into nature. This is a lovely spot, and you can learn all about the Rutland Water Osprey Project. Continue east on the Manton Road to Edith Weston. Just after the village, call in at Rutland Water Normanton car park if you’d like to walk along the shoreline to Normanton Church (pictured), one of the great symbols of Rutland, saved from the waters when the reservoir was created back in the early 1970s.

From this point, it’s just about 15 minutes (7 miles) by car to get back to Stamford.

A WALK AROUND STAMFORD

this takes about one hour

Begin your walk on the Meadows, with the classic view of Stamford and the charming Welland River. (If you’ve driven to Stamford, park in Bath Row or at the Cattlemarket car park, see p19.)

Head south over the river, past The George hotel’s entrance on your left and up Wothorpe Road, taking the first left (Church Street), which brings you out on High Street St Martin’s, named after the church of the same name now opposite you. St Martin’s holds the splendid tombs of the Cecil family of Burghley House. If time allows, pop into the graveyard behind the church – if you look over the wall on the lefthand side, there’s a fine, unexpected view over the town’s rooftops.

Next, head north back down High Street St Martin’s, towards town, to admire some of its finest Georgian architecture. Pass The George’s front entrance, cross the town bridge and make your way up St Mary’s Hill. On your right is Stamford’s Town Hall and at the top of the hill is St Mary’s Church.

Turn right just before the church, into the beautiful St Mary’s Place. Walk around to the northeastern corner of the square and turn right onto St Mary’s Street, where you can admire yet more of the glorious Georgian architecture for which Stamford is famed – it may all be familiar from the BBC series ‘Middlemarch’, which was filmed right here.

3 1 2 4 5

Pass Stamford Arts Centre and you reach the elegant Georgian St George’s Square. Walk along the left side of the church

and turn into St George’s Street, which swings left and leads to the High Street.

Turn right here and head along St Paul’s Street as far as Stamford School, which was founded in 1532. Retrace your steps and turn right into Star Lane and then left onto Broad Street, where the town’s market is held on Fridays. Landmarks heading west on Broad Street include the old School of Art (on your left), the Roman Catholic church (on your right), the Stamford Corn Exchange (now a theatre and home to Stamford Visitor Centre, see p18 on your left) and (on your right) Browne’s Hospital, a medieval almshouse founded by wealthy wool merchant William Browne in 1475.

6 7

As you reach the end of Broad Street, you’ll come to a fork in the road – take the left-hand branch (Red Lion Street), which leads down to All Saints’ Church, and to Red Lion Square. If you glance over to your left at this point, you’ll see another of Stamford’s five medieval churches: St John the Baptist, recognisable by the crenellated top of its square tower. Meanwhile, to the right of All Saints’ is Barn Hill, one of the town’s most quintessential streets and well worth a look. It is generally regarded as Stamford’s finest residential street.

8

Finally, exit Red Lion Square down Horseshoe Lane, in the southwest corner, and through Sheepmarket with its striking modern rendition of an Eleanor Cross; then head down Castle Dyke. Admire the medieval arches at the bottom on the right, all that remains of Stamford Castle. You have reached the Meadows once again and the end of your walk.

culture & what’s on

venues | music | theatre | art | key events in the town’s calendar

Stamford is a town steeped in history and brimming with cultural life. With its elegant Georgian streets, vibrant artistic community and welcoming venues, it offers a rich blend of heritage and contemporary culture. Whether you’re passing through or have made Stamford your home, there’s always something to engage, inspire and enjoy.

Cultural Venues

At the heart of the town’s cultural life is Stamford Arts Centre, a much-loved multi-arts venue housed in an 18th-century building at 27 St Mary’s Street (PE9 2DL). With a theatre, cinema, ballroom, gallery and coffee shop (see p30), it’s a hub for everything from film screenings and poetry readings to live music and drama. The local amateur group, Stamford Shoestring Theatre, perform here too. There’s also a range of workshops, from painting to yoga. Find the full programme of events at www.stamfordartscentre.com.

At 38 Broad Street (PE9 1PX) is Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre, which is run by

volunteers and hosts a range of productions, from music tribute acts to stand-up comedy to local amateur shows. See what’s on and book tickets at www.stamfordcornexchange.co.uk.

In the Corn Exchange foyer, you will find Stamford Visitor Centre (see p18).

Opposite the Corn Exchange, on the northern side of Broad Street, is Browne’s Hospital, a medieval almshouse founded in 1475 by wealthy wool merchant William Browne. Concerts are occasionally hosted in its historic chapel.

Other key venues include the two-tier Barn Hill Methodist Church on the historic Barn Hill, which runs up from All Saints’ Church, and St Martin’s Church, on High Street St Martin’s, both of which are used for concerts and community events.

Also, just a couple of miles north of town, Tolethorpe Hall offers one of the region’s most magical theatrical experiences (see our ‘Spotlight On’ opposite).

The Music Scene

Stamford has a lively and diverse music scene that is growing year on year. The longestablished Stamford Chamber Orchestra performs four times a year, usually at Stamford Arts Centre, offering an accessible classical repertoire and attracting strong local support.

Every May, the Stamford International Music Festival (SIMFestival; est. 2016), founded by rising star of the classical music world, violinist Freya Goldmark (who grew up locally), brings world-class chamber musicians to the town for a weekend of exceptional concerts. Most concerts are at the Arts Centre, with some at St Martin’s Church (sometimes also other venues). SIMFestival kicks off on 21 May 2026 and the theme for 2026 is ‘Music to laugh and cry to’. Keep an eye on simfestival.com for updates.

SIMFestival at Stamford Arts Centre | Photo: Matthew Johnson

New in 2025 is the Chamber Music Concert Series from Stamford Strings, launched by founder Libby Summers, with a programme of three concerts scheduled for June, July and September at St Martin’s Church. This is an exciting addition to the local cultural calendar. Jazz lovers are well catered for too. Orpheus Arts regularly programmes intimate jazz concerts at Barn Hill Methodist Church, bringing superb musicians to an atmospheric and acoustically lovely venue in the heart of the town. See Orpheus Arts’ Facebook for updates.

Stamford’s poet laureate each spring since 2012, a competition has been held in stamford to find a local poet to hold the honorary title of Poet Laureate for one year. Throughout the year the Poet Laureate works with Stamford Arts Centre, Stamford Town Council and within the community to support the thriving poetry scene and develop opportunities to make poetry part of the life of the town. see stamford arts centre’s website for more details.

Local Artists

Stamford is also home to a thriving community of artists and makers. Creatives such as Ruth Hudson, Gillian Durno, Karen Neale, Stephanie Stilwell and many more contribute to a rich local visual arts scene. The Arts Centre’s gallery space hosts exhibitions throughout the year, including two annual shows by the Welland Valley Art Society and a changing programme of work by artists in residence.
