FROM OUR

EDITOR My idea of love comes from my family.

I

hope everyone has been enjoying the recent streak of pleasant weather. While we don't typically publish a magazine, we thought Valentine's Day would be the perfect occasion to do so. This special issue focuses on the essence of love: the movies, places, music, and people who fill our lives with meaning. In the midst of the stress that many juniors are facing with standardized tests and seniors awaiting college responses, I recommend checking out Reid Waxman's page on the music we love. Sometimes, the right song can provide a much-needed break from life's pressures. For those scrambling to find a last-minute Valentine’s Day dinner, turn to page 24 to read Stella Liberman’s recommendations for foods she loves to eat. Warning: it might make you hungry, but it could also inspire some great ideas for dining in. If you're still in need of a Valentine's date, Joey Tomassetti has compiled a list of pickup lines he loves. These humorous lines might just help you secure that sought-after date. Trust me, they have worked for Joey almost every time he has used them. If you are going to be by yourself on Valentine’s night or any night as a matter of fact, check out the movies Aman-

da Duguay loves. These are guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat or make you die laughing. Although these movies may elicit different reactions, reading Lila Brodner’s universal experiences on page 6, will definitely bring up some nostalgic memories. Putting together this issue has been an incredible experience, and I encourage you to take the time to read the fantastic pieces our staff has worked hard to create on a variety of interesting topics. Every issue has a rigorous brainstorming process where we think of idea students can relate to and will be willing to read. A big thank you to the dedicated staff of The Pharcyde staff for consistently delivering excellent work. The collaboration that happens between the members of our team is a key factor in our ability to publish such engaging pieces regularly. I hope you enjoy the magazine!

He filled up a plate with food, and we get to the register. It must’ve cost like thirty-five dollars. I learned later that he did not even want to buy it because he was appalled by the price but he was embarrased because we were still new to the whole dating thing, so he ended up getting the food anyway.” -Mrs. Anderson

If Titanic taught us anything, it is that there can always be a means to survive a disaster at sea. Whether you jump onto the life-boats, share a door, or have the whistling capacity of a blue whale, where there is a will, there is a way. When it comes to love, though, it’s not always smooth sailing. Some of us get caught in tempests, run ashore, or suffer the fates of high waves at the inlet. If you’re in a relationship right now, you can feel the safety of a harbor, the tension of an anchor, or the serenity of the gentle tides at sunset. Our inaugural Love Issue quiz will help you discern whether you’re headed for a situationship or destined for a shipwreck. The higher your score, the sooner your may want to start bailing-- or heading towards shallower waters.

M sic Alb ms That Speak To Our Hearts... Throughout this past year, there have been many albums that students around the Benjamin school love. It differs from hip hop to rap and to country music. First, the real question is what is music? The definition for music is vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. It may mean this

to some people, but music means way more to Freshman Jake Giovanni. Normally, people just listen to music, but unlike Upper School Music Director Mrs. Austin, she does music for a living. She believes that music is her life. “Music means everything to me. I am the person I am today thanks to the time, energy, and dedication I’ve poured into becoming a

musician. There’s so much I love about music that it’s hard to put into words,” Austin explains. Not only does she love music, but it is her profession to teach it and bring it upon her students. Austin believes that she sees a different side in every person just because of what music they listen to or play. “Each musician brings their own experience to

each piece, making every performance unique and electric. Because of this quality, I feel like I get to know my students so much better and see deeper into who they are,” Austin said. A band member, junior Maddox Hoffman, loves band, and he feels that it gives him joy in life. “Music is something that is very prominent in my life and is something that I

HEROES & VILLIANS U t o p i a

have grown to love to perform. The qualities that I like most about it are the friendships I have made in band and the fact that it is an outlet for my creativity,” Hoffman stated. Now, the students of Benjamin explain their love for different albums that they listened to all throughout this past year, along with The Pharcyde’s rating for each album.

METRO BOOMIN

Travis Scott

Metro Boomin’s Heroes & Villians Cover “Heroes & Villains” is a crowd favorite, and Metro Boomin produced another hit. Although it was released on December 1, 2022, it was listened to all throughout 2023. Songs like “Superhero” and “Too Many Nights” were top hits, and have over 500 million streams on Spotify. Sophomore Caroline Smith talks about the ins and outs of this album. “This album was incredible, and when I first listened to it, I knew that I was going to love it,”

Smith remarked. “My favorite song in this album was “Too Many Nights,” because it was just so flowy and a vibe when I listen to it when I am driving.” Adding on to Smith’s point about how good “Too Many Nights” is, sophomore Jake Valentine likes that song too, and likes the feature of Don Tolliver even more. The Pharcyde’s Rating: 8.9/10

