Why did you choose Berklee Valencia for your First Year Abroad?

I have Mexican origins but didn’t know much Spanish. I thought it would be a great opportunity to not only improve my Spanish but also explore Europe. I had never been to Europe before, and it felt like the perfect chance to immerse myself in a new culture.

What subjects did you study?

It was great! There was a lot of diversity in terms of what I studied. I learned Harmony, ear training, and was also in ensembles. There was also a strong focus on technology, which was really cool. It was a mix of music theory, practice, and tech.

What was the highlight of your experience?

The biggest highlight was the community, the food, and getting to know the city. Plus, performing with local musicians was such an amazing experience.

What did you like most about the Valencia campus?

I think what made the campus beautiful was how welcoming everyone was. The campus itself was amazing, and everyone there was so kind and open. It was easy to feel at home.

How did you immerse yourself in the local culture?

I immersed myself by talking to locals in Spanish. I also attended jam sessions and visited local markets. It was a fun way to connect with the culture and improve my Spanish.

How did this experience enrich your musicianship?

The experience was incredible. I had the chance to perform live with local musicians in Valencia, which really pushed me to grow as a musician. It also inspired me to continue improving my skills.

What advice would you give to students considering the First Year Abroad program?

Definitely be yourself. Take the opportunity to explore and be open to meeting new people. And, of course, practice your Spanish! Just be ready to embrace everything this experience has to offer.

What did you take with you to Boston?

I took with me the confidence to go after new opportunities and the experiences that helped me grow both as a person and a musician.
