The Master of Music in Contemporary Performance with a concentration in production is designed to give advanced instrumentalists and vocalists of any style the confidence and skills in performance and production technology to take their careers to the next level.

During this program, you will develop a strong artistic identity through frequent performance opportunities, private instruction, ensembles, and studio recordings. You will become adept at pre-production, recording, and mixing processes through ample firsthand experience in state-ofthe-art studios—ready to meet the unique demands facing the artist of tomorrow.

You will apply the principles of innovation to music projects, getting experience in studio music production, engineering, electronic music production, performance, and/or interactive media.

Master of Music in Scoring for Film, Television, and Video Games

Visual media is everywhere, from full-length feature films and television to web series and immersive video games. Whether you see it on an IMAX screen or a smartphone and whether you hear it in 7.1 surround sound or on a pair of earbuds, the experience is enhanced by the accompanying music. The craft of creating this music has become one of the world’s most desirable careers.

This one-year intensive master of music degree focuses on the art and craft of composing, orchestrating, editing, and producing music for the screen using the latest technology. Students lead recording sessions with professional session musicians and receive in-depth instruction in narrative analysis, orchestration, and the use of dramatic effects to support the story.

Admissions Process

We recommend that applicants begin the graduate admissions process as early as possible to ensure enrollment into the desired academic year.

All graduate programs at the Valencia campus begin in September and are completed in one year (Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters).

Each applicant is allowed to submit one graduate application per admissions cycle. Applicants not admitted to a graduate program may not reapply until the following year.

Application Fee

Audition and Interview

Once you submit your application and supporting materials, selected applicants will receive invitations for auditions and/or interviews. Auditions are only required for applicants to the Master of Music in Contemporary Performance (Production Concentration) program. Other programs require only an interview.

Final Decision

After meeting all requirements, our Graduate Board of Admissions carefully evaluates applicants based on their completed application, supporting materials, and audition/ interview performance. Applicants will receive notification of their admissions status via email by the specified deadline.

One Letter of Recommendation

From a professional who can attest to your strengths and skills. Recommendation should not be done by friends or peers, rather a professor or someone that you have reported to professionally.

Portfolio (program specific)

A document that includes examples of your previous works, original idea proposals, and other materials specific to the program you are applying for. Ensure to select the materials that showcase your skills and align with the program s focus.

For your application to be considered, you need to submit all of the required materials by the application deadline. Materials that are submitted separately from the online application form are:

Official Transcripts:

All applicants must provide official transcripts from your undergraduate studies. Do not submit transcripts for high school, master´s, or other degrees.

Transcripts must be evaluated by a third-party service, such as SpanTran or Educational Credential Evaluators, to provide a course-by-course evaluation. Begin this process early as it may take several weeks.

Audition and Interview

Soon after the application deadline, the Board of Admissions will review the submitted applications. Selected applicants will be invited to participate in an audition and/or interview. This is a critical part of the evaluation process and provides an opportunity to demonstrate your talents and suitability for the program.

Auditions

Expect the audition and interview to be approximately 20–30 minutes long and consist of four parts: prepared piece, sight reading, improvisation, and melodic and rhythmic play back. For more details, refer to the page.

Auditions

The audition staff will be looking primarily at quality of sound, interpretation/style, intonation, stage presence, rhythm, musicality, preparation, and quality of improvisation. The audition staff may ask you to demonstrate other musical or technical abilities depending on your unique strengths.

Note: Auditions are only required for the Master of Music in Contemporary Performance (Production Concentration). Other programs require only an interview.

Interviews

The interviewer will use the information provided on your application as the foundation for this discussion. Depending on the graduate program you are applying to, you may be asked technical or field-based questions during the interview. Visa Requirements and Timelines

If you are planning to study in Spain and require a student visa, it is crucial to start familiarizing yourself with the visa application process. We recommend contacting your corresponding Spanish consulate as soon as possible. Visa requirements and procedures can vary significantly between consulates in the U.S. and around the world.

Master's degree students planning to stay in Spain for more than 90 days need a long-stay student visa. This visa allows students to study for up to one year. The visa application process involves submitting required documentation to your respective Spanish consulate. To ensure a smooth process, we advise starting your visa application immediately after receiving a positive admissions decision.

Passport Requirement

All students must possess a passport valid for at least six months beyond the end date of their program. It is recommended to have your passport ready at least four months before your program start date to facilitate your visa application. During the visa application period, students are advised against making international travel plans as consulates may retain passports during processing.

Considerations

Be aware that some consulates are experiencing delays in appointment availability and visa processing times. Despite potential delays, it is essential to complete your visa application before departing your home country. Remember, noncitizens of the European Union, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, and Switzerland require a student visa to enter and study in Spain.

Each year, Berklee Valencia offers over in merit- and need-based scholarships to prospective graduate students on Berklee’s campus in Valencia, Spain.

We are committed to ensuring accessibility and affordability. Graduate students who apply for a Berklee Valencia scholarship by the deadline will be taken into consideration for our awards. Q: When do graduate programs begin?

A: Graduate programs start in late August during orientation week (mandatory for all students) and last three semesters, ending mid-July. Check the academic calendar for more details.

Q: Can I do the program part-time?

A: The graduate programs are designed to be completed in one intensive year of full-time and in-person classes. Part-time programs are currently not available.

Q: Can I apply to the graduate program if I don’t have a bachelor’s degree but I have experience in the music industry?

A: To be eligible to apply to a master’s degree, all applicants are required to hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a regionally accredited institution.

Q: Can I still apply to the program if I haven’t graduated yet but will before the program starts?

A: Yes, if you are currently in the final year of your bachelor's degree you are eligible to apply. Follow the instructions under How to Apply for detailed information on applying.

Q: What if my English exam doesn’t meet the minimum score requirement?

A: If your English exam doesn’t meet the minimum score requirement, we still encourage you to submit it with the rest of your supporting materials as a placeholder. The Office of Graduate Admissions will review all your documents and inform you if you need to retake the exam and resubmit updated exam results.

Q: I have submitted my application. How can I check my application status?

A: Log in to your online portal to check the status of your application and supporting materials. When materials are received they will be highlighted in green within your portal. Allow several days for the materials to be processed: if some items are still highlighted in red several days after you submitted them it may mean that they have not been received and should be sent in to the Admissions Office as soon as possible.

Q: If I am accepted to a master’s degree program but cannot attend, can I defer enrollment to the following academic year?

A: We do not defer enrollment. You are only accepted for the academic year you applied for. If you cannot attend for the year you are accepted and want to attend the following year, you must reapply and submit all required application materials.

Q: Are the Valencia campus graduate programs accredited in the US?

A: All graduate programs at Berklee’s campus in Valencia, Spain, are accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (formerly the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc.), which is internationally recognized as an authority on educational quality.