The long five-year wait for Travis Scott’s highly anticipated album “Utopia” was ended on July 28th 2023, the date of the album’s release. Travis Scott is not only a music artist. He does many other things that other music artists don’t. On that same date, his film called “Circus Maximus” was released too. The film is about his surreal and psychedelic journey from around the world, allowing the viewers to enter Scott’s visual odyssey. Even though it was not the only thing Scott did in the past five years, “Utopia” was the woven soundtrack for this film. Freshman Chase Atkins loves Utopia, and thinks that it is one of his best albums. “Utopia is such a great

album, since it has its songs where it is hype and others that are chill,” Atkins stated. “My favorite song on this album is Meltdown, for many reasons. I love how

the entire vibe of the song switches with it too.” The Pharcyde’s Rating: 9.3/10

Travis Scott’s Utopia Album Cover

One Thing At A Time Zach Bryan Morgan Wallen

Morgan Wallen is the face of country music at the moment and his One Thing At A Time album was another all-time favorite for country music fans. Headlined by “Last Night”, the

album has 36 songs that are all amazing. Morgan Wallen’s authenticity shines through in his lyrics. The songs on One Thing At A Time seem to reflect his personal experi-

ences and beliefs, allowing fans to connect with him on a more intimate level. This genuine approach to songwriting has likely contributed to his rise as the top country artist at the moment. Sophomore Luc Borzilleri is a huge Morgan Wallen fan, and ever since he blew up as a country singer, he has listened to his songs nonstop. “Last Night is my favorite Morgan Wallen song because of its nostalgic lyrics. Wallen does a good job telling stories through each song in the album which is what makes it so great,” Borzilleri explains.

Zach Bryan’s recent album “Zach Bryan” shows the many life experiences he has been through. This album also features a collaboration between Zach Bryan and The Lumineers during the song “Spotless”. Bryan credits The Lumineers for being his hero and the reason he got into music after his time

serving in the army. This album has served as a reminder of the struggles even such a prominet public figure as Zach Bryan can go through in life. “East Side of Sorrow”, “Fear and Fridays”, and “Ticking” all show the problems with being famous and still being depressed. Bryans connection between his fans and his music has led to millions of people streaming his music across m a n y p l a t forms.

The Taylor Swift Love xx Stories Morgan Wallen’s One Thing At A Time

er Dr. Haley is a huge one. Swift’s 1989 album is his favorite for many reasons. “My favorite album is 1989. I love listening to every single song on that album, and it does a nice job of showcasing the breadth and depth of her talent. My favorite song at the moment is Enchanted -- what a beautiful ode to love’s beginnings,” Haley stated. Swift’s record breaking show has dominated the 2023 summer, commanding attention and whipping up demand at a level that no artist has ever done before. Her Taylor Swift’s Speak Now Album

If it is from the Travis Kelce dating saga, or her highly anticipated “Eras Tour,” Taylor Swift has been one to listen to this past year. Her three albums, “Midnights,” “Speak Now,” and “1989” were released this past year. There are many Swifties out there, and science teach-

show spans over 180 minutes, including 40 plus songs froma t least nine of her albums. There are usually 16 costume changes, and many more exciting things. In the many cities they went to, many Benjamin students went Taylor Swift’s Midnights Album Cover to her concert in Tampa, and one of those students was junior Bella Marx. She loved Swift’s performance, and seeing her favorite album 1989 in concert was something special to see. “My favorite album is 1989 Taylor’s version because I love how the songs show her personal journey of her life and how she has grown,” Marx explained. “I saw it live when I went to her Tampa show in April and it was so amazing and fun and the vibes were so good.” The Pharcyde’s Rating: 9.5/10 Taylor Swift’s 1989 Album Cover Volume 45 • Number 5 • 2024

Styles That Pop Along with the New Year, new trends and styles make their presence known. These looks typicaly include past trends from years before because the majority of fashion is recycled over seasons and decades. For example, denim skirts originated in the 1970’s and reappeared in the early 2000’s and are now, once again, coming back into style. Another trend that is coming back from the 70’s and 80’s are leather jackets. While there are many who do not pay attention to trends and have always stuck to what they feel comfortable and stylish in, these generally more trendy items are certainly in style right now and it is the perfect time to purchase. Continue reading to take a look at recent styles that we love.

As mentioned above, leather jackets have made their comeback again. This time, a very fashionable style is specifically a leather blazer or different color leathers for even more of a statement piece. While a plain leather jacket is a great basic staple to have in your closet, these new alternates are also worth taking a look at. It can pair with jeans, a skirt, or even over a dress. From expensive designers to more affordable shops, stores like Zara and Gap have a plethora of options that are good quality but will not break the bank.

These hair clips have gained lots of popularity on social media and many have bought at least one as a result of their femininity and opportunity to be personalized. Most of the clips range from about 20-30 each. Emi Jay also has other products including hair brushes, headbands, and more. “I got an Emi Jay clip because I saw them on TikTok and I thought it looks really good in a half up half down and you can do so much with it. I think it looks so classy and cute,” says freshman Juliette Stampar.

As for the men, something that is timeless has also become more popular recently. Linen shirts are becoming much more worn by younger generations than in other past decades. The most common colors include white, blue, and a light pink, however any color you could imagine is out there waiting to be worn. These shirts can be worn with bathing suits, and khaki shorts or pants, as well as others. Many women also enjoy wearing a linen shirt in the summer over a bathing suit as a cover-up or with linen pants. At almost any store with lighter weight clothing, you will be able to find one of these stylish linen shirts to add to your closet.

For shoes, specifically sneakers, two trending brands for men and women are Adidas and Veja. Adidas has been around since 1924 and was started in Germany. This brand has continued to grow and create new designs that are timeless as well as more eclectic ones for certain styles. Their currently famous shoe is the “Samba”, featured at the top of the bubble. The second brand, Veja, was founded in 2004 in France. They have come out with many styles, mostly featuring their “V” on the side. “I saw a pair of Veja’s on one of my friends and thought they were really cute. I got them for Christmas and love them so much. They’re also super comfortable,” shares sophomore Kate Quinlivan.

Another clothing item that has returned to style is the denim skirt. Ranging from mini to maxi, they have made quite the reappearance recently. While a classic blue color may be expected of this piece dark grays, white, and even metallics have crept into this category. Levi’s, Express, American Eagle and more are great sources to search for your new acquisition. To keep it basic, a white or black t-shirt pairs well. Or to elevate the look, consider adding bold accessories and maybe even a leather jacket.

Tortoise shell clips are one item that have maintained their status but are coming forth even more than usual right now. Almost anyone with long hair can be expected to have at least one type of hair clip and this particular pattern is a fan favorite. In addition to clips, sunglasses in this print are also a stylish way to elegantly “up” a basic. “I love these clips because I think the style and pattern is cool and it kind of blends in with natural hair colors. I really like the ones that my friend has and it made me want to get my own,” explains sophomore Iris Hoffman.

A look invoking the Y2K or early 2000’s is including metallic accents into your outfits. Something like an article of clothing, a bag or even shoes can turn a plain outfit into a stylish ensemble. From Edikted you can find a pair of silver faux leather pants as well as other trending styles. To find a reasonably priced pair of shoes, Zara has multiple gold and/or silver sandals, boots and heels. Whether you are planning to go out to dinner, having a birthday party or even dressing up for fun with friends or on your own, these staples truly upgrade any look.

Some of us take our love of characters, sports a bit more seriously than others...

ophomore Haley Roth’s fascination with the minions began when she joined the staff of The Pharcyde and met her very-real life Gru: Pharcyde advisor Dr. Peruggia. Ever since, she’s been enamored by the zany antics, fashion sense, and linguistic expertise of the little yellow servant class. From kites to cups, pillows to pencils, Haley-- like Doc-believes that you can never have too many minions in one’s life.

D’Andre LaVassur - University of Michigan: “I like Michigan because I’ve seen how the coaching staff pushes their players, develops them, and prepares them for the draft. My family is divided between Michigan State fans and Michigan fans and I chose the Michigan side and I’ve liked them ever since. I watched Aidan Hutchinson, Trevor Keegan, Zak Zinter, Blake Corum, Keon Sabb, and Junior Colson. All time my favorite player has to be Braylon Edwards.”

Ryan Smith - University of Miami: “I became a Miami fan one because I live in South Florida and they’re the closest team to me and two because my great uncle had season tickets. I like Miami because it’s close to home and now I have family that attend the school (my sister). My favorite sport to watch is definitely football. This is because I’ve gone to so many games since I was little and I now have season tickets since I was a freshman. My favorite Miami athletes of all time are probably D’Eriq King for football, Isaiah Wong for basketball, and Yohandy Morales for baseball.”

Nicholas Zaccagnino - Boston Celtics: “I am a fan of the Boston Celtics because I am from the suburbs of Boston and I grew up there for the first couple of years of my life. The Celtics are my favorite team because they have always been good throughout their whole franchise and my lifetime and watching them play is so electrifying. My favorite players that I have watched on the Celtics are Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo, Jayson Tatum, and Jaylen Brown.”

Sawyer Lefevre - Miami Dolphins: “I became a fan of the Miami Dolphins in 2012. I like them because they are the only undefeated team ever in the history of the NFL and I think that’s awesome. I liked Ndamukong Suh and Ryan Tannehill when they played on the team and right now I like Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, Jalen Ramsey, Bradley Chubb, Jaylen Waddle, Raheem Mostert, and Devon Achane.
